Just to clear up the confusion, the 'Gavin' line that John says at 7:57 was put in for the effect. It fit well with Nigel running away, so I left it in. John doesn't say that during or after reading the letter.
lol Why even do that? Trying to make the video seem more mysterious or something ? Don't do that next time, makes it seem like you are trying to present something else.
its an easter egg for Gavin free from achievement hunters as achievement hunter have done a lot of youtube videos in rockstar games like GTA so rockstar had jack Pattillo from achievement hunters voice the hotel manager from valentine and Geoff Ramsey from AH voice one of the train stations attendants and included this for Gavin free as he was not available to do a voice for a character
@@James_Philip915 just think if he found out that his friend Gavin that he knew for most his life was him he would probably have a mental breakdown or something.
Y'all talk bout how a good friend Tom is but haven't you all forgot Gavin who help Nigel get back up in times of need. No hate'n on Tom, but when I know the truth behind Gavin (thanks to Strange Man) I'd come to like this "personality".
I just had a thought. Nigel would be a hilarious cosplay to do for comic-con. When you enter whatever convention you're attending, just keep calling out for "Gavin" and see what answers you get. I think the responses would be gold.
I think they didnt do that, because the entire "Gavin" thing is a running joke within the game and the devs, and I think to some level, they hoped that it would go viral, boosting the game's sales. I think they intended it to be another "....Then I took an arrow to the knee" thing. These viral things are like a massive advertisement for the game, because everyone (even non-gamers) find out about it eventually.
Rockstar: hey lets add a guy looking for his friend, (doesn’t give any details) Players: “very intense detective work and lots of research to find gavin”
Rockstar did that for a reason, they're talented bastards. Why else would he looked all worn out and exhausted when you find him as John? There's more than just that.
@@shamitsharma785 well, if you watched the other video about the "plausence town" where everyone thinks the snake was a reference to a movie but it actually have a deeper meaning. Then its more possible this have more meaning too
You can actually see how much Nigel's pursuit of Gavin has worn him down. Maybe I just wasn't paying too much attention to his animations, but when I encountered him as Arthur, he seemed a lot more refined and calm, even if he was still getting visibly distressed when shouting Gavin's name As John, though, he seems to be waddling, moving his arms weirdly, and you can clearly see here that his speech is suffering. He's laughing at nothing in particular when he first explains he's looking for Gavin, and almost seems annoyed just talking about how long he's been gone before immediately regaining what composure he has left. Those few years he's been looking for Gavin have absolutely broken him, poor guy.
If you really think about it, you can meet Nigel early in chapter 3, and later in the epilogue, meaning he's been looking for Gavin for 7-8 years, maybe even longer
I am in my first playthrough, and met him in chapter 2. I am still in chapter 2, and so far I’ve seen him in Rhodes, St. Denis, and near the waterfall of Elysian Pool.
@@NateS917 Unfortunately, I haven’t finished the game. I was trying to hundred percent it on my first play through and something happened in my life that got me off from playing for a while. I haven’t played any video games for quite a few months now. I want to get back to it when life settles down a bit for me.
My name is Gavin and when I first heard this in the game, I was stoned and I got genuinely scared like I thought I'd become so immersed that the game was becoming aware of my presence.
First time I saw that guy I talked to him, I actually planned to look out for anyone with an English accent and ask if their name is Gavin. I didn’t think much of it, but I noticed that he was still there years later in the epilogue looking for Gavin and that interested me.
"The mystery was never meant to be as complicated as everyone would like it to be" >Proceeds to tell tale of split personalities, grief and coping mechanisms
First time I seen this guy I was in Rhodes. Just got done giving that doctor his cart back that people stole. The second time I encountered this guy, I was literally inside a cave and heard him screaming for Gavin above me on the surface level. I just sat there thinking, “bro he still didn’t find him??”
