The hardest thing to deal with as an American MLS fan is being chastised for following a league with no history... how can we get history if the rest of the world makes fun of us for trying to develop it? Thanks for making this video and showing a few of the big rivalries in the league that only get stronger with time and showing the world that we might not have hundreds of years of precedent, but we have passion and we're forging our path!
Coming from Seattle...playing a Portland or Vancouver soccer team is like playing against your cousin that you have love for but can't stand! Anyone that had been to a game against any of the three will not deny that there are true rivalries in the MLS that goes back before they were a part of the league.
@@jthanrubio1126 As a Timbers fan I 100% agree, and the rivalry , especially with Portland and Seattle, reminds me of the Copa90 video on the Merseyside Derby: For 363 days of the year, they might be your brother, they might be your best friend. On Derby Day...... nah.
I was at that game in the Timbers section at Starfire. Because of the Seattle fans acting up after the game, both the Timbers fans and referee had to be escorted out by the police.
LAFC vs Galaxy -- "The L.A. County Classic" -- Perhaps it's biggest virtue is that the games do not disappoint! The games are hyped up by fans and media, and they constantly deliver.
Agreed, the rivalry is great but the games actually deliver too. Just as a comparison - I’ve been to dozens of dull Merseyside derbies over the years 😂
@@panowa8319 I don't know firsthand, but it's said that ChivasUS brought a new flavor of supporters culture to MLS when they joined back in 2004 or 05.
@panowa8319 it was crap. ChivasUSA was a garbage team and had very few supporters. The supporters they brought to MLS were, strangely enough, MLS haters. The plastic fans three have today are very manufactured (how can you have “Ultras” day one???).
Brilliant list, brother! Glad to see more exposure to these rivalries. As a SoCal native, it’s got to be El Trafico for me because even though it’s a new rivalry, every match has been bonkers. The first meeting this year was supposed to be at the Rose Bowl (neutral site) that seats 100,000 spectators. Got canceled for a really bad storm and has been moved to July 4th - Independence Day 🇺🇸 It should be chaos. That said, I’ve got to give it to Seattle, Portland and the Cascadia Cup for the moment. That’s the Grandaddy of them all. 🤙
Thanks mate! Yeah the Cascadia Cup seems to tick every box but I genuinely think El Traffico will just get bigger and bigger. It definitely has the potential to develop into one of the world’s great derbies. The 4-3 game on Zlatan’s debut for Galaxy is one of the best derby matches I’ve ever seen 🔥
I also want to put LAFC vs Galaxy as #1 but I can definetly see your pont for the cascade rivalry. I would argue though that El traffico is featuring two teams(that truly do not like each other) with incredible proximity to one another gives it points as well. Also did you check out Zlatan's final game. LAFC completely dismantled him mentally).
@@FootballWeekender: In reality the Cascadia Cup is a three-way rivalry which includes the Vancouver Whitecaps that traces it's roots back to the original North American Soccer League of the 1970's, and now Austin FC (current Cup holders), FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo compete for the Division 1 Copa Tejas as well as the Copa Tejas Shield with sides from the lower division USL Championship & NWSL leagues based in Texas.......
I have been a Sounders fan since they were in the USL and even then the games against the Timbers were hardcore. Both teams moving up to MLS only made the matches even more intense.
This last ECF just made it even spicier. FCC’s best season, they win the supporter’s shield, and manage to blow a 2-0 lead at home to their rivals who go on to win the cup.
Vancouver Whitecaps have a rivalry with Seattle and Portland that goes back to NASL days through the USL days and now with the MLS. You should look up Rangers legend Willie Johnston's antics at the corner flag when he was at the Whitecaps
@@FootballWeekender aye it sure was and our home was Swanguard Stadium now home to Whitecaps 2 and TSS Rovers of League One British Columbia. They are playing in the Canadian Championship (our domestic cup) against CPL side Valour soon after winning the league to qualify
@@FootballWeekender it's a fun stadium haha. People of my dad's generation will remember Callister Park in East Vancouver which was a very traditional soccer specific stadium. The home of the Italian soccer community in Vancouver and where some of our 86 world cup squad grew up. Callister Park even hosted friendlies with a BC All star side taking on teams like Hearts, Huddersfield Town and Manchester United in the 50s
Love hearing about the history. When I hear the Whitecaps mentioned, the first name I think of is Peter Beardsley. Interesting he was over there as a young player, then went on to great things over here - not a usual career path.
The newest MLS club in St. Louis, Missouri, is expected to have huge rivalries with Sporting Kansas City and Chicago Fire, so maybe it'll be on this list when these rivalries become most established.
