As a Wolves supporter living 25 years on the South Coast… Pompey has it. Not surprised at social media, Pompey is about football, not being Gen Z🤣. Pompey fans are passionate Home and Away, great club, great ground… just need owners with deeper pockets. Maybe add away fans numbers to stats… that’s a true measure of support.
@@jimmycburfield5997 : Portsmouth FC holds the Wembley stadium attendance record for 50.000 + biggest single fanbase present for a domestic fixture at neutral venue. 8th of March 2020.
Yeah but all of them bar 1 is from almost a century ago, whilst since then both Southampton and Portsmouth have won just 1 fa cup each. Yet for things outside of the trophy cabinet since then, Southamptons dominated that by a long way

I've every respect for Bournemouth and Brighton fans who have rallied round to save their clubs and are now enjoying deserved success . Pompey are a special club , the nation's only island city and hopefully on their way back too after being saved by the fans . Over the years we have suffered from bad to ridiculous ownership and management . We sold the club to the Eisners because they had a realistic plan and Fratton park is now being brought up to more modern standards . One thing I will conceed to Saints is they have budgeted well and developed over the years . A league meeting may only be a season away .

7:25 Besides Cherries are at a major disadvantage as historically many folks from Bournemouth/Poole, Dorset, New Forest have gravitated towards supporting Southampton because they were the nearest top flight team before Bournemouth scaled the leagues. You've only got to see the matchday trains leaving Bournemouth for Southampton weirdly full of Bournemouth/Poole residents wearing Saints shirts. They have a really skewed fanbase because of this. Despite being smaller (and to be be fair we revel in it) at least Bournemouth's fanbase is relatively local - hence the size of the crowds. The funny thing is all of the clubs you've featured have not too disimilar city populations, so a lot of it boils down to the history of the club consolidating a strong fanbase rather than their geographic reach.
Great comment, history plays a big part in how big or small a club is today irrespective of how well they are currently doing. It can take a couple of generations to reverse the trend 👍🏻⚽️
good video, i am a Portsmouth fan and at the moment they are doing stadium work, when the work is done the stadium can hold 21,000 people, at the moment it can only hold 17,000-18,000 people because some of the stands have wooden beams that are against regulations. the stadium can also not be expanded any further due to transport links, the local council has rejected any and all plans until a bridge from Fratton station is built. Also this season 23/24 looks very good, been to two friendlies and the youth is coming through and the signings are looking very promising, this window already 11 players have been signed. PuP
Portsmouth are the Newcastle of the South, only issue is their support is generally restricted to the 10 mile radius of the city. Obviously they have supporters farther afield but it’s very much a one city club. Long term Brighton have the greatest potential for future success.
Thanks John, good analysis, Portsmouth are a traditional one town club, Bournemouth could fall through the divisions if they are not careful, agree about Southampton and Brighton seem to be team Sussex, just like Gillingham are as team Kent. Thanks for your comments👍🏻⚽️
Hi I did say A 10 mile radius much more and you hit Southamptons fan base to the west. Traditionally Southampton and Portsmouth have been the big Two of Southern football but money is the route of every thing now and Brighton seem to be much better ran financially and Portsmouth have had dire financial management . When you can sell one player who covers the whole cost of a new Stadium and state of art training facilities your on track.@@danielkerr4100
Well done. As a stateside Cherries supporter, I feel confirmed that your effort reveals what a special moment in our history this is. Onward and upward with Andoni!
It just goes to show how big Portsmouth FC is. It holds the Wembley stadium attendance record. Plus Fratton Park over the last 3 years is having an upgrade. I'm sure when promoted the ground will be increased. Pompey the Pride of the South.
I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem when getting promotion. But for the owners and supporters promotion to the Premiership. It would be nice if it was around 38.000. For the long term of Portsmouth FC.
Oh another Portsmyth you do in fact share the record of 85,021 with Sunderland (it was the 2019 football league cup final). Southampton took 50,000 to the final against Carlisle in 2010 which is more than Pompey took in 2019 (only taking 42,500). There was even a campaign to have more tickets given to the Saints fans as there were 15,000 free seats, there is even a BBC news article about the campaign.(title - Southampton supporters demand more JPT final tickets - Thursday, 11 March 2010). They managed to get the FA to release another 6,000 but the club felt they could have easily sold 10k more. A couple of years later the FA changed the rules which allowed Pompey to sell over 50,000 tickets to the Final against Salford which was meant to take place in April 2020. However the game wasn't played until a year later and with no fans whatsoever. There is even an article in the Portsmouth news dated 8th Mar 2020 (title - Portsmouth officially eclipse Millwall and Southampton to set another Wembley attendance record after surpassing 50,000 ticket landmark). Portsmouth fans just make stuff up the entire time. I think it's a general lack of education.
