THE LEANING TOWER of SAAREMAA! EXPLORING ESTONIAS SUMMER DESTINATION ISLAND & VILSANDI NATIONAL PARK

  • Our summer tour of Estonia is really giving us the chance to get to know this beautiful little country and it’s islands. In this video we head out to Vilsandi National Park on the island of Saaremaa. We make the 4.5km walk over to see Kiipsaare Lighthouse which is known as the Pisa Tower of Saaremaa due to becoming tilted as a result of strong storms and waves.
    Kiipsaare lighthouse was completed in 1933 and is 26 metres high. Initially, the lighthouse was constructed about 100m from the coast; however, due to changes in the shoreline, it is now located in the sea!
    We had a great time checking out all the beautiful secluded little beaches along the way and as we have found everywhere here this summer in Estonia, the mosquitoes (and other bitey flying things) are everywhere! Bug spray is essential but only does so much - our legs are both covered in bruises and bites from the relentless little critters - you’ll also spot a few squashed on our car windscreen as a handful flew in pretty much every time we opened the doors.
    The walk was very scenic though and rewarding, once you reach Kiipsaare lighthouse and the beach which also has a little sand spit that goes way out to sea! :)
    Upcoming videos!
    Join us next time as we continue exploring the Estonian island of Saaremaa and head East to see something out of this world, literally!

    That's a looong walk but it for sure seems worth it. Very few people around on an epic sand spit. I guess the leaning tower of pisa isn't as unique as we thought... though I guess the architecture has a leg up on kipsari 😉

    • @TideKnotTravellers
      @TideKnotTravellers  3 года назад

      Travel Interesante - Gökçe and Steve yeh it was a really scenic walk with lovely little beaches along the way which also had no people on, so spacious! Yeh the leaning tower of Pisa is definitely more of a beautiful structure but a wonky lighthouse that’s now sea locked was pretty cool to see too😊

    I visited this lighthouse about 20 years ago. Seems that there have been some visible changes since then.
    At the time, it wasn't an official tourist destination. There was a "no entry" traffic sign, but the locals were not bothered by it, so for us the walk to the site was only a few hundred meters from the spot where the trail started to get too soft for ordinary vehicles.
    The lighthouse was built in the 30s. At the time, the place was in the middle of the dune at the end of the peninsula, a hundred meters from the shoreline. During Soviet occupation it was a closely guarded military site surrounded by barbed wire and with a sentry post next to it. Even the commander of the guarding unit had to get permission from his superiors before being allowed to enter.
    Over time the seas and the winds shifted the dune, so in early 90s the waves were lapping the foundation and the lighthouse started to tilt. 20 years ago it was standing on the waterline on the west side of the dune, and the tilt was much bigger than it is now. It was possible, although dangerous, to get to the top using the (half rusted away) ladder inside the tower - I heard a story about a parent who had to climb up there because his children had sneaked in and refused to come down.
    There was an article in the local newspaper at the time, wondering about the fate of the lighthouse - the engineers considered it to be ready to topple at any moment.
    But now I see that the dune has shifted even more, and the lighthouse is standing almost upright again, way away from the shore.

    • @TideKnotTravellers
      @TideKnotTravellers  3 года назад

      Mats Saar that is fascinating, so pleased the lighthouse has straightened up enough to be safer, hopefully it’ll stay put! It was strange to look at pictures of it back when it wasn’t out in the sea. Such a unique little place😊

    • @tadasc8449
      @tadasc8449 3 года назад +1

      Baltic sea is the most poluted sea in the world, because everybody dumped their war chemicals in the water, now its corosed and leaking... Also there is a little gap between Danmark and Sweden so the water does not change(it's inland sea) however, its got very beautiful beaches sandy, stoney, loads of bolders, rocky. Its got loads of forest, Amber and iodine 😂😆😉 busy resorts, cities to wild wild shoreline. Its very light in the summer and warmish weather. But cold, dark and freezing cold(not as cold anymore, global warming) in the winter. I'd say the trip around baltic sea is one of the best destinations for summer fun! 👌🙂

    • @forgottenmusic1
      @forgottenmusic1 3 года назад +1

      @@tadasc8449 Hmmm... if you put into google "the most polluted sea", the result you'd get is Mediterranean. Actually, as the Baltic sea is not deep, the water changes pretty well compared to other nearly landlocked seas. And, if you lived at seaside, you would wish it was colder in winter - as long as the sea is not frozen, it is damn humid. Temperatures like -10 C with less humidity are much more comfortable than just above 0 and humid. Not to talk that ice fishing is a great fun :D But for tourists, who think that is something too extreme, driving ice roads to the islands should be exotic enough :P

    • @tadasc8449
      @tadasc8449 3 года назад

      @@forgottenmusic1 yes you are right very similar level of pollution baltic and Mediterranean... Sea water freshing up every 20 30 yes, and beeing shallow it makes it rather tricky prosess! I always say the region is the best place to be in the summertime not too hot and very light but my gosh winters are dark and cold. P. S climate change is problem #1 way bigger than covid!!

    • @forgottenmusic1
      @forgottenmusic1 3 года назад

      @@tadasc8449 Lol for sure it's not Italy or Greece in here, but no way I'd like to exchange the real winter to some endless autumn like in Western Europe. As it is dark, humid and not cold enough, usually November is the worst time here, December is already much better if it is only cold enough to have snow. No wonder that probably the freakiest movie ever made here is called November too - worth a look :P

    I've been up there in the lighthouse.It was quite dodgy climbing on a very rusty ladder, that in places looked like it shouldn't hold my weight, but it did.. Up there is about 10 cm layer of seagull 2stuff", that is decomposed to almost clay-like substance. It was a bit of gymnastics to get to the door opening, since it is about 2 m up, when you stand on the base of the lighthouse. Swimming there is so nice - you can almiost just jump in from the shore for the water deepens very suddenly due to erosion that eats up the land rapidly. Between the shoreline and the lighthouse my feet could not touch the seafloor.