Finding Nigel before watching this video: "hehe that funny fella again." Finding him again after watching this video: * silence, pity and depression in the air *
My girl friend got moody yesterday thinkin I dint wanna spend time with her cuz I've spent the last month deep in red dead. Obviously this is wrong and as u kno u jus get lost in the world that is red dead 2
8:20 here is an explanation as to why Gavin disappeared, usually with DID an alter can take over for years or even decades without the other surfacing. Someone could be living as their alter for ages and then suddenly out of the blue their other alter returns.
i feel so sorry for nigel, he was so handsome, he deteriorated looking for gavin who never existed. i was so sad when he said "i want to go home" , this really broke my heart 🥺
You're the only channel that does this for real. Everyone else is click bait. Some idiot talking for 10 minutes just to give zero real information. I like your editing, sound design, and how straight to the point you are! Subcribed. Good day!
Matt Telepenko, I agree usually but I hated the background for 50% of this video because it sounds like my goddamn alarm Edit: I meant more of the just the way the noise sounds not exactly like my alarm lmao
yeah his editing is really entertaining, but i wish he would have someone speak over the text. id like to listen to the video and do other things instead of direct 100% of my attention to read what's on the screen
I think Gavin was one of the sadder/more disturbing parts of the game. Its sobering to think that people probably had just as many mental issues back then and none of the resources to cope with them. How many generations of people grew up with abusive alcoholic parents who really just had PTSD or chronic depression.
Dude, Nigel and Gavin are obviously gay. Some people probably got to know this and killed him, just like in the Brokeback Mountain. No person with an actual dual personality can become financially successful.
If you've ever been abandoned by anyone, even if it's someone you're just accustomed to being around it can be jarring. Especially if that certain someone just chose to no longer be apart of your life. It can drive you insane. This is one of my favorite and saddest parts of the game. The man was denied closure. He's unsure of how to proceed. Does he give up the search, or continue because he thinks if he were missing his friend wouldn't stop until he found him? And it's a reminder that I'll never be as kind as I think I truly am. Shits deep.
For better or for worse I've been on both sides of that. I actually did go manic for a year straight back in 2017 when my best friend cut me off, and we haven't seen each other since 2016. My best friend now has been my close friend for almost 20 years haha
Hands down the best channel regarding Red dead redemption 2 mysteries. Straight to the point, Actually informative content and most importantly doesn’t fool his viewers...Love the content buddy❤️
I wish I could actually help this guy. Like have Arthur say "Listen Nigel, there is no Gavin, you've done it, you've made your father proud. It's time to move on now". And then you see Nigel start putting things together in his head and then he just breaks down crying, realizing he has accomplished his goals. That would be a heart warming moment.
That reminds me of the ending of the Jeremiah Compson mission. Where Arthur burns all of his old belongings in the fire, telling the man to move on and stop dwelling on the past. His gun is old and doesn’t even work anymore probably symbolizing him and how his time has passed. I felt bad for the guy. But still kinda pissed at him after finding out what was in that ledger.
i swear i saw him earlier on in the game, he was well dressed and didn’t seem insane. he genuinely seemed like he was looking for his friend. when playing as john i encountered him again and he looked very scruffy and as if he was on drugs
I thought you met them both early on. I thought we saw Nigel and Gavin together. I always thought Gavin ran off with all the money. This poor guy went crazy from it
For what it's worth. I've never seen this topic covered but years ago during my first 90%+ completion, I was certain Gavin was Nigel's other personality. We are just never lucky enough to run into him when he's "Gavin".
