Well done guys, super informative and a realistic point of view. Hubz and I moved to Spain and built a house during the Pandemic and like you both, we’re heading towards the end of our 4th year. We’ve had many ups and downs here like you would anywhere, but moving country and basically your whole life takes courage and a lot of grit - Rome was not built in a day and it takes a lot of time to find your way. We’ve made mistakes, we’ve learned and as year 5 approaches, we can honestly say we now feel settled and have a sense of this is our home and where we belong. Scotland will always have a little piece of our heart and you never know what the future holds, but given the choice we would never go back and we’re proud of our journey so far 😌
Love this 🥰
@@ScottishCoupleInSpain Thanks guys, kettle is always on in Guardamar for you 🥰
Thank you for posting this. Yes many reasons but I think it's a double standard if anyone says it's a language barrier/problem. You know day one you are moving to Spain. They speak Spanish here. How many complaints do you hear in the UK that migrants don't learn English when coming there. And yes I agree 100% there is a cultural difference that you get so many more benefits from if you just try. Hire a translator if you have a primary Hospital visit, the Dr or Specialist may actually speak English but show some respect to them first and go from there. Listen thank you guys, will sub 😊
My wife and i are in our 60s.
Would never go back.
UK is totally blown.
Health system is first class.
We moved back to the UK from Spain after 2.5 years, our friends did the same thing the best decision thing we ever made. We missed the buzz of life and soon got fed up with visiting the same old places. All the removal lories that bring Brits to Spain don't return empty.
When we bought our villa the bank charged us 1200 euros just for accepting our money (that was in 2002), our friends were charged by the local council 2000 euros because they sold their villa. It gets to hot in the summer and can get very cold in the winter.
The people who bought our villa skipped the country so the bank took it over then another couple bought it and were charged 10,000 euros as the council thought they hadn't paid enough for it. My advice would be to rent a place first then decide if you wish to stay. If you do buy deal direct with the home owner as estate agents can charge the seller whatever they like.
Many pensioners return for care at home it is very expensive here, many older folks retired here when a basic pension covered cost of living with ease but as time goes on savings once safe are now helping with expenses for everyday bills its getting harder as people over 70 are finding it difficult just to pay bills ,health problems for us is the only reason we moved here, not to party and sit by the sea etc just to get medical help and ease our situation as uk nhs really let us down 22 years ago ,here we have respect being old and long term illness is respected but without a carer once one of us dies help at home is very sparce ,or private beyond our pocket ,thats the only reason l worry about being widowed here .😢
I have been inspired by your video to move to Spain. We are looking into it and your video is encouraging. Thank you. Keep up the good work.👍
We were in Santa Pola last Sunday absolutely beautiful. Alas today we’re back in cold ,wet and windy Dublin. Plan to get back out next February. Great video, many thanks.
My husband died after 4 years in Spain, I lived there alone for another 20 years even moving house about 80 miles away. I always said that I would leave Bolnuevo where I had a 3 bed detached with a pool and views of the Med, in a box but I returned to the UK 6 years ago.. Have I any regrets .. absolutely not. There's more to do for solos here. I had English friends who had holiday homes in Spain so quite often I'd nobody to hang out with but I've seen more of Spain than I ever saw in the UK as I went on coach holidays with the Spanish people Fortunately I learned the lingo. I still have an outdoor life here and walk every day. My immediate neighbours are not materialistic one bit and when walking into town everyone will say good morning. I only miss the 2 hours more daylight that Spain has in winter. I certainly don't miss the Summers and the hot weather. I hate the snow here but we don't get that much in Yorkshire. I'm sure if my husband hadn't passed we'd still be in Spain. I certainly saw more of the family when I lived there. I never saw a doctor in Spain in all the years I lived there but my husband did and I agree they were fantastic. However since I returned I've had a few health problems but I have to say the NHS has been fantastic in spite of everything we hear to the contrary. I wish you all the best in the future and hope you both have a long and happy life in your retirement x
My wife and kids got here on their NLV on April 1st 2023, living in the Vega Baja. Kids are now bilingual, it was that and the weather that attracted me to Spain. I still go back and forth for work. Not sure if we'll ever base ourselves in Scotland again.
What region is Santa Paola ? I love watching your videos but I would like to know where you are regionally.