Brighton fan here of over 50 years, would love to have pompey's history.fratton was always a hostile place to go,back in the day,Southampton no mugs either.i would always include Plymouth in this, they have so much potential
Plymouth are never going to be a big club. Portsmouth have and will be a big club. In 1983 Portsmouth took over 10,000 supporters to Plymouth in '83' Outnumbering Plymouth by 2.1.
Really great and informative video. As a Pompey season ticket holder I still found it really interesting learning about our neighbouring clubs history too. Personally I find how nasty the Pompey-Saints rivalry has become over the years really boring a tedious! All for healthy competition but also respect each other as human beings!!
Portsmouth don’t have a big enough stadium to satisfy their support. They are the biggest club on the south coast by far. They took 50,000 to Wembley for the check a trade trophy🤣☝🏻 They are also the most successful club on the south coast by far too.
Portsmouth fans just making shit up again. Southampton took 50,000 to the 2010 JPT final in 2010, and had a campaign to have more. Portsmouth and Sunderland jointly hold the record for the highest attendance at Wembley 85,021 but only 42,500 were Pompey. What you're getting confused by is the fact that Pompey claimed they had sold 50,000 tickets to the JPT final in April 2020. When that match actually took place in 2021 there was a grand total of 0 Portsmouth fans there. Why are you lot so poorly educated?
Agree Matt, Portsmouth could be the biggest team on the south coast, if they had success and a bigger ground. The fan base is there. Really pleased for Brighton as they continually improve, and will be playing in europe this season. Also, you might or not remember that Brighton were without a ground way bac in the 90s, and they played their home games at the Gills, and still got over 2000 gates. Bournemouth simply havent enlargend their stadium. As for Southampton hope its just a blip, and they return to the Premier next season, although it wont be easy. Great research btw
Very true portsmouth ground has always held them back and they are bigger, just look at the trophys they won, and old attendances.have a catchment area of between 500,000 700,000 people.
Good video Matt, Pompey are the biggest and most successful out of the four, a look at the history books back it up. Unfortunately a lack of investment in Fratton over the years and questionable owners have let us slip behind the likes of Saints and Brighton, where really we should be top flight regulars with around 40k gates. Thankfully with the Eisners on board were now catching up. Onwards and upwards.
I can say, as a Bournemouth fan, your table was pretty fair - as much as i dislike Southampton ( i think ostensibly for stealing our fans historically), they probably deserved biggest club. But I like Portsmouth and want all the best for them. Brighton, pah, indifferent to them, but are a superb model of improvement. Let's hope we can emulate them over the next few years.
Compare & contrast.... 2022 vs 2023. Both pompey and saints play Sheffield weds on opening day of season. 2022 Pompey take 2k fans for a Saturday 3pm kick off....2023 saints take 3k on a friday 8pm kick off.
Southampton is the biggest club, obviously at the moment brighton are prospering. Bournemouth are punching well above their station but fair play to them. And all skunt fans talk about is the " during the war " uncle albert naval stories.
What struck me about this video - and what a good job you’ve done, btw - is that although Pompey have the greater history, the big weaknesses are the ground and social media presence. I’m sure being outside the Prem is a big factor in both, but the club must address both if they are to have sustained success. Do it again in 5 years and let’s see who is on top! PuP
Pompey are the only team in the league to have won all four divisional titles AND to have won the FA Cup at the old and the new Wembley stadiums........also the FA Cup final attendance record for the new Wembley is held by Pompey(and some other lot called Cardiff) and the attendance record for the Checkatrade cup final at Wembley is also held by Pompey( and some other lot called Sunderland!) Two English champions title wins(Southampton have NEVER won THAT) and two FA cup wins(Southampton have won it once).. I can see that your scoring system was intended to be fair and unbiased, but awarding points for social media is a bit silly really, social media should never be any kind of yardstick or measurement for anything at all, it's vague, it's uncheckable, and it's completely outside the achievements and history of the football club itself, and the figures you quoted are so open to manipulation, guesswork and different interpretation that they're really meaningless.....Pompey ARE the biggest club on the south Coast, Southampton wannabe the biggest club on the South Coast, but they're not, Brighton could be big, dare I say it, bigger than Southampton, Bournemouth are a good club, they'll always be smaller than the other three, but they're punching well above their weight and they're in the Premier League on merit........
