Back in 1970, when I was ten, I set up a salt water tank in a five gallon aquarium. My Dad and my Uncles were Aquarium guys, they all said that there was no way to have a 5 gallon salt tank. Even the Fish Store guy thought I was wasting my money. But I did it. 5 gals, under gravel filter. 1 Sea Anemone, 1 Shrimp, 1 Clown fish and 1 Wild Caught Hermit Crab. The tank ran for three years. Then I got greedy. I caught a sand crab at the beach and introduced it. It "molted" and released so much bacteria and infusoria, the tank died overnight. The moral of the story: "Quarantine everything, especially Wild Caught Specimens!"
I've done a tiny 5 ltr pico tank with zoanthids gsp and live rock with about 3 sexy shrimp ,I gave it to my friend when I moved countries and it's still going strong with water changes every other day
Mike Pellerin it’s amazing you were able to maintain a system like that at just 10 years old! I totally agree....quarantine is definitely the safest way to go!
is it just me or do some of the shrimp look like they have 'claws' like a crayfish? I love these shrimp and always enjoy when you show them...thanks again Rus!
Sean Meister they do have little claws...some people call them their ‘boxing gloves’ 🤣 Thank you Sean!!
Check out Alpha Opae Ulas, they take the claw game to the next level.
@mateuszsz8771 They do indeed! I have seen photos of them, that would be pretty cool to keep some
You should try to breed that color of shrimp!! It's actually like a golden-yellowish orange
I've kept these guys for years(saved 6 from an ecosphere and gave them a 1 gallon at my work) never got one to berry. Are you having good breeding rates?
Great video Rus. They are beautiful. Unfortunately, my mind is sometimes so single threaded, all I could think of when the shrimp swarmed the pellet was...... 'Oh, aquatic Dairy Cows'.
Supreme Gecko It’s true! They are rather like aquatic dairy cow isopods when they eat!
Mooooo!
Wonderful to see your Opae ula!
Thank you’ 🦐🦐🦐
Cool shrimp !!
I alwsys learn something from you and Supreme Gecko.
I hope that all of the critters were removed from classrooms, offices and waiting rooms before everything shut down.
Elaine Smith Thank you! I prepped my shrimp enclosure at my office for several months of absence...anything else I would have brought home, definitely.
That's a really nice opae ula tank.
You got me into these guys Russ. I purchased 10 of them back when you did your last video on them. They have just recently started to carry eggs around. I haven’t seen any instars yet though.
Grassypeak congratulations on the eggs! Once you’ve got eggs, it won’t be long. You should see floating larvae soon!!
Where did you purchase them from?
Where did I, or @Grassypeak? I got my original stock in Hawaii around 2004 or 2005. 🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐
@@Aquarimax well either of you. 🤓 Where could I get them now?
B Lee's Pets are you in the continental US? If so, I offer them, as does www.petshrimp.com
What plants do you have in the tank?
While it is a little more work up front, these shrimp seem to be superior to brine shrimp in all respects, afterwards.
I suppose you could keep some in a Sea Monkey tank, but why? Just a little more space gives you a lot of good options to "up" the aesthetic part of your tank.
Agreed…I have kept both, and while I enjoy both, these are definitely easier to maintain.
It's fairly rare but some opae ula do come out green. There's multiple reports of that.
Interesting! I have to google that 😄
what is the gravel you used for this tank..I have regular gravel but I love how they dig in looking for tidbits
This is oolithic aragonite sand. 👍
Thank you!! I may switch over but i have microcrabs too that are in the substrate..so i would have to find them all..yikes..maybe put over the gravel...
what is that action with their legs? is that how they walk or are they sifting the ground looking for stuff? or both?
Dee Ca. Tha churning movements with their front legs is indeed how they forage for food. 👍
I am currently setting one 3 gallon up at the moment with loads with lava rocks. However my bottom is bare would that be ok? What are the recommended plants other than chaeto? what would be a good minimum number to start with? These shrimp are kinda expensive so I would just like to get a good minimum number at the start. Luv your vids as always
ahhian you could do a bare bottom, as long as you have something like limestone to buffer pH and add calcium and other minerals. I do recommend some substrate though. Very few plants can handle the 1/2 seawater...the few that do long term include the chaeto-like algae and the mini miss balls from petshrimo.com. A good minimum for breeding success would be 10-12. 🦐🦐🦐👍
@@Aquarimax thanks for the tips! :) wish mine would be just as successful like urs in times to come
Great video 👍
peachique Thank you! 🦐 🦐
Have you encountered any of them not using their front/grabbing legs while moving around? One of mine isn’t using its front legs and is swimming around like normal but then randomly falls upside down to the bottom :-(
I haven’t seen that among mine…
Awesome video i love shrimps
COOPER'S CICHILDS Thank you! If you love shrimps, this is definitely a great species to keep. 🦐🦐🦐👍
Another interesting video! Can they be used to feed other pets?
FearlessP4P1 in theory they could be...in fact, they are sometimes harvested in the wild for seahorse food. They are quite nutritious, but not very sustainable as a food source because they breed relatively slowly.
Wow, the most expensive part of getting these might actually be the shrimp. Like, you could probably get a goldfish for 20 cents and the rest of the year for much much more.
True! 10 shrimp for $25 or so…a 1- to 3-gallon setup could be assembled for less.
Great info. Would love to get some of these shrimp.🤓👍🦐
B Lee's Pets Thank you! These are a great, extremely easy shrimp to keep. 👍
Do you sell some of them?
I do! I’ve sold about 45 in the past month. I am not shipping until after New Years, but let me know if you are interested. 😁
What is a good size tank & can they live with fish?
iddybiddyladybug Leeza They can be kept in 0.5 gallons and above, but I recommend 5 or 10 gallons for more consistent breeding. They are too small to be kept with just about any fish, and they require brackish water.
Aquarimax Pets thank you! I’ve never kept them before just wanting to learn 🙋🏻♀️
iddybiddyladybug Leeza Great questions! I am always glad to answer questions on fun creatures like these when I can. 😊👍
How can you tell the difference between these shrimp and cherry shrimp ?
These shrimp live in brackish water(half saltwater) and cherry shrimp live in fresh water.
They are easy for sure
H.C. Aqua did you get some again? 🦐🦐🦐👍
@@Aquarimax yes I did. Found them for $.50 each so picked up 20 of them.
H.C. Aqua Nice! Only in Hawaii will you find them at that price 😊👍
Good Movie👍
Thank you!
I researched this shrimps natural habitat. So strange! Brackish water ponds!
i have two in a water bottle. one month no feeding..still alive due to enclosed ecosystem with special treated water (with food within ?) lifespan 10-30yrs
