    This has received a surge in views for some reason lately and a lot of people are asking the same thing, so I'll answer it here. Yes, the eyepatch switches sides throughout the video. This is because some cuts were flagged for copyright and I had to mirror them. I mirrored the footage for the flagged ones and a couple of others I was paranoid about, that's why there was the inconsistency.

    I think that Bradley's really represents what Wrath truly is. Wrath is not expressed outwardly with an out of control fury that destroys everything, but rather it remains inward as a silent, cold, and calculating fury.

    • @Eroil
      @Eroil 6 лет назад +335

      HelixMaster12 As I view it, emotions are complex. There's no one way to be angry, sad, happy and etc. Bradly represented a certain type of fury, one that fit his character better than just uncontrollable fury. That's my opinion, at least.

    • @brigidtheirish
      @brigidtheirish 6 лет назад +221

      As a Catholic, I think Bradley perfectly represents Wrath. Wrath, the sin, is not anger. It is an excessive desire for vengeance and a hatred of God and Truth. Anger is involved, certainly, but anger is an emotion that can be used for good or ill. Someone who coldly plots the murder of someone who cut them off in traffic is just as guilty of Wrath as someone who goes full road rage. Bradley shows both sides of the sin during quiet moments when he expresses his disdain for humanity and during battles when he's screaming at his opponent.

    • @theavatar9191
      @theavatar9191 6 лет назад +125

      Eroil G.r That's the thing. Wrath isn't an emotion. It's a sin. A mindset. A constant being of hatred and fury for all things good. Emotions are just how we express that.

    not really part of his character but i always found funny how some fans thought of his homunculus power as "lame/not fit for rage" i was like "seriously?" i mean...i find the ultimate eye so fitting for rage, have you never experienced pure wrath? how it BLOCKS your attention from everything else? i wouldn't say rage "blinds" people, more that it just makes them see things in a focus, almost tunnel like vision, and i loved the manifestation of such situation in Wrath's power, not much in a way of character analysis i know but just another stroke of genius i found when examining him.

    • @elseby

      amazing interpretation, cause i experienced pure wrath before, im a nice and chill guy, one day the whole classroom was talking and making loud unbearable noises and it made the teacher so annoyed by it, she yelled at me for no reason and to let all her anger on me, i felt oppressed and that i didnt deserved it at all, i felt angry and it kept building step by step until i stormed at her and said real bad things and insultes to her, the teacher got scared and even my friends and classmates didnt knew who i am and started telling me to calm down, at that moment all i was focusing on is the teacher and completetly neglecting what's around me or the consequences that might happen because of the actions am making, i felt like am in control and calculating carefully what i say and do, after i chilled out i realized the shit i just did and felt horrible cause that's not who i am.

    There's also the scene in the early parts of the series when he converses with Pride in the courtyard. He mentions wanting to move over for a "younger generation" since aging is another part of his humanity that he kept. Pride says Wrath spends too much time with humans, and while Wrath agrees, it seems almost shrugged aside. Pride mentions that he will not tell Father of his thoughts, meaning this is not a homunculi desire, but a human one.

    Bradley is the PERFECT representation of wrath. There is nothing scarier in a fight or an argument than a person who stays absolutely calm, collected, and measured. That Bradley is so chill all the time despite the fact he is the literal embodiment of absolute anger/rage/wrath/ire just makes him even more of a threatening presence.
    The military saying of: "the quietest man in the room is always the most dangerous" is multiplied by a factor of ten when applied to Bradley, only once in the series is his rage unmasked, the rest of the time he remains in full control of his power and abilities, causing everyone to underestimate him constantly only to be cut apart by him with ease.
    Bradley in my opinion was one of the best examples of a sin, alongside Greed and Envy. Lust and Gluttony were probably the weakest representations.

