"There are not more than 100 people in the world who truly hate the Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they perceive to be the Catholic Church."

Also, we don't believe in predestination as Catholics anyway, so, yes, it is overly presumptuous to say anyone, on any matter or topic, is in anyway predestined to do or not do something.

We preach about such things because if the direction of our country's policies don't change, we soon won't be able to address the issues of poverty, war, cancer, etc because our Church will be forced into the underground.

Father John Hollowell. Mister John Hollowell I’m a born again Christian and I believe that we need to evangelize gays and lesbian that the can be save by Jesus Christ. This issue is very important not to let them think that it is right because God create man and woman.
Let them know wat the word of God say.
Treated them with love and if they do not accept just pray for them. Prayers much prayers we need today. The entire world is going bad.
Repent means come back to God. And do not follow ANY man teaching. Follow Jesus and study your bible.

      Chris
      1. Whether governments "CREATE those conditions," if you mean "create poverty, war, and the like," isn't the point. The point is that the Church is at risk of losing her voice on these issues; in other words, if you meant "creates the country's political course," then there's no clear disagreement between you.
      2. Where does Fr. Hollowell seem to look up to politicians as gods and protectors?

Father John Hollowell Those of us in “progressive” cities are already underground. For an example of our local priests, please look up Fr Thomas Faucher sentenced 21Dec 2018. Many local “Catholics,” including Mayor Bieter, are still supporting Faucher! The nature of his crimes is Satanic and truly frightening. Bishop Christiansen said he feels “sad.” Do you call that leadership?
If he cared about Catholics, he would be raining down fire and brimstone on predator priests who are on line looking for “children to rape and kill.” Everyone here is carrying on as though this is normal for them. I now realize the “child porn” is produced by priests and seminarians. They rape infants to death for fun, people. Let that sink in.

Thanks for putting your sermons up, father. You really raise the bar for a lot of the other novus ordo priests, and you're also giving the faithful what they so desperately need to stay grounded in that place of both truth and compassion. What you're sharing here is very helpful. I would hope this is shared to an adult group, though, as some families like to keep their younger children from hearing about "homosexuality" or even "same-sex attraction" until they're at an age where they can properly discuss these topics at home.

My point is we know that sex in certain situations is wrong, but we try to mask our moral judgment towards such sex by saying "Oh, we don't like that stuff over there in the shadows because it is simply shady business. God forbid we actually say what we all know - namely that sex actually has a purpose and can be misused." We still hand out scarlet letters, they just look different.

I have never been able to confess my sins about homosexuality..raised like an orphan I always had to find my own way...the first time I sinned I was a teenager, I met a transgender who her/his look deceived me , I was very submissive to her/his demands ; except at each tries I couldn’t be penetrated; I felt something was wrong and pushed her/him away...I moved on and accepted the fact that Penetration was impossible....but continued with the touching until I turned 24 ...i was never attracted to it it was just my only way of release...it always been difficult for me to find a friend or a girlfriend growing up , but since 24 I realized it was never really what I desired or wanted ..I was lonely and couldn’t find love ...but I never stopped praying for Gods forgiveness..as I simply wish to find my own but the right way...this speech was very enlightening and along I decided to share my story and confess ...thank you..

you are right...Even for a heterosexual person, all of them have an attraction to a certain type of person: blonde hair, blue eyes, short, small, chunky, asian, etc. That attraction doesn't necessarily make it GOOD for you...if someone thinks they CANNOT LIVE without sex, then they have to look within themselves and see lust, not love.

You have absolutely 100% missed the entire thesis of the homily. In fact, the thesis was completely the opposite of what you have stated. The thesis is that just because you are attracted to something or someone that DOES NOT mean you will act on it. The liberal media elites are the ones who say that human persons can't help but act on their attractions.