Don't forget Minnesota United, aka the Loons, giving the MLS Midwest regional rivalries that American Football's NFL NFC North Division (also known as the Black & Blue Division, due to the physicality of the competing teams involved) sort of feel to it.......
Respect for this video, as a Toronto supporter I have to say our rivalry with Montreal is based on genuine dislike and historical and cultural differences between the 2 cities. There was a fight in the stands between supporters in this years Canada Cup match in Toronto, and these 2 played one of the best home and away ties in MLS playoffs in the semi finals in 2016, check that out. Both games were instant classics, with Toronto going down 0-3 in the first half of the leg in Montreal only to get 2 away goals in the second half and win the second leg 5-2 at home in extra time. That, along with our MLS Cup win in 2017 still leaves a bitter taste in Montreal mouth to this day. Forever in our Shadow!
It is arguably the ugliest rivalry if not the one that garners the most attention from the league. I'm TFC as well- you always have to watch your back in Mtl... (well, when you are there on an away)
I wish the Rays would of moved to Montreal. Imagine Montreal and Toronto being in the same division. It would be up with the Yankees v Red Sox rivalry.
The Cascadia rivalry between Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver has been going on since the mid-1970s. It's apparent with Seattle-Portland, however, I'm not sure about Seattle, but I heard that it's very fierce between Portland and Vancouver.
I'd say the best way to look at is Van is a lower table, Por is mid (most years) and Sea is the "gold standard" of the mls. So to sounders fans Por and Van are like little brothers just Por doesn't know when to shut up.
Great list As a Cincinnati supporter we always immediately circle Hell is Real home and away matches as the big ones on the calendar, both sides really get up for it and hate losing to the other. I think if both sides play in big matches like the playoffs the atmosphere would be insane.
Thanks mate. I didn’t know a huge amount about the Hell is Real derby until doing the research for this video, it’s definitely one of the more underrated ones - looks awesome 🔥
clint dempsey said it best, “now that we won one, portland can’t say shit!”. but respect to the timbers. before last year, for 6 years straight it was either portland or seattle in the final from the west. portland, seattle, seattle, portland, seattle, seattle, and portland again. absolutely crazy consistently
Former Timbers season ticket holder here, and I was at the Metrostars first ever game vs. NE Revolution in 96. Timbers fans are an odd lot. They spend more time watching each other than the do the game.
Sunday 20th August 2023 can't get here fast enough for this FCC supporter as all the🔶&🔷 need to clinch the aggregate Hell Is Real (and the I-71 bragging rights for the season that go to the winner) is either the away win or draw; anything else means That Side Up North (to paraphrase the late great Woody Hayes as a reference to the Columbus Crew) gets to keep the crown for another season.......
@@ianschulze1461: I'm almost willing to have the 🟠&🔵 really suck this season if it means we FINALLY win the aggregate Hell Is Real over That Side Up North; besides, we've got a much bigger problem facing both of us, that being that 600 pound gorilla in the room being created down in South Florida by The GOAT 🐐 and his buddies who are relentlessly pursuing every trophy they can get their hands on, with their ultimate mission being becoming the first MLS side to win the FIFA Club World Cup, which I can see happening........
Ah, I wasn’t aware of this! The distances between rival cities in the USA throws me off, so it’s hard to know who hates who 😄 But I suppose Barcelona and Madrid aren’t exactly close!
As a life long Portlander but relatively new Timbers Fan April 15th 2023 was an absolutely mind-blowing day for me, especially since I was in the crowd. It has without a doubt gone down in my core memories forever I damn near lost my voice that day
There could be a whole video for several of these, but the Orlando v ATL one is a lot of fun. Atlanta travels REALLY well to many places, but Orlando is a big one. The ATL FO even got a billboard next to the stadium for the first game that had Atlanta players and said "We are here to Conquer." And they did. So many fun matches: Will's scream about a non-foul. Tito hit a worldly to break Orlando hearts. Orlando SGs trashed an ATL tailgate and stole a banner like high school kids. They made their tifo a Walking Dead tribute that targeted an ATL SG (which was actually really well done.) While they are 7hr apart, they were the only teams in the south, and each other's closest away match. The rivalry would actually be one of the best, if Orlando had beaten ATL even once in the first couple thousand matches. Oh, well.