    • @andrewpenn1145
      @andrewpenn1145 5 лет назад +38

      I totally agree with the Envy statement. At first, he acts all smug and whatnot; he even kills Hughes, then brags about it. But then he is reduced to nothing by Dr. Marco, then he gets a level head in order to get his hands on another philosophers stone. Once he is defeated by Roy Mustang, he crumbles and succumbs to his envy, and kills himself. Gluttony is kinda goofy, but from a story standpoint, he makes sense. He mainly serves as a sidekick to Lust, accompanying and even protecting her. Then Lust is killed by Roy Mustang. Gluttony may be a silly character, but he is very expressive. He genuinely cares, grieves for, and tries to avenge Lust, and the loss of his best friend causes him to lose his head against Mustang. At this point, Gluttony has done nothing but scare Hawkeye, and we know he has SOME special power, we just don't know what it is. Then we see his ability as a false gate of Truth, and it's terrifying. I was on the edge of my seat, horrified with every second of that scene. Also, when Gluttony takes Alphonse to see Father, he really wants to help. Then he is wrecked by Ling, and made an example of by Pride. I wish Gluttony had a more serious role, other than being the fall guy, as outside of the attack on Mustang, he gets no other parts in the story. He should have teamed up with Kimblee to defeat Pride, or devoured someone to get back at Mustang.
      But that's just my two senz.

    • @lucaskitamura614
      @lucaskitamura614 5 лет назад +71

      @@andrewpenn1145 I sort of disagree with the Gluttony problem. The way I see it, there are "two kinds" of homunculus: the "sins of the body", driven by primal, somewhat beastly desires of the flesh, and the "sins of the mind", representing inherently human vices, not present in animals. Gluttony simply wants to consume everything, as can be seem by his power, disposition and lack of higher inteligence - he gets no other part in the story because he is only a tool. The same goes with Sloth. Lust, on the other hand, appears human-like and rational, but does not show any human desire, only the mindless want por pleasure - which she derives from inflicting pain and commiting evil acts. As such, the only possible justification for leaving Mustang to die and not killing him straight away is to have him suffer longer - a mistake that would cost her "life". Finally. the other 4 - Pride, Wrath, Envy and Greed - are all human-like in essence, if not in appearance. They act rationally, most of the time, and they all die expressing a desire to become human, to experience human relations and such. In the great scheme of things, Gluttony fullfilled his role, and his friendship with Lust is only expected, given their natures and desires. My two cents, anyway.

    throughout the series we find out that most homunclus' sins are somewhat twisted to humanity;
    greed could only be satisfacted with being respected by humans, not by taking from them;
    pride claimed to be better than humans but would rather escape into a human body than die a homunculus;
    envy said humans were stupid, but actually wanted to be a human himself...
    and so I believe that what Bradley hated the most about humans was that HE had his humanity denied. He was forced into becoming a homunculus (remember how much he likes choice? he didn't CHOSE to become a homunculus) it would fit with the other homunculus that we go deep down into the psyque, even the Father, in the end, wished to become one with Elric again, despite being way more powerful, his true intentions were not that of becoming a God, but of becoming human, and just like his creations, he completely misses the point by going the oposite way of "becoming human" when he removes his own emotions and make them into other homunculus.

    • @adnanilyas6368
      @adnanilyas6368 5 лет назад +35

      That's because the 7 homunculi represent, not the 7 deadly sins, but the underlying emotions of FATHER. Greed represents what Father wants. Pride represents what Father is proud about. Wrath reflects what makes Father furious. Etc.

    I always liked that aspect about King Bradley, his predisposed nature conflating with his false persona of being a loving husband and father, his conviction of being self-reliant makes him a compelling character and one of my favourites. Also I think the reason why he was never a true personification of Wrath is because he wasn't a pure homunculi like the rest of the Deadly Sins, but a human turned into one and furthermore I think he does genuinely care for his wife, if I'm remembering this correctly during his death scene he mention he does, but I could be wrong. He's kind of like The Boss from MGS 3. He may not have any real supernatural powers, but he's still one of the most powerful characters in the show and always has a notable presence in every scene he's in. In regards to Bradley being portrayed as innocent to lend legitimacy to Mustang's coup I think that's the equivalent exchange in overthrowing a tyrannical regime but letting the system of it remain. Because at the end of the day the land of Amestris is still Authoritarian and borderline fascist in the structure of its government.
    Had Mustang, General Armstrong, and the rest of the military branch overthrown the government to bring forth democracy or something like that, they could've branded Bradley as the tyrant he was. But as they decided to try and change Amestris through reform as a progressive dictatorship they have to keep up the lie that Bradley was a good man.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  6 лет назад +85

      That's an interesting way to interpret it. When focusing on the nature of Bradley's legacy and reputation, it feels unfair. Yet in your way of thinking, his structure remained. I haven't done much research on post-brotherhood lore but I assume that what was left behind will take the country in a much different direction, mind.

