    I’m an accounting major at the university of Cincinnati and in the SAE team here and I can attest to this, it’s a wonderful experience and you learn a LOT. Even as someone that’s not engineeringly inclined, I learned a lot and still do everyday. 10/10 experience!

    We did electrathon at my high school, and to be honest, it was pretty fun. Of course it's a very different end goal as with electrathon you're looking to go the furthest, not necessarily the fastest. It's still awesome designing something from scratch and watching it come to life. These types of programs make people use their creativity and think outside of the box. Plus the mechanical comprehension you gain from it is invaluable.

      We tried to do electrathon and managed to get two cars. One “budget beater” that was donated to us and one kit that was $5000. Only problem was that barber motor speedway who was hosting decided that they weren't hosting anymore. So now our school is stuck with two useless cars and an engineering teacher who started this year and has literally no fucking clue what she is doing.

      I was responsible for communication with sponsors, bit of research and social stuff. Never had opportunity to drive it but I sit inside few times.
      The trickiest part was… to develop a seat! Rules forbed to use any aftermarket seat. And we had no clue how to make comfy and light one. And mold of driver body was a horrible idea. We spent like 100 hour for it and 8th or 9th attempt was the one. This sit was used in 3 bolids across 7 years of competition because noone has will to go through this process again 😅

    Am now apart of a Formula Student team. Last year when I decided not to join I think everyone was being forced to go full electric or something. Which was a horrible idea as safety concerned meant everyone going back to combustion engines. Lol. Worth a shot ig, but the fire risk from the electronics was too high. They were a lot faster in acceleration though as one could expect.

    • @apexkillah8632
      @apexkillah8632 2 года назад +3

      The safety risk is there, just like any high voltage electric system, but I would hope no one is being forced. FSAE in the states is just following the trends from Europe, but the performance from electric is pretty fun. Great experience if your uni takes it seriously. Unfortunately the one I went to doesn't really care and your budget and options are very limited. Yes we get to build a half decent car but get almost no testing time because a couple hundred quid is too much effort for the uni... That said we still do well, just wish it was more.

    I've sat in one built using aluminium sheet / aluminium honeycomb composite monocoque. Very impressive thing. I think about them as gokarts with aero, they are way to small to call them cars.

    I wouldn't really call it a mini formula 1. Its more of a mini formula 3 or a race cart.
    Still damn impressive but mini formula 1 is a bit much.

      they're a little faster on average, about superkart level. Some FSAE cars are golf carts, others are absolute monsters, so it's hard to answer.

    Interesting.. here in Europe we have formula student too but my uni only competes in the electric category.. I'm not trying to be rude but it's crazy how slow these combustion cars are.. they probably have a different set of rules? Our electric cars go 0-100km/h in less than 2.5s and the team in Stuttgart set a world record a few months ago with a time of about 1.5s (with prepped car and prepped track)

    • @anonymousperson7861
      @anonymousperson7861 2 года назад

      @Chris Jones at FSUK the fastest endurance lap was set by WHZ Zwickau (4wd electric) with a 63 second run, followed by Malta (2 cyl), Cardiff (3 Cyl) and De Montfort (3 cyl) who all got laptimes in the 66 second range. This was when 4WD cars could run at 80kw max power, now they're limited to 60kw if they're 4wd I'd wager they'd lose a second or 2 over what they could have done with 80kw so they'ed still be faster. It's worth noting though that only 1 EV actually finished an event at all at FSUK2022, which was Stavanger uni, and their fastest lap was in the 80 second range.

    You mentioned autocross"Fastest Time of Day" . I'm curious how and what class this would be eligible for in an SCCA autocross event?? Would it be eligible for the national class runoffs championship???

    • @bhesl
      @bhesl Год назад

      My team competed in an SCCA autocross. Not sure what class we were supposed to be in but we won overall, beating Porsches and teslas etc. so it’s possible to do well but if the tracks top speed is much above 70 it’ll probably get smoked. The FSAE regulations and track setups are done in a way to keep top speeds down

    With a R6 motor in it I'm baffled at the choice of the size tires and wheels they chosen to use. 🤔 I understand it's multi application as in launch but also need to handle high speed road course style driving. But they just seem stiff and little considering how light and stiff the car is.
    I Had a Yamaha R6 bike. I know how powerful it was even over 100mph it would accelerate like it was going 20. Let alone this light chassis. I'm curious the suspension choice?! And is there adjustable valving and dampening?!?! Like a good coilover or maybe like a dirtbike style rear shock?!?!
    This is AWESOME 👌 👏 👍 😍
    Hope this continues to grow. This is exactly what the younger generation needs to advance after GoKarts before jumping Into open wheel SK Modifieds or Tour type Modifieds.

      I’ve been off the team for a few years, but it’s a big process to design and build one. I’m assuming they’ve done analysis and found they’d save more time and gain more points focusing on other areas of the car. This car placed 3rd in Michigan endurance last year, and the team placed 2nd the year before that

    All that research just to point the muffler forward so that it is forcing the air back in to the exhaust that it should be pushing out.

      the U bend muffles it, it isn't done for no reason and the extra backpressure is negligable.
