The Boot “Mistakes” a Beginner Makes (or, How to Make the Most of Your Boot Collecting Experience)

  • You’re just getting into boot collecting and you begin to get the feeling that you’re missing something. Well....you are! There are so many mistakes we all inevitably make in our “boot journey”, but my hope is that this video might get you thinking critically enough to save you from some “mistakes”. This isn’t exhaustive, just a few things on my mind concerning this topic. At the end of the day, we all make choices we later regret, but if we can learn from past choices, the future is always brighter.

    1. Know your feet 2:40
know your size (including, but more than the Brannock sizing) and shape of your feet (such as heal shape, toe shape and width, arch, and instep height)
    2. Buy simple, then go big 12:11
Don't go to your dream boot in your first few purchases, because you will make all kinds of mistakes. Learn your preferences and mistakes, then go for the one you like.
    3. Space out your purchases 23:18
give yourself enough time to learn the current one before moving on to the next one.
    4. Don't lock yourself into purchases (e.g. pre-order) 25:27
Not for newbies. For those who know what they like and are experienced already. Beginners should make informed choices and give yourself an escape route.
    5. Don't get hung up on the details 27:40
Learn enough so you find the one you like, at which point price, leather, other people's opinion, status symbol, and all the factors on their own may stop to matter. The point is not quantity, or looking for the next best thing, but what the boot can do to you and with you.

So much of this resonates with me ESPECIALLY the take it slow part!!! You’re so right about that; slow is smooth and smooth is fast!! I also really liked that advice that your music teacher passed on about knowing the rules; and if you’re going to break the rules, know why you’re breaking them. That’s so profound and really good life advice in general because when you master the information, the more apt you are to recognize when it’s appropriate to break your own rules!! Dale you give such great advice. I got my first pair of gyw in 2015, a pair of redwings 1907. I have since owned viberg, alden, Crockett and jones, whites, cheaney, truman, grant stone, trickers, john logfren, the flathead, and paraboot from what I remember. I am currently clearning out my closest clothes/boots to only keep things I love. I completely agree with you that one can have an amazing three boot collection. Another tip I followed before even watching this video was creating a connection with ones boots. I recently got a pair of custom whites and decided to take them to a trip to san fransciso in order to bond with them over the labor day weekend. I wore them all day and visited standard and strange and self edge wearing them. I had a great time on that trip and those whites are now attached with those memories.

The first thing I wish I would've done before starting my journey was buying a brannock device. The workers at the Allen Edmonds store and Redwing store told me I'm a 9.5D but my feet are actually: Left foot size 10.75 C (ball)
Right foot size 10.25 C (ball)
(Toes are 10.5). I didn't even know there was a ball length size. I sold a lot of shoes that were too tight, lost thousands of dollars and all the time/frustration involved as well. Now I typically order 10.5D true to size or 10D if they run a half size large and the fit is perfect every time! I still have a few pairs that are too small but I've tried to stretch them by applying mink oil inside them and try to stretch them

Tremendous video. I can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed the info. I’ve worn average work boots for 35 years. They’ve served me well. Stumbled into the heritage boot world. I figured if I spend 14 hrs or more a day in boots, why not buy some real quality leather boots for feel and looks when I’m not working. My entry level boot is the Thursday Vanguard a month ago. I like them and will wear them a lot. I feel the desire now to get a pair of mto boots from Nicks. Specifically the Robert. Different than the Vanguards but I’m falling in love with that look with the hope of a greater feel. Tony

As a prior Marine, cool referance. I guess my first pair of boots was a pair of "cadillacs" (all leather black combat boots) and a pair of "Jungles" (canvas sided boots). I transgressed to Doc Martin oxfords in the late 90s. I've had "urban" style boots like Lugs and Timberland(entry level) and have had various Wolverine work boots that I have burnt through at work.
There is nothing like a well made properly fitted boot in my opinion.
I have friends that wear for comfort, like ultra boost Adidas. Or friends that wear Jordans.
But my newest passion for learning about footwear is stylized comfortable boots that go good with anything and that are rugged enough to take a walk in wet weather.
You have many good insights on how to approach understanding what you are looking for and how to go about it.

My first purchase of a heritage boot I jumped ahead and went with a pair of Viberg's 2030 Service Boots in calfskin. As an online purchase, it was a little bit of a nail biter at their prices. However, I did a lot of research first, including your videos which were very helpful, and so far it's worked out great. Still in the break-in phase but I'm confident I got the right size and last. Viberg's leather and quality of construction is pretty amazing.
How do I justify $925 (including shipping) and no blue box which was annoying? If you nail the right last and size, I think this is as close to full bespoke with custom made lasts as you can get without having to spend thousands of dollars.
Again, thanks for all of your help!