Thanks for this comment mate, I love hearing this stuff! Yeah it seems like so much has already happened between Atlanta and Orlando in these first few years. I thought at first it was a bit contrived by the league but it’s turned into a genuine mutual deep dislike between the two 😂
@@FootballWeekender that's because Orlando is home to a bunch of clowns who's personality type is My Chemical Romance so it's not hard to hate them #OFYO
@@gabekeeter6415 Atlanteans are such tryhards, and nonsense like this proves it. In reality we don't even care about Atlanta, much less hate them. If Orlando City has any rivalries it's with NYCFC, a fellow team that existed long before Atlanta United was even conceived (likely the same way everything else in Georgia is conceived, through inbreeding.)
@@FootballWeekender: Meanwhile the Florida Derby between O-City and Inter Miami CF is about to get real acrimonious thanks to Miami's new #10, namely The G.O.A.T., one Lionel Andres Messi......
Orlando's dislike for Atlanta starts because there was a friendship between the supporters of Orlando City when we were minor league from 2011-2014 and the previously existing (and forced to close) Atlanta club, Atlanta Silverbacks. when Arthur Blank threw his NFL money at the league, the league forced the silverbacks to close (as is common with big money expansion franchises coming to cities where there already exists a team that's non MLS such as whats happening to San Diego, what has happened to St Louis and Atlanta). Atlanta came into the league on that silverspoon and with their goofy sounding chants, were backed by the league as the poster child of MLS supporter culture, which pissed us off. I wont take away that they could afford to put better talent on the field than our broke Brazilian paymasters and beat our ass the first 3-4 years of their existence, but they havent been shit since Tata Martino's influence and squad slowly but surely scattered from the club. they still spend top dollar, but havent won shit since the open cup 2019 with the majority of that 2018 championship squad still intact. TLDR, they came with big money and cleared out an existing culture, while demonstrating no understanding of supporter culture and that rubbed Orlando supporters the wrong way. cheers from an Orlando supporter. @@FootballWeekender
As someone who has attended a lot of LAFC games Carson is the most contentious games of the season there’s a lot of animosity between the supporters and the clubs it’s an intense experience to be apart of and watch
To me, the LA rivalry has to be number one, considering any game between those two teams is "must see TV." I'm not a fan of either team, but I have to watch "El Trafico." It never disappoints. Do you know if people are watching Apple TV coverage across the pond? I get the feeling that if MLS league pass is easy to watch in Europe, MLS will gain a lot of fans over there. It's a fun league to watch.
Yeah I agree on El Traffico, I think that’s got the potential to develop into one of the World’s great derbies actually. Certainly one of the most viewed anyway. I don’t know how much the Apple TV coverage has changed things this season but awareness of MLS over here is definitely growing in general. I think it’s a combination of things - the standard of the league is getting better, the fan culture is blossoming into something really cool and the whole package is just very slick (team shirts, stadiums, food etc). Exciting times for an MLS fan.
As a Charlotte FC supporter, I hope to see Charlotte vs Atlanta on here on day, but ultimately, I wish South Carolinians had their own MLS team :( maybe one day if a relegation system is put into place, Charleston can rise up from the USL. The way we’re playing though, we might meet them down there 😭
Incidentally, keep an eye on the burgeoning rivalry between Nashville SC and southeastern opponents Atlanta FC. The head-to-head record stands at 2-2-3; to-date, Nashville's greatest win in Geodis Park (AKA "The Ring of Fire") was its de-throning of Atlanta from its perch as U.S.Ooen Cup champion in 2022.
@@AKUNJIG: You've also got to add the two participants in the Florida Derby, namely O-City and Inter Miami (especially now that they have The 🐐 in the lineup) to the equation, plus since DC, being South of the Mason-Dixon Line technically makes them a Southern City means DCU also warrants consideration.......
@@handsomeclem208 Well Supporters Groups between Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, and DC have created a Championship Belt up for Grabs now. Orlando & Inter Miami can stick to their own.
You should definitely look into the Save The Crew movement that, saved the crew from a horrible owner who lied in order to circumvent the expansion process and tried to move the team to Austin.
Thanks mate. I think there’s a lot of reasons but there’s definitely more attention being paid to MLS from the UK now because the fan culture seems to have taken off and people are noticing that. Big crowds, tifos etc. The whole ‘Footy Scran’ phenomenon probably helps too - lots of posts on Twitter of awesome food in stadiums over there 😄 It’s also interesting that MLS seems to be picking up a lot of the best talent from Denmark, Norway & Sweden. So it’s clear the standard of the league is improving in general, and the money is there of course.
@@FootballWeekender the MLS is also grabbing a lot of young talent from South America, right from under Europe snows, developing them further, and then trance furring them to Europe at a higher price. That might also be part of what’s making people take notice in Europe, but I am an American so that’s my perspective.
