Mercedes AMG GT 63: More than an SL with a roof.

- Almost two years since reinventing the @MercedesBenz SL into the @Mercedes-AMG #SL, MotoMan drives the reason for that reinterpretation, the all new @mbusa AMG GT. Specifically, the 577 HP Mercedes AMG GT 63 and learns this is far more than a case of a Mercedes AMG SL with a roof, rather, the 2024 Mercedes AMG GT is many small changes that amount to much more than the total sum

This will go down in history as one of the most beautiful cars ever made
Legit laughed when you popped into the back seat. This is why you're one of the best!
My pleasure!
I need one , what a beautiful car ❤
To me this is an important car. Making it more than "an SL with a roof" is something AMG has to do in order to be taken seriously. The GT has to be much more of a performer than the portly SL.
+1 .. Agreed. .. No question. The SL is an expensive Hair Dresser's car... Mistress car. .. Cheers, M/S .. Vail.
Except it's not much more of a performer. Same weight, same powertrain, same chassis, same engine. This reviewer and you are clueless. The SL was designed by AMG to be the roadster version of this car. Go ahead and ask them. That's why you won't see roadster GTs anymore like we used to. Man you people commenting on youtube video are so damn clueless. The SL is portly? It's the same weight you idiot 😂😂😂
The GT is heavier than the SL. If you could read between the lines a little better rather than flat out misinterpret it you would've caught that.. I guess I should expect failure from a clueless RUclips commenter such as you.
Bravo MotoMan.
Technical and business insights mixed with beautiful shapes, sounds and joy in the finer things automotive.
My pleasure!
It’s truly a beautiful car. Engineering and design team have created a superb car. Now let me tell you why it won’t be the sales winner they hope it will be. You order a GT63 and when it arrives, they announce a GT43 at a much lower price but you can option it to look exactly like a 63. Then they announce a GT35 and you can option that to also look like a GT63. The problem is AMG marketing has no respect for their customers. Don’t say they wouldn’t do it because they certainly did it with the GT53 4 door. They just don’t have a firm policy to differentiate the models enough. On the other hand, so far, the G550 looks nowhere near a G63 that looks nowhere near a G63 square. And because of this lack of marketing respect to customers, potential buyers go with a 911. The resale value of a GT63 is nowhere near what you will get for a 911. Porche respect their customers and its model offering without overlap. Buy a Porsche, it’s what you dream of owning anyways with no downside.
Man those shifts sounds awesome and rough!!
I do love this car, especially as a more refined alternative to a 911. Though weight needs to come down...even just 4k lbs be more acceptable (but still very heavy)
Sheesh, in the same generation we've got a 2 ton Corvette and an this thing at 4300lbs. I was never one of those guys who complained that everything was too heavy, but now I'm starting to drift.
Crazy weight gain is something all enthusiasts should be concerned about. Easiest way to improve a car in every aspect - handling, accel, braking, consumables, fuel economy, etc.
I remember AMG was getting involved in the SL redesign to make it AWD, soft top, and LIGHTER... Its way heavier than previous gen, and this GT is heavier also.. I weighed my 2018 SL63 at 4067 lbs with pretty much a full tank of gas.. so say the car was 4000 lbs... now a few hundred pounds heavier for both the SL and GT.. I have noticed a few used 2022 SL63 on the market now for 70k less than new.. Looks like they are dropping like a rock. Might wait for a used GT - in 18 to 24 months or so as the car market softens..
None of us like it, but remember, EVERY OEM in EVERY country has a new partner in the engineering and design departments: The Government.
@@MotoManTV Oh no I didn't forget. Don't get me started on politics, I doubt RUclips would let the comment go through anyway...
@@MotoManTV I understand maunfacturers are HEAVILY constricted by governmental regulations. But no one made MB use the SL platform for their 911 killer (LOL). Just like no one made MB design a 2+ ton C 63 AMG (yikes). Something is very wrong with the decision makers at Mercedes-Benz.
It will be interesting to see if they make a track focused version, perhaps a new Black Series at some point. Hopefully they'll be able to reduce some of that weight.
or even a GT R that's able to give a GT3 some pressure if done right without going overboard.
@@iceberg4736 a new GTR would be very exciting. The last one was great 🔥
Merc wouldnt miss the chance to make extra money on special-special model :)
In speaking with both the engineers and the man running AMG, they definitely plan to follow the 911 strategy of bringing out new flavors over the years - much like they did with the last gen. When I brought up the idea of another AMG GT Black, I was not laughed out of the room
@@MotoManTV Fantastic news!