Life is unfair, especially those suffering from SSA. Either suffer the difficulty of never being able to consumate their urges, or give in to their disordered lusts and violate God's law. However, if they look deeply into themselves and figure out why they have these urges in the first place, they MAY be able to overcome them and live chaste, happy lives. I met a man a few years ago who overcame SSA and changed his orientation. He is now married and has a young child. God works in many ways

God Bless you Father. Thank you for showing us that book, 'Faith at the Edge.' Just wonderful.
I have adult children who question me and are troubled because they know people who struggle with this. They worry about their souls. What does the Catholic church teach on this subject?
All I could answer is, "It is a mortal sin to engage in any sexual perversion because it violates the 6th Commandment of God, Adultery."
But I did not realize that there is a distinction, and we have to be careful. So now I know!
Father gave us this EXCELLENT homily. Same Sex Attraction (SSA) is NOT a sin!!!! One is still intact and chaste. This is all important. There is a distinction between the "attraction" and the "act."
The mortal "sin" against the 6th commandment is acting on the attraction and actually physically engaging.
Unlike Protestant public "leaders," the Catholic church does NOT condemn anyone who struggles with SSA. This is a misconception.
We see the root cause of anger and despair by those who struggle with this towards Christianity at large, but this ERROR is coming from Protestants, not Catholics!!!
But just because the Catholic church does NOT condemn SSA, does NOT mean its OK to engage and act on those feelings! Its a temptation from the ancient enemy. A test of our will.
He is correct. Jesus said "I give you My Commandments and if you keep my commandments you will remain in my love and these commandments lead to your joy."
It is very simple. Just don't ACT on it. If you do, be sure to CONFESS this mortal sin right away and sin no more. Make amends. Do penance. AND NEVER receive our Lord in the Holy Eucharist if one is in a state of mortal sin!!!!
Confession of all sin FIRST for purification! Follow God's laws and you can't go wrong! What is so hard about that? Its not. We are human and very fallible. All of us share that weakness.
So, bottom line, Christ Himself by His will thru the Catholic church, provides the remedy. No other institution on earth is authorized to provide this directly from our Lord. There is only one, true, holy and apostolic Church of Christ and it is the Catholic Church!

Just because being gay and adultery is trendy in the 21st century does not mean that God needs to change his word to appeal to sinners. I feel very much the same way, thank you for arguing in a clear and coherent manner. I’d argue that riskful behavior isn’t necessarily immoral, so I think it would be wrong to questions someone’s morals for being homosexual or for eating junk food. And even if we assume that something other than social pressure was responsible for the high suicide rates, it would be a tough argument to make to say that having them stop having gay sex would lower suicide rates instead of increase them.

As I posted below - so it is okay to be intolerant, as long as you are intolerant of the intolerant...then the REALLY scary question is "who decides what tolerance looks like" because it seems that depending on how you answer that question, one could be given a green light to be as intolerant as one chooses - as long as the "governing body" has declared the target to be "intolerant"

as to "many factors at play" that is vague enough to prevent one from actually having to articulate one's beliefs at all. The Church doesn't say that "homosexuals are capable of leading heterosexual lives"
The Church says we all have attractions that we experience. The only place that one properly acts on sexual attraction is within the bond of marriage.
A hormonal teenager can't act on any sexual attractions they might feel because they aren't married
A priest can't act on any sexual attractions he might feel because he is not married
A married man can't act on attraction to roughly 3.5 billion women etc.

The following quote stuck out in my mind:
"On the other hand, the left, tells me I am predestined, also, to act on my inclinations."
Is the reverse also true? The left and right both presume that if someone is inclined to be straight, that they are "predestined" to have relationships with members of the opposite sex. Is it always inappropriate to presume which sex someone should have a relationship with based on their inclinations, or does this only apply to homosexuals?

  • @FatherJohnHollowell
    @FatherJohnHollowell  12 лет назад +2

The # of times I've answered this question is staggering. Certain passages in Leviticus are simply cultural laws that we obviously need not worry about anymore. Others are definitely still applicable.
The question - who helps us decide which no longer apply? As a Catholic, the answer is easy - it is the Church.
One of the reasons the Church continues its teachings on sexual issues is because homosexual sex isn't JUST in Leviticus, it is also in the New Testament as an abomination as well.

I'm not being ambiguous, I'm simply stating that I subscribe neither to Hobbes' view of the necessity of an absolute authority, nor to the belief that a lack of any authority is the answer. We certainly DO benefit from acknowledging where our laws and our rights come from, and as I've said that source is a rational consideration of the implications of our actions. Neither our laws nor our rights come from any deity or mythology, and as long as secularism stands, that will remain the case.