Missed opportunity to include the video of an injured Josef Martinez at home on his couch laughing at Orlando for losing in the US Open Cup😂 But in all seriousness great video
@@xviper2k Remind me which club doesn't have a MLS Cup between Atlanta and Seattle. Congrats on finally getting a trophy Atlanta United won before you. What took you so long?😂
I appreciate you acknowledging how damn huge the USA is... I watched a video earlier talking about how massive a land that England (not the UK, England) was and how that was why there were so many clubs. I grew up in Montana and just had to laugh.
As an Orlando City supporter, the thing about Orlando City-Atlanta United rivalry, the main dislike towards Atlanta United is that the majority of Orlando City fans dislike them because they are seen as a plastic club, like they were literally created from scratch when the league granted an expansion team to Atlanta, even in a way driving the Atlanta Silverbacks out of existence in the process. Orlando City on the other hand has a history from before it joined MLS, and a successful one at that. There's also the Florida-Georgia rivalry that already exists from other sports, especially in college sports. Side Note: I'm sure if you polled Orlando supporters, there'd probably be a split as to who's the bigger rival between Atlanta United and Inter Miami.
Thanks for this mate, it’s interesting to hear more about the history of the rivalry. I’m guessing the rivalry with Inter Miami will grow too, as they become more established, so that could develop into something big 🔥
Another one that seems to really only be talked about by the fans of the two clubs is Real Salt Lake and Sporting Kansas City. Back in 2011 the teams met in a preseason match that ended early due to a bench clearing brawl. Teams haven't like each other since. I know a lot of RSL fans (myself included) put the rivalry with SKC above the one with Colorado. The two also had a crazy MLS Cup Final match in 2013 that SKC won in penalties.
Putting Portland and Seattle anywhere but #1 would have been a piss take as our soccer rivalry was already old enough to drink a beer when MLS kicked its first ball. It's generational.
"Lorry"/"Truck," "chips"/"fries," "football"/"soccer"... We have different words for many things, but communicate with little difficulty. Who cares if we have different names for the beautiful game?
A non-MLS derby that might potentially be an MLS derby One day is Birmingham legion FC versus Memphis 901 FC. Two very close cities in the deep south. It’s pretty small because it’s in the USL championship, but for fans of these teams this is the game that is circled on the calendar. This is the game that bring the largest crowds of the season for either team.
As an American who watches MLS very closely, I don't disagree with anything on your list. My club is Atlanta and yeah, the rivalry with Orlando was definitely manufactured at first. It definitely grew beyond that fairly quick though. I live by Orlando (and after spending most of my childhood in Atlanta) and even supported Orlando to a degree before Atlanta got a team. When Atlanta first played at Orlando, some of the Lions fans actually engaged in unprovoked attacks on Atlanta supporters. To be fair, it was only a small number and doesn't reflect their support-base as a whole, but it definitely added some fuel to the fire of the rivalry for me. Little things here and there have added to it more, and even with some other clubs around now that are closer to Atlanta - like Charlotte and Nashville - the rivalry with Orlando has its own charms. The two best rivalries from my perspective are Seattle vs Portland and LAFC vs LA Galaxy. I make it a point never to miss those.
Great comment mate, I enjoyed reading that! There’s been quite a few mentions of Orlando vs Atlanta now, so I’m thinking maybe I underestimated that rivalry and it should’ve been placed higher 🤔
There's a driving issue everyone is forgetting about. Iron Lion Firm has a friendship with Atlanta Ultras, who for obvious reasons, hate Atlanta United's existence. So you had Orlando City fans who disliked Atlanta United since the beginning.
I love how a lot of these picks are " oh okay that makes sense " but as soon as the banner for Portland and Seattle my immediate reaction was " oh yeah those guys are disgusting for no reason " LMAO got some ice scream to watch that part and everything XD
Glad to see the MLS getting love from people outside of the United States though I credit that to when David Beckham decided to sign with an MLS team his popularity really helped the MLS's credibility
That ATL RB rivalry is a genuine one, built up from real on-field matches of importance and real results mattering. The biggest difference between this rivalry and other is that ATL wins every game that matters. Sit down, RB.
That first game is on the "MLS Classics" page the league was running during the pandemic. I swear, we controlled that thing for about 70min. Made me feel good that we could actually play, though. After waiting so long, it was good to know we weren't going to be contenders for the spoon.
Great List. Mixing in the Modern & Old Rivalries. Yes the Atlanta vs Orlando Rivalry was fabricated since we were the only Clubs in the Southeast at the time. Now that Rivalry doesn't have as much importance anymore since we now have Nashville & Charlotte while Orlando has Miami.