I'm a Bournemouth fan but we will never be 'bigger' than Soton or Pompey. Although on the pitch, we are obviously trying to grow. Brighton never really used to be bigger than us, at the Goldstone, there were periods of low crowds. Recently they have run their club brilliantly though and support has grown. With our new owners, we are using them as something to aim for.
As a Pompey fan. We have around 18,500 at FP atm with the ground capacity is set to reach 21,500 soon! The club in League One has has the highest record attendance!
Itfc here ....its southampton no debate lol ,46 top flight season's v pompey 34 , Sotons much more recent too...pompey has 2 national titles though and would get the same crowds if they got themselves a bigger capacity
Skates are sailors as in Matlows ie. Navy. Did they get the better of you calling you Scummer's. Portsmouth is where Wars are won. And it's the 2nd busiest port in the UK after Dover. Most people in the Navy come from up North and the rest of the UK. And are protecting this country and others.
Always like the atmosphere at Portsmouth games...that bell,it always sounds rocking.....get yourself to Edinburgh for the Derby Matt....either Easter Road or preferably Tynecastle...another one to tick off your list...
Thanks Roy, both grounds are high up on the list for this coming season. My first ever Scottish game pre the channel was Hearts v Aberdeen, after that I was hooked 👍🏻⚽️🏴
Good combination of clubs matt.. remember Brighton a couple of decades ago playing at gillingham, the sea Gulls has definitely progressed within such a short amount of time . 👏 👏
Everyone deep down knows that. You can measure things in all sorts of ways but ultimately we all know the truth :-) Saints fans can protest all they like but that's the truth of it
Portsmouth average 15k fans in league one, they only sell14,500 season tickets so everyday fans still can buy. It not even a debate who is the biggest clib
There is no simple answer here, they are all bigger in different ways. Brighton is currently the highest ranked team (and arguably the largest local population of supporters to draw from), Portsmouth have the most trophies in their cabinet, Southampton have spent the longest period in the top flight, and Bournemouth have... what they have.
@@mattthegroundhopper9242 well Bournemouth stayed up and now Saints are going up so glad to see we'll get 3 South Coast teams in the Prem again next season. I predict Brighton will probably finish highest, Saints may go straight back down but as a Saints fan I hope not lol
Interesting video mate, and quite a fair way of assessing who’s ‘biggest’…social media aside. It confirms what we all know that there is still, in 2024, massive untapped potential in Pompey, mainly due to the capacity of Fratton Park, not to mention endless awful owners up until the fans saved the club. I’d much rather have our history and passion as opposed to just existing, albeit in a higher league. We need a few more points for holding two (new) Wembley attendance records.😜 As I type this we’re 8 points clear at the top of League one with 90 points and 4 games to play so hopefully we’re on our way back.
That’s typical Pompey talk from your mate. They have won the FA cup 3 times but two of those were in the war. Because they are the biggest naval base and were situated across from Nazi occupied France, they got lots of great players playing for them who were from different parts of the country and would have normally played for different clubs. And also that meant that other clubs lost players temporarily because they were dispersed because of the war effort. Portsmouth FC massively benefited from the war in this regard, so should we really count those 2 of their 3 FA Cup trophy wins? I wouldn’t say no. So they are not a bigger club. And I think it’s disingenuous for you to put your points system together for this video, on which Southampton run away with it and then say Portsmouth are a bigger club really. interesting to see all of those stats though. Good work.
Thanks Henry, Southampton won the debate but I did say Portsmouth ‘’could’’ be bigger, maybe I should place Gillingham in the debate starting with a mid week 3-1 win 😀, thanks for your comment 👍🏻⚽️
Pompey are the biggest club. Win a lot for than everyone else. Can still pull crowds in league one. Lets be honest pompey have been outside the top flight since the big social media frenzy. If they got back all there channels would blow up. We actually have a decent owner now and we’re on the way up so watch the space ! PUP 💙
notice the only one moaning are the saint fans sad, anyway hope to meet you next season to rekindle are friendly rivalry to show who the best fans are, and matt great video by the way got a thumbs up from me
I hate Portsmouth, simples. I love Brighton and Bournemouth being a Southampton supporter. These clubs are well run and recruit well something the Saints used to do so well.
Pompey are understood throughout the world to have incredible fans. Loudest decibel levels? As a Carlisle fan I have no dog in the fight; I have seen us play all of them. My winner would be Portsmouth. Fair respect to all the BHAFC fans who supported their side in more difficult times
In terms of success I would have to say Portsmouth. Brighton and Hove Albion + Bournemouth have never won a major trophy (Charity shield isn't a major trophy) and Southampton just have the one FA Cup. It's funny though because when I think of who has been at the top level more, I associate Southampton with the premier league more than what I do with Portsmouth.
