  • No doubt you have already heard about the crime and decay, but that isn't what this video is about. We actually love Detroit. Detroit Michigan is unlike any city we have ever been to. Yes, there were burnt-out homes and boarded-up buildings but there were also many architectural wonders and iconic buildings.
Detroit is a city that is undergoing a lot of change and renewal. In recent years, the city has attracted a lot of creative people who are working to revitalize neighborhoods and build a new, vibrant future for the city.
In this video, we show you 10 examples of how DETROIT is heading in the right direction.
Thanks to the following RUclipsrs for inspiring us to visit and get to know more about Detroit Michigan.

Moved to Detroit in 2019 from San Diego and it was the best decision of my life. An amazing city with truly phenomenal people and filled with opportunity. Detroit is the city of opportunity and having value and say in your community. I've never felt that way living in any other major city in the US. Every year the city looks completely different with blight being removed and other buildings being renovated/constructed. Everytime I venture to another part of the city some new improvements are going on and people are proud to call this place home. Who are we to live in a community and not try to make it better? I encourage everyone to come visit the city, or move here yourself and be part of a movement bigger than yourself!

Thank you for showcasing some positives about Detroit, because most people outside of the metro area have many misconceptions. However, don't get your hopes up about the QLine's "grand plans" for expansion. They told us the same thing about the People Mover back in the 1980s, but it still just traverses a relatively small loop of streets downtown.

    • @ShouldWeLiveHere

    • @davidlegg6601
      @davidlegg6601 Год назад

There is a long history there. The People Mover was conceived as one part of a larger rail system, and was funded under the Gerald Ford administration. It was handled largely through SEMTA, the Southeast Michigan Transist Authority, which has since morphed into SMART, which basically now runs a suburban bus system. It was NOT a city project. The original project was conceived as a final downtown loop at the end of heavy rail transit from the northern suburbs. At that time, there was active rail service from Pontiac (a suburban city 30 miles north of downtorn Detroit) that terminated along the river on the current site of the Renaissance Center (RenCen). Phase 1 was building the downtown PM loop using cutting edge technology like automated driverless trains and pre-tensioned concrete guideways. Very modern tech for those times. The early projects that used the pre-tensioned concrete design had some problems that had to be worked out, but they eventually were fixed on several projects across the US, including this one. Because of the delays, problems, and costs, it took a long time to finish. Meanwhile, the funding for the rest of the rail system just disappeared. Gone. Mystery. The PM had not opened yet, and SEMTA was ready to walk away from the whole project. Coleman Young, the mayor at that time, raised a fight. His position was that no one was going to shut down the project, leaving an unused, half-finished concrete rail system looping through downtown Detroit. After lots of fighting and negotiation, the PM was turned over to the city. It is now operated by a public authority, separate from SMART or DDoT (Detroit Dept of Transportation). So, we now have a downtown circulator that is a stand-alone system that doesn't connect to any feeder system, unlike the original plan. I can tell you, he system works well. I have been on the train when I've been the only person in the car, and I've been on the train when the cars are so packed you can hardly move. When it opened, it was a marvel, and people from all across the metro area tried it out. I can't tell you how many people talked during their rides about how great it was, and asked, "Why doesn't this extend to Tiger Stadium" (the old Detroit Tigers home in Corktown), or "Why doesn't this go to Birmingham," or "Why doesn't this go to the airport?" For many years the PM was one of the top 10 rail systems in the US in terms of ridership. Just think of what the ridership would be today if the rail system that was originally planned had actually been built.

As someone who grew up across from Detroit, I have always found it exciting, however I don't have to live there. I know people of Detroit have to deal with higher issues of crime but for the most part people just want to carry on improving their life and when the city hit bottom/bankruptcy some saw a way up even if it took a few years to get their new life. I know I can look at all the exciting parts of Detroit knowing Windsor has helped a little here and there just after the bankruptcy but it is the drive of Detroiters that will improve the city the most.
I often feel like any Detroit resident who thinks they are stuck should visit Windsor for a better view of how amazing their city looks and is to those who cross daily to work, shop or take in the food and entertainment that is offered.
It will never be perfect but no community ever is. There is a lot to do to make it safer and I feel they have a long way to go but some areas may be improving.

I also think cities close to borders should make great use of the potential the have as a gateway city. In my experience a lot of birder towns are rather neglected by the government even tho they should be the seen as the entrance and exit point of a country. Moreover especially in Europe where not border controls happen within the schengen area border cities should work more together on a transnational level than they do atm. Overall imo there is great potential for most border towns in this world. It's basically the physical manifestation of the intercultural, intereconomic and international connection of a county.

I love Detroit. We’ve been living downtown for 16 years and it’s just getting better and better, there’s just so much to do, the place is so diverse and accepting of everyone, extremely edgy which we absolutely love and great minds and imagination are coming out everywhere, being right next-door to Canada is fun too. You’re opening video shots of the Dequindre cut is like two blocks away from where we live. it’s really an enjoyable place overall, of course there’s some places to stay away from that’s for sure, but we do. It’s an enormous area geographically. The people are wonderful by the way, and overall very friendly, the restaurant and cultural scene is really extremely good and broad minded. The suburbs are extremely nice to in certain areas and there’s just so much water and fresh lakes all over the place within easy driving distances. The cost-of-living reasonable.

It also should be mentioned, as was mentioned about people moving to the suburbs, that metro Detroit has over 4 1/2 million people, it’s a large area in total, the fact that the city has shrunk was a result of a very large portion basically just moving over the 8 mile line to various burbs. While many of the blown out neighborhoods remain that way, and those inhabitants in large moves far away, the downtown and midtown areas have actually experienced a material increase in population in the last five years. The area metropolitan wise is extremely viable still.

