  • Team TaylorMade's Tiger Woods had a video go viral earlier this year with Scottie Scheffler talk about how when he's striping it, he doesn't take a divot. And he was serious, he was so wide on the take away and wide on the followthrough that when he was picking it clean, he doesn't take a divot. #shorts

    tigers explaining a very important concept in the golf swing. we are taught to have turf interaction purely bc it reduces the chance of a poor strike. coming into the ball with a descending blow and taking a divot after the ball ensures that you hit the ball first before anything else. therefore it’s sort of a preventative measure in the case you make a bad swing. however it’s very possible to make an iron bottom out at the very point of impact with a true 0 degree attack angle and make a perfect strike without any divot whatsoever at the same groove height as the descending swing. it’s just that the margin for error is much smaller bc if the swing arc isn’t perfect, you introduce the possibility of getting turf between the ball, hitting it thin, etc.. that’s why when tiger says he doesn’t need to take divots, it’s bc he’s swinging so precisely that the club is bottoming out right at the ball and doesn’t need to take that ‘precaution.’ by doing so, he is maximizing the benefits of a zeroed swing path. assuming both shots are struck cleanly, there is nothing about a descending blow that is advantageous to a zeroed strike. just based on physics, the flatter path creates for more compression, speed and spin control.

    • @adamdodson8055
      @adamdodson8055 27 дней назад +2

      This! There is no physical advantage to taking a divot from a perfect lie when executing a standard golf shot. Divots in this scenario are only necessary because we’re human.

    • @fabbe2620
      @fabbe2620 20 дней назад +1

      The thing is being zeroed out in regards to aoa increases fliers, you could still hit the ball solid and yes increase compression but the loss ,or possibility of loss, in friction is not worth the tradeoff. However the aoa is a widely missunderstood issue regarding divots, you could be steep in your angle of attack and still pick it off the turf, the major factor in what creates a divot is arc height not necessarly aoa. Tigers feel could be that he’s picking it while still being down and pushing off the ground reducing arc height and not creating a big divot

      I dont think youre taught turf interaction or that it's a preventative measure or something that you're TRYING to do PER SE.. I think its just a byproduct of the swing pattern that is taught..ie. Shaft forward, compress the ball, etc..

      @@pobodysnerfect9270 Mr Woods is certainly known for his monotone voice. But it's simple, Just as Tiger stated. His swing was wider ( flatter) when hitting his natural draw so when he's flushing the ball, he's picking the ball clean meaning no divot. Especially with the long irons (Think long iron slight draw pick out of a fairway bunker).
      If one has a different type of swing & are a digger who needs more of bounce help on your wedges, it may be harder for someone to understand who's not used to this style. Right off the bat it made total sense to me because I'm more shallow and my divots are very, very small when flushed

    Plenty of great players are just barely “scrapers” of the ground, especially with middle and long irons. Once watched Adam Scott on the range hitting middle and long irons and it was eye opening. He wasn’t taking pork chops, or even bacon strips. Just hardly bruising the grass. And if you watch any LPGA golf, some of them pick it clean and still compress the ball nicely. Not coincidently, most of them draw the ball. About the worst thing anyone can say to a bogey golfer is “you have to hit down on the ball and take a divot to compress the ball.” Because they will be so steep, chopping wood, hitting nothing but glancing blows.
    In the men’s game, the draw as a go to shot has definitely been replaced by faders. Some that move it so much left to right, it almost can’t even be classified a fade. So you’re not gonna see the polite scrapers of the ground much any more. Sort of a lost art.

    • @OrvinReyes
      @OrvinReyes 7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, so odd to prefer a fade when fades statistically lose more distance and accuracy vs a safe draw. Just because people can’t hit draws doesn’t mean they shouldn’t learn how to hit it. It’s the first shot everyone must learn

      Combine modern equipment, firm greens and power to burn, and the fade becomes the preferred shot shape for today’s pros. They don’t miss the slight distance loss. Naturally, and I suppose this is not uncommon, my swing is more shallow as the irons get longer so I take less and less of a divot the longer the iron is. However, I remember 1 golfer (probably a scratch golfer)at the range hitting a 1 iron. After some smack talking and chest puffing, he put a ball on the cement behind the hitting mat and and just ripped one down the range without leaving a mark on the sole of the club. Another golfer who had no business with a 1 iron even in his bag commented something along the line of "Yeah, but can you do that with my 1 iron", implying that the other guy was familiar with his 1 iron only. The Scratch golfer striped another ball down the range with the smack talkers 1 iron, flipped the club over and sure enough there was no scratch on the sole. The rest of the range session was a blur for me, but I remember buying a 2 iron and getting rid of it about as quickly as I bought it.