My dad, a Bournemouth fan who then moved to Pompey, used to take me to Fratton Park. We both wanted Saints to do well and cheered them on when they won the FA Cup. I find the hatred manufactured between Pompey & Saints since then ridiculous & sad. Hampshire against the world!
I had an inkling that Portsmouth is bigger, especially considering they made more inroads when in the Prem, sameway Brighton are doing now. They were successful too.
Good video Matt and Saints obviously and rightly are proved to be the biggest club! However, I slightly disagree with your last point about if Portsmouth had a bigger ground they could become the biggest club. They are basically an island (as they keep telling everyone) and as such are limited by the size of the city. Therefore, if they had a 30,000+ stadium, where would the extra fans be drawn from? If outside the Premier League (where they usually are) and even if back in the Championship and doing reasonably well, they'd still struggle to get 25,000 fans on a regular basis.
I'm originally from Portsmouth but lived in Surrey for years. There's plenty of PFC supporters here and based in London, which is an easy through train from Waterloo. If we make it to the top flight again we won't have trouble drawing people in. The infrastructure around the ground is a problem, Fratton station is too small for the trains, you have to be on the front carriages to get off the train there and the footbridge from the station needs expanding and updating. The current owners are actually working on it now, it's a requirement from the city council for future ground expansion. Car parking is basically side streets or elsewhere and road networks aren't ideal but again this is all to be improved and the long term aim of the owners. On the pitch, it would be good to actually see one of the other south coast clubs win some silverware at long last! Thought Brighton would manage it last season but for that penalty shoot out..
Portsmouth have mostly been in the lower leagues, unlike Southampton who have been up in the 1st tier for a long time and therefore still having the fan base that they do is amazing. Of course I am biased but for me Pompey have the more passionate support than any other South coast club. PUP from Victoria, Canada
Plus have to remember the old Dell which for a 100 years was Southampton home ground which had a highest attendance of 30.000 against MUFC with Bobby Charlton and George Best. But much more like 15.500 for around 40 years.
As a saints fan, although it is biased😅 we are the bigger club. We’ve got ourselves Europe multiple times in the past (1982, 2015 and 2016) and big credit to Brighton as well, respect them a lot. Absolutely despise the skates, and for good reason. Bournemouth aren’t our rivals, although they claim to be. Always been saints Pompey and will always stay that way. Southampton although going down have sold 25,000 season tickets this year and it’s extremely hard to get away tickets. Luckily I followed my team up and down the country last season, and this year it should pay off, with priority and all that. Obviously glad we won. UP THE SAINTS 🔴⚪️🔴⚪️🔴⚪️🔴⚪️🔴⚪️
I have the feeling that not many of their suppporters would swap Fratton Park for something else and newer. It's also been modernised recently so it's not really the dump it used to be.
@mattthegroundhopper9242 gradually yes. Problem Fratton park has is its close proximity to houses at the Milton end. There's talk of demolishing the North stand for a bigger stand but it'll cost millions
I would say portsmouth are the biggest club imo But in reality, it’s both Southampton and Portsmouth And this is coming from an AFC Bournemouth fan But one thing Southampton Portsmouth, do not realise is that they are not up-and-coming anymore The future is Bournemouth and Brighton, as clubs and cities Southampton & Portsmouth are historically big cities because of the dockyards the War played a huge part in this country’s history but the docks are not what they were anymore sadly. Bournemouth and Brighton are very up-and-coming cities for business. Big universities are here. Population is growing lots of people moving there And what Brighton have done with their stadium training ground and Academy is phenomenal And Bournemouth new owners promising £50 million training ground that is currently being built and improving the infrastructure of the club i.e. a new stadium in Kings Park and multi club ownership where he’s got five clubs around the world and we are going to be the cherry on top (pardon. The pun) The next 50 years will be very interesting.
Thanks for your comments, I didn’t realise Bournemouth are looking at getting a new ground 🏟️ I agree about Brighton, they have performed miracles in the last few seasons 👍🏻⚽️
southamptons seasons in the premier league: 24 portstmouths seasons in the premier league: 7 it baffles me how people think portsmouth are bigger nowadays, their fans cling on to their trophies from the 1940s