Great video! I think I know my feet very well and ironically enough they sound very similar to yours. So I have to ask how do you get boots that fit you properly, especially from the companies you mention that don’t sell narrow widths? I checked the site of most of the makers you mention and I was surprised to find a good number of them don’t offer anything narrower than a D. I can’t say that I’ve tried on many high end boots but I’ve tried a B width from both Nicks and Truman and found both to be way too high volume for my foot and ankle. I would need an A or more likely even a AA for them to come anywhere close to fitting. Thanks.

    • @thevintagefuture6567
      @thevintagefuture6567  3 года назад +1

Matt Stahr my best advice would be, depending on your style (fashion vs workwear), go to an Alden store if there’s one near you (fashion) because they’re really good at accommodating all sizes and widths OR contact Baker Shoe in Eugene, Oregon. Bakers is legendary at getting people fit. Out of Whites, Wesco, Nicks, and Bakers, Bakers was the only party that got my fit right without my help. They sell Whites, Wesco, Drews, and some other brands. You simply do Bakers fit sheet and tracings (and write unique features of your feet on there like “flat arches” etc), let them recommend a size, then call them on the phone to discuss after that to confirm. If/when Bakers gets you a boot you’re confident is a great fit after some use, you can then translate that to Nicks and other companies with some success. I had success with Nicks because Bakers got me my correct size previously and suggested some alterations (like cutting the quarters back - see my Nicks unboxing video). So these (Alden and Bakers) are the two options which come to mind. For the other brands I mentioned, I usually use inserts and thick socks to take up some volume. This works, but sometimes encounters issues.

Another thing to do, go on Ebay, Etsy, and see if you can get a used boot in the size you think, and see if it's returnable. This way, you can get the boot from the brand you want, get it fairy quickly, try it out, and if it does not fit return it. The key thing is you have now learned what size you think you need for that particular brand. In my experience, I can say with confidence, Drews Boots and Whites Boots basically fit the same. Nicks Boots do not fit like Whites Boots, so be careful thinking you will get a match. Nicks Boots tend to be narrower than Whites or Drews. Wesco Boots are true to size, if you measure a size 10D, you want to order a 10D in Wesco, but not in Whites, Nicks, or Drews Boots. If you measure a size 10D, you would want to order a 9 or 9.5D in a pair of Whites or Drews, and probably a 9E or 9.5 E or EE in a pair of Nicks. This is just from my experience and opinion, I have owned them all.

Glad you like the videos! Yes, your break-in is fine. Everyone has a different experience. Has much to do with the shape of your foot as compared to the shape of the boot. Do you feel Iron Ranger is a good shape for you (and appropriately sized)? If so, that probably explains why the break-in was pleasant.

I just recently got into boots. My first real pair of boots (more than like $40) was a pair of Nick's Builderpros. I ordered them back in May of 2020 when I saw Rose Anvil's video on them. I've got really bad flat feet and weak ankles and most footwear for me is just a painful disappointment. The only exception are expensive running shoes with decent arch support. So when I saw that video I was sold.
Before they came in early September I bought a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers at my local Red Wing Store in like late June due to impatience. They were okay in terms of feel after break in (ie better than most footwear I've worn), but they looked amazing.
After two months of wearing my Iron Rangers my Builderpros came in. They were God awful. My feet have never been in more pain... For like a month. Afterwards you cannot get me out of these 3 pound steel toe monstrosities. Best purchase of 2020.
Like you said, you need to know your feet. If I didn't I wouldn't have taken the chance with Nick's. So my thoughts are if you don't know what you want choose a conservative looking boot from a custom manufacturer. They will set the bar for what you need and want in a good pair of boots. Custom boots have pretty much ruined any of the lower end boots like Thursday for me.

I have similar description of feet; low volume, low instep and skinny heels. Can you tell me some of the lasts that work best for you? You mentioned the Leo last from grant stone; how did you size your diesels relative to your brannock size? thanks.

    • @thevintagefuture6567
      @thevintagefuture6567  3 года назад

Glad to meet another low volume friend! First, what’s your Brannock, including width? All the following fit info is assuming a C or D width. If you’re E width, some of it will change........Leo: 1/2 down from Brannock for me. I’m 10C Brannock and Leo in 9.5D works nicely. Alden Barrie last fits like a dream, also at 1/2 down from Brannock. Alden TruBalance was ok, but I don’t wear it because it was awkward for my foot shape. I hear Plaza last from Alden is great for low instep people, but I haven’t tried it. Viberg 2040 at 1 size down from Brannock is a great fit. Truman P79 is a good fit at 1/2 size down from Brannock, if you like something more roomy like a work boot. My recommendation would be: consider your foot shape, then start by trying a couple of these lasts which seem to look like a similar shape as your foot. Aerial view shots of the lasts are particularly helpful. Grant Stone has those. Brick and Mortar Seattle has great aerial shots of most Alden lasts on their website. Most other Alden sites I find to have lousy pictures, as far as determining what the last actually looks like from different angles. Division Road has good Viberg pictures. Truman has good pictures on their site.....The sizing info I gave you is pretty standard, so don’t let anybody talk you into sizing up or down from that until you’ve tried the sizes I suggested.