Thanks for this, it was great. Lifelong resident of the area, and a Detroiter for 25 years now. I'd like to offer one clarification; as the chart you used show,s the riots did not lead the flight from the City, they were partially the result of it. White people began leaving Detroit, which was very crowded at the time, in the Mid-50s when the FREEWAYS were being built, making it easier to live in the suburbs and work in the city. White people were more likely to be able to move and they did, so the black population started becoming a majority. However, the power structure remained almost exclusively white which led to tensions, and contributed to the riots in the late 60s. I encourage people to visit Detroit and see it; from Hitsville USA where the Motown sound was born, to the The Charles H Wright Museum of African American history and the Detroit Institute of Arts which boasts the 5th largest public art collection in America, the city offers a lot and is relatively inexpensive compared to other large cities. So plan a trip NORTH of Canada (a favorite geographical quirk of the area and check Detroit out!

I've lived in Metro Detroit most of my life. It was headed in the right direction up until Covid. Not now.
In July 2023 the City Of Detroit will have to start paying roughly $200 million annually to retirees. Apart of the city's 2013 bankruptcy the judge gave the city a decade off from making those payments. Decades up.
City has a fund with four years worth of payments. Then it can't make them.
Add in the millions of annual city income tax revenue Detroit could not collect from people who did work in the city but then worked from home in 2020 to today. Companies are desperately trying to get workers back downtown as they made promises to the city.
On top of that. Ford, GM, and Stellantis waited too long to get into the electric car game and are playing the biggest game of catchup to Tesla. 90k people work for Ford, GM, and Stellantis in Metro Detroit. Another 200k work for parts suppliers. Most of which make parts for gas powered cars.
Michigan is the #6 most moved out state in the USA according to the moving companies.
The evidence I'm seeing along with my 40 years of living here suggest things are going to get much worse before they get better.

Lots of black Americans moved to Detroit in the 50s and 60s because they could make a great living at the automobile factories. It seems that the car companies didn't mind scaling back production at those factories in the 70s and 80s since mainly you-know-who would be negatively impacted. If there was a "different' more "mainstream" demographic working in those factories, the Big 3 would have made much more effort toward keeping those factories thriving so the workers could maintain their livelihoods and standard of living.

I grew up near 9 Mile & Woodward (Ferndale) and loved seeing "the city" as a kid every time I went down there. Taking a bus down John R from 8 Mile to 6 Mile (1990's) opened my eyes to what the bad parts of the city really looked like. A war zone. Fortunate enough to have parents who told me the truth of it, which was racism. The subprime foreclosure crisis, starting in 2006, and the aftermath of the 2008 crisis, along with the damage Kwame did, put the city on the path to bankruptcy. I could have bought a 5 bed, 3 bath brick house right off Woodward Ave, for $20k, in 2006, but it needed $100k in work. Banks don't do that! Sometime after 2016 I saw that same house listed for $250k. I moved to Grand Rapids with my now wife in 2009. Now in Lansing area. Sold 2 homes in GR, both FHA approved. 1900 Linden Ave and 1842 Linden. Eastern & Burton. Some of the "transitional" neighborhoods you didn't feature in your (admittedly good) GR video. I wish I could have bought into Detroit at some point before 2020, but I could have wrecked myself in many ways if I had bought back in 2006, even 2010. I'd love to grab a brew one day. but if you're a transplant looking for a fresh start in a new city, i probably wouldn't even put detroit in the top 30. to start a life there, you're looking at emptying your wallet for ridiculous auto insurance rates, insane property taxes or rents approaching more than 2k/month, plus a nifty city tax...in exchange for one of the country's highest crime rates, subpar walkability, relatively low diversity, and not nearly as much to do compared to your other major cities. and i think i recall a study from redfin showing detroit having like the 7th largest population outflow numbers in the country.

With how walkable it looks like Detroit is trying to become, perhaps a bad idea to own a car in the first place

primarily there should be new jobs for local people and if companies can't find suitable specialists? Train them! I'm sure that a lot of Detroit inhabitants without work would welcome that. In all honesty, the kids playing at the playground is the only truly convincing factor of progress and change.

Thing is it’s not a 24 hr city like Chicago and NY- yet- and has along way to go for supportive businesses around living areas AND the rent prices are like NY and Chicago already since developers are coming in and swooping up land and getting deals from government. All good, but need to keep it low if you want to fill up the city with a lot of people who will pay taxes. That’s the biggest problem. High taxes because no people living in there yet. In due time.

Actually, Chicago is far closer in many ways to Detroit than it is to NYC. Chicago continues to lose population, having lost nearly one million since its all time high in 1950 census. By contrast, Brooklyn alone has about 200,000 more residents than the entire city of Chicago. Detroit is on a moving river, not on a lake. Detroit is situated on an international border, spanned by real bridges and two tunnels (the freight tunnel constructed between 1906 -1910). Detroit's biggest problems are probably behind it, while
Chicago's worst times are more likely just around the corner.

No one could have visited Detroit 20 years ago, and then visited again today and not come away massively impressed on where the city has come. 20 years ago, the city was mostly empty buildings, dirt (yes literal dirt) parking lots for sports games and there wasn't a single shop to visit.

Elon Musk's made much worse mistakes since, but when he moved Tesla HQ to Austin I really thought he should've taken it to Detroit instead. It's the traditional center of the auto industry, where the talent pool, suppliers and consultants are all based out of.

The revitalization and comeback story began around 2012 but still a long way to go regarding Safety and the Schools.
What I don't understand is why the residents keep voting for folks who won't fix the schools and also refuse to lock up the savages who commit the crime. It's a shame. The City could be so much better. !
