JT: Cracking price, sadly my quote was £15,000* from octopus, so have just installed our own, but have left the oil boiler in at present. Installed Oct 24 - accident damaged (I suspect octopus reject) Daikin 6kw, run at 45 deg 24x7, its uses 12 Kw / day, for 44kw of heat output (COP~3.5). Switched off temerature compensation, so that we can run the house n heating, on a 20kw battery, almost all at off peak rate. Indeed For October, Total consumption 715.2kWh @ 6.83p/kWh † = £48.83 , where † = Average unit rate charged per kilowatt-hour., £48.83 also includes car at 1000miles / month. *Our house has a heat usage of 20,000Kw / pa, Oil usage for Nov 24 todate is 125 litres. Like yourself, just dailing the optimum, but its looking like a tad over for £100 for all energy in house & running the EV, for Nov. = very happy to a few years ago which was £400+ / month in winter. Keep up the great work on your updates, its very useful ,for myself at least. 👍
sounds good, i saw the effect of weather dependant heating curve today, temp went from 1° C yesterday to 14° C today house is still warm and only used 3kWh all day.
@@JonathanTracey Exactly the same - every day is a school day. I've used 7kwh today todate, but am still suffering at its 21 degs still - also had 7-9am free on IOG.
I’m at the quote stage….computer said no initially as my hot water cylinder is under a staircase and although the guys doing the assessment saw no problems fitting the new cylinder, the computer wasn’t having it. They are coming back out with a senior guy this week, I see no problem, but will find out soon. I was quoted around £4.4K after BUS, 4 bedrooms, 16 radiators (not all being replaced), 10mm micro bore pipe work. Would be interested how that stacks up compared to your home. What did interest me is that heat geek estimated a 5.4kwh heat loss, and we’re quoting a 5kw heat pump, but octopus have calculated an 8.5kw heat loss and want to put in a 9kw unit. As you also did heat geek and octopus, how big a difference did you see between the two. Heat geek are also quoting almost £14K after BUS, so a massive cost difference as well.
I just got a quote from the Octopus website, it was £3,800. However we have a Combi gas boiler system, with only a 13ins wide linen cupboard in the bathroom, hardly large enough for that big cylinder. Plus there is nowhere sensible to site the pump outside. We're and end of terraced barn conversion. Of the three exterior walls, one is not our land outside, another is a single storey lean-to with no loft and no plumbing apart from the odd radiator and the third exterior is our front door and a wall that has a brick built alcove with our meter cupboard and a brick set of herb beds built in. So I can see a heat pump being a lot more costly than the initial quote, if it's actually possible. Our boiler is 14 years old and had its annual service on Friday. Nothing wrong with it but it will be heading towards end of life. A replacement Combi costs about £3,000. We have no solar as a Grade II listed building that's unlikely to be sanctioned.
If anyone wants another idea, my quote was £10870.77 from which I had a discount of £350 - £250 for acting in October (it's not installed yet) and £100 when I gave them a referral code. I have a fully-electric shower which will still work fine when the work is completed but it would seem a shame to not use the heat pump heated water in its place, so I'll look at getting some sort of mixer installed. My system needs planning permission and there are extra costs running to around £300 involved in getting that and a delay. Also I need to do the work to apply, including in my case a front elevation drawing which is a bit of a pain. (Octopus do provide some information to help me make the application.) If you need a new EPC - they will cover that cost, but get your quote first as for some inexplicable reason my quote went up after a new EPC was done! They honoured the original quote though, so it's fine, and an incentive to keep going under this quote. Finally, I have seven radiators; the quote covers any radiator upgrades that may be needed. In my case, all seven need to be upgraded. Hope this helps, and JT - it was great to see a ZX80 and ZX81 in the background; probably the most exciting Christmas I ever had was in 1982 when my present was a ZX81 at the age of around 9.5! I ended up being a software engineer so it had a big impact on my life!

Do you have an idea of life span on the heat pump and how much it would cost to simply replace as there would be no grant available next time. If the average person goes through at least 3 gas boilers or 3 heat pumps in a life time does it make sense long term? Admittedly this would look different for those without solar. Not many talk about lifetime cost, as many will need more than 1.
I have heard everything from 5-30 years. I think that’s based on air conditioners not heat pumps but they are basically the same. Remember 80% of the cost was labour, had 7 people here one day, wages got to be paid.
@ yeah appreciate the huge upfront cost to get the house ready. The question was really about how much would a simple replacement cost and how comparable is it to the boiler, knowing like a boiler it’s not for life and will need replacing at some point. That’s something that no one mentions which I find strange as its lifetime costs people should at least consider. Does it cost the same, twice as much, three times as a boiler? Would be good to know although for most of us it’s a can we have kicked far down the road for now.
Seems you can buy a replacement unit for £3700 www.cityplumbing.co.uk/p/daikin-low-temperature-monobloc-6kw-heat-pump-heating-only-edla06ev3/p/643204?srsltid=AfmBOor9NfYX6fxUXKinEjyEQVULH8HwOJ-erz5tbKc4k-KcznplRZQg
yeah it only really makes sense if your boiler is on its last legs. ours was 27 years old and according to a plumber so old spares are almost impossible to find, so we jumped before it failing on us
Great job. How much was it To install the power meter? Also on a side note I do love your home production. It’s very professional and you will go far with RUclips! 😊
it was done as part of another project so i attributed the cost to that, however its probably 20 minutes for a qualified electrician. thanks for the kind words, have a lot of work to do on the production quality but happy with it for now

You can always put the deposit down, get the survey and a fixed price, then make a decision, if no get your deposit back.
If I was in your case, I would get an ASHP - in my case it was £7500 (excl. grant) quote, but am doing fine without MCS regulations.
Best of luck
It’s not just about the heat pump then you have the outlay of the solar panels
Yes am looking at this in future
best day to do an install was 5 years ago, 2nd best day for an install today 😂
Thank you for all the info.

Hi what was the size of the cylinder and wattage of heat pump. Also how many radiators did you have to replace?
160l cylinder with a 6kw heat pump and 6 radiators replaced
Enquired November 2023.
Fixed online quote, £1100
Surveyed March 2024, installed June 2024.
1960s, 3 bed semi detached with 9 radiator changes.
that’s a great price did you have a new tank and radiators as well for that price?
@@JonathanTracey Absolutely, its an OE quote. Id say about 6 months ago prices were around 30% cheaper than todays prices.
nice assume you also got the bus grant,
I had a quote from octopus several months ago, online quote was almost the same as yours but they wanted a £500 refundable deposit
i had heard that was the old price it’s now 200
what about costs to upgrade radiators?
all included in the price
Cant work out octopus quoting. Quote this month compared to quote this time last year is triple the price!! No idea why. Ive asked them to ellaborate
Even costs of materials can’t triple the price can it?
There's no real logic. Prices look like they're plucked out of the sky

Octopus quoted me £14k. So £6500 after bus 🚌 too steep for me when my boiler is only 5 years old

Octopus remove the gas meter for ftee
yes but we’re keeping gas hob until we renovate the kitchen next year, once that’s done it’s gone