Pompey fan here playing devil's advocate in response to the "1940s" comment... In 2022, the median age of the population of the United Kingdom was 40.7 years. For arguements sake, lets round this down to 40 years in 2024 i.e. people born in 1984. Now we'll consider the age of the average aged person, every time each respective club has won a trophy since birth. Since 1984, Southampton has lifted x1 trophy, the Championship Playoffs in 2024 (Avg. Age: 40 years). Portsmouth on the other hand has won x4 trophies: Championship Champions 2002/2003 (Avg Age: 19 years), FA Cup Winners 2008 (Avg. Age: 24 years), League 2 Champions 2016/2017 (Avg. Age: 33 years), and League 1 Champions 2023/2024 (Avg Age 40 years). Of all the trophies listed above, only the FA Cup is considered one of the x7 major trophies in England. AI Overview states: The term "ultimate goal" refers to the final result or aim of a long series of events. "Ultimate" is an adjective that describes something as the most extreme or important because it is the original, final, or best. In footballing terms, this would translate into a club outrightly winning their respective league and/or cup(s) they compete in within any given season. Trophies alone, this swings in Portsmouths favour 4-1 (2005 & 2010 spring to mind in recent memory 😉). One could also argue that Southampton's playoff triumph fell short of the "ultimate goal" of winning the league. But let's give them at least one "trophy" to even the playing field. In terms of winning a major English trophy in recent memory, Portsmouth's FA Cup triumph in 2008 (Avg. Age: 24) is absolutely clear. Southampton have unfortunately failed to win a major trophy since 1976 (Avg. Age: -8 *i.e. not in living memory of the average aged person). In terms of achieving their "ultimate goals", I would argue Portsmouth, year on year since 1984, have been more successful in recent memory. Or is it just the taking part that counts? Discuss... 🤔 PUP 💙
We just won another title and Fratton is fine as it is. I knew it would be tight with those along the road but trust me if you measured passion Pompey would win by a country mile.
It doesn't matter to the die hard fans what others think of their kleb, as thick and thin we stick with our Kleb. Yes the dross that come in help push the Kleb up as success is achieved, but for most I believe, an even balance measure of success is best. A trophy here and there, or a good cup run. promotion, or dare I say, that poison challace of top six and Europe.. I have seen it wirth Bwighton, My Club. Somerthing about the heart beat. Don't get me wrong. I think where we are now is perfecto. I just wouldn't want our fan base to turn salty likie certain Klebs when they don't win every week as they expect. I like the fact we live for the giant killing still. To boot, prices. One it appears needs a morgage to take the family, if indeed you can get tickets. What does being a 'Big Club' actually mean. More faceless football shirts on the street. Yes we all want Premiership football, but i what is the cost of being a Liverpool, UTD, CITY, Arsenal. Watchin on the tellybox? Stuck in the Gawds next to a tourist, with no atmosphere, like . Nah..I still like the friendly banter.
Wembley Stadium's record attendance for a football match is 89,874 (Cardiff City v Portsmouth) for the 2008 FA Cup Final. One problem with expanding Fratton Park is that after Goodison Park goes, Fratton Park South Stand will be arguably the most important example of an Archibald Leitch stand in England, including Leitch's iconic lattice truss work. Such a historic structure I would argue should be preserved for the enjoyment and education of future generations.
Record Attendance at Wembley is a good stat to be a part of! I went to Fratton Park on a recent video and I really liked the South Stand, love the old original grounds! Thanks for your comments...
Portsmouth FC holds the record for supporters at Wembley 55.000+ 8th of March 2020 and the 2019 EFL Final. And FA Cup 2008. But the 55.000 was a record ticket landmark. As the biggest Fanbase at a neutral venue at the New Wembley 2020.
In the premier league era, Brightons highest position is 6th, joint with Southampton. Although Southampton did accumulated more points when they finished 6th.
I’m obviously biased but we are the biggest club on the South Coast. We’ve had the best players of all the sides (Le God, Bale, Shearer, Mane, Van Dijk, Kevin Keegan, Alan Ball, Shilton, Pelle and the list goes on). Out of all the sides (albeit not this season) we’ve spent by far and away tue most time in divisions above all these sides). Southampton fans also donated to help save Bournemouth from liquidation, we put our hands into our pockets to donate our hard earned cash to help save them. I will however add in, even though it pains me to say it, that Pompey could have the best fans. Playing in the Lower leagues for most of your clubs history helps keep the loyal fans and sees the plastic prem fans disappear. Now we’ve been relegated all away games on sale are sold out, next home games sold out too and season tickets at record high numbers.
Thanks for your comments, nothing wrong for being biased, you should see my Gillingham videos, they are well biased. 😀 I think Southampton have done well with their fan base practically doubling it from The Dell 👍🏻⚽️
Southampton ain’t even on pompeys level when we are in the same tier as them. Just check Wembley attendances. We sell out everytine, hold the record attendances for a fa cup final, sell 55000 tickets to play Salford in the pizza cup. 250,000 people turned up on Southsea common when we won the fa cup. Sorry but there’s no competition really.
YOU DOPE look at portsmouths away following probably the best in England away to Liverpool on a Tuesday night for a league cup game clapped by the cop and BOB paisley said after the game he could not honestly say that Liverpool do not take 16,000 away fans to a cup final.
On the 28th October 1980. I was there plus it was on a Tuesday night. 16.000 plus Portsmouth supporters turned up at Anfield and out sung the Cop. Look it up.