    • @tanngrisnr5076
      @tanngrisnr5076 6 лет назад +75

      Yeah, I assume Mustang would be a huge reformer but, the problem is that Amestris will end up in the same situation as the late Soviet Union. Where the Glasnost policy that opened a lot of the government's past deeds to scrutiny led to a lot of civil unrest and eventually a disorganized overthrowing of the Soviet government which led to the decaying state of the Russia we see today.
      So let's say that Mustang institues a social democracy and opens up the government in the same way Gorbachev did. What happens then when deep-digging journalists discover the same things Maes Hughes discovered, or word of the numerous blacksites where they made Philosopher's Stones leak out. It could create a second revolt, and perhaps a witchhunt of all alchemists.

      Aleczandxr To put it bluntly, the populace wouldn't have believed Bradley capable of the things he had done. It would have done nothing but create strife and weaken the rule of whoever came after him, leading to the complete collapse of the nation at a time when they still have hostile borders with the nations surrounding them. Say what you will of the villains, but they had a VERY good PR machine when it came to Bradley and his family, almost to the point of a personality cult. It was around the level of Franklin D. Roosevelt in popularity and trust. It would be more believable to have the senior staff be the scapegoats.

      @LarsisLP 6 лет назад +196

      First of all: i think it is obvious, that Bradley is meant to represent Hitler. His title of "Führer" is the same, that hitler gave to himself.
      While it is up to debate, most Historians agree, that Hitler was not a fan of christianity. Before taking office, he claimed to be a catholic to gain the trust of the (mainly christian) people. However, shortly after taking office his party took a great effort into reducing the christian influence over the population. While he may have believed in god, he disliked the strong influence religion had over the german people. They should believe in the power of the Führer and the Nazis. Nothing else.
      Again, there is no way to be 100% sure about this. But the majority of Historians agree on this. Statements he made in private meetings aswell as the fact that several members of his staff were openly antireligious support this.

    Absolutely intelligent and well argument expos, precise and unbiased.
    Clearly, King Bradley is the very embodiment of Nietzschean superman ; not in a physical sens, but in term point of view, morality and, how he is viewing the world.
    Like Zarathustra, in thus spoke Zarathustra, for King, it doesn't import to know if god exist or not, what import him, is rather to despise all the one that are using it as a tool in order to protect themselves morally, and justify their inaction, that create nothing, and so, forbid humanity to progress morally, technologically, politically or philosophically. What Bradley seems clearly to think.
    God can or cannot exist, in the end, all humans are free to act like they want, within their corporal, geographical and temporal boundaries. More, Nietzsche thought that true individuality, or the fact that we live for ourselves and more importantly, that we make choices base upon are free will, and not the will of other, or what they desire. True individuality, is not naturally consistent of your personality but rather an ideal to achieve. But that request many efforts to separate what we really are, and what society made us to be.
    If King respects and admire who is displaying assurances, is because he thinks that they have achieved some level of individuality, and so that they are capable of doing free choice, and so, if they are tenacious, it is not because they are blindly following others' ideals, dogmas or other indoctrination, but rather, their own choices.
    Bradley himself thinks that his major accomplishment lies upon the only choice he had never done.
    King is not a social Darwinist, even if he sees himself as superior to humanity, biologically speaking, the majority of humanity is weak for him, not because of how or where they were born, as he denies races, colors or all social constructions.
    They are weak because they don't defend real self ideal, but prefer to fight, kill and die for historical construction like nations as false that can be Amestris, for example.
    He never legitimated power upon the idea that, because they are born “weak” or socially disadvantage, humans must be dominate by the stronger. Rather, he thinks that, if they didn't bring themselves to revolt against their situation, and so fight for their own empowerment, they have no ambition and so, finally want to me dominate by who will be more capable than they to use and acquire power.
    Like Étienne de La Boétie wrote, in his “Discourse on Voluntary Servitude”, why men, why entire nations kneel before a single man like a king ? Because in the end, they prefer to be dominated and be dictated what they can do, and not use what they all possess ; a free will and the harsh responsibilities that lies with it.
    They are weak, not because they are naturally, biologically weak, but because they have chosen to remain like it, free of all responsibilities. So, they can lead the Ishval extermination war without thinking themselves responsible of this mass murdering.

