my brother bought a farm in southwest wisconsin, the owner was in his early nineties. the house was where he was born. and nothing had ever been done to bring it forward except electricity was added. wood cookstove, wood franklin stove. outhouse. pretty primative. what it did have was cold springwater pumped up to the sink. if warm water was desired you heated it on the stove. the thing is everything was single walled stovepipe, the parlor stove went into a brick chimney built into the center of the house. the cookstove went thru a castiron ventilator thru the second floor into a wood supported mini brick chimney to exit the roof.considering the age of the house.it worked well

Nothing like the satisfaction of a start to finish completed project. Nice job.Just like your roof vents though, that roof flashing is the wrong type for either a corrugated or standing seam metal roof. However, they are the perfect temporary solution on top of the sticky paper until you can roof. Even if you use composition roofing they will need to be redone. You could get away with stacking one if you went with comp but if you use metal it will have to come off.

Hey brother, please get that away from that wall and put your 45's on it. Maybe a rock or brick wall behind the stove to radiate some heat. Great video.

  • @hammer9390

Good looking stove. When you enclose the stovepipe upstairs, think about putting in low voltage fans (like computer fans) to use the heat from the enclosure . Love your channel! Glade you made it off of the roof safely! I could not have done that. I almost had to
hold my breath just watching. If you have to go back on the roof, please consider using a harness; my heart will thank you.

  • @57firetruck
    @57firetruck 6 лет назад +29

The cost of propper safety gear (harness and retractable lanyard) is peanuts compaired to the medical bills if you come off that roof. Put the ladder on the gutter side, not the gable side.
You need to set a better example for your kids.
Also, be VERY careful having a fire in that stove with it SO close to the combustible wall...there's a reason they want it 24" away...you're doing good for a beginner, but please be safe!

The floor is concrete, but yeah, some corrugated steel behind the stove would be a great idea. It would help reflect the jeat back into the room and much of it away from that dry timber wall.

If you do build a box around the chimney pipe upstairs you might be able to put some duct work on it and suck that heat back down and blow it towards the front door with a small low powered fan perhaps a computer fan just enough to warm the area around the walk-in door

Congratulations on getting some heat into your work area. However, please put some sort of metal or heat resistant shield behind that stove. At least until you move it out from the wall. I'd sure hate to see that back wall combust after all the work you've put in to that house. Keep an eye on your Tyvek, if it starts wrinkling and/or melting on the outside by the wood stove, it is getting way too hot against that wall. I don't know why I thought you already put the roof on, but I was shocked when you climbed up there to an unfinished roof. Glad you made it up there and back down safely. I think you need to find a 28 - 32 foot extension ladder. You'll be living there for a long time, and a folding ladder in the bucket of a back-ho really isn't that safe. I am pretty sure that none of your viewers want to see you take a fall.

We were building my daughter’s very tall house in Louisa Va about 25 years ago. I was driving up from Ct. to help. I arrived and found my Son-in-law with his 20 fat ladder in the bucket of the backhoe. He was atI turned around the limit of the ladder and the reach of the bucket reach stretching to work on installing the fascia. I turned around went back to the building supply house and bought a 40 ft ladder. Went back to the job and got the son in law off the toy ladder and back on the ground. The ladder arrived and it was a beast. Must have weighed close to 100 lbs. he had the. Muscle and could handle it. I could only watch. The rungs were about 2 feet wide. He is a contractor and does beautiful work,. He and his brother have built several million dollar homes. Just telling this story to illustrate that good smart people will do dumb things in the effort to push a job along. I still tell this story and everyone laughs at the visualization of this event. Then the room gets quiet. Everyone is thinking how close to death or crippling injury Mark was working. I spent 30 years in the elevator business. Safety was our watchword. Almost every year there was a story in our company newsletter of a constructor or maintenance examiner going down the hoistway. Today all of the field men and even the service reps and supervisors must wear a full body harness tied off when in the hoistway on car top

Nice job. Chimney looks tall enough to give you great draft. For safety I would put a piece of fireproof material behind the stove while you finish the house. Prolonged heat may overheat the studs & plywood. Protect what you built. That should do a great job heating the house, especially after you insulate it. 👍 Vinny 🇺🇸

Your codes are similar to ours in the uk.
The 2ft @ 10ft and 2" from combustibles (600mm at 2.8 mtr out and 50mm from combustibles 😂), you've done the right thing getting it way above the ridge. Keeping it well away from swirling down draughts.
We have a g number on the end of the flue number that may increase the distance from combustibles ( sometimes it's g100 so 100mm from combustibles !) ours isn't usually triple wall tho, that flue sounds like top quality stuff,, I imagine it's expensive.
Big stove isn't it. Do you have free air requirements allowing combustion air into the room?