When you can sell one player who covers the whole cost of a new Stadium and state of art training facilities your on track.@@danielkerr4100
You’d be surprised how many pompey fans there are outside of Portsmouth, I’ve met hundreds in Essex, Mostly in pubs though
Well done. As a stateside Cherries supporter, I feel confirmed that your effort reveals what a special moment in our history this is. Onward and upward with Andoni!
Appreciate the upward curve you are currently on, there are so many clubs that would like to be where you are 👍🏻
It just goes to show how big Portsmouth FC is. It holds the Wembley stadium attendance record. Plus Fratton Park over the last 3 years is having an upgrade. I'm sure when promoted the ground will be increased. Pompey the Pride of the South.
They could fill a 30.000 Fratton Park couldn’t they??
Portsmouth are bigger, not being biased but social media shouldn’t be included, our success doesn’t come close by any other club on the south coast
100%
You only need to win the league cup and you have got the clean sweep of all the titles, not many clubs can say that 👍🏻
Brighton fan here of over 50 years, would love to have pompey's history.fratton was always a hostile place to go,back in the day,Southampton no mugs either.i would always include Plymouth in this, they have so much potential
Yea you are right as there is a rivalry between Plymouth and Portsmouth, think it’s called the dockside derby, thanks for your comments 👍🏻⚽️
@@mattthegroundhopper9242 The 'Dockyard Derby' is a modern media invention.

