I relate so hard to: "This time I'm gonna be equal or better on the clock" *Out of the opening* "So I'm a minute down on the clock..." Nice games and great vid!
Agree. We're there with you John (and anybody else feeling stressed right now), it's been stressful times for sure and I know there are probably individual challenges going on on top of that. Hang in there and good times will be ahead! Sending my best wishes from San Diego.
When you hung the knight in the fourth game, I thought it was actually very instructive. As a lower rated player myself, those are the types of mistakes I make every other game and seeing a good player respond to such a blunder actually helped me understand how to handle the situation of a queen that's invading so early on.
The mistake he made was reacting to black by pushing all those pawns on the queenside. What you want to do against a hyper aggressive player like this is play solid moves and look for your own opportunities to give your opponent something to react to and force him to slow down. Remember, that when your opponent moves forward he leaves space behind.
@@MrSupernova111 I usually try to keep my cool and just develop normally. The problem is that b2 feels natural to me to fienchetto the bishop, but then I forget I hang the knight. So the response is actually quite good to see. How to protect the rook and attack the queen for example.
@@alternativ7171 . Its good to see that its not just us mere mortals that make those mistakes. I agree with you. Where John went wrong is when he started reacting to everything but by listening to his own commentary we can see that he was playing outside of his comfort zone. I'm more of a tactical player and would happily sacrifice a pawn in exchange for activity against a hyper player. Against tougher opponents I'll play solid and look for mistakes although I admit are not always easy to find. I want to say that I win more times than not against these types of players at my rating level of 2000+ (2100+ in bullet). I noticed that some higher rated opponents get sloppy with me and its not unusual for me to beat titled players that get too comfortable because I'm lower rated than them. My best win so far was against a 2400 rated IM. Ultimately, what I have learned from studying the games of the great players of present and past is that you always leave something behind when attacking wildly from the beginning so theoretically hyper aggressive players leave themselves in vulnerable positions if we look for counter attacks.
This might have been my favorite using the clock as a weapon! Hoping all your stress eases up soon. It's never easy, but one silver lining to any stressful time is that once you overcome it, you can look back on it in the future during another stressful time and say "If I got through that, I can get through this!"
That last game was a positional masterclass. Specifically how you knew exactly when to take on c3 and maneuvering your pieces to optimal squares without weakening your pawn structure. Great content, cheers!

Been watching John a couple of weeks now. I've figured out that he can look at a board an instantly see things that sometimes take me minutes to see. At 12:40 in this video, John thinks for a bit and says, "I don't know" in regard to his position/the game. Then he pulls out a win. Incredible!
No need to apologize about the commentary. Great content as always! Really interesting to see your reactions to an opponent like this, who doesn't let you relax at any point! Great job adapting and winning the match :)
I could sugarcoat it and call those slightly unsound but superquick players 'challenging'. But truth to be told: They are outright annoying and I tend to always lose against them, either directly by time or by crumbling against them in the last 10 or 20 seconds of my time. Nice to see how you took one of them apart while - and this I find most stunning - explaining your play to the audience. Hats off to you.
Thank you for another great video John! In particular it was instructive to see you maintain you mental balance despite hanging a knight early in one of the games.
