I just got Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies from the library! The rest of my cozy fantasy/fairytale-esque/fallish TBR is I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons, Neverending Story, For the Wolf, Princess Bride, The Bear and the Nightingale, Assistant to the Villain, One Dark Window, and Spinning Silver. Thank you for helping me discover some of these!
Crazy that this year is the 20th anni of Howl's Moving Castle 😭🩷🩵 Ghibli movies are so cozy and def give fall vibes!!! I personally liked the movie more than the book, but book-Howl's drama is absolutely fantastic 😂
It’s funny that you say, you associate fairytales with fall, because I’ve always been a seasonal reader! In fall, I love to read, cozy fantasy and witchy books, in winter I read more traditional fantasy, in spring I’ll read more contemporary fiction, and in summer I like to read romance!
Just finished The Spellshop and I enjoyed every moment! My daughter read it first and loved it, too. I can recommend The Fairy Godmother by Mercedes Lackey. It's the first in a really good fairy tale retelling/cozy series by an established fantasy author. I particularly love the first two books. For a contemporary take try the Enchanted Inc. series by Shanna Swendson. Different and fun! Thanks for all your videos, I quite enjoy them.
I"m still trying to wrap my head around the definition of "cozy fantasy" but an older one that comes to mind that is a fairytale retelling is Spindle's End by Robin Mckinley. She has several amazing fairy tale retellings, but I remember in this one the magic is very wrapped up in cute cozy homey things, like spindles and teakettles and other every day kitchen items etc. I always loved that one. The stakes are higher than starting a bookstore, but the twist in the end brings it back to the small and cozy homey life. I highly recommend all her books, she always has very rich and sensory descriptions and interesting magic. Another fun one is Chalice, which the magic is all about honey and it's healing properties.
@@catsandbats77 She has such great ones. Have you ever read Deerskin? It's a heavy trigger warning because of what happens to the heroine in the first part of the book, but her healing process afterward is so beautiful, I still love it.
Magus' Bride I've found meanders less and has longer story arks as it goes on, but also since as we've gotten deeper into the story, we've gotten more characters, so were have more storylines and characters now that we have to keep track of.
You are such a phenomenal RUclipsr. Thank you for all the work that you do for your channels. I graduated college in 2019. As an English major I was so excited to finally read for fun again post graduation. However, I spent so much of my intellectual career reading stuffy old texts and dense works. I couldn’t even remember what genre I loved. Finding your channel all those years ago reminded me of my love fantasy. So thank you for that. 🥹❤️
Emily McCosh, RUclipsr & Artist, plus she self publishes all her own books is so underrated and does a wonderful job at writing cozy unique fantasy stories
I’ll always suggest SL Rowland for cozy fantasy. Sword and Thistle and Cursed Cocktails are very similar to Legends and Lattes and Bookshops and Bonedust. Instead of coffee, it’s cocktails. And the main character in Sword and Thistle is a blood magic user but his magic causes him pain to use. Love SL Rowland’s writing. He uses all 5 senses
I loved the characters in Ancient Magus' Bride, but I quit watching the anime because it did feel like a romance? And she's a minor, and I just couldn't really get past the power disparity and age gap. But maybe I misunderstood the themes. So maybe I'll give the manga a shot, because I thought everything else was great. The dog episode broke my heart into a million pieces in a good way, so I could give it another go for sure.
The first arc at least (which is what I’ve read so far) definitely has an element of him sort of learning human emotions, which involves learning to care, but I did see a thread on reddit that the anime pushes the “romance” element. Maybe in future volumes it becomes more romantic, but in the first nine or ten volumes that I read, it’s more about companionship. Her depression and wanting to live is definitely a major part of the manga regardless; and yes, oh my gosh, the part with the dog is so sad 😭 Anyway, if you give it another go with the manga, hopefully you enjoy it! ☺️
@@ebnovels I definitely will! So glad you mentioned it because I had no idea, and I think about the anime from time to time wondering if it's worth stomaching the weird relationship to enjoy the immersion lol. My manga TBR is getting ridiculous and I'm here for it. I added Skip & Loafer and A Sign of Affection this year too. I would say Ancient Magus' Bride is definitely more fall though.
I highly recommend you or anyone else looking for a cozy fantasy tries A Turn of Light by Julie Czerneda. It is so cozy and atmospheric and descriptive with great characters and a great story.
Oh my goodness!! I checked out your recommendation and I realized I have read it and LOVED it!! I am so glad to rediscover it. ❤ For those who haven’t, this is definitely cozy and worth a read 🙌🏻
Haha, you’re good! I meant that it’s not some sort of sex slavery plot. Given the word “bride” and the fact that she “sells herself” I didn’t want to give people the wrong impression 😅
When the topic is cosy fantasy the books are always the same!! I'm tired of earing howls moving castle and legends and lattes... I read these books and didn't like them. Be original!! ❤

Ohh, that seems like such a nice way to read more broadly too! :D
Where i live, a bookstore chain teamed up with a tea-coffee chain and now we actually have tea shops inside bookstore.

YES! thank you for making these lists! I am so happy & ready for fall 🍂 🎃!
I found Witch Hat on the comics manga side of the kindle subscription. I’m looking forward to reading more of it.

@6:00 GRRM coined the term I believe. Architects & gardeners, vs plotters & pantsers.

I liked Bookshops heaps more than Legends.
So many good options!

Great Video!
Hi :) Can we have a mermaid/siren/ocean themed recs video?

Love this, just the season for it all
It’s actually a piece from the Witcher 3 video game! It’s called The Tree When We Sat Once 🎵

I’ve taken a screenshot so that I can try to remember it for later :D