LOVE the redesign from almost every aspect but it would still be hard to choose NEW over a similar $$ 911 from a residual value POV and that's where I think its biggest competition lays - nice examples of the previous models are going to approach $100k less, and its hard not to see incredible value then in the older model at 50-60% discount.
As always an accurate analysis‼️ 16:32
Stunning
+1 Says the video Producer taking delivery of a 'Have it Your Way" spec'ed 2024 Porsche GT3. ... Such a nice spec! ,, So nicely spec'd ..
If I was in your tax bracket. ..... Drive safe.
Cheers, M/S .. Vail, Colorado
FANTASTIC corner of the world . . . Say hello to Pazzo's for me . . .
Love watching you man.. very underrated channel
This is the ultimate weekend getaway and daily driver Benz. The AWD and luggage space make it the way to go. Very hard to find something that ticks as many boxes.
That gamer dashboard is a big you. I wish kids would stop designing cars for adults.
This is first time hearing of or seeing this car.
And what do you think?
@flvyu I don't know, after 7 months I still can't afford it! 😂
Love it
Motoman, well I do have many friends with 991s, 992s and yes. The storage is not great. One of the things I LOVE about my 718 Spyder is I can go get groceries in it using both the front and rear trunks. Your GT3 Touring still out rocks my Spyder though. At least on the performance scale. The looks, not so much! Have a great day. Stay safe out there in this crazy world we're living in.
Dios mio ---- It's impressive how they move things here and there for a so noticeble different experience . Very informative channel !
Sorry to inform you (current 992 Carrera T owner) I took my 991.1 with a friend in 2018 with TWO SETS OF GOLF CLUBS on a 24 hour round trip for a weekend of golf. We had ample room for the clubs and luggage in the frunk.
I think he has a gt3.
There is no video showing golf clubs fitting in the frunk of the 991 or 992. Show your proof, please.
@@chrisfranks6867 He does, but there should not be a difference in storage capacity.
It should be called a SL... this is not the heritage of the AMG GT... they got rid of the dual clutch, added a 9 speed vs. the 7...no longer considered a mid engine, and the biggest hit, they added almost 1000lbs. Not a track car anymore...more daily driver, like a SL
Adding the back seat makes this and the SL less attractive! And the back seat is useless. Beautiful setting and awesome review.
Hope you had a good time MM. Glad you managed to get to S.Nevada mountains, I´ve been in those roads quite some years ago and it´s a nice drive if you can keep the pace and don´t catch traffic. The car seems more grown up than last AMG-GT but knowing is based on the new SL makes me want the GT to be like this and the SL to have its own platform.... too much to ask, i know. A AMG-GT "T" would be the right spot in my opinion given it will bring the same engine minus some weight, which is always welcomed.
Mercedes Accounting:
“Request denied. You will get a 4 cylinder GT43 and you will like it!”
For me the open top is a must so SL it is.
there are some used 2022 models with 80k off sticker price out there now.. dropping like a stone.. I dont expect a used 2022 SL63 will get under 100k for quite some time though, probably not a bad time to look at one Im thinking.. most of the $$ drop is in already. Poor buggers that bought them new lol
@@twfinc6855 I am happy with my 2017 SL 63 - weighs less, hard top and sounds better 😎
@@Hans-Larsson ya I sold mine though when covid hit... : ( never looked at a new gen yet but might take a used one for a drive next spring... Im in canada no way Im paying $260k for a new one..
@@Hans-Larssonfyi, took my 2018 to the drag strip.. ran a 11.43 at 126 mph... not sure if you ever did a run but just so you know how fast it is in case you ever wondered
Wish I would have known you were here in Spain just about an hour away from me. You could have hopped straight from that pig into a 150 horsepower Miata RF! (Which, I might add, your videos helped steer me towards -- I mean, I can fit a whole pie in the boot!). :D
Great review of the Merc, though I still want to see days and days of content on your new Porsche!
Love that blue on tan…gorgeous.
Like to see it in Hell Green !!
Great video! How does the different driveline effect the handling and feel compared to the previous gen?RWD with a dual clutch transaxle has become AWD with a MCT longitudinal automatic.
Great video as per usual. Would this compare to a bmw M8 comp ?
2nd on the online 6 tuned to 500 hp, rear drive
First thing to change are those diamond cut wheels.
Well, another problem to solve, the Aston Vantage is close enough with similar motor and better looks and more exclusivity for around same bucks, plus or minus! Great review as always but if I have 160,000 you likely have 195,000 and nicer car with better resale!
Very good video, love your comparison to 911s. Mutual friend, Joe in East Texas.
Gorgeous vehicle ,beautiful color ,that engine sounds sublime !
What a machine !
If only I could afford it ,I only have one kidney left sold the first one for a new Bimmer !