Love that you actually called it the Hudson River Derby, hate when people call it the NY Derby. It we calling it by any real location name, NJ Derby is more acceptable. Red Bull don't play home in NY, NCYFC at times play home games in NJ, so if anything, it's a somewhat NJ Derby.
Loved this video. I know Houston and Dallas is the main rivalry in Texas, but Austin having the best fans out of the 3 (simply facts) spices it up into a Copa Tejas Derby!
Fantastic video. I had heard that the Portland-Seatle clashes were right up there and I love football derbies- I presume ,like in the UK it would be nigh on impossible to buy a ticket and even if I was lucky to get one it would cost a fortune
Great video! Another growing one here is Inter Miami and Orlando City. This is due more to the proximity than anything else, but nevertheless, the fans do NOT like each other
Thanks mate! I wondered about Orlando vs Miami with them being state rivals yeah. Inter Miami are still really new so I thought the rivalry wasn’t quite established yet but it’s cool to know that’s developing into something!
I’ll agree with the OP. PHILLY NYC is good. Philly and DC United is also a multi-sport rivalry across basically all 5 sports. When the Penguins play the Caps in the NHL the winning fans get to troll the losing fans from the courthouse steps across the street.
On number one I would throw the whitecaps in their as well. The cascadia cup is really cool and whitecap fans are also pretty rude to the other teams fans. But they do lack culture i could see why its the sounders vs timbers #rctid
As a Dynamo fan, Austin FC has given me a much more darker hatred. Because we don't see them as rivals, but we see them as intruders because of their owner and how he tried to destroy Columbus Crew.
Non MLS Rivalries: Orlando City vs Tampa Bay Rowdies Inter Miami vs Miami FC Detroit City FC vs Columbus Crew San Antonio FC vs Austin FC Sacramento Republic FC vs San Jose Earthquakes/Galaxy All of these have been in the Open Cup last year and Orlando and Tampa Bay have been going at it since Orlando City was in USL Championship. And Ohio and Michigan have a rivalry that goes back centuries due to a border conflict so that has bled over into sports. Can't wait until the US Open Cup to see what new chapters will be written!
As far as MLS-USLC US Open Cup rivalries go, don't overlook FC Cincinnati-Indy Eleven FC and the Dirty River Derby between FCC and Louisville City, whose roots go back to when both sides played in USLC......
I always liked Houston Dynamo because is the home of some the best players in Honduras like: Maynor Figueroa, Boniek García, Alberth Elis and Romell Quioto.
I miss when Toronto Montreal was the craziest rivalry in MLS, until Mtl deleted their ultras... They also lost a lot of fans due to the horrendous rebranding in 2021. As a result, many Montreal supporters and TFC maintain that the current Montreal is distinct from the pre-2021 club. Sadly the Mtl "Impact" vs TFC rivalry no longer exists thanks to the executives at CF Montreal.
You should do a video on the Cascadia Cup. The rivalry isn't just Portland n Seattle, people always forget about Vancouver (sorry guys, Seattle remembers you)
Great video, but surprised Philadelphia Union & NYRB didn't get in, they literally burn a red bull effigy for their fans before home games. Not to mention the intense gravity of the Union's growing rivalry with NYCFC
@@FootballWeekender: You can always create a Honourable Mention category where you could include multiple team regional rivalries such as Cascadia Cup and Copa Tejas.......
I just found your channel today. This is my first video. But I am definitely subscribing! Really hoping to see more MLS coverage. Thanks for watching, subscribing and the kind comments! 🙏 With living in the UK, my match day content is all European at the moment but doing these Top 10 videos means I can cover subjects from all over the world, which is cool. I’ll aim to do some more MLS content!
New England Revolution vs Chicago Fire were rivals in 2000s. They played each other in the playoffs 8 times. This rivalry was going on until 2010s where both teams had many bad season and out of playoffs. I went to the match back in 2017 at Chicago. Chocago fans was rowdy at the time until Chicago Fire have a new ownership. That new ownership banned their own fan supporters group called section 8 Chicago for no reason, rebranding their crest twice and added FC on the crest which the Fire fans turned against the organization. Every time when New England Revolution trying to find their rivals like Philadelphia, NYCFC, NY Red Bulls and Montreal but it was overshadowed by other rivalries and derbies and never played in a derby before.
I don't think they banned Section 8 (which from my understanding isn't a group with membership, it's more a collective of groups), they banned Sector Latino, who has been recognized again anyways.
