    I think its great how heath just lights up around his wife. You can tell she just melts his heart like butter. My wife does the same thing to me. I get like a lovestruck schoolboy when I can tell she is happy with me. What a great path you are building with the family! Thanks for giving us a glimpse.

    When I helped build over 20 Habitat Houses, we tried to get the tub and put it in place before the walls went up. Much easier and you can make the room to fit. Looks great, Michael Kroeger.

    Husband plumber put laundry on 2nd floor of farm house. We never installed it because after we were up in the am everything happened on the 1st floor and it was inconvenient to run upstairs frequently. My command center was the kitchen/office all day and into the night. Then lights out! Kids ran their own clothes upstairs. 1/2 bath by back door, loved him for that.

      I grew up in an old house built pre electricity. The washer and drier was in the kitchen. It was literally sink, dishwasher, washer and then the drier. My mother hated the look, but loved how easy it was. She never forgot a load in the washer and the dining room table was handy to sort and fold. When we were young she made piles for people to carry upstairs when they got home from school. When we were older it would be an after school chore to deal with the clean clothing.

    You will do what you want and what you think works for your family, but a few more thoughts on your lay out. I know that more often now washers and driers are on the bedroom floor and in a lot of situations that makes sense. In yours being in a perhaps an off grid property it makes more sense (to me) to do it on the ground floor. If you are coming in dirty from outside and showering downstairs, carrying dirty clothing upstairs isn't fun. If you are hanging clothing outside, do you really want to be carrying baskets of wet clothing downstairs?
    The other advantage is that if you need to set up drying racks or lines indoors, you stove is going to be downstairs. I do recommend a laundry chute, I love mine. It takes up less room than a hamper and we ended up with no piles of dirty clothing in rooms because the kids liked using it. Ours has a small door that leads to a chute made up of plain old square duct. The bottom ends with a stop and a turn so that the laundry backs up. Sort of like a "J" . Others in the neighborhood have removed that so it drops in a laundry basket.

    I hate to chime in and I hate to see others discount what this guy is doing. I find it extraordinary that he is doing all of this by him self. I also know too that my opinion probably doesn't mean squat to this guy. I know in my life that when I get an idea in my head, it's hard for someone else to shake me away from it. ...all that said, I think Heath somehow needs to reconfigure the bathroom to keep the plumbing off the exterior walls (I'm agreeing with Oldtimer Lee). I love the idea of the upstairs laundry. I'm sure Cedar will appreciate being able to fold the clothes for the family and then just walk them down the hall to their respective dressers or closets for the kids (or, just plop a folded pile of clean clothes on their beds and let them put the clothes away!)... HOWEVER, it does seem tight up on the second floor for a laundry room. One other thing I know now, is that "you live and you learn!" Keep up the good work, and keep pumping out the video coverage of this project/process!!! I LOVE IT!

    You should make a separate WC for the toilet upstairs, that will make your life a lot easier. Also, consider putting a sink in the master bedroom - it's done a lot in European houses and is surprisingly practical. I would personally move the master closet to be on the wall between you and the kids and reclaim that space for something else. Finally, you should get stackable washer/dryers if you have the headroom as this will give you more space for the bathroom - yes they are a little more money but you can't really make more room.

      I agree. The bathroom door from the hallway looks like it would hit anyone standing at the basin. When you have a lot of people trying to get in and out in the morning then you will need plenty of room to get by each other. Give it extra room instead of as much storage near the stairs and if it works out that the bathroom is taking too much unused space you could add storage in there afterwards.

  • @peggyannparkes1863
    @peggyannparkes1863 6 лет назад +2

    Looking good. But I'd bet you will end up wanting more room in the bathroom. Sliding doors into the bathroom might help. And I think plumbing walls are 2x6 or 2x8 (it's been a while since I framed out a bathroom.) That might throw off your 60" calculation for the bathroom. I'd also turn that master closet into just regular closet and move it to the wall between yours and the boys room. Consider moving the wash room downstairs. I know it's a lot more convenient upstairs, but it might end up more practical downstairs. Good Luck. Looking forward to the next video and seeing your decisions and progress.

    You could do a split bath design where there is a pocket door seperating the vanity area and the toilet/bath area. Allows for more than one person to use the bathroom at a time.

    I so love the laundry room upstairs near the bedrooms. I know the laundry room will be a small space, but I hate carrying laundry anywhere, especially up or downstairs. So having it close to the spaces where it will be stored will be a breeze. Love it.

    I would strongly recommend you take some of the ideas listed onbaord and have a think about your layout. You could utilise the space under the stairs for the storage, I personaly wouldn't dedicate the valuable floor area updstairs for your laundary, as other suggested phehaps have it part of the kitchen down stairs allowing for a larger upstairs bathroom or an additional ensuite for yourself. Keep up the great work.

It's not up to me and my name is not Cedar but with a house full of kids and two adults, you really could use two full baths...smaller master bath, larger hall bath for the kids upstairs. A quick suggestion with the door to the laundry room would be a pocket door so that it's not so tight and if you have a tendency to do a lot of laundry in one day you're not having to bump up against the door with a laundry basket. I'm also thinking a pocket door might be nice for the master bedroom bathroom access if you still want to do a bathroom door access there the only concern I would have would be house sound resistant it would be so getting a solid core door would probably be a good idea so if someone gets up in the middle of the night you're less like you to hear it in your bedroom. I also highly recommend doing lots of sound proof insulation in those walls between the bedrooms and always just with how tight the space is it would make it that much more comfortable and even maybe consider doing it on the floor underneath the bedrooms at least so that when the kids are in bed you can have a nice conversation downstairs without having to worry about the level of your voice or if you have guests over.

