  • @takigan
    @takigan 2 года назад +42

    To me the coolest thing about this that might be interesting from a global perspective is that Hebron is a public high school and the marching band is run by that school. It's not some elite academy that you audition for that accepts the top students. These kids all live with their families in the immediate area of the school building and are required to attend that school by default. Some of these kids will change classes after this year and take something other than marching band (most don't though, because the band is amazing!).
    There are a lot of youth music ensembles in Europe that are more impressive than this, but most of them are select groups that only accept the top students.

    The difficulty level of the music is astounding! Double and triple tonguing is so clear. AND they do it at the end of the show as well, when they are at their most tired part. They continue to open the envelope.
    They are playing music that is so hard, most bands can’t play it sitting down, much less moving in this whip lash drill! I saw Broken Arrow that won BOA (Bands of America), and if it had been Hebron’s turn to go to BOA Nationals, there is no question that Hebron would have been the Grand National Champions. (The schools in Their district rotate which band gets to go to Nationals on a certain year. This year was Marcus HS, which came in 6th I believe at the BOA Nationals. Next year will be Hebron’s turn.) I hope their show for next year will be just as well rounded as this show is.
    BTW - this Drum Corps style, as opposed to A&M which is military style and Ohio State, which is a show band style.
    I think it’s amazing that we are comparing a HIGH SCHOOL group to College programs. If Hebron wanted to, they could go all color guard, brass and percussion and be a competitive Drum Corps!! We shall see…

    How funny - you are watching the band my boys were in. They graduated last year. Hebron is one of the top bands in the state.
    This high school band is way different from college but these kids work HARD.
    Band camp starts about 3 weeks before the school starts.... they go 6 to 8 hrs a day and they start with physical fitness and zumba/stretches and music (during the hot part of the day).
    Once school starts they practice from 4pm to 7:30pm 4 days a week. They also practice early before school on Friday morning. They have competitions most saturdays and they practice on the saturdays they don't have competitions.
    What you are watching is a state level competition which is 6 hours away from where we live. Our school district swept first, second, and third place one of the years my boys were in band.
    These programs sort of tell a story. My favorite routine was *Uncharted waters* in 2016. I still cry when I watch it.

    Really to me the biggest differences is the music, which for high school marching band is typically “harder” music and the so is the drill which is the marching formations and movements, plus they also have props, visuals, and have single show theme the whole year. They also have competitions like this one while college bands don’t. That’s what dci is for which you should give a sniff.

    • @takigan
      @takigan 2 года назад +1

      Colleges and high school marching bands used to have a similar look and feel (and approach/mission) for most of the 20th century. It was really the high schools that were copying what the colleges were doing.
      Then DCI created its competitive circuit in 1972, and various states began forming their own competitive circuits for HS bands to compete in that emulated what DCI was doing. Most colleges didn't follow this model and continued to base their mission around the football culture and entertaining game-day crowds. High Schools began flipping from 'one show per week' to 'one show per season' in order to create a highly polished product that would impress judges in the various state competition circuits. The concept of a show "theme" was also a side effect of following what DCI was doing. Every major show evolution in HS bands (from costuming, to electronics/microphones, to props, to music choices) from 1980 to the present has been a result of schools trying to "outband" each other.
      The whole deal where all the kids have a show shirt that they wear under their uniforms bearing their shows "theme" didn't start becoming a thing until 2000.

    I love seeing an international perspective on “marching arts.” As others have said, you should react to some drum corps videos. Drum corps is similar to high school marching band, but there are no woodwind instruments (only brass and percussion), and the degree of difficulty is usually higher. Three good shows to start with are Bluecoats 2016, Santa Clara Vanguard 2018, and Blue Devils 2019 (the last Drum Corps International winner, before the global shutdowns).
