Pandemic funerals: inside a mortuary during coronavirus

  • The funeral industry has had to adapt to new regulations around death care during the pandemic at the same time as dealing with an increase in work. Poppy’s Funerals in south London is one provider that believes that public health concerns should not impact upon its ability to carry out its role with humanity and respect. The Guardian spent the day inside its mortuary to see how the firm and its staff have adapted to the new challenges they face. With thanks to Jeanne Rathbone and family

I will be attending my dad's funeral tomorrow and only five can be there to send him off.
This funeral looked lovely though, and done very respectfully and naturally. RIP to all those who have passed during this difficult time.

I think embalming and caskets should be banned for various reasons but mainly completely unnecessary and costly.
If the body is wrapped in a shroud, covered with flowers petals and buried in a shallow grave within two days, which helps with rapid decomposition , it is much more natural and respectful.

My steps felt like led walking up the stairs, I kept flinching at everything, my legs felt completely numb once we got to the room, like they were going to collapse from under me. Standing at the door being unable to walk into the room. Then when I finally made it to his body I couldn't bring myself to touch him. I didn't want to remember his cold touch when my last memory was of his warm hug. I had to be strong for my mom and tbh I was still in so much shock. @@Moonbutton61 Look at the numbers. Assuming you're healthy otherwise, it is highly unlikely you will even catch this disease. If you do, it is even less likely you'll have major complications. And if you do, it is even less likely you'll die from it.
You are very literally more at risk from driving or breathing in polluted air than you are of Covid.
The OP is correct - just hug each other. First, they are likely family members and have already been around each other. Second, it's a funeral of someone they loved and continue to love. At some point, the need to be human trumps the ridiculously low risk of contracting this disease.
I've been working the entire time this has gone on, and I'm a funeral director / embalmer. I have taken no extra precautions other than what I usually do - sometimes less so because the personal protective gear was simply not available since the general public got scared and bought all of it so we couldn't. The numbers of serious problems / deaths for those who remained working, like me, has been and remains very very low. This is likely because we are exposed to all kinds of pathogens on a normal daily basis and our immune systems just simply work.

im NOT saying thiat virus isnt real, but i am saying i dont know anyone whos been sick or even know someone who knows of someone who was sick.
the other day i took my daughter to dr. appointment because she had a cold and they kept testing fir covid-19 for some reason like " well thats the thing, you can't tell the difference between the virus and a cold"...
okay? so if that really is the case... why are we worried again? about cold symptoms.... seriously?
and i dont care what anyone says, where i live which is a populated area of a high population state, Is NOT an epidemic... they say it is but i see no evidence of it.
also not a few weeks ago i went to my neighbor and friends funeral... it was packed with friends and family... i mean packed... we all had to wear masks... i dont like it but i do it for people with week immune systems .
    anyway.... whatever.
also i know more than one person who has gotten seriously ill from their second covid-19 shot.
everything i said here is a fact, not my opinion.
    believe it or don't

Very professional and caring service from Poppy's and very sympathetic footage. I didn't hear an explanation as to why the previous funeral had between 40 and 50 mourners yet theirs was only allowed 10. Having experienced bereavements in my own lifetime, I can see how covid has impacted the industry and the bereaved. Not appropriate to express opinion here but my sympathies go out to those affected by it.

That’s a cardboard box? They are meant to be buried in that? In the US, we cremate in boxes like that and bury in wooden or metal coffins, among other kinds of resting boxes, if you will. That’s different from what I’ve known. In the end all that matters is they are resting peaceful and the family is happy and content.. I enjoyed watching this. The time we are in now is quite worry some. Thank you.. Peace, Health and love to all.

Shannon Bliayang it is what the deceased person has requested before they die! To be buried in a cardboard coffin!
Some people don’t think it is necessary or they don’t want to spend a lot of money on their funeral!

@III-GabeN-III who's to say that wouldn't have happened had there been no restrictions on people's lives? If everything had carried on as normal the death toll would be much higher and hospitals wouldn't be able to treat non covid patients. Those deaths because non covid patients can't be seen would have likely happened either way but people like you are just using it as a way to say the restrictions and lockdowns aren't right

I completely agree. The rules would make more sense if they said: people must stand/sit in household bubbles at funerals. Each bubble must remain 2 metres apart and everyone is to wear masks or visors at the very least. A funeral like the one featured, the burial ground is hardly full of people.