Bless us Lord for we are all sinners and we too often think or are encouraged to think with our earthly faculties and not our heavenly spiritual faculties.... in Jesus’ Most Holy Name, Amen. Thank you Father John and may your courage encourage the flock to recognize and know the sound of His voice, our Good Shepherd! Blessings!!!

There was nothing theological about the words I used, but I’ll get to your question. My morals come from rational consideration of the consequences of my actions, and the understanding that my freedoms extend only so far that they do not overlap on another’s. I don’t get my morality from a single book, just like most people don’t, which is why ethics continue to evolve as they have evolved over the last two thousand years, which is we don’t have things like slavery any more.

So your ethics are based in a Hobbesian world view - the view that we are all "beastly" (Hobbes' word), and thus our laws are a sort of contract we enter into simply to protect us from one another. The Church's understanding of law is that the law is something that helps guide us to a better state of living. I believe that Hobbes' "development" a few hundred years ago was not an "evolution" of morality but a "devolving" based on a flawed understand of what it means to be human

Thank you for your message of love and understanding. As a married woman (and mother of one!) who has never quite grasped how to respond to those who profess to be homosexual, I am grateful beyond words that you are not only willing to speak about this but also explain the Church's teaching in lay-terms for those of us who aren't brave enough to open the CCC and wade through its complicated wording. Again, thank you!

I think this message is well delivered and spells out very well that we can bring our sins to Christ but we are not to accept them and therefore repent. Same sex attraction is a form of sexual immorality and therefore comparable to other sexual immoral acts like committing adultery / pornography etc. The Bible talks about the
narrow gate to salvation and the broad road to destruction. We all must strive to repent and trust in our Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ.

But you didn't say "who will have no romantic relationships of any kind" you said "predestined to form romantic relationships" - I, as a seminarian (and of course also as a priest) experience frequent attraction to the opposite sex, but I was not, even before priesthood, someone who falls into your original statement of being "predestined to form romantic relationships with members of the opposite sex"

What about the people I quoted in the homily - the Catholics who experience same sex attraction and hear HOPE from the Catholic Church? Does the Church make them feel guilty? Does the Church make them feel ashamed?
Maybe, just maybe, the people I quoted in the homily, David Morrison and Eve Tushnet, and many others like them, actually LISTENED to what the Church says about their experience...maybe they actually LISTENED and DIDN'T hear condemnation but instead felt LOVED and at HOME?

      Chris
You know better than to use that answer, as it clearly only pushes the question back. You need to tell us why the state is doing this, and Fr. Hollowell's point seems to be that the state does it because we still recognize that sex isn't a "free for all," the way your flippancy suggests you think it is.

Catholic Man n Proud, thanks for your comments. I too feel sad for our gay kids. I wish that the Church would say more to support them and to speak out against bullying. You are right, lots of Catholics support gay marriage. It is already legal in many states. Fifty years ago inter-racial marriages were illegal in many states and 80% percent of Americans were against it. Many thought it to be an abomination and against the Bible. But the Supreme Court said that it was allowed.

I would simply say that, although they have toed the line & suppressed a natural desire in order to obtain after-life rewards, it's unreasonable to expect everyone to do this. Everyone, both homosexual & heterosexual, should be held to the same standard.

Initially you had common law marriages in which the State didn't have a role in officiating the marriage. For instance in Ancient Rome and Greece, a couple was recognized as married by their immediate community after conducting a religious ceremony. After that, if fell under the jurisdiction of the Canon Law because the Catholic Church declared marriage to be a Sacrament. It then fell under Civil law during the Reformation(continued)

so it is okay to be intolerant, as long as you are intolerant of the intolerant...then the REALLY scary question is "who decides what tolerance looks like" because it seems that depending on how you answer that question, one could be given a green light to be as intolerant as one chooses - as long as the "governing body" has declared the target to be "intolerant"

Of course not, when I said 'one type of sex' I was referring to sex between homosexuals vs. between straight people. Sex needs to be between consenting adults, the problem with prostitution is that it ends up being exploitative towards sex workers. However, there is no basis to discriminate between homosexual and straight people as no sexual orientation is inherently immoral.