Ausgezeichnet AMG !
Bro I want that car so bad I'm definitely gonna get one on my 23rd birthday 🌝
I wonder if they'll do a widebody version again.
5:34 the things you do for us, M.
In Sweden the base AMG GT 63 is about 5% cheaper than the base SL 63.
Such a nice car. A worthy rival for Porsche 992
Seeing you sitting in that back seat gave me claustrophobia.
They had to airlift me out of there . . .
That new GT is beautiful, love your content MotoMan, wanna trade weather? lol
HA . . . Already did my 'time' in crap weather for most of my life:)
Машина топ
🎉🎉🎉
Maybe the MBAMG aero guys should talk to the AMG F1 aero guys
I vote for the Clubsport.
AMG has lost touch with what a GT was supposed to be or the bean counters took over!? The new GT is just under 800 pounds more than the last GT! WTF!? Gone is the fun back roads spirited drives as now just call it a AMG Pig! No matter what AMG say it is a 4 seat(yes I know the back seat is useless like an SL) hard top SL. Sorry to see AMG no longer builds fun cars, now just Pigs with hips. I love driving the 2019 GT-S and favorite GT-R.
Gorgeous car and I’m a bmw guy
What in pricing like in the US? In Germany base price for the GT 63 is 188k Euros before any options.
Just leave a comment to help the algorithm for the most amazing channel for car enthusiasts community. 😁
Great review, how was headroom? Would someone 6'5" fit?
Lovely kit!
SL sales are horrible, for a handful of different reasons. MB clearly couldn't ditch the jumbo iPad so close to protection, but they can bring down the price to a point where people will buy them.
Great review as always #yourthebest
Thank you, sir!
@@MotoManTV 🤜🤛
Love the lighter GT53 idea. Merc uses the crazy I4 for performance cars and I6 for luxury applications. They should reverse that.
You could imagine I pitched my idea directly to the man now running AMG, who was there. I made the full Supreme Court case with this as the focus: The R&D is already paid for, the 53 series engines are designed with unrealistically tightening EU emissions in mind and can be further tuned and last but not least, the 2WD version of this system already exists.
i wonder which is better between this and an audi R8
Had to laugh my arse off - I hate golf too😂. As usual, MM is on point! For the life of me, I just don’t understand why MB can’t work their magic with their AMG F1 skunk works team to build a Porsche 911 beater! SMH! Great car/great vid. Cheers/B
So other than the back looking better on this car and it being a coupe, what is the difference between this and the SL? Same horsepower, same torque, similar chassis, same weight, same interiors. If anything thisll likely be the cheaper version of the SL
its looks a LOT like a Jag. I like it... but wonder if it has a bit more room now than last gen.. I didnt fit, knees touched the dash im 6'5" tall.. will check one out at my local merc dealership when they have one.
Something not covered in the episode - some of the reminiscent design themes you see here and there in this car. Yes, I mentioned the rear that harkens to a 992. However, there are times from the profile you see you BMW 8 series and then other times from the front 3/4, you see AM. Most of this came from spending a further day with the car after the shoot.
so it's closer to a carrera 4s than a turbo s?
The SL compromises everything for the lack of a roof. Somebody here said the current SL is a "hairdressers car" and I wouldn't argue with that. And that backseat is a punchline to a package shelf joke. 🤣
2:31 it kinda looks like an F-type.
A 43 model of this car will be cool
I dunno George. I owned an AMG and a C8 Corvette. None of the school kids during recess near my home cared about the AMG when I drove by. But they all line up to see and hear my C8. Methinks the tide has turned and the GT is for the old money while the C8 is the young one now.
Funny you say, Roman of @TFLCar and I had this same experience at last year's Chicago Auto Show:
ruclips.net/video/GkFbT7fhUGw/видео.htmlsi=mc-sSrwAxZpgPXjp
That said, out on the road, I am seeing changes in the types of drivers of Corvettes, but there is still a difference.
WOW. You buy cars to impress school children? Maybe you should buy a Van and a bag of candy !
@@allangilbert5865 Clearly you don't have kids. When it comes to cars, kids are the toughest critics. Why don't you show up at your local school during recess in a van, slide open the door and offer a bag of skittles and see what they do to you. Moron.
Awesome review. Any idea of the order time?
Knowing how long Mercedes takes to bring cars to America, I'd be shocked if anyone in the states got this car before summer 2024.
Thinking late Spring 2024.
When do they go on sale in USA?
I hope that Mercedes-AMG takes your GT53 and GT53 Clubsport idea into consideration ✨🇿🇦
Let's just say there were folks inside of AMG that didn't laugh at my idea.