Surely you have the proper ally manufactured roof ladders in the US by now, we have in the UK, the ladder itself lies flat on the roof with a quite large metal bracket bolted on to the ladder end that goes over the top of the ridge to the other side, which secures and stops the ladder from slipping off the roof as well as you when you are on it, they also have a pair of wheels on the opposite side to the bracket to shove it up the roof easily, you simply flip it over to the bracket side, when you get it in to position, in the old days, before these ladders were made professionally the roofers would get a joiner (workmate) to make them for them from lengths of wood with batten lattes nailed on for foothold/rungs and 2 pieces of wood boards nailed in to a L shape and the boards secured to the end of the home made ladder with metal straps for strength, I still have a home made one, that my father a joiner (now passed) made one for himself over forty years ago, they never come in wrong to have one.

Tie the Strap on his waist? It looks as if he almost decided to tie it around his neck ;-) ! Baby, this is not good what you show us! I was very lucky when I fell down 26 feet on a concrete floor in a cellar of a paper Plant floor - I was able to stand up by my self and go to the Hospital after I climbed out of the Cellar where I fell down through a hole in the floor. This was in Switzerland in the year 1999. But there were issues left in my spine. The discs were damaged, and a few years later came the late effects. In 2009 I had to learn how to walk on two feet again! I only could walk on 4 Feet back then because of the massive pain due to my spine issue. And today I am heavily on Fentanyl because of constant pain... I am lucky that I live in Austria! We have the Best Social Insurance System in the World (Beside of Denmark), and I was able to retire with a proper Pension. Also, I don`t have to pay for my medics or a doctor, or hospital treatment. This is all paid by the social insurance system.
But YOU, you live in the USA, a Land without any insurance system for the middle class or People with lower income. In the US only the rich can afford to have an accident... It`s just like stone-age... So better take care of yourself!

Is it too expensive to have a sprinkler system, just water hoses, and nozzles inside with a connection outdoor where you can connect a garden hose if you have fire in the house you don't need to run into the fire, just connect water to the system and let the system takes care of the fire, just around the stove, the laundry room and strategic areas in the house.

Heath just curious would you be able to install a heat reclaim in the pipe both upstairs and downstairs to make it more efficient?

I'm pretty sure all of the "experts" you're so upset about just don't want to see this lovely man's hard work end up for naught if he gets injured from unsafe work practices...

Just throw a piece of delta rib behind the stove for a heat shield for now so you do not scorch your studs.

Nerves of steel. But there has to be a safer way to do these high elevation activities. If you fall you're not going to be able to physically stop yourself just hanging on to a rope as you do. Could have moved the backhoe to that side and worked straight out of the bucket instead of traversing the roof in slick conditions as you did. I know other people have said it but remember your kid's and family buddy. I'd hate for you to get hurt.

If though really want to justify your stove, read ( if you read books, some don't or don't have the time) "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen, the first of three books he wrote on survival after an EMP disaster. It is as real as stories can get with a Foreward by Bill Gingrich, a former Senator.

You sure got balls.... big ones on that roof. EPA regulations now require wood stoves that meet emissions and seems like you have had the building inspector check everything. Most communities require a permit to be pulled for wood stove installs so their fire departments are not saving your family or house. But where you live maybe anything goes. Does you inspector allow an older wood stove in a new dwelling? Good question to ask before you finish the stove install.
You are going to have an issue not just with back wall distance but side as well as the flooring material ... I understand your need to have the heat while working but before your next fire go to a lumber yard and get a sheet of fire resistant cement board with the stove so close to the wall as a temp fix. It's usually a lot hotter from the stove pipe but maybe triple wall pipe doesn't reach burnable temps.
You will get a great draft with the pipe two feet over the roof peak ! Idaho has a great program for buying a new wood stove with tax deductions if the Inspector allows you to put that stove in... if you then want a new one you can then buy an EPA efficient stove and get all the deductions. You can link to that from the EPA's site
