Those gangs are full of holes. When they're produced, the Polly is formed to the holes and the many holes are for extra bonding. But not horribly strong and may snap with vigorous use. I still want to buy a couple more designs.
You got the right attitude towards that thing Take some lengh off it ad a ranger band over that poly propaline handle and a scabbard rather than a sheath will perform better....get yerself a scramma you will love it , sending you love from the uk
I added bicycle tubing to my tactical tanto machete (13 inch version) and although it did add nice grip, it ripped skin off my hands when doing sword spinning. I would recommend Tsuka parachord wrapping instead.

It's a Samurai Machete and that's hard to beat. It kick tale.

Thanks. Ive made a scabbard sence this vid out of 1.25 pipe...heated and flattened. And put a length of tube on the upper portion of the handel.
👍🏻kinda late(4yrs) but I just made video on how I customized mine some yrs ago. Still just a fun toy but much more usable for me now.

I added a 5 inch peace on the upper part of the handle. It feels good. But i havent used it yet
