    Wonderful tutorial at a great pace! If you are modifying it for the coasters, I made mine slightly bigger by chaining 14 instead of 12 and repeating the bottom section a second time. I also do 6dc in this additional chain instead of 5 😊

      you can also use a much bigger hook if you don’t feel like messing with the pattern too much! i used red heart yarn with a 5.5mm hook and they sized up to coaster size pretty well!

    WRITTEN PATTERN: (slightly reworded to terms im more familiar with, if there are any errors please lmk. I also recommend still watching the video for some of the more complicated parts--sometimes it is easier to show than tell)
    Chain 12
    In 2nd Chain from hook, single crochet 1
    In next ch, HDC1, CH1, and SC into back loop of chain
    In next two chains, make 1SC
    after second SC, Chain 4
    remove hook from chain and insert it into the 4th stitch starting from the top of the leaf. Then attach CH4 to stitch, and chain 1
    In chain space, [2HDC, 3SC]
    Skip 1 chain from foundation, and SC into the next chain. Chain 5
    remove hook from chain and insert it into the 4th stitch from the last set of Chain Space stitches (ChSp St's). Attatch Ch5 to stitch, and chain 1
    In new chain space, [1HDC, 3DC, 1HDC, 3SC]
    skip 1 chain from foundation, and SC into next chain. Chain 6
    remove hook from chain and insert into the 5th st from last set of ChSp St's. Attatch CH6 to stitch, and chain 2.

    In new ChSp, [5DC, 1HDC, 3SC]
    skip 1 chain from foundation, an dSC into next chain. Chain 6
    remove hook from chain and insert it into the 5th stitch from the last set of ChSp St's. Attatch Ch5 to stitch, and chain 1.
    in new ChSp, [1HDC, 5DC, 1HDC, 3SC]
    Sc into last Ch.
    Into opposite side of foundation chain, work 1SC into every Ch until you're back at the top of the leaf (12). Make a slip stitch into the tip of the leaf.
    //Turn your work//
    In 2nd stitch, make 1sc
    In next st, make 1HDC, chain 1, and SC1 into back loop of Ch1
    In next 2 stitches, make 1SC
    After 2nd SC, chain 4
    remove hook from chain and insert it into the 4th stitch starting from the top of the leaf. Then attach CH4 to stitch, and chain 1
    In chain space, [2HDC, 3SC]
    Skip 1 stitch from foundation, and SC into the next st. Chain 5
    remove hook from chain and insert it into the 4th stitch from the last set of Chain Space stitches (ChSp St's). Attatch Ch5 to stitch, and chain 1
    In new chain space, [1HDC, 3DC, 1HDC, 3SC]
    skip 2 stitches from foundation, and SC into next st. Chain 6
    remove hook from chain and insert into the 5th st from last set of ChSp St's. Attatch CH6 to stitch, and chain 2.

    In new ChSp, [5DC, 1HDC, 3SC]
    skip 1 st from foundation, and SC into next st. Chain 6
    remove hook from chain and insert it into the 5th stitch from the last set of ChSp St's. Attatch Ch5 to stitch, and chain 1.
    in new ChSp, [1HDC, 5DC, 1HDC, 3SC]
    Attatch to last ST from ChSp St's from opposite side of leaf with a SC and finish off
    notes:
    at least when working on a larger scale (if you came from tiktok, iykyk), i found that working the foundation chain of 12 with a hook a full size smaller reduces the amount of unintentional holes in the design. (so if you're working everything else with a 5.5mm hook, doing the chain with a 4.5 makes the design look a little neater
    additionally, i found that when doing the mid-ridge of 12sc up the side of the leaf when you're halfway through, it makes for a good opportunity to hide the extra bit of yarn from your slip knot. I just crocheted the sc around it, and if it ended up being a little longer than the length of the leaf, i would pull it through the stitches a bit like a drawstring, trim as much as needed from the leftover yarn, and then pull the design back to full length. it should hide the rest of the woven in yarn within the stitches.