@@thevintagefuture6567 Thanks man, I really appreciate the info. I'm between a 9.5 and 10 on the brannock. Also, I'm a D/ boarderline E width. The first pair of boots I ordered was a Thursday captain (sort of what got my interested) and I oredered a half size down from my 10 sneaker and it felt way too big. I sent it back and didn't order again because I realized I didn't like the dressy pointy look of it. Next I ordered a flame panda Moc. While waiting 6 months for that to arrive I ordered a Thoroughgood Moc (for work) went with half size down and found it again way too big. sent it back and didn't order again because there were some painful pressure points where seems overlapped just from trying on. The flame panda's arrived and they were too big in volume and length. Sold them and ordered a Grant Stone Brass boot in a 9D. They are a bit snug width wise but I think they are improving from wear. The overall volume still feels kind of roomy around my ankles and I have to tighten the laces more than I would like. Overall, not bad though and I really dig them. So now I'm looking at the Diesel boots and wondering should I go 9E on those for a bit more toe room or will that mean too roomy around the heel and ankle. I'm in Canada so shipping is expensive and try-on's aren't really an option. Good to know about the Alden Barrie and the Viberg 2040. You're right; it is good to see photos of boots from above. I don't want to order a pair until I know more about my size but the John Lofgren monkey boots really appeal to me and the photo of them from above just looks like the right shape to me. Thanks again, I appreciate the info you are providing with your channel.

Fade masterfade glad to help! And man...I feel so bad for you. So sorry it’s been so frustrating. I feel your pain, cuz my story is the same. I’m glad that I was able to make it through and learn from my sizing frustrations; that’s one reason I wanna help others in the same situation as me. I literally had the exact same experience with many of those boots you mentioned. Anyways....I really need to do a “How to get the right fit” video. I also should do a video specifically for people with low volume feet like us.....Two things real quick regarding fit: don’t worry about extra length. I think you’re trying to make lasts which aren’t for your foot work; you’re doing that by sizing down too much, which creates other issues. The solution is, find a different last. It’s not about length as much as overall alignment. For instance, based on your info, my recommendation is you should try 9.5D or E in Leo, and if it doesn’t work, then move on. For people like us with our skinny feet, fit gymnastics where we size up or down to compensate almost never pans out well. If the size you’re supposed to be wearing doesn’t work, ditch the last. Don’t waste time with inserts and tongue pads etc. Don’t waste time sizing up and down hoping for better results when your Brannock has already indicated the size that should fit correctly. Second, moc toes are supposed to feel big and roomy. Sounds like it’s too much for you (I can relate), so maybe stick with snugger lasts from here on out.....What part of Canada do you live in? Any chance you might be able to go to a Viberg or Alden retailer? The internet games sucks so bad for people like us, until we find something which fits. I prefer going into a store. Once you can find just one last that works great for you (trust me, they’re out there), then you have a comfortable and confident foundation to expand your collection from. Atlier Buck does bespoke boots in Canada....I wonder if you could physically go there and get measured for a pair they make...

@@thevintagefuture6567 I'll be the first one to watch your video on sizing especially for low volume feet. I really like the GS Brass boots and though the fit isn't perfect it's the best I've found so far. I will get a pair of GS in the Leo last but not 100% sure on getting the 9D or E. I'm in Vancouver on the west coast so not too far from Viberg in Victoria. There are a couple stores in town that sell Viberg; I should go see them in person. With the Covid quarantine I haven't been in a store other than for groceries for a year. I hadn't heard of Atelier Buck but I just checked them out and they look interesting. They have a very natural foot shape to them. They are on they other side of the country to me but I like what they are doing. Thanks for all the advice and insights. Keep up the good work :)

But I have about 70 acres of land that i bought that has been neglected that I will be working on. On the weekends. Also I just like wearing boots primarily.

@@onetiretech I would get a Nicks Urban Logger on the 55 last. It’s basically a 6” Builder Pro. Anything more than that is overkill for what you’re doing. Honestly, even a Nicks Robert with a V700 (v-bar) sole is probably just fine for what you will be doing. Get something like that if you don’t need the huge lug sole. The Wesco is great too, but it’s just different. Personally, I find lace-to-toe sorta boots (or something like the Jobmaster which has extended facings) to be excessive unless your job requires maximal stability.