Greetings from Dublin 🍀🇮🇪I moved back home to Ireland in 2021 from 30+ years on Long Island NY. I must say I’m thrilled to be home and I love our temperate climate here compared to New York. My main purpose of being here is to care for my dad who is 90 years old and has vascular dementia. What I like about being back home again is I fit right back in again. I doubt I will ever go back to the USA again to live but definitely for visits because I’ve 2 grown kids there! And like yours, my kids love coming here for holidays! So people come and go for all kinds of reasons and I knew when I lived in America that I would come home again, that I didn’t want to end my days there. Anyway, I love watching your videos, keep up the good work! 👍
Santa Pola is just a little south of Alicante city
Been following you for some time now from Sri Lanka. Planning to relocate to Spain and not sure about where to exactly… you videos give a realistic impression of what to expect… very helpful and much appreciated…
More, more, more of this. Love the smug smiles by the way. 😂😂
We’re only smug when we know it’s been snowing in Scotland 😊😂
Watched this morning from freezing Ayrshire
Santa Pola is lovely, some nice restaurants by the beach and near harbour. Most importantly a lovely sandy beach and you can walk for miles.in summertime the boat goes to the island of Tabarca which is a great day trip. Thanks for showing some me of the best of the area.
Great info guys !
Enjoying the coverage of the reality we are just at retirement age and have discussed the issues would love to move over but in reality more likely to do some longer rentals that would make sense to bring our dogs so anything covering letting and vets would be interesting health cover. Its great to see karen healthy and the 3 of you enjoying your lifestyle and as you said santa pola looks great never thought of it policia presence makes it sound a good safe place 😀👏more please
Santa Pola is good unlike torre you can go a few streets back from the sea front and its still good. Similar to OH costa money is raised from Gran Alacant and spent on Santa Pola. When we first moved to Spain we met people who could not stand the heat in July/ August, I now struggle during those months. Before moving here we spoke to a couple who were aged 50 and asked what about leaving parents back in the uk. Their answer was by not making the move would be like waiting for them to die. A majority of elderly parents don't just not wake up one morning. They go through quite a long period of deterioration before the end. Dementia etc and although i have 2 sisters in the uk one can not wash their hands of the situation. Moving over here was the best thing we did but be prepared for situations that will test your conscience .
Brexit has put a massive spanner in the spokes , I myself don’t want to live full time in Spain as Scotland is great in the months outside winter 🥶 ( which here is 6 months unfortunately 😡) ,,,, but I would like to stay 6 months of the winter there …. But brexit which forced the kick in of the 90 day rules put pay to that 😡
We take on board all your points we've sat on the fence for nearly 4 years now doing our 90 days in and out. Apart from the long drive 4 times a year with our dog for now we have the best of both worlds but we are afraid we might regret someday not moving over full time especially as we bought our property before brexit and could have got residency ....
Moved here 24 years ago and living on a state pension. So many wonderful things to do, free. Never once thought of going back. Disfruta España ❤
Nicely done guys, you enjoy every moment away from the matrix! UK and the West is unraveling for a variety of reasons. You’ve worked for it, done the research, good luck to you 👍🏽❤️🍷
Many people who live in or around Elche have second homes in Santa Pola.
As you said it has a lovely sea front.
It’s also really long going from playa lisa right up towards Arenales.
Good video, very true what you said Karen about culture. Love seeing Ginny again.
I have lived in Spain for ,55 years I have a Spanish family I worked in the Embassy for 40 years
I loved watching this video! We are going back to Santa Pola for a holiday in December and are hoping to move there at the end of next year.
Do you have any tips about the best way to find accomodation, having moved around in the area yourselves?
Thanks!
8:41 lol, that slightly self satisfied look (almost smugness) about the cold and snow back home.
CHEERS TO THE PAIR OF YOU.
Hasta luego.
😂😂😂 mate the pictures we got sent from friends and family did make us laugh.
@ScottishCoupleInSpain they are hardy folks north of the border. Wait for pictures of men in skirts building snowmen.
Love the smirk on Barry face when Karen said WE try to read all the comments. Thanks guys for the vlogs, I'm still watching and thanks Karen if you get to read this😂
@johnharper6309 Kj reads most, I don't have the time to read them. I will try to catch up on a Sunday. We are thinking about doing LIVE Q&As to make it easier for people to ask stuff.
Hi! 😀 thanks for watching! Heheh ~ Karen
To True .. Our Neighbor went back to the Uk después de veinte años ..
Can you make a video about the reality of squatters in and around Torrevieja
You’ve both had health issues. Any chance you could discuss other people experiences of the Spanish NHS. It’s a big issue for those of pensionable age that can move over to Spain and have an S1 to be treated on the Spanish NHS for free. The UK government picks up the bill.
Hi guys, greetings from up north, Guadalajara, but Breaksit is the elephant in the room....my poor uncle had to sell his beloved finca in Coin and return to the UK for treatment after he developed leukemia
Sorry to hear that.
Hi guys nice video, Barry do you get stressed out driving in Spain we do specially in the high season
Hi guys, another good video! I'm thinking of buying a second home in La Mata or Santa Pola? Which one would you recommend? Are property prices similar, or is Santa Pola more expensive?