@@MotoManTV😂... At least some of them have vision and passion for the car. Please tell them to use the nameplates of GT53 and GT53 Clubsport and also, we are waiting for the GT R and GT R PRO.
After you've seen it in person. It lacks the presence of the original amg-gt. The original looks much more exotic
A CPO final edition S63 amg or this 🧐
What would cars be without the active rear spoiler? 😏💙👌🏾
Estimated to be from £99k in the UK…to c. £163k for the GT63 and yes, undercutting the SL. X options obviously….so add another £30/40k!!!!
When I think of hips, I usually think of an Aston
And from certain angles, do you see AM in this car - also a bit of BMW 8er in the side profile.
MotoMan do you know what type of shakes this car uses? Does it use double wishbones?
Which is the bigger daddy between the SL and GT??
It is beautiful, but so expensive.
Is LC500 a better option?
For long-term reliability and resale value absolutely.
Don’t like this new one. That grill is way way too big. Also that chrome detail behind the front wheels needs to go. And then almost 2 tons 😱. Never thought I’d say that but I would go 911 instead. Really really miss the old AMG GT. Looked so much better.
911 Turbo S any day over this but this is a great car too
Doesn't look nearly as eventful as the outgoing GT. Abandoned is the long hood XKE like homage
We need the convertible
4300 pounds is insane
You and that chubby Brit chap are the best car guys on the innertubes...
cheaper? no. Hell no. The sl is a 'gt' and this gt is more of a 'supercar' ...right?
More than an SL... Isn't that exactly what's wrong? I don't think the problem is the AMG GT though... the problem is the SL... or the name and tradition it should carry... More appropriate should be to categorize the SL as "Less than an AMG GT without a roof".
When showing the rear from a distance it actually looks like a 911.
Porsche, "We're flattered Mercedes used the 911 as the benchmark. They just need to cut 800 lbs from the new GT"
would the 4 door be a more practical option?
Yes obviously
a comment...great video.
Vielen Dank!
MotoMan,
What do you mean by "no storage" in the GT3? A 25" Samsonite bag easily fits in the frunk of my Cayman GTS 4.0 and the rear trunk can accommodate some backpacks. You also have the backseats in the GT3, so I do not see the problem.
I agree, you can fit a few bags or even a fat girl into the back of a GT3 and still have a great time driving it..Dont tell my wife that I told you this🤫
@@thetruthspeaker1978 I once fit two skinny nurses in the front seat, but I am not married🙃
I thought the same thing going in, however I learned the hard way, my spec has the CF seats, which drastically limits access to the otherwise usable rear compartment. The frunk is surprisingly cavernous, which I knew from years of driving 911s . . .
Problem is, if you buy this car, it'll devalue like a ROCK the first 2-3 years. This makes the 911 the better buy IMO. Its a beauty but the AMGs do NOT hold their value at ALL
F-Type R p575 AWD was wayyyyyy more luxurious, visceral & fun than this 63. I test drove them both. The 63 sounds like chili farts 💨
Plus, you can turn off the AWD on the Jag
The F-Type is lovely, but it's going out of production soon which is a shame 😰
@@PRESIDENT_RANDALL_MARSH It really is, such a gem of an engine. I wonder why more manufacturers don't go with supercharged engines, the instant response, low end grunt and sound are just brilliant 👍
I miss the Amg GT. Mercedes has the CLE, no need for a rear seat.
FYI, calling the YT algorithm a btich won't help either.
Why do car guys always stand in front of the car they're talking about... 😂😂😂
It's too damn heavy at 4300 lbs... But beautiful though... 5:41 you're 6 feet tall, right? Would have loved to hear you comment on how appropriate the back seat would be for kids.
2nd!!!! ❤😂
The AMG GT range has gone...
- 2 seater 2 door
- 2 seater 2 door convertible
- 4 seater 4 door
- 4 seater 2 door
...just in case anyone might think there was a plan before just copying from porsche.
The OG sports car could have been an icon by now if they'd stuck with it.
With this, not only is merc feeding of 911 scraps, but its competing with own new CLE coupe too.
cheaper bentley?
Good way of looking at it . The Bentley is 5000 lbs.
585 not 577
Good try Mercedes!! I would still get the cheapest 911 just because it's a 911😂😂😂
The GT55 without the batteries weighs under 4000lb, not bad. Still dissapointing, no dual clutch, no proper mid-engine, no transaxle, no rwd, no supercar interior, still heavy, boring terrible interior due to a lack of buttons n screens in the wrong place. If u look at it as a coupe its amazing, but u cant compare it to the last AMG-GT which was a real supercar. The old AMG-GTR is the best looking car ever, & this looks extremely good aswell