    I'm glad to see an analytical video on my favorite characters from FMA, and a thorough on top that is always a treat.
    It's interesting seeing how a single character can be used by the author to act as the catalyst and the final stepping stone for many of the main protagonist. The clashing ideals of kingmanship or manner to rule between Ling And Bradley is a dynamic I would love for you to delve deeper on. The conflict between Lingreed and Bradley gave Ling the resolve he needed to take the first step into burdening the vessel of a true ruler, I mean he did show it through out the narrative but was of an greenhorn, I would say like an ore of a diamond or some rare ore, the backbone is there but still needs to be polished through experience. A typical author would of ended the use of a character like Bradley after that but Hiromu Arakawa finds far more use from her creation than a typical antagonist being a wall for a single character over come.
    Now enter Scar and his own character arc. I would say that most writers would probably have Kimblee be the resolve of Scar's arc, but that will only be for vengeance and revenge. Hiromu Arakawa, gave Scar the choice not of revenge but a means to overcome his wrath with a major center piece of which roots his very own, the manifestation of wrath itself, King Bradley. But at this point, which is one of my favorite idealism, the fight between two nameless men. Bradley was allowed for that moment to unburden the track that was laid out for him and truly act on his own behalf. Both men in their own right has lost, or relinquished their name, and at that moment they both were truly the core essence of who they truly are.

Like Bradley said and you pointing this out, I feel that if it wasn't Bradley, then the main characters wouldn't have reached the end.

    the most important detail of Wrath as a character, is because the virtuous opposite of Wrath is Patience, waiting for things to happen, and letting them happen as they will.
    Wrath is ultimately defeated because the sun (which represents god in alchemy) blinds him, which could be seen as a freak thing, fate randomly giving Scar an opening.
    even in his nice funny old man persona, we always see him moving, leaving, walking away. he never sits still.
    a man of ambition, freedom, movement, decisive, inpatient (not impatient in a way where he can't sit and be calm, but impatient in the fact that he always has to be making his own decisions, and detest the life laid out for him.
    he openly seems to admire humans that are taking choice into their own hands, even telling Pride that it might be time the humans take the reigns.
    Bradley so incredibly embodies his sin's namesake.

    My favorite moment of bradley was right before his final fight with scar. He seems so excited going into it, like he says, on the field of battle, nothing matters but you and your enemy. Combat, violence, battle, it's what makes him feel alive, the one thing that makes him him, it doesn't matter who's soul he has, his parentage, his rank, his age, none of it. He's free from those questions, those facts, morality, he is defined, he is freed, he is wrath.

    I've always noticed that the Homuncul all died ironic deaths, considering the sins that they embodied. Gluttony, the guy who wants to eat everything, was eaten himself. Pride was reduced to a baby, something with no pride in themselves, Lust was indirectly killed by a man she seduced and tried to kill, Sloth died by overworking himself until he literally fell apart, Envy died in the least enviable way possible as an object of pity, Greed died by selflessly sacrificing himself, and Wrath died from incurring the wrath of "god".

    Back then in middle school when I heard Bradley say that God didn't exist I was a bit offended, but honestly he makes a clear point concerning religion that's relevant today. Growing up in "Hislam" (Modern Islam) I always knew that what I was taught was contrived. I grew up in a household where my Mother and my siblings were constantly abused by our stepdad who wielded chauvinism with an iron fist. A religion that doesn't adhere to critical thinking and arriving at one's conclusions not based on their own judgment but following what one's parents have been caught doing.
    For many years I began to lose faith in God for these very reasons, it's no surprise that a lot of us have growing disdain for religion these days. One of the main problems with religion I believe is blind faith and not holding sovereignty over one's life like Bradley believed in. This is actually what true religion is and what true Islam (Way of life not religion) is, it is even the primary aim of education: to make self-governing individuals who're the steersmen/steerswomen of their lives.
    To go on a tangent, compulsory schooling and society at large really is no different from modern religion in that critical thinking nor self-governance isn't encouraged. Upon leaving high school I felt that there was something gravely missing in my life that I wasn't given by schooling, that of the ability to learn anything for myself and to stand on my own two feet as a volitional being, to not have to be held by the hand of religion, politics, peers, parents, government, or emotionally pleasant philosophies. This is the sole reason for why human beings can easily be controlled, coerced or manipulated. Through the lens of King Bradley, schooling did not cultivate in me to be able to craft my own future with my own two hands but to be a dependent thinker and human being. To not have to solely depend on parents, government, schooling, teachers, or authorities is the true mark of a self-directed individual.