I agree with nine of your selections. I don’t think that there is as much to Atlanta United versus Orlando city as you let on. Atlanta United versus Charlotte FC is a completely different story! These two cities and states have rivalries in almost every sport. There have been than incidences in all three meetings thus far. Both play in two of the largest capacity stadiums in the league, and both fan bases completely show out. The cities are also much closer to each other than Atlanta and Orlando are. It’s a darn shame that this one didn’t make the list. These two teams, and these two Fanbases absolutely hate each other! As a Charlotte FC fan who has been to all three meetings between these teams, home and away, I think I am qualified to make that statement.
@@AKUNJIG I highly doubt they will ever be opening the full stadium again. The supporter groups throw a temper tantrum for Charlotte when they decide to open the full stadium. Our owner has also learned that if you tarp off half of the seats, you can make the ticket prices higher for the other half.
@@AKUNJIG I don’t know if you saw the absolute meltdown by Charlotte FC supporter groups after we had the full stadium opened on opening day were 69,300 fans showed up. It was the most embarrassing thing to see is a Charlotte fan. I have never seen so many supporter groups attack their own fans, and say so many negative things about the club in about the team for daring to open up the stadium and let it be full.
I think El Traffico should have been 2 or 1. Galaxy vs LAFC is usually the best game. I think Miami vs LA Galaxy is gonna be a future classic. Two teams with a lot of star players. Galaxy always spends money to get a star and Inter Miami just got Messi.
I have hated the Portland Timbers since 1974. It's a feeling deeper than hate. It is the best rivalry in this league, and if you haven't experienced it, you must.
LAFC fan here and as much as El Tráfico is, I hate Seattle and Portland more than the Galaxy. Their fans are so smug and obnoxious…so I do have to agree Portland/Seattle is the best rivalry in the league, and it’s a really fun game to watch because no matter what someone you can’t stand is going to lose.
Atlanta United vs Orlando makes some senses fans wise. Iron Lion Firm of Orlando City has (or had at least) a friendship with the Atlanta Ultras of the Atlanta Silverbacks, who obviously had a big dislike for Atlanta United when they became a thing, so that dislike would have been shared by Iron Lion Firm.
As someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes FC Cincinnati, I can confidently say I hate the Columbus Crew more than anything in this life. Especially after what happened in December…
As an honorable mention, I would have Columbus Crew vs. Austin FC. Due to the ownership of Austin FC being the snake that he is. I firmly believe he is asking MLS not to schedule a game because he knows he is not welcome in Columbus. Go CREW.
LA Galaxy supporter here. Boy it’s been a ride as a fan of this club. We are going through something as a club, community, and fan base right now. We don’t even really care anymore about results on the field and just want the ownership and management to sort out the horrendous organization, or lack of organization, that has been dragging the club through the mud and into the garbage bin for nearly a decade. It is a sleeping giant desperately needing a shot in the arm to wake back up. With that said, here are LA Galaxy’s greatest rivalries throughout the years: 1. San Jose Earthquakes: 1996 - present Someone in the stands always usually gets arrested during these matchups. Whether in LA or in San Jose, whether it’s the supporters or the players or the coaches, it can get out of hand fairly easily. 2. Seattle Sounders FC: 2010 - 2015 This was a rivalry almost purely out of the quality of both clubs. Galaxy were the standard in the league during those years and were Seattle’s roadblock every year through the MLS Cup Playoffs. Sadly, for six or seven years we haven’t even been good enough to make the playoffs anymore while Seattle are still an impressive, well-oiled machine led by a great coach. Hats off to them. 3. LA Galaxy supporters Vs their own front office: 2015 - present Disaster on the field, terrible recruiting, horrendous “marketing” of washed up players, Zlatan Ibrahimovic being the exception because he is God, and a club president who keeps getting contract renewals even though he has been god awful, got caught cheating in 2019 and is currently suspended by MLS, and just in general has his head up his ass. 4. Liga MX Clubs: 1996 - present A curveball here for those who don’t know. Being a soccer club in Los Angeles has not been easy. While there are some great clubs in MLS with fierce competition, they don’t compare to the tug of war between the families of soccer fans in America, especially for Mexican-Americans. The huge presence of fandom behind many Mexican football clubs in the homes of Mexican-Americans has made it very difficult for MLS clubs to battle for the hearts and attention of fans across the entire Southwest of the US. Those clubs include Chivas, America, Cruz Azul, Pumas, Atlas, Toluca, Tigres, and more. Also, when Galaxy actually plays against these clubs, whether it’s a friendly or not, they always get some attention and can often get heated. And as a Mexican-American myself, getting a win of any kind over any Liga MX club is a feeling that is unmatched even when playing other MLS clubs. Like getting a win last year at SoFi Stadium over my own father’s club Chivas de Guadalajara was a very special moment. 😊☺️🤗 🇺🇸 🇲🇽 5. LAFC: 2018 - present What can I say about LAFC supporters other than, ughhh cringe. Corny, undeservedly cocky, kind of legitimately stupid, drunk, violent, young, European hooligan wannabes, Eurosnobs, anti-American at times, anti-MLS phonies, bandwagon bandits, glory(hole) hunters, wack. I just do not like them or anything about their manufactured culture. 👎👎
Wow mate, what a brilliant comment! 👏 Really enjoyed reading that, very interesting. Just on the rivalry with the Liga MX clubs - does the CONCACAF Champions League sit high on the list of priorities for fans of MLS clubs in general? Is winning it a bigger deal than the MLS Cup, or is it seen as a secondary competition?
