This tutorial is great! I used this video to straighten the ridge and walls of my summer cottage, and it worked great! I replaced all the rafter ties and then bolted them in the middle before releasing the jacks and comealongs. Thank you!

my garage is in the same boat, ill have to try this method while also replacing my main header. a contractor before me used 2 separate pieces of lumber for it so naturally, ive been watching that gap grow bigger and bigger. Great video!
Here’s a tip: use more jacks and better comealong anchoring than I did!

Use very heavy duty anchors on the walls! The weak ones I used broke…that coulda been ugly!

I have an old barn with the same issues. I plan to re-side it as well so will have no issue cutting holes in the wall to anchor the come alongs to the outside. I may try threaded rod instead though. Great vid, thanks!
Yeah, cutting holes and grabbing around a stud is a much more safe and solid way to do it...good luck!

That was cool video i have an older garage to and am going to be doing something similar when the snow melts off the roof. The previous owner setup a system using 3 2x10"s together across the middle of the garage and had steel box channels on the block walls under the 2x10"s and 1" round stock running across from both sides meeting in the middle with turnbuckles. Then like 6' from center on each side is a plate welded between the two pieces of round stock so when you turn the turn buckles it allows the middle to pivot and lift the roof.

I would have put a 2x4 on the outside of the garage and then screwed my hooks into the 2x4 to distribute the pulling force from the come-a-longs across more area.
That definitely would have worked better, but I didn’t want to damage the siding on the outside. I’ve also pulled walls together by cutting a hole in the wall and wrapping the come-alongside around the plate...but that obviously involves siding repairs
Awesome video this exactly whats happening. I acquired a church from my grandfather after his passing in 2017. So of course everything has been stolen out of the church. So one of his children came and attempted to take the building not sure who she had in there but the removed the beams that. Ran from the ceiling to the floor. The bow is appearing the roof is sagging. And to top things off ... Never mind. Im going. To use this method.

I can't really see a better way of doing it. Maybe just some more jacks and come alongs but that's just more stuff to drag out there
I have a garage with a second floor. Has a cracked rafter and a crooked wall. How would you recommend doing this from the second story, an additional wall built under where I jack from?
Probably, any lift point should have it’s load transferred all the way to the foundation or slab.
OMG I gotta do my garage, it’s a 24’ by 75’ with three support columns all laid at least 40 years ago. My issue is the roof is a pitched roof and the columns support the middle of the garage roof where all the joists have sagged. I wanna take a column out and install a manufactured board across from the side wall to the middle joist so I can pull equipment into the garage.

How did you attach the straps to the wall? The screwed in hooks?
Yeah, and the hooks were terribly undersized...which is why one failed. But I lived, and I learned!

I think my rafter ties were installed AFTER the roof sagged. So once I ran tire chains from wall to wall with a turnbuckle and started jacking I realized I needed to cut the nails fastening one tie end on each so the garage could move back.
Yep, you gotta free up the cross ties or else stuff won’t move👍

I just used some J style hooks, which was a bad idea because they were way undersized and one catastrophically failed.
I am in need of assistance.
I bought my first house last month. I have this problem with my double detached garage. The roof is sagging and the walls are bowing out. The garage had too much weight placed on the rafter ties. The rafter ties are 2x4. I have removed all the weight now. I have examined that all of the rafter ties on one side have detached. I also have 2x6 attached to the rafter ties to the roof vertically. There are 2 post attaching from the cement floor to one of the rafter ties in the middle of the garage. The previous owner removed 1 of 2 post in the middle of the garage. Im guessing they dont want to deal with that when driving in. Do i still need to put back the middle post once I get the rafter ties and colar ties? No leaks, or water damage as the roof/shingles was replaced back in 2020.

Do I need to remove the garage door or just leave them closed?

I feel like I can do this repair, I just need the correct materials/names of them to buy them.

To put it simply, if you do it like I did, use more comealongs, more jacks, and heavier duty attachments to the plates.
Do you have to remove the garage door? Or can just keep it closed? Or is the steel support for the tracks just need to be detached and readjusted afterwards?
It was getting new doors, that’s why I removed them. I’m not sure if leaving the doors during the repair would work or not.
Did you see any movement in the roofing at all?
If you mean the actual shingles, no, there wasn’t any movement in them...at least nothing of consequence.

But I was referring to the joists, not the rafters.

Why not do a ledger with structure screws with 600lb shear instead of drywall screws then pull on the walls good god man,the ledger serves three purpose.just sayin,then you wouldn’t have to be so quiet and move so slow to keep the joists from falling on your head 👍🏻

are you kidding me you're using straps 🤔 , using tow straps are you kidding me you never use anything that flexes you're asking for trouble. for one you use chains they don't flex I've done 300 garages easy, it's all I do. and you never nail your 2x4 side by side you always make a buck. they never bend, as far as bottle Jack's I use them if they're very low profile a lot of times they'll pop out if you have them in a slight angle if possible use it for Jack which can be used most of the time. also you never drill in to the top plate or use eye screws or anything like that you'll split the top plates and I'm a little old school but you pull the board off and you go around the top plate and the stud then you know nothing's going to split or crack it's a whole lot safer, watching this guy is 🤣 funny, he's jacking the garage up the ridge plate and the strap falls off then he says oh I got to rethink this if you would have used chains your straps were never fell off LOL I think I'm going to do some RUclips videos

I'll say this, I thought it was interesting the reply, the elongated reply came from a channel that doesn't have a single video on it. Cheers for your going into this by listening to the creeks and moving things in a common sense manner. Yes, you didn't have everything you needed but it got done didn't it? With a little bit of added adrenaline :)
