I saw once that if every tragedy has a comedy then that's what Coppélia is to Gisselle. A story about disguises,deception,and love. Although very different when looked at more deeply,it is a comparison that never quite left me.
Thank you for a thoughtful precis of this ballet. I personally believe that Coppelia isn't staged very often because it is technically very challenging for both the lead dancers and the corps de ballet. I saw this ballet live decades ago when Eric Bruhn staged it for Canada's National Ballet. Bruhn portrayed Dr. Coppelius and the result was quite dramatic -- even somewhat dark -- for a comedy. Stars & cast alike were perfection!
