As a person with very curly hair, it blows my mind that a famous beauty expert is talking about styling curls. I'm young but even I remember the days of Lorraine Massey's book being my only resource and every stylist in town wanting to straighten my hair on the way out of the salon. I am so happy with this trend in the beauty industry yet I can only hope that curl and texture acceptance continues far past this trend. Let's make it happen!! Also from Queer Eye to Over the Top to this channel JVN is creating such incredible content and I love it!!!
Yes!❤️
Yasss Queen!!
They still want to straighten my hair in salons 😥🥺
Yesss. I was 35 when I found a hairdresser that knew what to do with my super curly hair. My mum got my childhood hairdresser to just cut all my hair off bc no one knew what to do with it! When I went to a hairdresser to get it straightened after I’d grown it all out, she complained that it took too long (and it looked TERRIBLE). FINALLY us curly haired people are being taught and encouraged to embrace and love our natural hair!!!! 👏👏👏
The diffusing sequence is THE most accurate thing I’ve ever seen
This is exactly what I was thinking. Also, the little side-eye crinkle, skeptical look he gives his hair while he is spraying the texturizing spray... That is the look everyone has made at their hair in the middle of attempting to push that 75% perfect style be 95% perfect... A little scolding to say, you better not make me wish I had stopped at 75%.
Everyone in the curly community is RAGING that you wear your hair straight so much with curls like that
RIGHT?!?!
The curly community is toxic anyways. They talk about "being you" but the moment you talk about straightening they get pissed or try to talk you down.
It's because it takes so much more time.
We love a natural hair moment! I would love to see a follow-up video to see how to enhance your day 2 and day 3 waves/curls!
a spray bottle with conditioner and water! some hair spray. maybe an update with mousse if necessary. That's about it!
Oh my god, yes please!!
I hope everyone that is "jealous of your curls" watches this and the effort we have to go through.... this is why I 95% of the time messy-bun it.
i'm still jealous of your curls.... but as someone who hates doing self care i'm like... i will just admire the curly haired's around me
But we don't really have to do all that. There's extra steps in there... lol
Yeah there are a ton of extra steps here. I just wash my hair, put in product, pin the top back and go. After years of struggling with my curls while everyone had stick straight hair, now it's my time to take advantage!
Shoutout to hair tutorials actually done on yourself instead of a mannequin!!!! Those neck configurations were cracking me up
I got played so hard with the Tan France bit
I'd love a video for a total beginner's guide on adding some variety to everyday looks? (eg straightening, curling, plaits, buns). I literally only know a basic ponytail and look the same everyday lol. I find a lot of style how-to videos intimidating and complicated tbh so would love a really simple one 🙂
Yes!
Same. I have long hair so it’s always in a bun. When I do wear it down, people always comment on the length and curl. I’m watching closely to see what I can do to get the curl more tameable.
I’d highly recommend CuteGirlsHairstyles. Especially her earlier videos. She even did some “daddy dos” (styles meant for dads, and beginners) including one where her husband taught how to do a 3 strand braid.
Same! Plus my hair is super thing my style always goes flat ☹️
I’d recommend Curly Susie’s channel, she’s no-nonsense, and easy to follow plus her video tend to be
This is perfect! After 19 years of relaxing my curly hair, I've decided to stop and embrace my curls.
Good stuff!! Curly Girl Method has heaps of info if you find yourself getting stuck.
Your hair will go through a period of transition where you will regret changing, but stay the course and it will come right in no time!
Great video. I would like to know what do you do on the days you´re not washing it. and how to make them survive through a good night sleep
Best way to protect your curls during night is using a satin or silk cap, you look like and old lady, but your curls survive the night. Or also, you can use a satin pillow case 🙂
Yes to the satin cap but you can also do a pineapple ponytail on the top of your head. Use a scrunchie or I use cut up sections from the ankle of an old tube sock. Doesn't crease the hair like a hair tie.
I have the same texture as Jonathan and pineapples have never worked for me. I recently discovered a method where you use 4 small clips to avoid crown flattening and it's changed my life. This is the video: ruclips.net/video/M-Ob-EVVjm8/видео.html and the method I'm referring to is at about the ten min mark
What Lily has said. Medusa clipping is the only way mine stay good for multiple days. Similarly my hair is a similar length and texture to Jonathan’s. I find pineapples or buffs stretch waves out too much and bonnets allow for too much movement.
