Love this and interesting timing as I have recently unearthed my M.Graham Gouache tubes that I’ve had for years and never really used. I had also picked up a smaller Holbein set to offset the M. Graham colors as well as a few more full size Holbein colors. Now, to learn what you’re talking about regarding the water amounts being so much different than Watercolor. Another reason why I got out the gouache is I have introduced watercolors to our granddaughters but that wasn’t their medium so got out the the acrylics and that turned out to be “too thick”. 15yr. old Luciana recently had 5 art pieces in her school show and what did I see…one painted with gouache and she loves it! Now that I have what at least one likes, maybe they will join me more with art.
I've given away every set of Himi gouache but one, and I'm saving it for when my kids and grands come to paint. A set of Daniel Smith primaries is on the way, but mostly I use M Graham, Holbein, W&N, Maimeri (1 tube of red to test it), and Arteza. I love all those brands, and really enjoy painting tea bags, cards and small paintings in gouache. I love its opaqueness and bright colors. It took me a while to learn about consistency, layering etc. I enjoy going back and forth between gouache and watercolor...I never get tired of either one that way. I was happy with the Himi and very affordable for those that cannot afford Holbein, W&N or Daniel Smith and are just starting out with gouache, no matter what age they are. There are people who would appreciate Himi. Let others be the judge. Keep creating 💙💜💛
I know others might be happy with it, but I for the life of me cannot figure out how anybody even paints with it. Nothing would work. It felt like spreading jelly on paper and I’m not sure how much that would teach me about anything. (originally I figured maybe all my learning should be with the cheap stuff but that didn’t work out.)
Himi and the other jelly brands like them are designed for a specific reason in Asia - they are for students in art classes where they place them on a table and groups use the same palette. They are generally not intended for mixing, (hence sometimes you see like 56 colors) because they are often used in timed tests and the students are expected to get the painting completed without spending a lot of time mixing colors. I think they are plenty fun for slapping on paper.
@@starr-starr that makes a weird kind of sense. I found is I wouldn’t ever choose most any of the colors provided, forcing me to mix, and mixing was a hot mess. The color that was missing when they gave me two of another color might have mixed ok.
I have a guestion! I really like painting in all different mediums and styles as well. But if I am really hoping to improve my skills do I need to just focus on one medium? Am I delaying progress by dabbling in too many mediums? Your sunflowers are beautiful!!
Not that I'm thinking of adding another medium, but I always trust your comments on the paints you test. I have learned many years ago that trying to learn with cheap materials is never a good idea. You get frustrated and think it you doing something wrong, when really it's the materials. Love the sunflower. Always makes me think of Ukraine and how they are still fighting a war😔. TFS
That’s hard to say-I rotate among mediums and I keep growing, but I’m also only truly proficient in alcohol markers and pencil. It probably depends on the kind of person you are. If only found one medium bores you, don’t do that 🤣 Maybe try a month in each-and see how you feel and how you grew. They might help!
Oh, phew. I was thiiiiiis close to buying a HIMI set based on another artist’s recommendation and it was on sale at a good price. I ultimately abandoned my cart because I was learning that gouache isn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I think for now I will just get a tube of white and try the new Tiaras and Tutus class. Thanks for doing all of the experimenting!
It’s easy IF you just want to make the kind of scenes a lot of people do. They feel a bit like paint by number….and I want to make the kind of art I usually do ❤️

Did your Himi paints have a smell? I am saving up to buy some gouache and I've seen a lot of youtube artists using the Himi gouache. But no one mentions if there is a smell.
I think all gouache might have a little smell; it’s not strong like alcohol marker though. And I notice it most when using a baby wipe to clean my palette! The Costco wipes disagree with gouache🤣

Yes gouache is kind of in the middle, though you could add enough water to acrylics and get a similar affect 😍

I was wishing the DS intro set was more like WN-with warm and cools. But that makes it pricier. What do you think of the M Graham?

Himi is not cheap here in Australia ive picked up tubes of W & N, Schminke and Holbein extremely cheaply and i'll stick to them.