I think there was probably supposed to be more added, but a few of the side stuff in the game was cut content that they never fully completed. I don't even think Nigel was supposed to be in the final game, but they just didn't remove him. You can tell this with the Princess rescue bounty, because her character model is in the game files, her chest can be found at the Fence store, but there is no mission to find her. It was clear that you were supposed to get the poster for her, then find the chest at the Fence, and inquire to the Fence about how they got it, and then keep getting clues that lead you to her. I think the developers just figured it was too much work to remove all of the side stuff, because they would have had to not just remove some scripting events, they would have also had to remove some in world map places, and doing that for tons of things would have been a lot of work, so they left everything as it was. Also the botanist guy that makes you get plants for him, I think that was also supposed to be a bigger side mission, because he knows Arthur's name even though Arthur never tells him his name.
except many people with DID who integrate fully (all alters fuse into one) are very lonely and wish they were still seperate, which explains why he's so desperately looking for Gavin
@@GroovyBabyYeah Actually no, the issue with DID is that alters rarely know of the other's existence, you'd have to tell them that they exist and even then they might not remember when they dissociate then. He may have some other disorder though, like schizophrenia which causes him to believe that Gavin exists as a seperate entity from himself. Although it may not be anything bound in realism at all considering the many instances of supernatural activity in the world of RDR 2.
It‘s amazing how the game can get you to think and ponder so much over a bloke whom you only meet occasionally with a few lines of dialogue about looking for another NPC who you never see. It’s the games magic. That’s why it has become one of my favorite games of all time over games that are better „games“ (MGSV, The Witcher 3, Assassins Creed, GTAV).
@@Caynesss I felt GTAV's mechanics are more solid and less scripted and you can do more creative things. RDR2's biggest flaw are imho the incredibly clunky controls. Also, as cool as going to sleep, making and eating food and growing a beard and crazy hairstyles is, mechanically it's pretty shallow and has little effect on the gameplay. By comparison in Kingdom Come: Deliverancr, which also has many of the same mechanics (having to take a bath, go to sleep ä, etc.) but they are far more essential, as for instance, you won't be able to interact with people if you haven't washed in ages. MGSV on the other hand has far more complex missions that give Ypu a lot of freedom and let you even avoid bosses, if you choose and no two playthrougjs are the same.
With Rockstar’s bad treatment history towards its employees, and crunch culture being a big part of Rockstar, I very much doubt it. They would have just simply fired someone that routinely didn’t show up for work.
Yes please. As fucked up as it is I usually drown him. Mostly because I found out you could drown someone if you tackled them in the water so I tried it out lol.
Gavin was Nigel's imaginary friend after his father passed away... something happens after he came to America, to make him forget that Gavin was imaginary. Perhaps a blow to the head. After that, he has been searching ever since. Its basically ruined his life. But because no one in the new land knows that Gavin was imaginary, no one can help him.
I always thought that when he said he lost Gavin he literally meant he lost his friend Gavin (as in his friend passed away) and I figured maybe he’s just so traumatized by the loss that, even though his friend is gone, he is still looking for him. It’s like Nigel refuses to believe that Gavin is really gone.
That was my initial theory too. There was a Gavin who was a senior designer for RDR2, but left during production. I wondered if one of his colleagues kept saying he missed him and they decided to mock him by making Nigel. However, this video does make a lot more sense. I've never read the letter that deeply before.
Dan Cross it’s obvious you didn’t read the letter that deeply before, Tom writes to Nigel “My two friends - You and Gavin, boys I grew up with” that alone makes this video a waste of time, they’re two separate people
Mr Miyagi the characters in this Game are pretty Realistic and relatable. Nothing wrong with feeling something. Literally thousands of people Fried when Arthur died ect.
I mean a lot of movies are “fake” same as tv shows, books, short stories...I could go on, don’t hate because somebody was immersed in the gameplay enough to get attached to a character, especially because that character was the center of a Year long witch hunt
@@IsaacAutumn maybe, but there's multiple places that rockstar is based ( NYC, Ontario (Rockstar Toronto), Vancouver, Edinburgh (Rockstar North) etc. ) and rdr2 was developed with help of nearly all of them so anything is a possibility.