Thanks man. You’re video is excellent and you’re very knowledgeable on MLS. To answer your question about CONCACAF Champions League, it’s difficult to say. From my perspective, MLS Cup will always be the top priority. Anything else you win besides MLS Cup is good and an extra feather on your cap, but ultimately it’s the Cup we are after. Galaxy has even won the intercontinental championship in North America before they changed the name to Champions League, which I think you mentioned. And that’s a point of pride even if it wasn’t as strong of a competition back then. No other club can say they did that, except DC United I believe. However, we call ourselves the one and ONLY American club to have won five MLS Cups for a reason. That prestige reaches far around the globe. Wish we could’ve had a sixth and maybe even a seventh cup by now but as I mentioned previously, we have had terrible management for too many years. 😔 It’s also hard to say whether other MLS fans consider the CCL a top priority. My guess is that everyone wanted to be that first club to finally dethrone Mexican clubs and win it in its new iteration and era. And now that Seattle has won it, I’m sure other fans will be a lot more optimistic about getting further in the competition and it’ll encourage clubs to take it more seriously.
Carson fans are trash. You’re just mad because LAFC has taken the spotlight lmao Bunch of frauds just talk shit, jump people and make up bs assumptions/lies. Pathetic sad people should go to jail for the shit you have done.

Anyone that had been to a game against any of the three will not deny that there are true rivalries in the MLS that goes back before they were a part of the league.
Quit worrying what others think. All that matters is we like MLS. Nothing else matters
@@jthanrubio1126 As a Timbers fan I 100% agree, and the rivalry , especially with Portland and Seattle, reminds me of the Copa90 video on the Merseyside Derby: For 363 days of the year, they might be your brother, they might be your best friend. On Derby Day...... nah.
The Sounders-Timbers game with the three red cards was a US Open Cup match. It is referred to as the “Red Card Wedding.”
Gay.
Just as a comparison - I’ve been to dozens of dull Merseyside derbies over the years 😂
Before they folded, how was the rivalry between the Galaxy and Chivas USA?
@@panowa8319 I don't know firsthand, but it's said that ChivasUS brought a new flavor of supporters culture to MLS when they joined back in 2004 or 05.
Who in the hell calls it the LA County Classic? Is this another LAFC bs thing? It’s El Traffico homie
Got canceled for a really bad storm and has been moved to July 4th - Independence Day 🇺🇸
It should be chaos.

I would argue though that El traffico is featuring two teams(that truly do not like each other) with incredible proximity to one another gives it points as well.

Vancouver Whitecaps have a rivalry with Seattle and Portland that goes back to NASL days through the USL days and now with the MLS. You should look up Rangers legend Willie Johnston's antics at the corner flag when he was at the Whitecaps

@@FootballWeekender it's a fun stadium haha. People of my dad's generation will remember Callister Park in East Vancouver which was a very traditional soccer specific stadium.

The Timbers seem to have their best derby matches in the years when they struggle against the rest of the league. Another mark of a "true derby"?
There could be a whole video for several of these, but the Orlando v ATL one is a lot of fun. Atlanta travels REALLY well to many places, but Orlando is a big one. The ATL FO even got a billboard next to the stadium for the first game that had Atlanta players and said "We are here to Conquer." And they did. So many fun matches: Will's scream about a non-foul. Tito hit a worldly to break Orlando hearts. Orlando SGs trashed an ATL tailgate and stole a banner like high school kids. They made their tifo a Walking Dead tribute that targeted an ATL SG (which was actually really well done.)
While they are 7hr apart, they were the only teams in the south, and each other's closest away match.

El Traffico is absolutely on my bucket list of derby games to attend, it’s turned into something huge so quickly 🔥
I’ll say as a NYCFC supporter, our beef with Philly is growing day by day
To me, the LA rivalry has to be number one, considering any game between those two teams is "must see TV." I'm not a fan of either team, but I have to watch "El Trafico." It never disappoints.