They took 50,000 to Wembley for the check a trade trophy🤣☝🏻
They are also the most successful club on the south coast by far too.
Thanks, you are confirming what my mate has been saying all along 👍🏻⚽️
Portsmouth fans just making shit up again. Southampton took 50,000 to the 2010 JPT final in 2010, and had a campaign to have more. Portsmouth and Sunderland jointly hold the record for the highest attendance at Wembley 85,021 but only 42,500 were Pompey. What you're getting confused by is the fact that Pompey claimed they had sold 50,000 tickets to the JPT final in April 2020. When that match actually took place in 2021 there was a grand total of 0 Portsmouth fans there. Why are you lot so poorly educated?
Nothing us Saints supporters didn't expect :)

Thanks Berlin Dave, yes I remember the days Brighton were ground sharing with the Gills. How far have they come on since 👍🏻 UTG
Bournemouth is one of the richer steads in Britain. The football ground also luckily sits in a big park. Shame nowt new stadium.
As a numbers guy, I like your approach. As a Pompey fan, I like your closing comments :)
Thanks for your comments, i think Pompey could be huge, but like a lot of clubs in England they just need a bigger ground 👍🏻🏟️

Very true portsmouth ground has always held them back and they are bigger, just look at the trophys they won, and old attendances.have a catchment area of between 500,000 700,000 people.
That’s what my mate keeps telling me, thanks for your comments 👍🏻
But isn’t Southampton’s (and Brighton’s) catchment areas also in alikewise numbers as Portsmouth’s catchmouth?
But Southamptons catchment area is about 1.5 million
Good video Matt, Pompey are the biggest and most successful out of the four, a look at the history books back it up. Unfortunately a lack of investment in Fratton over the years and questionable owners have let us slip behind the likes of Saints and Brighton, where really we should be top flight regulars with around 40k gates. Thankfully with the Eisners on board were now catching up. Onwards and upwards.
Thanks Stephen, I was surprised how much you have won as a club, thanks for your comments 👍🏻⚽️
Thanks for your comments, Bournemouth are a shining example for all the smaller teams, good luck for the upcoming season 👍🏻
As a saints fan I can honestly say I've never had a problem with b'mouth always used to look for therye results
Compare & contrast.... 2022 vs 2023. Both pompey and saints play Sheffield weds on opening day of season. 2022 Pompey take 2k fans for a Saturday 3pm kick off....2023 saints take 3k on a friday 8pm kick off.