@@ItWasRevealedToMeInMyDreams good point, the rockstar here in Scotland never seems to be up to much really. To tell the truth i was probably just upset about people always giving credit to england over scottish achievements lol
This was a great explanation! I am a psychologist and love RDR2. What really interested me was your explanation about Nigel having Dissociative Identity Disorder - brilliant! If i could add something to this that makes this explanation even more interesting and possibly a bit eerie - sufferers of DID, if undiagnosed and untreated, often are unaware of their other personalities (or what we call their "alters"), but the alters are often aware of the primary personality. Therefore, if Nigel knows who Gavin is, then i suggest that "Nigel" is the split personality that was created to cope with his past trauma, and Gavin is actually the man's real personality! So by this theory, the man's mental illness has progressed so far, that he seems perpetually and permanently stuck in the alter personally of "Nigel". Spooky stuff! Thanks for the video and for your theory, very interesting and entertaining!
@@BlackTigersoul How do you think is the right way to see it? Please explain your point. I wanna understand you but can't, if you just say it's "fucking rude"
@Milkcrab no offense intended, but i can see that the use of my wording has caused offence. I can see that this is an important topic for you, and that makes sense. I'd love for you to see it in the tone in which my comment was written, and that was to just add some more excitement and mystery to something that we all obviously enjoy in RDR2. Totally get that you disagree with the term i used. But i think we could both agree that this game is so thought-provoking and so realistic. Truce mate - enjoy.
This channel has passed the time in quarantine amazingly, it really fufills my need for mystery and myth, keep it up, you deserve to be one of the big ones!
that's so sad and the most accurate i think. I know people with DID personalities can go dormant for years if not forever. sounds very scary. having someone around all your life then they are just gone. I feel for those with DID
When you meet Nigel as Arthur you ll see him in good condition and looking for Gavin (this is when he recently lost his friend ), he did get rich and was doing well until his friend disappeared , you meet him as John years later and you see his condition worn out and shabby almost as if he is not rich anymore as his imaginary friend who helped him through trauma disappeared , leaving him wandering about looking for someone who does not exist . This makes sense why he would be so dependent on that personality since it was his way of dealing with the world that Rockstar has created and playing that game you d realize its not such a kind one . i put a bullet in his head to put him out of his misery BTW :P ...Playing this game for the 4th time and still love it .
And as Arthur you meet him in Saint Denis (maybe where he lived with his dad) but then he felt after he made his dad proud even after his passing he moved to blackwater
Big Papa Nigel was probably hallucinating. Or had some form of memory loss that made him think he was different. I don’t know I’m taking it too far Edit: I should’ve watched the video first before this
@@rascallygoose4926 it’s possible that his DID involved amnesia because some dissociation involves not remembering when he switches or not recalling things.
I love this theory, it explains so much and is very realistic. The letter is so cryptic, but with your explanation I could see the inner sense of the P.S. You even explain why Gavin isn't here anymore. Congrats. You've probably found Gavin. x)
I am sure he did look in a mirror. The reason he doesnt know is because Gavin isnt another person, but his mind thinks he is. So he cant process this, and simply states that he's been looking for him for so long, he doesnt even know what he looks like anymore, i.e. he forgot. But he didnt forget, he simply lost that personality, so his mind isnt imagining facial features etc. This is why he gives us so few details about Gavin. Perhaps in his mind, Gavin once had a distinct face, and other personality traits, but over time because he lost that personality, these things he made up were lost too. So in a sense, Nigel is missing "his friend" i.e. the personality he created in a time of need, and he misses that, perhaps out of fear that he might need "Gavin" again in some future unforeseen tragedy.
I think if you encounter him pre-timeskip, he doesn't say this line, meaning in the "few years" absence, he's forgotten. My personal theory is that Nigel and Gavin were lovers and had to be secretive about their relationship and at some point had a fight where Gavin left and was killed by one of the MANY MANY possible dangers of the wild west of RDR2 (bandits/serial killers, cannibals, wildlife). Now Nigel lives in a perpetual state of denial, blaming himself for the fight but refusing to acknowledge that nobody "gets lost" for years.