    To ‘flush’ a golf shot…the bottom of the swing is a smidge past the ball. Top player golf is where the divots begins after the club head makes contact with the ball. …club head descending onto the ball. It also creates the ever popular ‘spin’ when ball lands on the green…of which we see in tv, video, etc. For Tiger to ‘not’ take a divot, he’s probably hitting the ball a groove or more to close to the leading edge…which by definition isn’t flushing it…it’s not where the sweet spot/center point of the club head is.

He's explaining some of the shot shaping element in this video, so there's a bit of that i.e. some of those highlights he would've been hitting fades / big cuts where naturally the attack angle will be steeper. Not to say you can't hit a nice draw with a hefty divot, which I'm sure at times he would've done too. Even Tiger isn't a robot, his swing would've changed slightly tournament to tournament, day to day, so I bet some days he was steeper than others and just made it work!

    I’ve watched this guy, from a few feet away, practice and warmup on multiple occasions. He’s trolling you guys and Scotty in particular!
    Or………he’s trying to live up to Hogan again. Hogan also had the “no divot” reputation. But once you realize he grew up playing on hard pan, and many courses he played tournaments on weren’t much better, it all makes sense when you watch him taking monster divots at soft Augusta.

    It makes sense when you hit a draw you do have a shallow swing, but any fading shot or purposely sliced shots will definitely cause a divot. Long irons its unnecessary to take a divot simply cuz you want forward roll not backspin.

    • @ironsideeve2955
      @ironsideeve2955 7 месяцев назад +1

      If you can hit a draw and only brush the grass, then you can hit a fade and brush the grass too.
      To be fair, doing it with a low fade is pretty hard

    • @HeavenlyFloodofRegen
      @HeavenlyFloodofRegen 6 месяцев назад

      Long irons still have backspin. A ball won’t stay airborne without backspin. If you hit a 4 iron with “forward roll” it would launch in the low 10s degree, but then, instead of continuing upward and reaching an apex around 80ft it would be power diving to the ground. You’d be lucky to get 100 yards of carry. An tour-like 4 iron will have mid to upper 4000s rpm of backspin.
      Backspin creates friction against the air molecules creating lift that helps the ball remain aloft despite gravity. The goal is to have the appropriate amount of backspin for the kind of shot you’re hitting. Even with a driver you want enough backspin to maximize flight and controllability, just not so much it balloons up and loses potential distance. Again, you’re trying to optimize backspin, not eliminate it entirely - unless you’re putting. On a putt you do want forward roll.

    • @casualguy3938
      @casualguy3938 6 месяцев назад

      It is impossible to cause forward spin with any golf club, even a putter with 4 degrees of loft unless the ball is on a tee. Think of how you put top spin in ping pong, and you'll see it is impossible to bring the club face up into the ball to impart top spin because the ground is in the way. So, every golf shot puts some type of back spin on the ball, and the only way the ball spin will change direction is after it lands.

    • @ironsideeve2955
      @ironsideeve2955 6 месяцев назад

      @@casualguy3938 its not impossible 🙂

    • @HeavenlyFloodofRegen
      @HeavenlyFloodofRegen 6 месяцев назад

      @@casualguy3938 uh, hitting up on the ball is a key to good putting. The reason is to get topspin on it.
      You want to strike at or ever so slightly just barely above the ball’s equator with the center or just slightly above center of the face as the stroke has just passed it’s lowest point and just begun to ascend.
      Here’s a quote from Sean Toulon about PGA players.
      “They all hit up on their putts for the most part, and a lot of them will just slightly have a little forward shaft lean; it’s like a forehand in tennis,” Toulon says. “That’s how you kind of impart the top spin on the ball. You’re hitting up on it, slightly delofting with that shaft in front, and that’s what creates that upward motion on the ball and gets it rolling quicker and sooner.”

    Tom Watson talks about this too. Picking the ball with long irons. No divots. Obviously, we all know Tiger can take divots with every club in the bag and he clarified that clearly when talking about types of shots. But I’ve seen him on the range before and he practices picking the ball with his long irons. The ball comes out lower with less spin. Again, it’s a practice habit. All you geniuses who think you’re catching Tiger in a lie are such haters. It’s so ridiculous. Scottie asked the question to begin with because he was standing on the range WATCHING him hit shots without taking divots. And again, this isn’t unprecedented stuff. Tom Watson did the same thing on the range and on the course with 5i and above when hitting his stock shot.