    This is my interpretation of the video instructions.
    Basic concepts
    1) Foundation chain # should be double the number of "leaf" layers
    2) Creating a leaf with a chain loop length getting longer
    3) Plumping the leaf by using (ch#-1)x2 (i.e. if your loop chain is 6, you want about 10 stitches on the loop, or as many as would fit comfortably!)
    4) Plump with the tip of the leaf loop starting starting with longer stitches (dc or hdc) and going smaller towards the midrib.
    5) Skipping stitches on the midrib creates variation in spacing of the "leaf" loops
    6) Making the two sides asymmetrical makes it look more organic!
    Monstera Leaf Written Instructions:
    Slip knot, ch12, turn
    Leaf1: sc, hdc, sc,
    Leaf2: sc ch4, remove hook and rehook at 4th stitch from the top and slst the previous ch4 on; (ch1 2hdc 3sc) around the formed loop towards foundation chain; skip a stitch on the foundation chain
    Leaf3: sc ch5; rehook 3rd st of Leaf2; (ch1 1hdc 3dc 1hdc 3sc); skip
    Leaf4: sc ch6; rehook 5th st of Leaf3; (ch2 5dc 1hdc 3sc); skip
    Leaf5: sc ch 6; rehook 5th st of Leaf4; (ch1 1hdc 5dc 1hdc 3sc); sc to the end of the chain;
    Midrib: Turn and sc x12 (following the foundation chain); slst (aka tip); turn (starting other half)
    Leaf1: sc, hdc ch1 picot (aka turn on ch and add a sc), sc, sc
    Leaf2: sc ch4, rehook to 4th st, (ch1 2hdc 3sc), skip
    Leaf3: sc ch5, rehook to 3rd st of previous leaf, (ch1 1hdc 3dc 1hdc 3sc), skip, skip,
    Leaf4: sc ch6, rehook to 4th st of previous leaf, (ch2 5dc 1hdc 3sc), skip
    Leaf5: sc ch6, rehook to 5th st of previous leaf, (ch11hdc 5dc 1hdc 3sc), slst to finish at the end

    1: 4 chain, attach 4 loop, 2hdc and 3sc
    2: 5 chain, attach 3 loop, 1 hdc and 3dc and 1hdc and 3 sc
    3: 6 chain, attach 5 loop, 5dc and 1hdc an 3sc
    4: 6 chain, attach 5 loop, 1hdc and 5dc and 1 hdc and 3sc
    That’s it, I hope this helps people a bit

    ch 4
    remove hook, attach ch to 4th loop on previous set
    ch 1
    on ch4: hdc 2, sc 1
    on original ch: skip one loop, sc into next loop (6th)
    ch 5
    remove hook, attach ch to 3rd loop on previous set
    ch 1
    on ch5: hdc 1, dc 3, hdc 1, sc 3
    on original ch: skip one loop, sc into next loop (8th)
    ch 6
    remove hook, attach ch to 5th loop on previous set
    ch 2
    on ch6: dc 5, hdc 1, sc 3
    on original ch: skip 1 loop, sc into next loop
    ch 6
    remove hook, attach ch to 5th loop on previous set
    ch 1
    on ch6: hdc 1, dc 5, hdc 1, sc 3*
    on original ch: attach with sc
    "midrib" original chain by sc 12 into it, should go up length of leaf to where you started
    sl st into very tip of the leaf
    turn
    repeat from * to * using midrib sc set instead of original ch
    attach with sl st into midrib
    tie off

    The first time I used your pattern I just use scraps second time I used your pattern. I dyed wool in a variegated pattern. This time I am using a lime, green neon, and am chaining a very long necklace that reaches to my belly button instead of training 14 to start the leaf I am using 20 so it will have a stem I make the leaves and come back alone with chain another 20 stitches to start the second one. This gives them closeness, but not overlapping Leaves. Finish the first leaf on this necklace. Can’t wait to see how this turns out. Thank you for sharing.

    I made cute earrings! But they were floppy. I used modpodge on the top of the leafs and the midridge. And it worked but it changed the color. Where I didn’t put mod podge, it’s a bright green. Where the mod podge is it’s dark green, but that’s totally ok because leaves have different shades sometimes and it looked cute when I thought of it like that.

      this is happening to me too. i even unraveled the second side to try to fix it but i actually think thats how the pattern is. if you go to the end of the video and look closely at the creators monstera leaves they are the same (i think lol) but because of the type of yarn they used it is far harder to tell. im using a cotton yarn so i think thats why you can tell that the stitches are sort of flipped and the pearled side is up on half of the leaf on either side

    I’m confused - if you start with a SC in the second chain from the hook, then you are crocheting (and skipping) into 11 chains. Why do you then SC 12? You end up with an extra SC that way, SO Couldn’t you SC 11 and then slip stitch into the tip of the leaf?

      I'm thinking either the creator mistyped 14 as 12..maybe, I'm not sure. But I'm seeing everyone crochet 14 instead of 12 and it coming out good with no complaints. Just not sure if it would have 12 midrib stitches or 14 midrib stitches because you're skipping a loop each time anyways.

    • @randiandrus7566
      @randiandrus7566 Год назад

      @@dk6ybI actually tried that too and hated how pointy the tip of the leaf was. I'm thinking the creator mistyped 14 as 12, because you're skipping 1 stitch hole, and attaching it to the next one. Basically making it smaller.

