Same here went from a 400 level to around a 1k. And I love watching he is so chill and relaxed while also being extremely instructive without even trying just effortlessly teaching!
Till this tutorial i was thinking capturing with f pawn is always better because it opens a file for rook but now i have some food for thought because u r right A) it isolates E pawn & ur king becomes easy target for annoying checks B) by capturing with g pawn it gives a safe breathing space for king. Thanx John👍👍
I thought the same, now I'm gonna change my ways. But i don't think you should take with the pawn before the opponent castes as that took looking down the open file next to the king could be disastrous
One of the best and patient strings of tempi to setup a defensive powerhouse I've ever seen. Way to keep that tension going until the end. Stellar, John

I think it was called “Russians” instead of “Soviets” because the USSR was relatively young whereas Russian chess history wasn’t. Fischer’s taking on the “Russians” had more cultural significance.
Hey John, solid content as always. One suggestion: it'd be great to overlay the Twitch chat over the tournament chat room for this type of video so we the YT crowd could see the comments you're responding to. Cheers!
Do you prefer games without increment? That's what I see you playing most often. Personally I enjoy watching games with increment just so the endgame doesn't turn into so much of a clicking race. But I hope you'll continue playing what you enjoy; I'll keep watching either way. :)
If you're interested in Soviet chess the book Soviet Chess by Andrew Soltis is excellent. I read that book like a novel, except for the analysis though, which are nice and well done.
Hey John, love your vids! Did you miss a rook fork @20:11? Wasn’t gonna affect the outcome cuz you were winning anyways but I think it’s awesome how the knights dominate together.
hey John, what do you think of Pogchamps? everytime i watch it i always hope to see you as a commentator, I think you would be a perfect fit, you have brought so many people to Chess and helped out so many people with your series in the past. If you do have a chance to get in there i highly suggest taking the opportunity. It'll grow your channel a lot too, which i think you deserve more than any chess player on the platform. As usual John, love the vids and hope you have a good week!
Why is it infinitely easier to recognize tactics in puzzles rather than in a real game? Does it have to do with the fact that "Hey, you're winning in this position - find the move" is literally the premise of all puzzles?
This was an instructive endgame with 2 knights vs. 1 rook. But it seemed like the situation confused you a bit, since I noticed 3 times you called a "knight" a "rook".
Greetings John, nice game as always! May I get your permission to translate and reupload your videos on a Chinese platform? I love your content and want to share it with fellow chess enthusiasts in China!
John, would have kept the other rook guarding the a pawn and moved the f rook to d file ... e file is closed anyways with e pawn .... so maybe R--e8 is not much use ... Also was R--d7 bad allowing your king in ... why not keep it at d6 .. also later other knight up so your king has one more square to move..
Lol I love how that lichess player 'jonnied' is giving commentary on his disappointing arena performance in the chat room during this video. Hilarious.
13:17 Does this rule really apply for 2 minors vs rook? Technical endgames are pretty much the only kind of position where a rook has a chance against 2 minors. But if instead you drum up a k-side attack with queen and 2 knights, those white majors will be totally helpless! Also, with more opponent's major pieces, there's just more stuff to fork! :p
Ten minutes is so much time for John, he just casually browses his freakin' bookshelf while the clock runs on his turn, lol.
Hey John, always great to see your uploads, you helped out my beginner stages in chess

@grim789 i agree with you 500% on that, he makes the complex murky waters of the chess board as simple as can be

You have to work hard to prove that two pony's versus a rook is +1
Most beautiful endgame I've seen in a while. Keep up the good work John!
Nice work with those knights! Their movements seem so loose but you show just how solid they can be!

Love seeing your uploads John. Always makes my night better.
Fantastic instruction, I appreciate you explaining your thought process, and it's at a pace that I can follow but not so slow that it drags along.
Thank you, I'm really pleased to hear that!
Beautiful play John, that ending was like a puzzle to be unfolded. Great to watch.

Thanks for the tip on which pawn to recapture with. Very instructive.
I never could have figured out that knight maneuvering, very instructive game.
Very instructional. I always learn something watching your longer games.
Thanks John
That was beautifully played earned a follower. Loved how you Analyzed it at the end as well

Killer end game play, that coordination is pristine. Thanks for the upload John!
Thank you for another beautiful game John, these videos are well worth the wait between each
that was an exemplary double knight endgame. spectacular play John!
Ive never been thia early, but ive always loved your videos john thanks for all you do
2 knights can be absolute beast if you know how to make them work together. Well played John.

I actually followed that match , and it was definitely the Soviets.
@@richardv.582 I followed it too. It was “Soviets” in the media. The book title in question was better marketed to chess lovers as “Russians.”
What an excellent knight maneuver. Awe inspiring defence and consequent attack

I looked up "Russians vs Fischer". Seems like a rare book. All copies are over a hundred bucks.

Picked up a new copy of Russians Versus Fischer on eBay just now. $28. It was only $768 on Amazon. Tough choice.
That was really cool. How you got your knights and pawns coordinated, inspiring.
Fischer was a world beater...amazing champion.
Why is it infinitely easier to recognize tactics in puzzles rather than in a real game? Does it have to do with the fact that "Hey, you're winning in this position - find the move" is literally the premise of all puzzles?
24:19 I think the AI thinks that passage to the right side is more valuable than a pawn as you can gain two pawns in a few moves.
Something new to learn every day!
This was an instructive endgame with 2 knights vs. 1 rook. But it seemed like the situation confused you a bit, since I noticed 3 times you called a "knight" a "rook".
Three people are offended by instructive endings.
What a final knights tango💃
Superlative demonstration of two knights vs rook. How can a man play better?

Sometimes two queens are worse than one active knight. Just get a family fork by capturing the first queen :)