      That I did when I was in middle school, however art is a form of communication like literature or speech. Now that I'm much older and have learned why I reacted the way I did I can no longer be offended by what anyone believes, as everyone has the right to make up their own mind. I've observed that many people in religious communities have such a high level of self-importance that they can't stand the opinions and beliefs of others which is antithetical to education, that to entertain a thought without necessarily believing nor denying it.

    I would say that he didn't by pass equivalent exchange. If you account for all of the suffering he went through in his childhood. All of the decision hes was forced to make when that very concept is one that he hated. In keeping with the theme of all of the homuculus wanting something that only a human can have, I would he truly lacked free will which is why he was so stern against humans that wasted theirs. And his wrath was his way of expressing that frustration because he was only allowed to fight humans as one created solely to lead a nation created for war.

      ebible fellowship I would say am on. Just cause he would have the ranged advantage

    • @astrangeone
      @astrangeone 6 лет назад +3

      That's interesting. He seems to treasure his wife (the ability to choose/have free will), and his base ideas are "If you want it, you will do everything in your power to take it." Which seems like a critique on humanity as a whole. (Most humans waste their free will.)
      This was a man who was solely created to lead a warlike nation. Literally his whole life was determined for him as soon as he was born. He was put into the program (looked like intensive military training) and when he was created (injected with the Stone - which was Father's wrathful souls/personalities), he also had to follow that plan...

    I believe one of the reasons he hates humanity is that most of them has the coice of fredom their entire lives, yet in his opinion, utterly wastes this choice by never truly making use of this. And in some cases, they make the coice of letting religion chose the way they live for them.

    I think him being remembered as a symbol of peace after death despite representing war and conflict in life IS equivalent exchange, and it's the dirt on his grave that utterly defeats him and all he stood for. A man who brought violence and pain in life brings the opposite in death.

    All homunculi in brotherhood died according to Dante's inferno.
    Envy committed suicide
    Lust is defeated by the fiery passions of a man
    Gluttony is swallowed by pride
    Greed is betrayed
    And wrath incurs the fury of God
    It's a very poetic anime

    Great video, as usual, Aleczandxr!
    Personally, I always thought that Führer King Bradley was kind of underrated among many villains, or even characters at all. I wish, we've got more of him, before his "reveal", because I didnt get used to him, when the twist came.
    I think, one of the most interesting aspects of him, which you've mentioned, was the choice of his wife. It made him human, and also very interesting, that "this" choice made him proud. i think it is one of the very little details, which you could technically ignore, but would lose a lot him as a character, because it tells a lot how he sees everything else in his life.
    But besides that,he's also a badass, with very enjoyable action at the end of the series. Which is always a good thing.
    Btw: Great use of "River in the desert" in the video! Fits Bradley!
    I also assume, the fact that Bradley was seen as a Martyr at the end, was more a political move. Yes, it's not a fitting end for him, compared to many others, but announcing he was a monster & evil, would've certainly led to more fights in the country, maybe even to a civil war.
    It's also great to be reminded how good FMA:B was, bc when I've watched it, I was in a ugly phase in my life, which was a time, where it was difficult to enjoy things. That's why I value this video a lot!
    Like I've said at the beginning-
    Great video!
    PS: Little trivia information: In germany his title isnt Führer King(bc obvious reasons), but Field Marshal General.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  6 лет назад +1

      Field Marshal Bradley.. I kinda like it.
      Yeah, I totally understand why he was proclaimed as a hero. It was necessary for prosperity of the land. I just thought it was interesting in terms of Bradley's fate. Anyways, glad you find the video valuable!

    tbh wrath represents how anger grows out of control when its sealed in. considering wrath's arc it fits much better than thinking of wrath as just lashing out due to anger on the surface level

  • @sullivandmitry1416
    @sullivandmitry1416 3 года назад +3

    Bradley is the perfect representation of wrath, because he’s hypocritical. Angry people don’t care if they come off as hypocritical they are just pissed and want the others to be wrong. He’s not just a dude running around punching holes in walls cause he’s annoyed. He hates everyone and everything, but yet understands his human origins. A Homunculus, but was a human first. He’s forced to help his “father” but doesn’t really care too much about it succeeding. He’s going to do everything he can to make it succeed so that he can have an outlet for his anger but in the end he could care less.