What struck me about this video - and what a good job you’ve done, btw - is that although Pompey have the greater history, the big weaknesses are the ground and social media presence. I’m sure being outside the Prem is a big factor in both, but the club must address both if they are to have sustained success.

They have now ticked every box regarding the titles 👍🏻⚽️
I'm a Bournemouth fan but we will never be 'bigger' than Soton or Pompey.
Although on the pitch, we are obviously trying to grow.
Brighton never really used to be bigger than us, at the Goldstone, there were periods of low crowds.
Recently they have run their club brilliantly though and support has grown.
With our new owners, we are using them as something to aim for.
Thanks for your comments, as a Gills fan, we are looking at you as our inspiration 👍🏻⚽️

Haha... what a Skate thing to say.

Portsmouth average 15k fans in league one, they only sell14,500 season tickets so everyday fans still can buy. It not even a debate who is the biggest clib
Thanks David, you may get your derby back next season 👍🏻⚽️
There is no simple answer here, they are all bigger in different ways. Brighton is currently the highest ranked team (and arguably the largest local population of supporters to draw from), Portsmouth have the most trophies in their cabinet, Southampton have spent the longest period in the top flight, and Bournemouth have... what they have.
What a very diplomatic answer that is, you should be a politician👍🏻⚽️

Interesting video mate, and quite a fair way of assessing who’s ‘biggest’…social media aside.
It confirms what we all know that there is still, in 2024, massive untapped potential in Pompey, mainly due to the capacity of Fratton Park, not to mention endless awful owners up until the fans saved the club.
I’d much rather have our history and passion as opposed to just existing, albeit in a higher league.
We need a few more points for holding two (new) Wembley attendance records.😜
As I type this we’re 8 points clear at the top of League one with 90 points and 4 games to play so hopefully we’re on our way back.
Thanks for your comments, I have now dropped the social media round in more recent videos 👍🏻⚽️

In terms of success I would have to say Portsmouth. Brighton and Hove Albion + Bournemouth have never won a major trophy (Charity shield isn't a major trophy) and Southampton just have the one FA Cup. I had an inkling that Portsmouth is bigger, especially considering they made more inroads when in the Prem, sameway Brighton are doing now. They were successful too.
Brighton is a blue print for all clubs that want to be successful ⚽️👍🏻
Good video Matt and Saints obviously and rightly are proved to be the biggest club! However, I slightly disagree with your last point about if Portsmouth had a bigger ground they could become the biggest club. They are basically an island (as they keep telling everyone) and as such are limited by the size of the city. Therefore, if they had a 30,000+ stadium, where would the extra fans be drawn from? If outside the Premier League (where they usually are) and even if back in the Championship and doing reasonably well, they'd still struggle to get 25,000 fans on a regular basis.
Thanks Andy, nice to hear from a Southampton fan, unfortunately I was at St Mary’s the day you got relegated, great stadium though 🏟️👍🏻⚽️
@@mk1aquatic739 thanks for the info regarding all the improvements around the ground, very helpful 👍🏻⚽️

Absolutely despise the skates, and for good reason. Bournemouth aren’t our rivals, although they claim to be. Always been saints Pompey and will always stay that way. Bournemouth and Brighton are very up-and-coming cities for business. Big universities are here. Population is growing lots of people moving there

it baffles me how people think portsmouth are bigger nowadays, their fans cling on to their trophies from the 1940s
Fair point
Age: 33 years), and League 1 Champions 2023/2024 (Avg
Age 40 years).
Discuss... 🤔 PUP 💙
Southampton clearly have the biggest fanbase. They are everywere. However Brighton are on the rise and recent years Bournemouth have grown alot

Love the term the pizza cup, thanks for your comments 👍🏻⚽️ 🍕
Wtf!
You actually needed to research this and found this out l
Of course 👍🏻👍🏻
It's pompey obviously 🙄
It could be in the future teddy 👍🏻
YOU DOPE look at portsmouths away following probably the best in England away to Liverpool on a Tuesday night for a league cup game clapped by the cop and BOB paisley said after the game he could not honestly say that Liverpool do not take 16,000 away fans to a cup final.
Thanks William, I’m actually saying Portsmouth could be the biggest club, so what’s with the ‘dope’ comment?
On the 28th October 1980. I was there plus it was on a Tuesday night. 16.000 plus Portsmouth supporters turned up at Anfield and out sung the Cop. Look it up.
lol….. Southampton fc top club on the south coast not like the poorer part of Hampshire
Still no Southampton versus Portsmouth derby, we keep on waiting
Club go on sucess obviously portsmouth win team to watch out for is brighton
