    Thank you for reading and reviewing Illborn, and for such an interesting review. I am delighted that you enjoyed it. It was my debut novel, and is the first book of a 4 book series. I am currently editing and am a few months away from finishing book 3.

      Thanks for the great reading experience! I can't wait to read the 2nd book later this year.

    It has an amazing prologue. The disconnect between the main characters feels deliberate, and those connections start being realized later on in book 2. Glad you liked it. It is a pretty good debut series.

    Got my love for fantasy back again. I am a 60 year old that loved fantasy in my 20 Ties and 30 ties but the wheel of time really put me off . It’s the first fantasy book since 20 years and I was hesitant if maybe I had outgrown the genre. It was a page turner . Loved it.
    But yes I get your cliffhanger thing. He ends every chapter with a cliffhanger…..

    Great that you’re shining a light on this one Matt, the sequel (Aiduel’s Sin) was released last year, and it was my book of the year!
    Thoroughly enjoying this series, it’s a really compelling read. Fantastic analysis and review by yourself also! 👍

    I will check this one out, although Grimdark usually isn't my thing. I dislike relentless gloom and doom, there has to be some sort of release, moments of levity, or things going the character's way. I do want to thank you for The Will of the Many. I read that based on your review and it's probably one of the best book I've read in the last decade. Loved it. Read it long into the night when I should have gone to bed, and suffered the next day from lack of sleep. Really one of those 'cannot put down' kind of books.

    I had similar problems with this as you Matt. 4/5 for me. One of the best/most shocking prologues ever.

    Great review Matt! SO happy you enjoyed this one! It's one of my favourite Indie Fantasy books of all time! I think the sequel is even better! Always look forward to your content!

    Loved these first two books. I'm still looking for something to scratch this itch a year after finishing number 2. I don't understand what people actually do finish if they DNF this. I guess people like me who only have 20 min here, 30 minutes there to read instead of sitting for hours a day prefer this? I dunno. My style for sure though

    I believe the author will release part 3 somewhere this year. It's a 4 book series if I am correct.

    I’ve read the first one in this series in 2 days. I enjoyed it while reading it, but I forgot almost everything about it in a week. Gave it a 3.5/5. It was never boring or slow paced for me, but not exceptional either. I have the second book and will probably need to reread the first one to understand what is going on in the plot.

    I saw this review and it reminded me to read this book. I can say that I really liked the first book and immediately jumped to read the second but I was instantly disappointed. I just can't stand a certain pov character and it almost ruins the series for me. I didn't hate their chapters in the first book but he's made them so much worse in the sequel. Not sure if I will continue the series if I have to read another one of their chapters.

    I will say, after reading both books I agree with Matt's take that the series has a big problem with pacing. That being said it is a decent series so far, but I probably wouldn't give it as high a rating as Matt did. Also someone should clip that section, you know which one. Hehe.

    I'm glad you mentioned the prose issues. That was a dealbreaker for me and I had to DNF, but can understand why you can enjoy it if that doesn't bother you as much. I also felt the character backstories and the religion were cliche. I dunno, but this book wasn't for me, but know it's great for a lot of people.

    Hi Matt. Thanks again for reading and reviewing Illborn. Would it be OK for me to send a signed paperback copy of each of Illborn and Aiduel's Sin to you? No worries if you would prefer not, but I'd love to send copies if you would like them. Thanks, Daniel

    I think that you should change the way you rate books. There is too much 5/5, maybe 1-10 scale would be better. Regards. :D

    • @MattsFantasyBookReviews
      @MattsFantasyBookReviews  2 месяца назад +7

      I already give a 1-10 scale, since I give scores of .5. This 4.5 could be translated to a 9/10

    • @Daniel-ti9vg
      @Daniel-ti9vg 2 месяца назад +2

      @@MattsFantasyBookReviews I thought about 9.6 and 9.9 score. Not every 5/5 book is equal.

    • @MattsFantasyBookReviews
      @MattsFantasyBookReviews  2 месяца назад +2

      @@Daniel-ti9vg Ah, so a 100 point scale. That would be cool, but I would have to really think about each score and part of my thing is just giving a gut reaction. I can't get into that much detail with a gut reaction score.

    I wanted to like this book. I made it about half way through. I feel bad, but had to DNF. I usually don’t mind such drastic juxtapositions, but the different POVs were quite jarring. I also found myself hating two of the characters. The pacing was also odd. Couldn’t stick with it. It was so disappointing, it put me in a bad reading slump.

    I liked this book when I read it two years ago. I gotta get the second one. It wasnt a blowout read like I heard from Petrik, but it's solid. I think it's going to end up quite unique based on what we saw in this first one.
    My biggest problem was that the narration didn't feel as intimate with the characters as other books I love, but again it's solid!

    Very surprised you liked this one. I found it very poorly written - felt inexperienced and rushed - and unfortunately had to DNF. Spoken to many other readers who agree.