Thanks for the tips
I’ve lived 38 years with this weird curly/wavy hair that I never really quite knew how to style well. This is maybe one of the best videos I’ve watched on how to wash/diffuse style curly hair! Thank you!! (Also my first time ever seeing one of JVN videos!!!)
Yes to the curly queeens - curls are
B E A U T I F U L , celebration!!
Yea curls! Bring them on! Mine are 62 years old and are finally fantastic with all the fun and great enhancing products like these. Thank you for your great help. I'm going to go out in style 😉😉. Thank you for your Beauty RUclips channel. I'm so glad you've made it happen. Cherish you JVN, you make a significant difference in this world, in many aspects. Stay strong.
Jonathan, I want a curly hair styling video with you and Weird Al Yankovic.
HAHAHA!!
How can anyone have that much charisma?
How has it taken five decades for me to discover these awesome tips? I am so done with allowing people who cut/color my hair thinking that straightening it is always the last step. I. Want. It. Natural.
The Pandemic meant I had to figure out my curls cuz I went 15 months without a cut! I am now a curly addict and LOVING my hair. This is a fantastic overview video. Anyone who wants to go deeper, figure out your curl type (I'm a 3A, it goes from 1-4, ABC within each number) and find youtubers who are exclusively curly hair experts. There are many out there, even down to high vs low density hair and more. I had NO idea I could have such predictably awesome curls.
Hot Sock?!? I had no idea this was a thing. Perfect for curly girl travel when you don’t want to pack a big diffuser! Thanks, JVN!
That fishnet trick! Been naturally curly for years and never have seen that one. *Runs to lingerie drawer to try!*
Brilliant right!
Loads of curlies do it!!! Penny turned me on to it ages ago!!!😉
Same, 100% trying!
I have naturally very straight hair and I’m so obsessed with curls that I set my hair in hot rollers or over night roller sets.
Sending love to the natural curl Queens 💗
omg wear your hair like this all the time!!! ITS GORGEOUS!!!
THIS is the video I've been looking for! I have fine, curly hair and, even at 50, have never quite figured out how to help it live up to its curly potential. Thanks, JVN! 😘😘😘
Aghh! I literally have been waiting for Jonathan to talk about curls for soo long! Love this. But I would also really love it if we could see a whole cycle of curly hair. I feel like I'm quite confident with how I can style my hair straight out of the shower, but after the first day things start to look quite sad haha, and I haven't really found great ways to bring the curls back to life which ends up in a bun or a hat over them and then they are ruined, so I have to take showers more often than I would like.. Anyways, thanks for a great video Jonathan. I'm glad you're finally over on youtube :)
Loved this! Thanks for sharing Jon!
As someone who has naturally uneven wavy hair this helped alot especially the moose application!! Thank you!!!
I LOVE your curly hair tips!!!
Loved!!! Needed this so bad!!!!!
I’ve had curly hair my whole life & can even say I’m guilty of the over washing because I genuinely didn’t know what to do with my hair. Videos like these genuinely have helped me out. Thank you❣️
You're genius for that fish net stocking idea. This curly hair tutorial rocks!
Omgggg im so stoked for your channel!!
This was ridiculously helpful Jonathan! I'm embracing my waves and I can't wait to try this technique!
Thank you Jonathan!!
OMG Thank YOU 😍 Needed this, would love to see more, like ways to style n such 👏👏👏
You are the best! Your energy is so infectious. Keep being you, boo!💕
Yes!! Bumble & Bumble are awesome! I’m so so obsessed with the reactivator!
Love love love you and so happy you're on RUclips now.
love this routine
your curls look goooorgeous! thanks for the tips!
You're just darling. My wife and I (both curly haired girls, by the way!) were ecstatic to see you on RUclips. Can't wait to see more from you! 😘
Watching you embrace your natural curl pattern more and more has made me so so happy! When I was a little girl I never saw people with hair like mine and I had no idea how to style it, so I didn’t learn to love my hair until I was well into my 20s. Love this journey for you JVN
I don’t have curly hair, but my daughter does. When I’m trying to take care of her hair it becomes a strugs-to-func situation. Thanks so much for this tutorial!!
