  • In some ways MALCOLM CANMORE was the Scottish king who changed things more than any other Bruce Fummey, of Scotland History Tours, traces the path of King Malcolm III of Scotland to the throne. The coronation at scone of Malcom Canmore is one of the stories from Scotland's past that has been misunderstood. Mainly because of Shakespeare's unfair portrayal of Macbeth.

    is one of those Scottish history tour guides who brings you tales from Scotland's history, events from key dates in Scotland's history and historic days out in Scotland. Here Bruce tells a tale from Scotland's past about one of the kings that changed Scotland forever. After that he gives you some advice about planning an historic day out in Scotland that you'll remember as one of your historic days out in Scotland. OK, is that too cheesy?
    Scottish history tour guides like Bruce can help you plan a day out in Scotland as well as learn about Scottish history. Here he gives some historical places to visit in Scotland including visits to Scone Palace Perth Scotland, the Historic Environment Scotland site Dunkeld Cathedral and Dunsinnane Hill for Macbeth's hill fort.

    Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
    As one of Scotland history tour guides people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So from April 2020 I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

    Hi Bruce. Actually, I am astounded at how much The Bard got right. Okay, so Malcolm Canmore was only nine; and so on and so on. But wasn't Shakespeare's intention to write about a hero with many great attributes whose unfortunate flaw was his overwhelming ambition?
    So much of what you've filled in about history, slots in well with the play's plot.
    I think a really interesting story would be the one about Luluch! (Autocorrect turned that into "Lunch" 🤭and perhaps that isn't too far off, either...)
    Thank you for the videos. I enjoy every single one.
    Can't help seeing the "Three Witches' Tearoom" as also a "Tear 'oom". 😥 Don't believe the Weird Women, King!

    • @ScotlandHistoryTours
      @ScotlandHistoryTours  2 года назад +2

      Aye we'll have to agree to disagree on the accuracy of Shakespeare. Lulach would be a good story, but source information will be scarce

    • @jeannecyrus1613
      @jeannecyrus1613 2 года назад

      @@ScotlandHistoryTours I understand that there isn't much to go on.
      The story would need to be a great deal of "fan fiction" which is what Shakespeare did with his version of "Macbeth" and the characters of Duncan, the Macbeths and Malcolm.
      But if the Coen brothers, or someone like that could pick up on Luluch, a stepson of Macbeth, I think it could be so fascinating.
      A stepson... A stepfather who had killed a previous king... He reigned for a few months only... And he was called "Luluch" - not Duncan or Robert or Bruce. Mmm. Definitely bases for a story with lots of twists and issues.

    Another great video Bruce. I wonder if you are planning another video about Malcolm Canmore?
    You see I was brought up in North Northumberland and went to school at Alnwick, where we had sports fields a mile out of the town (aye we had to run there play a game of football or rugby and run back).
    So why is that relevant to Scottish History? The place was Malcolm's Cross aye that's right the monument marking the death place of Malcolm III (Canmore) at the battle of Alnwick 13 Nov 1093. Despite it being a local landmark, etc I don't actually know very much more than this about the battle and the impact the death of Malcolm III and his son Edward had on Scotland at the time. I'm sure there's a story here that doesn't involve my tale of running to and from the sports fields for PE lessons in the early 1980s. Not something they do now as the school is at the other end of the town & they no longer have a psycho long-distance runner for a PE teacher who liked the wee jog. ;-)

    So Malcolm was just another Scottish king who needed an English army to make it happen, but also used an English propagandist who may have written a semi fictional account based on this incident, where MacBeth is definitely the villain of the tale. Whether the English scribbler as you called him actually wrote the piece, or simply took credit for it is much debated, but at least this tale helped keep the story alive around the world.

      Malcolm III of Scotland---Born: March 26, 1031, Kingdom of Scotland
      Died: November 13, 1093, Alnwick, United Kingdom.
      William Shakespeare---Born: April 1564, Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom
      Died: April 23, 1616, Stratford upon Avon, United Kingdom.
      How could King Malcolm III use an English propagandist who lived 500 years after him?
      Malcolm III was married to Saint Margaret of Scotland (House of Wessex), granddaughter of Edward II "Ironside", King of England.
      Edward II was a half brother of Edward The Confessor, so things stayed in the family.
      The youngest daughter of Malcolm III and Margaret of Scotland, Mary of Scotland Dunkeld, is a direct ancestor of mine through the House of Boulogne, the House of Blois, the House of Alsace, and the House of Brabant.