  • @cenelson6484

    Hello, I have a question. When attaching the chains to make the holes in the leaf, do you count the chain 1 or chain 2 at the beginning ? Idk if that makes sense

    • @elieska
      @elieska Год назад

      It differs, depending on the height of the stitch that follows it. (a DC is higher than a HDC so might need a higher beginning stitch)

  • @Tacosession

    Thank you for this. I'm confused on how to do the leaves though- for example when there's 5 chains you put "on the 5 chains stitch: 1 hdc, 3 dc, 1 hdc, and 3 sc". How do you do 8 stitches (those added up) into only 5 stitches? it's hard to tell from the video because it's a little grainy. I run out of stitches to add those last 3 sc's into...

    • @l2ara
      @l2ara Год назад +2

      you don’t do the stitches in the 5 chains themselves but in the space that’s between the 5 chains and the ‘body’ of the leaf, i hope it makes sense :)

    • @wikazietek8091
      @wikazietek8091 Год назад +1

      I think they are referring to the chain space, so instead of crocheting into the stitches themselves you crochet into the chain space (the hole that's been created) if that makes sense

    • @monicabilagot1378
      @monicabilagot1378 Год назад

      you’re not meant to be crocheting into each chain stitch, consider the whole chain as a stich. you would put your crochet hook into the big “hole” that the attached chain creates (hope that makes sense!) then pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook - that’s for the sc. for the hdc you would yarn over before putting the hook under the chain, yarn over and pull through the 3 loops on the hook. 😊

    • @Bella13cooper
      @Bella13cooper Год назад +1

      Work into the bigger hole made by the chain not the five stitches. Basically crocheting around the stitches not into them. Wrapping with dhc, dc, and those sc around the chain spaces.

    • @jessburr7264
      @jessburr7264 Год назад

      You don’t work into the chain 5 stitches made, you work into the space that the chain 5 loop creates.
      So imagine you made a bracelet just of chains, to add onto it, don’t hdc/dc/sc into the chains, do all of that into the space your wrist would go. Does that makes sense?

    how do you attach the earrings in the end?

    • @Bella13cooper
      @Bella13cooper Год назад +2

      Get small jumps rings and use either your fingers or pliers to pull apart and slip it into at least two loops in the back (could be the top half of a stitch, like the top sc in the middle). Make sure the jump ring is parallel to your project. Then while it’s open attach an earring backing of your choice (make sure it’s facing the right way) and close with pliers, or fingers. Hope this helps!

    Hiya, sorry I'm stuck and was wondering if you could maybe please help? Am I skipping a chain at start please? As I'm ending up with a spare chain at the end. Also when you chain and slip stitch onto the leaves and count stitches you need to skip, are you including the chain one please?

    • @adriennek2050
      @adriennek2050 Год назад

      Hey, I did not have an extra chain at the end, you can try to redo it or what you can do is just skip the chain before it and go directly into the last one since it's at the end. Also if your taking about the leaves or the small sections on either side, the chain one does not count. You have to do it plus whatever number of chains that part calls for. Hope that helped!

      The first single crochet we do (after we have done 12 chains) is in the 2nd loop from the hoop. He didn't say it in the video but from watching, it was definitely the 2nd. Hope this helps :)

    It's very hard to follow. After third part of leaves there is no chain left, so I dont know how you continue if every time you skip one chain.

      you must be making some sort of mistake, as if you start with the 12 chains as in the video you'll have the perfect amount. check that you aren't skipping an extra chain when inserting your hook. perhaps try using stitch markers to note which stitch you last worked into.

    • @emilycone9167

      I just followed this pattern and it was surprisingly easy. I have a habit of losing stitches as I go, but didn’t have that issue with this. You must be losing stitches somewhere if you don’t have any chains left to finish the leaf.

    • @froglegz55
      @froglegz55 Год назад

      You don’t crochet in the actual loops for those stitches, you crochet into the hole it creates (around the chain the chain as if it were a magic circle)

      I had to rewatch the video a few times .
      I hope this makes sense..
      When you lay the half completed leaf down, and kind of stretch the flat(beginning chain side) out a bit, you can see spaces of varying sizes just off of the original chain.
      I put the sc in those spaces for the midrib part. Some spaces will fit 3-4 sc. some will only fit 1-2.
      As long as you have 12 sc down the length of the flat side of the leaf, I think the rest will work out fine.

    • @taymock2613

      idk if this will help you but on mine there are huge empty spaces under the initial middle chain. i did 12 sc in those

    • @Bella13cooper
      @Bella13cooper Год назад +2

      There should be holes on the opposite side you worked on. Unfortunately they are hard to see but you should see holes on the other side and sc in each one of those. Some might look different because you skipped over them (a bit smaller) but work your way into it and sc. Should be able to count 12 holes. Sorry if this doesn’t make any sense!

    • @lizkeil8981
      @lizkeil8981 Год назад

      For me. The midrib is just sc in the chains that were leftover from the starting chain. This helps get back to the tip of the leave to be able to repeat the pattern.