No, in first times you meet him, he does not say that. He only say it in the Epilogue when years have passed and you see he has gone mad after spending so many years looking for Gavin and never finding him.
btw, in Scotland (where R* is both from, and based) a 'Nigel' is slang for a loner... there's lots of Scottish aimed easter eggs in both GTA: V and RDR2...
Nigel doesn't need Gavin to succeed, he needs Gavin to cope with his trauma, that's how DID works, personalities are created to deal with trauma, Nigel just lost a piece of his own consciousness and he can't face reality and cope with trauma by himself
What i was thinking after searching for Gavin was, that he might have died and this fella has just gotten insane. Didnt know there was a letter at this point tho
I'm not the first one to forward this but I'm pretty sure the whole Gavin mystery is a jab at the Rockstar community. By putting in a mystery without an answer and a missing, named character that can't be found they guaranteed that the players would spend years searching in vain. Ultimately it's the same thing that Nigel does. " I'm looking for him, but I don't know who he is. I've wasted my life... I wasted my life looking." If that's not a thinly veiled comment about the obsessed players I don't know what is.
I initially thought that Gavin was that one guy who takes Arthur to the doctor's office in "Saint Denis" after he falls from his horse and starts coughing.
Never fails. I’ll be looting a small house in the middle of nowhere and hear “GAV!! GAV !!! GAVIN!!!” Then I laugh out loud and go outside and say hi. Wish I had a friend like him 😭
I forgot where, but i was fishing in the middle of nowhere and out of nowhere i heard him screaming for gavin. It made me stop fishing and go looking where he was lmao.
I’d hear him in random locations but never could psychically find him. It was freaking me out. I think the last time was in a hotel room in Valentine or something.
I think your theory is plausible, but it's the zebras explanation. Like, "when you hear hoofbeats, look for horses first before you assume it's zebras." There are a LOT of conventional ways for someone to disappear in RDR2, and many of them don't even involve the Van Der Linde gang. There are multiple serial killers, vicious robbing and thrill-killing gangs, the most homicidal wolves since Skyrim, and even a vampire. People get punched out and left for dead in the street, for some idiot to run their wagon over them. It's also easy to get separated from your homie, just look at how much trouble Arthur had finding Lenny in the confines of a single building when they were shitfaced drunk. Both of them had an established home base to return to if they hadn't found each other again, but Nigel and Gavin may not have had that. If one of them drunk-wandered onto a train or something, they could have gone anywhere, and potentially even forgotten which one of the several towns they don't live in that they were in before they blacked out. Maybe Brian Gold said something about Nigel having mental issues, but he could have said any number of other shitty things and gotten his ass kicked for it. People in these comments theorize that Nigel and Gavin were an item, so it's entirely possible the remarks were something homophobic. Again, I'm not saying it couldn't be a mental issue on Nigel's part, just that there are a lot of simpler explanations.
"Bet he's laughing on the other side of his face now," from the letter could be another indication that you're right. Laughing on the other side of his face could be a subtle hint at a split personality, the fact that at comes at the very end of the letter could be another not so subtle hint.
Yes, but the guy laughing on the other side of his face was a totally different guy, who according to the theory being laid out here, was making fun of Nigel/Gavin (if they are the same guy). A guy which presumably got punched by the friend who sent the letter, hence the laughing on the other side of his face, as one side is too sore to laugh. But that's just my understanding.
@@mickmuzzmkmz1628 - Yep I know it was about a different guy, but it could have been a subtle hint about the split personalities of Nigel from the developers. Here was the three clues The Strange Man pointed out; 1. Has a sense of Humour 2. Big Bloke 3. Londoner Cockney Look at one of the sentences The Strange Man pointed out from Nigels letter; I remember when the *HEIGHT* of your ambition was pretending you were a *LONDONER* and seeing if you *FOOLED* those Scotch boys. *FUNNY* thing is. All three of those character traits are contained within that one sentence, although the word height isn't being used literally to describe a persons height, it could have been another subtle clue by the developers to indicate that Nigel and Gavin are the same person. Nigel pretends that he is from London, and the fact that he is messing people around shows that he has a sense of humour. It could also be an in joke from the developers because Nigel has also FOOLED people(the people playing the game) into believing that his split personality Gavin was a real person also.