Thinking of moving over but we have two Irish setters who like to run a lot . Any time I’ve been all dogs seem to be on leashes.. can dogs run on beaches in winter …just discovered your very interesting videos
Can you guys speak Spanish. I seem to get by with a tiny bit, but still trying to improve. love your channel. it's the windy today in blighty 50mph ❤.
Would be interted to know . What are the bills like a month electric, heating, petrol, food shopping etc . Myself and my wife will be relocating hopefully in two years . Thanks
How hard is it to learn Spanish guys I’m 66? Love your videos.❤xx
What age group do you guys fall into? We've been in Spain a little longer than you guys, we live in a small mountain village and love it but as one of us has just reached pension age and now is the time to travel and visit lots of different countries. Not to hibernate. We may like many expats finish up in Spain or some other warm climate. Also,I'm not bothered about materialistic so-called joys of life. I'm a socialist at heart and have learned not to put people into boxes and generalise. The reality is that everyone is different. Anyway, love your channel.
Barry and Karen are in their 30s 😜😜😜😜❤
🤣🤣🤣 we wish. We’re 50 & 52
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I think the fact that you call the UK "home" signifies something.
Yes, that’s “home”. It’s where we were born, it’s where our parents live and families too. We will always call Scotland “home” because that’s where we come from. “Home” is where my mum lives! It’s where we go back to visit, like the song says… “Driving home for Christmas…”. It’s a word that means where you live but also describes your roots, where you come from.
Current home is Spain.
I'd like to know if you're taking Spanish lessons and what visa you're on ?
We took lessons when we first moved to Spain and we moved here pre Brexit so no visa required. We have residency and right to work under the withdrawal agreement.
I've seen more people in Ibrox at 4-30 on match day.
Not recently 😂😂😂
We are thinking about moving to Santa Pola, would you recommend it?
Yes, it gets mega-busy in the summer with all the holidaymakers going to Tabarca Island. But it has a more relaxed feel than other seaside towns. 10 mins from the airport and 20 mins into the City of Alicante.
@ - does it have decent shops etc (other than needing to go into Alicante) nice tidy town or a bit rough around the edges?
When you live in Torrevieja and register with Local Health centre, San Luis for me, When you make appointments and you return say a month later am I going to see the Same GP or different GP who might just look up my health chart, as back home 🏡 in Ireland, I see the same GP, I would like to be able to see the same GP,
I have health issues but under control with Medication, but need regular Check up, would I be able to continue with Spanish health Centre, I am a Pensioner, would I have to pay for attending a GP.
I find cost of living similar to Ireland , but I don't use as much Diesel or Heating Oil
Why not do a video about Pink Lake in Torrevieja around Torreta 3 area and compare it to Pink Lake in La Mata,
Torreta 3 totally neglected, Why I ask myself, as it would benefit that part of Torrevieja, not even a Dustbin to be seen😢😢😢
@PhilHiggins-g6i thought about it, but folk saying am being too negative about Torrevieja now!
@ScottishCoupleInSpain You would only be highlighted the difference between the 2 Pink Lake, s , difference is night and day
Can you convince my wife that life will de better in Spain.
Spend a Sunday watching our videos that should do it. :)
It is all nostalgic.
The United Kingdom is not what it was 20 years wgo.
They are coming home to add more pressure on the United Kingdom sevices.
You should probably think about the 800,000 people from Asia that they let last year only...
Lovely to see a Scottish couple giving honest opinions - I'm 72 and can honesly say the UK under Labour is completely jiggered.
However Spain seems to be going the same way with the Socialist Government just opening the floodgates for uncontrolled illegal immigration!
If you were my kids - I would soo want you to have a happy, healthy life - but the future looks bleak in the west!
At least you have the warmth of the Sun - love your channel and bless you both!
❤
Nonesene! , record numbers of immigration under the last 14 years of Tory Government's. Don't just repeat what you read in the Daily Mail or hear On GB, or Sky news do your own research. The UK is declining due to the erosion of disposable income for the working classes & the reduction in taxation ! .
I'd say the UK is jiggered because of 14 years of neglect of our services not the couple of months Labour have been in.
@@chrysalis4126 I really can't disagree with your opinion - it has been jiggered a long long time sadly - Labour is just the icing on the cake (in a bad way)
Not being funny, racist or xenophobic if anything it's anti-labour party and British government but he UK now only really cares and caters for illegal immigrants, heinous criminals and person non-white and not born in the country. this is fact and not a slur. when returning to the uk after living overseas for a time you have to be aware of these changes and you need to come back with a home and job to go to, or lots of money and you don't need to work. do not rely on the government, local council, job centre to help you..!
