Is SAAREMAA SAFE NOW in 2020? ESTONIAS FORMER ‘CORONA ISLAND’ EXPLORING KURESSAARE CASTLE & FORTRESS

  • The CAPITAL of SAAREMAA - KURESSAARE we’re finally exploring the island after the pandemic quarantine.
    In this video we continue our tour of Estonia as we head over to KURESSAARE CASTLE in Kuressaare, the capital of Saaremaa which during the height of the pandemic in March was labeled the ’CORONA ISLAND’ after half of it’s population were thought to have contracted COVID19 and the island was completely shut off from the Estonian mainland. Check out our comparison video to see how well they dealt with it: • OUR REAL LIFE COMPARIS...
    We were so pleased to finally make it to this island and to check out one of the most spectacular castle fortresses we’ve ever seen! The island is spacious and the people are so friendly, there is no crowding so it feels completely safe and no one appears to be living in fear of the coronavirus here.
    After exploring the town of Kuressaare in the morning: • Is SAAREMAA SAFE NOW i... we waited for the rain to pass then made our way over to the castle for an afternoon of sunshine and sightseeing!
    The well preserved castle and fortress dates back to the 14th century and like most of Estonia it too has had a colourful history. We just couldn’t believe that just a short walk from the main town of Kuressaare there is this incredible Castle - fortress (Arensburg) just perched next to the sea, it is truly incredible!
    Upcoming videos!
    We continue exploring the island of Saaremaa and head out of the main town to see what else the island has to offer.

    Though most of the castles in Estonia and Latvia suffered in the Livonian war, many were restored after the war as well. The main reason why most of the castles are in ruins was the Great Northern War. As when Russian troops were fighting in the areas of Estonia and Latvia, it was not sure yet if they are able to keep these territories, Peter I decided to blow the castles up just for a case, as well as to destroy everything else he could. Kuressaare survived, as it was too complicated to transport huge amounts of explosives to the island. As the war was accompanied by plague as well, just a third of the population in here survived (and even less survived the Livonian war earlier).

    • @TideKnotTravellers
      @TideKnotTravellers  3 года назад +1

      forgottenmusic1 that’s interesting that part of the reason it wasn’t destroyed came simply down to logistics🙂

    the museum inside the Kuressaare castle takes at least half a day. it's packed with history, geology and nature from basement to ramparts. Add to that the building itself is stunning in it's simple, but beautiful architecture, early gothic in style. There is a small chappel in there, that has the best acoustics that i've ever met.

    So did you ever figure out why Dolomite was used for everything? Is it a stronger substance or more prevalent than Limestone? Also, this location is unbelievably charming. The water, islands, windmill and fortress wall are so idyllic. What a unique place!

    • @TideKnotTravellers
      @TideKnotTravellers  3 года назад +1

      Ruth and Thomas Dolomite is a type of limestone😊 it is just limestone that has different minerals - has higher magnesium calcium carbonate than regular limestone it’s just created slightly differently through chemical changes called dolomitization. They happen to have a lot of it to hand due to the type of landscape and soil so I guess that’s why they use it but Dolomite is one of the most often used limestones. (Sorry if that was long winded😅) It was such a beautiful place to visit!🏰