@@Sean-lv6fx Wow, that's a long reply! You do make some good points. I read some of the other people's comments. Some say, (no, I'm not Jeremy Clarkson, about to announce "The Stig" on BBC Top Gear! Lol😆) that it was discovered in the game files on PC, that Nigel & Gavin are the same person. Other people are talking about a person (also named Gavin) who was in the development team for this game, but left for whatever reason before the game was completed, & his colleagues who remained, put him in the game as a joke. "Anyone seen Gavin?"......"No! He left". Is this what you meant when you said he was real?
@@mickmuzzmkmz1628 - Hi, no I meant that Nigel in the game could have also fooled the people playing the game that Gavin was a separate person. Just as he fooled those, 'Scotch boys,' from the letter that he was someone else fitting Gavin's description.
i agree. i think a weird part abt toms letter is him mentioning that “gavin didn’t mention none of this in his letter.” i think nigel probably regretted killing gavin, and wrote a letter “from gavin” to cover it up so tom wouldn’t know
@@beritb9040 nah, we do not know from when the letter is. The most probable solution, to me, is that both Nigel and Gavin went overseas to USA in order to live the American Dream. But, as millions of other, they didn't quite make it. And while Gavin was kind of honest in his correspondence with Tom, Nigel said that they are rich now. After some time in the gutters Gavin decided that he wants to head back to UK but Nigel, having lied about how they live wouldn't he do it as then he would be known as layer. As a result Gavin is dead. Now, the reason why Gavins dad is not mentioned could be as simple as that he died before they left UK or Gavin did not have a father.
@@anthonybanderas9930 That's always what I thought too, or Gavin has run away from Nigel back to England, tired of his lies and their failure. It seems more plausible than DID (but it's a valable theory too), because Tom mentions the Gavin letters and and that he has known them both since childhood. Nigel has lied to his family and friends, He's very desillusional about his life, his wealth and success, so I think too he's very desillusional about his relationship with Gavin and his "abrupt disappearance".
There is actually some evidence to this, some other RUclipsr found in the game's files the model of Gavin, and when he spawned it, it was Nigel's. So there you go, you are right.
Why model an entire character that no one will ever see, for a character that you [the game maker] knows isn't in the game? Of course the model for "random.unused.player.code"Gavin" is the same as Nigel. Why would it be anything else? Lol, I don't see this as proof. I think Gavin was just Nigel's imaginary friend, then he snapped one day and forgot he was imaginary.
There is a random encounter outside of Strawberry where you have to help and Englishman get back to town, but he’s not big, and he says he was from New York, even though he had a Cockney accent, I thought this was him for a while, but this video is making me second guess myself.

Once he received the letter from his friend he was forced to realize that he had a friend named Gavin, who was actually one of his personas. When he couldn't see or find Gavin, he started to drive himself crazy.
That makes so much sense.. the letter triggering the idea to Nigel of having a good friend named Gavin, instead of Nigel BEING Gavin knowing him through being him, Nigel is now told through the letter that Gavin is his friend, and now he can't think about what he looks like, where he went, etc.. therefore Nigel completely takes over making Gavin dormant, driving Nigel insane in the never ending search for Gavin. I will never not think this every time I replay the story, which is at least once a year lol. Best game ever.

It's even worse with John, because he's clearly even more distraught, and you can hear him just panic yelling for Gavin, and that he's basically been doing it for decades now, just wandering around, day after day, night after night, probably staying in hotels or living rough, and either people know and are feeding him out of generosity, or he's working somewhere and then spending the rest of his days just constantly looking for Gavin, only stopping when he's soo exhausted he passes out. But the one worse than this is the guy at the mini fort that thinks the war is still going, and never remembers you. He clearly got a head wound in the war that basically has him stuck thinking it's the same day over and over.
