Why Movies Use New Years as a Device

July 1st is the first day of the rest of the year!
We celebrate this at Hollywood Gatekeepers as Happy Half New Year!!
What does this have to do with reading screenplays?
Well, we firmly believe that when you analyze your life, you will become better at analyzing movies. We are constantly drawing the line to connect cinema with everyday activities. When you have a handle on your life, when you are going for your dreams, when you are stepping up and deciding to take the path of being a reader and/or working in Hollywood, you will also be a part of the movement to create better, more authentic stories!
It all starts with the blank page. If you start to review someone's screenplay while you are depressed and unhappy with your life, it is very possible that you will be harsher and less open to finding the hidden gem in that screenplay. But if you find ways to have your best life, you will be in a space of collaboration and joy as you dig in to find all the ways you can help make that screenplay better!
This is why we double down on things like Happy Half New Year! Because we want to make screenplays better. And we want to make your life better!
It is also interesting to see how movies use New Year's celebrations to underscore the journey of a story. It's a brilliant tool to show the path and subtext of any character.
And New Year's doesn't always need to happen in January! So if you're a writer, use the device of new beginnings in other places in your script! Maybe even through a Happy Half New Year's celebration in your story!! We would love that!
