Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. Ha...I've slept behind that Pony Express office in like 1997......got really sick there and admitted to a really nice hospital there for 5 days. Lots of elevated freeways in St. Joe........snapping turtles by the river too

Jesse James is a legend on the level of Robinhood in some areas down South. My late husband was a great admirer.
When I was a little girl I was very horse crazy and was FASCINATED by the Pony Express. I thought it was literally the coolest thing ever and wished so hard that I could have been a rider. Many years later I worked as horse staff on a summer ranch camp for kids and we set up a Pony Express of our own, we'd collect mail, saddle up, and deliver the mail to the kids' cabins. It was a huge hit!

Really enjoyed this!! My grandfather rode for the pony express for a short while. Then went on to some other amazing adventures including being shot by cattle restless in Montana and working for Buffalo Bill Cody's wild west show where he knew Annie Oakley. To me he was just grandpa. We are envious of your travels right now as we are not planing a trip till Sep. We are grateful you take us along. Blessings!!

My favorite part of the Patee House, was the room with the old electronics.

I've lived in saint joe all my life. A decade ago I was one of the kids getting a tour. You are right in the video I still remember bits of the exhibit. Seeing this video made me nostalgic. You've motivated me to go see it again now that I'm older. Thank you for the content.
I added the Frederick Inn to my list and I see for lunch Tuesday they have pie slices for $2.50!!! Looks like a place you can spend a couple days and still have good places to go. Stay safe and healthy.

I want to visit there someday. My great great grandfather arrived there from Germany in the 1800’s. He was quite the green thumb ram a nursery in St. Joseph, and reportedly helped layout the landscape for the state Capitol grounds. He later came to NM and homesteaded near Santa Fe in the late 1800s. He had a ranch here and housed a few folks who had TB at the time. That’s one reason he came west, to improve his health. If you guys head back West along 36, I recommend stopping in at Harold Warp's Pioneer Village in Minden Nebraska. If you love American history, you'll love it.

Have to say that I would only be repeating most of the excellent comments about your special tribute to the great history of the old west! I agree with all of them. I will have to add my special tribute to you also finding an excellent PIE 😋location. I was already making notes for my trip west and have been through this area but not stayed. I never knew the first station was there much less a great museum. I visited near South Pass seeing a stone monument to the route that crossed my path one trip years ago in Wyoming. I had forgotten the Pony express followed the Oregon and Mormon Trail much of the way. This will definitely be a camp stop for me. Thanks for the tour.

If you happen to be heading down to the Branson area, don't miss the Ralph Foster Museum at College of the Ozarks, another multi story museum with a large variety of surprises. It is located on the campus and staffed by students, as is the school's restaurant. Might as well sample the pie while there!
My great grandmother is buried there. My grandma was born in 1900 there.

I love the world's history, All of it, but it's Americas history that really does it for me. You deliver these stories perfectly and taking us through the museums is Tops, I can never get enough. Hello Vinny!!! We didn't spend much time in Florida and mainly went there so that Linda could see her older sister. We did go to the Atlantic though! We were too late in the season and the heat and humidity were already bad. Now we're in NM and are loving it.

The last time we were in St Joseph Missouri we were also on vacation. Stopped at a hotel and in the middle of the night I had a kidney stone attack, WOW was it bad. For the first ten seconds I thought someone was in our room stabbing me but nope just a kidney stone. Spent several days in the hospital then drove straight home to Indy. Yes, I did pass the stone but I don't have time to type all in the screaming I did in this comment. Loved the video.

Amazing that they could deliver mail by horseback in 10 days despite bad weather, hostile Indians, and the usual dangers with riding horseback full gallop. Once teased my local postmistress that the pony express could deliver a letter in 10 days but my Christmas card took 3 weeks to deliver in town.

St Joe has been 1 of favorites to visit! But then again, I've found several places throughout Missouri I repeadly would re-visit while living there. I'm a big Samuel Clemens fan😉

I remember a visit w/ my parents (age 10) when we came back in the 50's - what struck me most was at that visit, Kats Department Store (still There) had a Kit-Cat clock w/ moving eyes and tail. St. Joseph looks like a really cool place. Those museums seemed very interesting.
When locomotives reached a certain size, I don’t have the exact facts at the moment, they were equipped with Stokers and the fireman no longer shoveled the coal into the firebox. The fireboxes were so large that they required more coal than could be shoveled by hand. The stoker was a mechanism that ran along the bottom of the coal bunker and up to the firebox. It used Archimedes Screws to move the coal and it would dump out on a table in the rear of the firebox where jets of air would blow it to the area of the firebox where it was needed.
That CB&Q locomotive was most certainly stoker fired.