This is a solid video and you’ve clearly done your research. I’d just like to point out, as somebody with DID I’d like the viewers to know it’s not always something this strange or as what some popular cult movies make it out to be. Most times it’s like a flood of emotion, good or bad. Perhaps certain foods or hobbies no longer interest the person for an indefinite period of time. It’s subtle things that can make changes in the person personality, maybe without them even knowing. If you know somebody with DID, encourage a healthy routine. That’s the best medicine.

I saw a theory that Gaving and Nigel were gay and Gavin either left or died. Nigel couldn't deal with it and had a mental break when he went into denial. So he spends his time searching for Gavin because he can't accept that he's was gone. This could also explain the letter and his mom and that guy saying that Nigel was weird or didn't make sense. If he was gay, they might say the same things about him
8:19 I'm not a psychologist or anything like that, but I am close with two D.I.D. systems (individuals with DID; formerly "multiple personality disorder"). Alters (aka "personalities") can go dormant for unspecified amounts of time for a variety of reasons. One of these systems I know are actually from Britain themselves and moved to North America, and the culture shock caused a few of their alters to go dormant, simply because of a lack of purpose and familiarity with their surroundings. Think about it: how many times have you wished you could just sit out from an experience you weren't looking forward to, maybe a boring meeting or just something that you knew wouldn't involve you much, but you were still obligated to be a part of? Alters within a DID system can literally just "sit it out", retreating into a common or separate space within the psyche to let someone better suited take over. But I should also note, sometimes alters can go dormant for extended periods of time without warning, even if they're vital to that system's daily life. It can be for any or no reason. Alters are "created" or are born for very specific purposes, because the trauma experienced by an individual with DID (usually in early childhood) prevents that child from developing a cohesive and resilient personality, and so to deal with new situations, the brain creates an entirely different person. For example, a child who experiences regular beatings may develop a personality that outwardly shows no distress and physically has a higher pain tolerance to deal with the situation. Maintaining a show of neutrality makes the beatings less severe and importantly, doesn't provoke a more ferocious response from the abuser. Sometimes alters are born out of a profound sense of loneliness; which I would personally suspect is the case with Nigel and Gavin. As we know, loneliness can be acutely painful, and in a person with DID, the brain would likely create someone to care for and be a friend to the sufferer. Gavin was likely the lively personality; meant to comfort Nigel and make him laugh, and just generally be supportive. Also, in the letter it (at least to me) seems to imply that Gavin and Nigel aren't terribly aware of the other. This is another trait of DID, dissociation. This means that whoever is speaking at the moment from within the system may have 0 memory of what anyone else does; for example, Nigel obviously has no idea about Gavin's activities. This will be because the two men are not in contact with each other, either within or outside of the mind. There can be hundreds of alters within a single system, or as few as 2, and each is observably different. Of course, genders are different as well, so while the body may have male sex characteristics, the one inhabiting it at the time may fully identify as female and dress accordingly. That's not always the case; some systems maintain only male alters in a male body, for example. It's a highly complex and (as you can imagine|) highly disruptive mental disorder, but in most if not all cases, telling the sufferer that they have DID is to their advantage. I've heard it described as an overwhelming feeling of love and acceptance, realizing that you're not bad or insane, and that your condition can be improved, and most importantly, you're not alone. Nigel in RDR2 is obviously in distress, but if he was aware he was (presumably) suffering from DID, he would understand that Gavin isn't gone, he is simply dormant, and that Nigel needs to carry on with his own life while Gavin is away. He is clearly grieving, and being told he wasn't abandoned by his best friend I'm sure would ease his distress. The best thing for a system is to establish and maintain good communication, whether that means writing notes for each other in a physical notebook, or talking to each other within the mind, which is something that either can happen naturally or can be improved with therapy. ...at this point I wonder whether I should just make my own video on the subject, but hopefully those browsing the comments section will find this informative. Having DID is as common in the global population as having red hair, and it's an unfortunately highly stigmatized condition. People with DID do not have "killer personalities" and won't turn in to psycho murderers on the drop of a dime; more often than not, they're trying to escape things in the world that scare or threaten them. Be understanding and kind to each other. You truly never know what someone might be going through.