    Agree with the pocket door statement below... but also, an additional 1/2 bath would be huge in the master. Delete the door into the common bath and make a door instead for a little 1/2 bath. Parental privacy as well as not waiting in line are things the adults deserve at this point. Indulge yourself. peace and love

    Need to move the stair way to right in front of the front door or close to the center of the house, right at top of stairs is all master and left is the 2 other bedrooms one in each corner. It will help with your heating. You can put your bathroom right over the front door and that will give a split bedroom concept. Its the way Cape Cod houses are layed out back east but it limits wasted hall way space and makes the house heat much better. You can play around with it and see how the downstairs lays out. Usually kitchen/dining on one side and living room on the other.

    Remember the plasterboard/concrete board on 2 walls will reduce the inside space for the tub. Concrete board should be 1/2 inch thick if you are going to tile or use a tub surround -- thus you will only have 4 ft 11 inches for your 5 ft tub. My Dad made the same mistake when building his house -- and couldn't figure out why the tub would not fit lololol

    • @monicapttrsn
      @monicapttrsn 6 лет назад +2

      I am absolutely positive that he needs 5 ft for the tub. The tub nailing flange from end to end is 5 ft. Only the wall above the tub will be 4' 11". I've studied this over and over and went to Home Depot and actually measured a standard tub.

    • @craftsoda

    Please try to avoid plumbing on outside walls, if possible. Limit it, as much as you possibly can. Even here in the SE US, when temps drop into single digits, I leave cabinet doors open under the kitchen sink. Over the years I had too much experience with frozen pipes and sometimes burst pipe. (sigh) Yes, it may mean more materials, more effort, and design changes. But, will be worth it, if a pipe bursts on the second floor.
    Please reconsider and put the laundry down stairs, as many other's have mentioned. Off grid means, or should mean drying clothes outdoors when the weather is good. Saving on energy consumption is the (a) major focus for being off grid. It is much easier to take dry clothing upstairs than it is to carry baskets of wet clothing down stairs. May not be an issue now. I guarantee you that it will be one after knowing, first hand, what aging does to a body. (sigh)
    Appreciate what you're doing! Follow your dreams, while you can. Some of mine were not while I was still physically able to do so. Thus, treasure, even more, that that were completed. That doesn't stop the wishful thinking of what might have been......

If you should move it ( laundry room ) you could extend one or more rooms and the hallway does look awfully tight once you put up the walls, I'm not telling what to do and I wouldn't because I'm one of those viewers that sits back to watch you work. Nice job, keep up the work and I do agree with the wife on how the outside of the house looks. Larry

    Just wonder about the extra storage your giving up in the bathroom for the extra door. You could put linen shelves there instead. Just a thought.

    Don't mean to take away from what your doing but for all of you to use that bathroom it's not near big enough .. you will be a lot better off with laundry room down stairs with large pantry...that way you can give your bathroom more room...

      The downstairs has a concrete floor.
      In order to put plumbing in down stairs. You would have to break up the concrete.

      Everyone who lives in the country knows the laundry should be right next to the entrance so it is easy to clean off dirty clothes and other things you bring inside. Dragging dirty work clothes through the whole house is a big mistake. By not having the laundry downstairs the kitchen sink will end up being used for washing muddy and greasy tools and boots.

      You wouldn't have to break up the concrete for the Laundry room and pantry together , so your so smart were is the water heater going ?

    You will hate not drawing the actual space for walls in your planning stage. Working from a single line is most deceptive. Make SURE you draw where your wall 2x4s will be going. You already have discovered this very same error with where that wall wants to intersect with the window!!! Imagine that same error happening in your bathroom! I speak from experience. When it comes to bathroom designing, you NEVER have as much room as you think you had when planning. And, I second the advice to NEVER put plumbing in outside walls. You are just begging for trouble if you do. And, spacing around doors is critical. I can't tell you how many times I have run into that disaster. I could write a book on that topic.

    Building codes of Australia require a landing after 9 steps so I would have run it around the corner in any case. My cottage only has a ground floor.

      longlivetheempire I purchased a mattress once that fit in a very small box. As soon as I unboxed it and cut through the plastic it took a few minutes and it inflated to a full size I was thoroughly impressed. Not only that but it's a really nice mattress. That is always an option. 😀

    Hi. Love your videos 😄 It's a small bathroom. What about dropping the door from your room ? It is too much for a so small room. Anoying when smashing into the bathtub. Do you realy need it ??

    Hallway looks too narrow. Bathroom isn’t big enough. PS, Might want to keep water lines out of exterior walls. Use High Quality Pex Pipe, no fittings in walls and if you ever have frozen pipe, Pex expands. Very Easy to work with. Vinny 🇺🇸

    • @hartstudebakerkid
      @hartstudebakerkid 6 лет назад +1

      Yes pex expands but the fittings do not. I have seen jobs done by city plumbers using pex that leaves the brass Ts at low spots. This kind of rural plumbing all needs to be graded so it can be drained if need be.

    Have you ever thought about doing away with the tub and just going with a walk in shower? The tub in our house is one of the least used things. I would like to rip it out but my wife wants it even though she has never used it.

    Heath I have a question about your layout. You said that your line is 5' on the bathroom. how wide is the hallway after allowing for a 4" wall there? other than that it looks great.