Years ago I traveled through Missouri from Colorado to NJ. I planned a trip that highlighted many historical sites along the way. I found Missouri to be quite a beautiful piece of countryside. I’m trying to recall if you folks had prior visited the NE corner of Missouri in the town of Hannibal, Mark Twain’s childhood stomping grounds, where they have frog jumping contests etc to enjoy. 🐎 🐸
We just passed through Hannibal a few weeks ago but didn't get to spend hardly any time there due to a time constraint. We need to go back. Missouri is one of our top favorite states.

I noticed the rider Johnny Fry, 1840-1863, wondering if he died on the trail? Also your historical videos are my favorite, especially about the west and the 1800's era.
Speaking of the James and Younger gang, My Great, Great Grandfather, Dr George Crutchley of Hardin, Missouri, was reputed to have doctored for the James' from time to time. He finally quit doctoring and opened a general store.
If you ever get back to western Missouri, you need to go to the old wharf district in Kansas City and visit the Steamboat Arabia Museum. Its an interesting glimpse into life in the "west" of the pre-1860's.
That's something I'd like to do!

Great video! We have been to Saint Joe several times. The Patee museum is amazing. When we were there, the curator let my sons see the cast of Jesse’s scull that was made when he was exhumed.
It takes days to go thru that museum thoroughly, it has so much to see. That's a great town for western history.

This is without a doubt the best video you have done.... I love history of this era... I live in south west Missouri and I don't know how but I had no idea all this was in St.Joe...In my defence I am an implant from Oregon 43 years ago but I still should have known this was there..I live about 45min. west of Branson...But I am definitely going to visit this place...!!! That was amazing.!!! And I plan to visit when I get on the road...if you ever get down this way stop and visit or even if you just need a place to stay... I live in a four plex apartment with a little yard and the parking is right in front of my place,and its a very small country town...But your welcome...!!!!

according to the james family the bullet that killed jesse james is in there possession , in the family vault. i was dating a girlfriend of mine that was a direct desendent to jesse james back in the 70s, i was in that house originally at that time .. thats how i knew of the bullet

i lived in st joe until i was about 16 , that would have been in 1966 .i used to visit the park across from the pony express almost daily, if its still there .i remember when they moved james house it was on the hill down the street from my grandparents house . they moved it out to the belt hyway . i remember my history teacher to us kids to tour the house but they wanted 5.00 a head and the teacher would not pay it . i remember him saying jessie james is dead and still robbing people. i think that house has been moved a few times .there used to be electric trolly cars that run in front of the pony express and along side the park and us kids would run behind the cars and pull the rope to disconnect the cars just to hear the driver yell and cuss .man that was a long time ago . thanks for reminding me .

Wonderful video. Truly fascinating! I love old trains. Got to ride the Cumbres Toltec train from Chama NM up into CO. I love trains! Loved the old museums, although I could pass on murder weapons and bones of the dead. Sorry but that creeps me out a bit.🙈 But I did like the old gun collection. I bet that shotgun pistol would about break your wrist when fired 😂. And the restaurant was lovely. Hard to find such a gem these days that serves home cooked meals. You both looked so relaxed and like you really had a good time! I'm glad for you both😊 And this was the first time I noticed Rick has a pierced ear. Good for you, so did my husband. Wow Saint Jo is a very interesting place. I need to go back. Only time I ever stopped there I was riding my bike from sturgis bike week back Jo e to southern Illinois. I was so tired I was falling asleep on my Harley. I stopped at a motel to get a room. The guy said he only had one room. I said I will take it, he said I will show you first and had me walk with him to the room. The door hit the bed when you went in. The bed was up against both walls. You climbed over the bed to get to the bath which I think was pretty normal in size.
Your trip sounds much better lol.
I wonder if that motel is still there?
@@gonagain I don’t know but I usually stay at popular chains. The room I am talking about had to be a storeroom or something that they were able to fit a bed in. No way it could have been a regular room

Jesse James rode far and wide… he stayed at the house of Ms Fannie Reed just a mile east of my house where according to aunt Fannie the sheriff thought he had him penned upstairs and there was a shooting where holes were left in the outside of the house (I saw them back in the 70’s when the house was still standing). Jesse excaped to rome around in the silver creek Ms area east of here… in the 50’s I think there was a movie made called Jesse James and his women at the silver creek area …

Yes, I did. That was in 1990 or 91 when he was in Hawaii for a symposium in Wood Valley on the Big Island. Surprised me when he showed up at our little office at the airport.