That's a really informative comment. Thank you very much for it. I don't want to abuse your kindness but since you're very familiar with the topic, have you met a person who constantly holds conversations with somebody that isn't physically there? It sounds a lot like DID per your comment, but the split personalities never take over the person. The person just communicates and even seems to receive input from those personalities, completely in a private setting. Other than that, the person seems completely normal and even leads a somewhat normal life despite having Asperger's syndrome and being generally a loner. I hope you have some ideas about this. Thank you in advance.

As John, though, he seems to be waddling, moving his arms weirdly, and you can clearly see here that his speech is suffering.

KanitoKawaii really? That’s sad as fuck then
@@GroovyBabyYeah Actually no, the issue with DID is that alters rarely know of the other's existence, you'd have to tell them that they exist and even then they might not remember when they dissociate then. Although it may not be anything bound in realism at all considering the many instances of supernatural activity in the world of RDR 2.
It‘s amazing how the game can get you to think and ponder so much over a bloke whom you only meet occasionally with a few lines of dialogue about looking for another NPC who you never see. Why is gtav better?
Thanks for the video and for your theory, very interesting and entertaining!
damn.. got some more chills. Thanks for adding your thoughts
This reminds me of the movie Split where the guy is aware of all his personalities and he can switch between each one at will. Very interesting.

I love this theory, it explains so much and is very realistic. The letter is so cryptic, but with your explanation I could see the inner sense of the P.S. You even explain why Gavin isn't here anymore. Congrats. You've probably found Gavin. x)
When Nigel said he doesn't even know what Gavin looks like, that's probably because he never looked in a mirror.
Hmmm

I think your theory is plausible, but it's the zebras explanation. Like, "when you hear hoofbeats, look for horses first before you assume it's zebras."
There are a LOT of conventional ways for someone to disappear in RDR2, and many of them don't even involve the Van Der Linde gang.
@@mickmuzzmkmz1628 that could be it that is the answer for Sure👉
@@mickmuzzmkmz1628 - Yep I know it was about a different guy, but it could have been a subtle hint about the split personalities of Nigel from the developers.
Here was the three clues The Strange Man pointed out;
1. Has a sense of Humour
2. Big Bloke
3. Londoner Cockney
Look at one of the sentences The Strange Man pointed out from Nigels letter;
I remember when the *HEIGHT* of your ambition was pretending you were a *LONDONER* and seeing if you *FOOLED* those Scotch boys.
I always assumed Nigel killed Gavin and he's searching for him to rid himself of his guilt.
RDR2 : Silent Hill 2 edition
i agree. i think a weird part abt toms letter is him mentioning that “gavin didn’t mention none of this in his letter.” i think nigel probably regretted killing gavin, and wrote a letter “from gavin” to cover it up so tom wouldn’t know
@@beritb9040 nah, we do not know from when the letter is.
Same
@@anthonybanderas9930 That's always what I thought too, or Gavin has run away from Nigel back to England, tired of his lies and their failure.

Diego Murillo that was most likely a way to just get easy access to the model as probably more people knew him as Gavin's friend than Nigel

Of course the model for "random.unused.player.code"Gavin" is the same as Nigel. Why would it be anything else? Lol, I don't see this as proof.

Most times it’s like a flood of emotion, good or bad. Perhaps certain foods or hobbies no longer interest the person for an indefinite period of time.
I love the effort put into this, the long comments are always the ones that catch my eye. Thank you for sharing this
That's a really informative comment.
