Who were the Holy Innocents in the Bible?

Three days after Christmas, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Innocents. The Holy Innocents were the infant children that King Herod ordered to be killed in an attempt to find and murder the Messiah, Jesus Christ. The Holy Innocents are considered the first Christian martyrs for their death.

When Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, a star shined bright above him in the sky. Three wise men from the East saw the star and traveled to Jerusalem searching for the newborn king of the Jews.
Although Judea was under the Roman Empire’s rule, a king named Herod sat on the local throne. People disliked him for his ties to the Romans and lack of loyalty to God.
Herod felt threatened by the news from the wise men about a new king of the Jews and asked them to return after they found him. He wanted to find and kill the new king, but the wise men did not return.
For fear of losing his power, Herod ordered all male children age two and under around Bethlehem to be killed. These innocent young children are called the first martyrs by the Catholic Church. They were innocent and did not deserve to be killed yet they died for Jesus Christ.
Meanwhile Joseph was warned in a dream to take Jesus and Mary to Egypt to escape King Herod until the terrible king died.
