Why GREAT Wine Regions Are Near Water - It's NOT What You Think!

  • Almost every major wine region in the world is located next to or near a body of water. Some examples include the Mediterranean Sea in Tuscany, the Mosel River in Germany, and the Douro River in Portugal. But have you ever wondered why? If you're learning about wine for wine educational purposes, such as WSET or Court of Masters, this is a concept you need to understand. The reason is NOT irrigation, unlike what many people think. No, the real reason is much more complex. You see, water changes temperature at a slower rate than air. This allows the body of water to have a moderating effect on the vines nearby, making sure that they never get too hot or too cold. Because while vines can handle temporary changes in climate, they need to have the same average temperature from year to year. This is where bodies of water can help. In addition, bodies of water can create fog and help cool vines down, and breezes keep vines dry. Rivers can reflect sunlight onto vines for warmth. And the moderating effect helps extend the growing season, which vines and grapes love. Finally, some areas were historically created near water so people could transport the wines on boats before the advent of planes, trains, and cars.
