Design and production of a Formula SAE exhaust system

  • The header-collector design is of "4 into 1"-type.
    The header is tuned with slightly unequal length runners. Material used is stainless steel 304, with a wall thickness of 1.3-1.5 mm.
    The collector is a 4 into 1 "venturi merge"-type collector. Material used is Inconel 718, with a wall thickness of only 0.6 mm! This collector was 3D-printed with high precision.
    The first muffler used was an all absorptive one, with three passages back and forth. This was unfortunately not capable of keeping the noise levels under the allowed limit. The second muffler setup, along with the black Yamaha FZ muffler, was a combined reflective/chambered and adsorptive muffler. With a small adsorptive straight-through muffler in series, the requirement for noise levels were easily met.
    This exhaust system was used for the 2019 Formula Student race car of Linköping University (LiU). The engine is a Honda CBR600RR.

      Oh, that's nice! I still have it, but haven't had the time or opportunity to make any new videos. Also, I want to make sure that any new footage I make adds something new in addition to my previous videos. I have some plans though, so will be making new videos sooner or later :)

    I have a problem. It's not really a problem but it is something that can't go out of my head.
    Listen, I have a w220 s400 cdi and I love this car. I saw your e420 cdi and that sound is very great and I really watch daily the sound videos of your e420.
    I thinking about to do straight pipe to my s400 too, but I don't know how the result will be. Do you think it is a good idea? The s400 have no dpf stock but it have oxidation catalyst. I know that many people and maybe you will say how can you do that with a S class but it is my car and my decision ;)

      Hey! Are you kidding me? I definitely think you should straight pipe your S400 CDI, that engine sounds amazing with straight pipe exhaust! And it will still be refined.