I use strugs-to-func conversationally too! 😉👌💗✨
Some tips that JVN didn't cover here that maybe you, with straight hair, never had to thought about: curly hair gets detangled ends to roots (don't get that comb or brush and push it down from the roots). Work the knots little by little. Try to not brush it dry as well -- that makes the hair look frizzy and can break it too --, but if your daughter hair gets very tangled, use a lil bit of oil, work through the bigger knots with the oil in your hands first, then come in with the brush. It's normal for the hair to get a bit "crunchy" after drying with mousse or cream on it; wait until it's COMPLETELY dry (either naturally or with the blow dryer), then come back with your hands with a lil bit of oil (or using an old soft cotton tshirt as a glove) and scrunch (that crunching motion JVN showed in the video) the hair until there's no crunchiness left. It's also very normal for people to have different kinds of curls and waves in their heads, so there might be some parts of her hair that are curlier, others are wavier, some can even be kinda straight! If she has a lot of different textures it might be a good idea to apply more or less product on that part of the head (more for curlier, less for straighter). I know this is a lot but your daughter will thank you in the future for helping her with her curls! :)
Yes mama! I was in the same boat, really curly and my mum had pin straight hair - so I didn't learn how to do my hair properly until I was in my 30s.
The above tips are GREAT! And also check out The Curly Girl Method, there's a ton of information out there on how to style and manage curly hair of all textures and at all price points and skill levels.
You are doing amazing just by even considering it! Go you!!
Love your curly hair!!!
Those curls are incredible! This is so fun to see. Last year, I discovered that I actually have wavy-curly hair too, so it's been fun to experiment and see other people embracing their natural texture.
Such pretty curls!! 😍
You not only give us great content but with the most uplifting attitude... thank you!
I was literally going to pick up my straightener but saw this video. Can’t wait to try this next time I wash.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, Jonathan! This is exactly the help I needed! 👩🦱🥰
Yes! I just asked for this in your last video, thank you, thank you!
Loved the tips! Thank you
Yay, a new curl friend!
Thank you so much for this, JVN!
Thank you for doing this episode on curls, getting lots of great ideas from this!
I have 80’s Flashdance hair. In the 90’s I used to iron my hair (yes, an actual clothes iron). Now I’m just full 80’s hair. Curly hair is wild and fun. Embrace what you got!
So good! I think our hair is a similar texture, and I've been trying to get this level of curls.
Honey, this is amazing!!! As somebody who's had curly hair all her life and struggle with it, you made me feel seen and actually excited to take better care of my curls! Thank you so much ❤️
Thanks Johnathan! I’m a curly girl too and will definitely use these tips. You look amazing
THANK GOD FOR THIS CHANNEL 😭 WE LOVE YEWWWWW!!💜
This is pretty similar to my strategy. I actually diffuse with clips on the roots if I'm looking for volume, though. I also put a layer of gel over my mouse to make the style last longer.
As others have mentioned, if you haven't tried a Denman brush, DO IT!❤️ I don't use it most days, but when I'm putting in the time to look extra cute it's my best tool!
Okay I'm definitely buying a diffuser now! Great video 💙
OMG! all you ALL need to say 'thank queen Jonathan for not just saving hairs but saving souls like mine!"....Thank you for keeping us focused on first things first! love yourself!
Love this! The fishnet idea is pure genius 😄
Oh my goodness I love you so much🥺 this really did my heart good. I love to see people embrace their natural curls. Watching tv growing up, it was so hard finding someone I could identify with and I used to wish my hair was straight so badly so I could fit in. There were days I would cry straightening my hair because it would never get as silky and straight as other people’s. But now I am deeply in love with my uniqueness and curls☺️ thank you so much for posting this and being a positive light 🙂
Omg! Just tried this and I’m loving my curls! I always struggle with wearing my curly hair natural and usually only looks good on day one. Gonna see how this looks on day 2-3! Thanks for the video!
Love you so much and love that you have this channel now. Thank you for all the love and joy you put out into the world!!
