When I was young my Grandfather had a Farmall M that had two tanks on it but only one was still used. He explained to me (I was 10 so he didn't really go into a lot of detail) that back in the War years you couldn't get gas so the tractor was started on gas and when running and warmed up you could switch over to what ever burnable liquid you could find to run on. Kerosene, diesel, whatever was available. After the war years it was converted to just gas since it produced more power on gas. I think one of my cousins still has the old gal.

When I was a boy in late 1950 ' s into 1960 ' s dad's power tractor was a 1950 G John Deere. It had a small tank for gas , the big tank for tractor fuel. My 1954 John Deere 70 has one tank. The casting where the gages are has O G F in the casting no hole. Per my dad tractor fuel was like kerosene , the tractor had more power on gas. If you run it on gas all the time it burned valves.

What you’re seeing is a hot gas manifold, the tractor would have come with a hot fuel oil manifold. The were made to run on power fuel , it was a very little refined fuel . Poor quality, everyone had to make concessions for the war effort.
