Behind the Scenes: Winnie’s Big Moment at the London Horse Show
It’s finally here - the big moment I’ve been both excited and nervous about! This year, for my Grassroots to Glory demonstration at the London International Horse Show, I made a sentimental but bold decision to bring Winnie instead of my trusty Jam. Regular viewers will know that Winnie is Jam’s baby, so it felt incredibly special to have her step into her mum’s hoofprints.
But taking a young horse into the enormous atmosphere of the Excel is no small feat. From the bustling stables to the bright lights of the main arena, this video gives you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at what it’s really like to bring a horse to the London International Horse Show.
The demo, led by the brilliant Dickie Waygood (British Eventing Team Chefs d’Equipe) and featuring the incredible Laura Collett, was an unforgettable experience. But let’s just say arena familiarisation didn’t exactly go smoothly… Winnie had some “spicy” moments, leaving me unsure how the actual demo would play out. 😬
Will she rise to the occasion or let the atmosphere get the better of her? You’ll have to watch to find out how it all went down!

Honestly I don’t know how you didn’t get emotional, because I did 🥲 I cannot believe this is the same Winnie, she truly is starting to live up to her mums name. You must be so incredible proud and excited for the future!
You know, what horses do for us, as fear-based creatures and against all their natural inclinations, is enough to make you cry! I teared up watching arena familiarization! Winnie following her grandma into the big arena, despite her trepidation, was heart-wrenching. What a brave, brave girl. And you both did an amazing job--you can be very proud of Winnie, and she can be proud of you as well! 🙂
Wasn't it touching to see how proud her grandmother was and rightfully so, to see how far her little girl has come.

I love the fact that Winnie sees Hobs as her blankie and that she was following her into the arena. Such a lovely relationship you all have with your horses gives them the confidence to do these amazing things. Your hard work creates these amazing partnerships with your horses lovely to be invited along to see their journey thank you.
Winnie is her mother's daughter for sure. Well done Meg, that was some fine riding - wonderful to watch. Love how Hobs cares and clearly loves her "family" both two and four legged! Excited for the future of this very special home bred.

This almost made me cry. Little Winnie is so grown up! In the beginning in the warm up ring she was showing her lateral movements and attempt at passage! She was so good!! You were too. It just goes to prove that a well bred horse brought along quietly even if she is a home bred. Which to me is even more incredible! Can’t wait to watch on H&C! Hobbit? You are the best mum. Winnie is becoming a dazzling star. As well as introducing her as your homebred mare, I think you should also say ‘home trained’ mare, as the reason she is shining and flourishing is because of your horsewomanship. She is a real credit to your care and skill. And ‘wow’, doesn’t she have some beautiful paces and scope!

Greetings from 🇳🇿New Zealand. I'm a lover of horses without the opportunity of owning or riding. But anything equestrian excites me. I have followed you for several years now. You and your family are hopelessly devoted to your four- legged friends. Was amazing watching you both. I initially didn't think Winnie would settle. You both did so well. Dickie gave credit where credit was due... and you both deserved the praise. It all started at home, how you and Hobbit have encouraged, nurtured and loved your ponies and with help too from Hannah. Also the end of your H F vlog was so cute when your Kitty Cat decided to say hello lol. Show us more of your Kitty Cats please.

Winnie is super. I've liked her since I first saw her gallop as a 2 yo in the pasture with others. She's really growing into herself--you've done such a good job with her. She needed a little extra time (and I think the more talent, the more they need time to grow, feel every stage of her body.

So fantastic Meg! Winnie is turning into a fab pony. Just an observation, I noticed Laura's horse had an ear bonnet. I wouldn't be surprised if she had put ear plugs in her horse's ears to deafen the surrounding noise. I was thinking ear plugs could have helped Winnie out, but Winnie worked through all the interesting noises, the loud speaker, applause, etc. Good for her. Good for you. Well done!