This was a cool video. I've noticed more MLS review videos from across the pond lately. What would you attribute that to? All the best...
Thanks mate. I think there’s a lot of reasons but there’s definitely more attention being paid to MLS from the UK now because the fan culture seems to have taken off and people are noticing that. Big crowds, tifos etc. The whole ‘Footy Scran’ phenomenon probably helps too - lots of posts on Twitter of awesome food in stadiums over there 😄
It’s also interesting that MLS seems to be picking up a lot of the best talent from Denmark, Norway & Sweden. So it’s clear the standard of the league is improving in general, and the money is there of course.
@@FootballWeekender the MLS is also grabbing a lot of young talent from South America, right from under Europe snows, developing them further, and then trance furring them to Europe at a higher price. I agree HAIL PORTLAND TIMBERS
Neither; the correct answer is NYCFC. The little hoodlums even vandalized our stadium.

I'm a DC United and MLS fan since birth and this is a perfect list, I agree with every placement. Well done, Englishman.
Also FUCK the Red Bulls
Wait until SKC/STL starts up. It would put all these rivalries look like sleepovers.

That first game is on the "MLS Classics" page the league was running during the pandemic. I swear, we controlled that thing for about 70min. Made me feel good that we could actually play, though. After waiting so long, it was good to know we weren't going to be contenders for the spoon.

I think the Cali Classico is a top 2 with Seattle Portland, LA vs LA just doesn’t have the history
Nailed it mate!!
Also F#@k SeattLe!!
💛💚🌲💚💛
I have a strong feeling that CITY vs Kansas will soon be on this list
Oh yeah, especially since Kansas City did a C&D on a CITY SC fan podcast
That or city Chicago if they get realigned into the same conference
I think El Traffico should have been 2 or 1. Galaxy vs LAFC is usually the best game. I think Miami vs LA Galaxy is gonna be a future classic. Two teams with a lot of star players. Galaxy always spends money to get a star and Inter Miami just got Messi.
Cali Classico used to be the premier rivalry in the league. But MLS would rather push a manufactured rivalry with no history.
Stl City vs SKC coming up very soon👀
I have hated the Portland Timbers since 1974. It's a feeling deeper than hate. It is the best rivalry in this league, and if you haven't experienced it, you must.
LAFC fan here and as much as El Tráfico is, I hate Seattle and Portland more than the Galaxy. Their fans are so smug and obnoxious…so I do have to agree Portland/Seattle is the best rivalry in the league, and it’s a really fun game to watch because no matter what someone you can’t stand is going to lose.
As a Timbers fan that has gone to a lot of Timbers vs sounders games the atmosphere is great and the Tito’s for both sides are amazing
Atlanta will definately develop a bigger rivalry with charlotte, but i would like charlotte to make a rivalry with someone else like nashville
This is real football.
As someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes FC Cincinnati, I can confidently say I hate the Columbus Crew more than anything in this life. Especially after what happened in December…
Haha Portland Timbers are my team and one of there chants are is”let it rain let it pour let the Portland Timbers score lalalalala”
You forgot to mention the Turnpike Derby: Orlando City vs Inter Miami
And you forgot about our fist couple of meetings with Orlando
I hope Charlotte FC can develop a rivalry with someone.
With that said, here are LA Galaxy’s greatest rivalries throughout the years:
1. San Jose Earthquakes: 1996 - present
Someone in the stands always usually gets arrested during these matchups. Whether in LA or in San Jose, whether it’s the supporters or the players or the coaches, it can get out of hand fairly easily.
2. Seattle Sounders FC: 2010 - 2015
This was a rivalry almost purely out of the quality of both clubs.
3. LA Galaxy supporters Vs their own front office: 2015 - present
Disaster on the field, terrible recruiting, horrendous “marketing” of washed up players, Zlatan Ibrahimovic being the exception because he is God, and a club president who keeps getting contract renewals even though he has been god awful, got caught cheating in 2019 and is currently suspended by MLS, and just in general has his head up his ass.
4. Liga MX Clubs: 1996 - present
A curveball here for those who don’t know. 😊☺️🤗 🇺🇸 🇲🇽
5. LAFC: 2018 - present
What can I say about LAFC supporters other than, ughhh cringe.
It’s also hard to say whether other MLS fans consider the CCL a top priority.
You’re just mad because LAFC has taken the spotlight lmao
Bunch of frauds just talk shit, jump people and make up bs assumptions/lies. Pathetic sad people should go to jail for the shit you have done.
