    First off, your wedding footage is lovely to see! Excited you are off to explore the islands. What a beautiful day for a ferry ride. I'd love to go wind surfing like the folks you pointed out while waiting for the ferry. The boat looked really nice on the inside. I'm impressed and it's pretty cheap! Your hostel looked nice too. Sounds like it was in a great location :) Also, a very happy belated bday to Craig’s mom hehe :)

    I'm a central mainlander and I remember the first time I visited Hiiumaa. Such a pretty place! We went with our class as a school-end trip and it was such a beautiful place that I'm still thinking of sometime moving to live somewhere on the islands.
    Also a interesting phrase, I don't know if you've heared before, but to the mainlanders, the people from the isles are considered to be the toughest lot :D Throughout history they've been the last region to fall to the occuping powers and stuff.
    And throughout history the islands were the richest region in Estonia. During the time of Teutonic rule over the land, Saaremaa was the richest region in Estonia and there were a lot of people living there. Same goes for Hiiumaa and the other islands.

    • @TideKnotTravellers
      @TideKnotTravellers  3 года назад

      That is really interesting to hear that they were the last to succumb to the occupying powers.
      We loved both the Estonian islands that we visited, Hiiumaa felt very exclusive and the quality of life on the islands felt really high. Hope you get to live there one day! 😊

    I stayed in the same hotel and I not remember if also in the same room (I have to check photos). I thought I was the only tourist on the island. In the morning one man was ringing that church bell across the road. There is interesting mechanism for that bell. I went to some remote beach to see footprints of different animals in the sand. Next day returned to Tallinn.

    6:17 it takes around thirty minutes to get to Saaremaa from the mainland because the ferry actually takes you to the island of Muhu which is connected to Saaremaa by a causeway.

    Hiiumaa is my home iland. It was actualy called Dagö a long time ago,witch in translation means "the island of sun".

    • @TideKnotTravellers
      @TideKnotTravellers  4 года назад +2

      Ahh what a lovely name for the island!

    • @forgottenmusic1
      @forgottenmusic1 4 года назад +3

      The direct translation would actually be "The Island of Day", and the original meaning was perhaps "The Island Where the Day Starts", as it locates east from Sweden. As Hiiumaa had sparse population in early times, the Swedes were migrating to there (as well as to several other coastal areas in Estonia) in late Medieval time, reaching up to one third of the population of the island. Btw, Kärdla was originally a Swedish village as well. As Estonians were serfs, but Swedes remained free, there were constant attempts of the local landlords (most of them were German origin) to make them into serfs as well. Finally, as Estonia got annexed by Russia, during the reign of Catherine the Great nearly all the Swedes of Hiiumaa were moved to the lands just conquered by Russia and depopulated from Crimean Tatars (today, in Southern Ukraine). Nearly half of them didn't survive the roadtrip, or the following winter, as they were put "in the middle of nowhere". In early Soviet time, they got a chance to move to Sweden, but those who remained there faced Stalinist repressions in the years to come, and after the WWII their settlement was populated by Ukrainians moved to there from Poland. So, by now they are close to assimilation, only some elderly people still speaking Swedish.

    • @TideKnotTravellers
      @TideKnotTravellers  4 года назад +1

      The journeys and history of these lands truly fascinates (and devastates) the more we read and learn. It is so hard to comprehend the difference seeing these places and talking to locals.

    The reason why the ferry trip lasts so long is that there are treacherous waters between Mainland Estonia and Hiiumaa, many shallows and rocks, so the ships and ferries must navigate carefully. There was one person, who took advantage of the circumstances - Baron von Ungern-Sternberg. He was a wealthy, empowered landowner at the Hiiumaa Island back in the 18th century, who would lure in desperate ships on stormy nights by setting up false lights for them as if to find their way to a harbour. Once a ship was marooned, he and his men would comandeer it, kill the crew and the passengers and to rob the ship of its cargo and the passengers of their belongings. According to the legend nobody wanted to do business with Hiiumaa any more, the local people rose up in rebellion against the Baron, dragged him out of his manor house and lynched him.

    • @TideKnotTravellers
      @TideKnotTravellers  4 года назад +1

      Super interesting, makes sense as we have since learned of all the ships that were wrecked by the shallows surrounding the island. Pleased the Baron was dealt with though!