I would love to know what styles you use for 3rd or 4th day curly hair!
Finally. Someone explained how this works. I've watched so much RUclips. So much reddit. Thank you.
Right? I've seen so many curlygirl method videos and reddit posts, but it was always way too complicated. (I thought letting your hair be natural was supposed to be easier!?) I've never been able to get a diffuser not to make my hair frizz the eff out, but now I'm going to try this technique next wash!
Manes by Mel... The best curly hair girl
Yesss honeyyy I am soooo glad you’re embracing your natural type 3 gurl curls
This is so helpful! Thank you
Yess let’s embrace the curls
Girrllll you have my hair, I love it! Thx for the vid, it is awesome 💗
This is too good, don’t stop and you do look amazing!
I LOVE your hair like this!!!!
Omg definitely gonna try the fishnet stocking thing!
LOVE YOU JVN
Holy buckets Jonathan! Your hair is gorgeous!
Oh my gosh, you have no idea how much I've been needing this for YEARS. THANK YOU!!
Huge Thank you! Love this video. I will embrace my curls. Happily placing my straightener down
Own those curls! Check out the curly maintenance video too!
My mam has incredible frizzy hair and my hair is flat, straight, fine and flyaway. I remember we once went to the salon and I got a curly blow dry and mam got her hair straightened and my Dad said we'd swapped hair for the day! LOL
Love seeing how you embrace your natural curls.
Yesss Jonathan!! I'm in love with this channel lol
Love this! It’s really about using ENOUGH of the right products and getting lift in that crown!
These tips are Game Changing! Love 💕 the information for us curly hair folks- I picked up the Bumble and Bumble hair texture spray, we’ll see!
I have been struggling with my wavy hair! I tried this last night and my hair looks 100% better I feel way more confident already! Thank you so much
These are great tips! Go curls!
Jonathan, thank you for embracing the curls! I think my curl pattern is pretty similar to yours, so I am going to try some of your suggestions.
Your waves are so beautiful! Defo need to try this on my hair 😍 love ya queen!!
Great tips!
Yes!! Help me with my 2a wavy hair, Jonathan ❤
this was so helpful!
This is the best curly hair video ever!!
I love this!! My hair is similar to yours and I needed to see this. I love my curl and embrace it, but don't do the best job of styling it. I learned so much from this video! Now, if I only had that Dyson! Oh, and you make me smile. Thank you for being you!! ❤
Oh my goodness!!! That stocking trick is Everything!!! So smart!!! I always feel like it’s super frizzy and I don’t get the look I’m going for but this I think will definitely help!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!! You’re the best!!!
Thank you! I've been struggling so much with my hair and trying to find the best ways for my hair not to look all frizzy with my natural curls!
I don’t have curly or wavy hair at all but just came to say you’re a amazing and so aspirational for me! You are everything the world needs right now.
Thanks for the tutorial! Right now, as I’m trying to grow out damage from a year of The Covid Ponytail, I’m trying to learn a good heatless styling technique. I really like the products you suggested, and I think the fishnets idea will work with air drying, too.
A couple years ago half my hair fell out due to stress and health. We chopped it short to try to take the weight off, I tried to leave my scalp alone because it was in pain, I ate way more protein to fit my lifestyle, and I researched the curly girl method and also for what the women of Color were doing for their hair. It saved my scalp. My hair over time got used to my natural waves and I started sprouting a couple real curls. I’m so happy being this way with my natural texture and my scalp isn’t in pain anymore. I do get slapped by non- curly girls (never guys) for saying curly girl method. To them I don’t have curly hair. But the actual curly girls are so kind and do agree that my hair is curly. I hope people become more accepting of the curly life. Everyone’s hair is so different and personal. It’s about appreciating what you have and loving your neighbor.
Thank you so much ! I was actually thinking about this today how to make my curly hair style look better
Omg! Jonathan you look gorgeous with curly hair !
Great video! This is what I needed! Thank you 💖
Love you so much! Love all the positivity 🦋💜 And those curls, yes 😗😗
Hi, me again. I will give all these tips to my niece, I am very straight but she... she has beautiful curls and they will be more with everything you teach. Thank you JVN you light up my life, our lifes!!! 💞
