These shovels seem like a good necessity item to have stored in a truck box. Great story Lynn shared about the design and origin of his shovel. Another great throw at the end, Stickman. Thanks Cold Steel.
Lynn is also 70+ and is the man that gave us cold steel and has been crazy since his beginning and love the guy for what makes and wish could meet almost a president in my because I love everything he has ever made
100% agreed. When he sold the company.... it hit me like a dear loved one dying. 😫 I've been a fan at least 30 years. I have at least 150 of their products. At least 60 or so are blade types. I've never once been even 1% disappointed. My oldest knife is my Vaquero Grande 6 inch serrated folder. I carry it EDC in my right pocket. It is my best friend. ❤
I bought one years ago. Luv it. I’ve used it to dig latrines, pit shelters, coyote wells, hammer stakes, cut, split, make shavings, scrape, manage camp fires, and move pots. With the Cordura sheath it’s a great self defense tool. I did shorten my handle to make the shovel’s length at about 17 inches. Easier to chop and pack along. Pre drilled two holes in my hiking staff to turn the shovel into a long handled shovel.
I love both of your shovel models, my first Cold Steel was the Special Forces Shovel back in 1996. And it's still going strong. Cold steel tools are the toughest I have. 👍👍
Love my shovel to bits. Dug a 5 foot hold in garden with it, cut down small trees and even kept it on my person (along with a flashlight) when I heard noises at night. Apart from the raw penetrative power when digging into soil, it doesn't master any particular task but it's amazingly competent at multiple things at once. Excellent for camping and despite its weight it's actually a weight saving tool as you no longer need to carry a hatchet or a hammer. You also feel very safe carrying the thing because of the three sharpened edges, every move you make has the possibility to injure the attacker and you outrange a knife wielding opponent.
I got one of these years ago. Decades in fact. I’ve bought others and gave them as gifts to friends. I’ve used mine to cut firewood, drive tent stakes, dig fire pits, put coals on Dutch oven lids to cook camp biscuits, dig tires out of cars that sank into wet ground and a bunch of other tasks. This shovel is one hell of a tool for the money. I had to replace the handle of mine about 15 years ago. But the shovel is still going strong. I gave my youngest son one to use when he goes camping. He hasn’t ever left it at home. It’s the one thing he says he would never leave behind when he goes out to the woods.
This thing kicks ass. Hell, you could build an entire company just on this one product; I've never met anyone who used this thing who didn't think it worked well.
I have 4 of them, gave one as a gift, one in the truck, one in my camping gear, one in the gardening supplies. LOVE these things. I'd never ever ever considered bringing a shovel on a camping trip but once I did I found a 1000 uses for it. And they're dirt cheap.
One of my favorite all-time tools. I don’t have this particular one and the one I had finally broke after years of chopping, clearing out brush and digging. I would love to get my hands on this one because I know it will never fail and the reason is because it’s made by Cold Steel. Keep up the awesome work Stick and Lynn.
It's based on the WW1 Austrian and German field spade. If you read All's Quiet on the Western Front, this is the spade Katz told him to carry instead of his rifle. I love mine.
Man, my friends and I grew up watching Cold Steel vids with Lynn showcasing EVERYTHING. The coolest guy ever. Now so many years later watching this vid that showed up on my feed just brings back so many memories…. Happy memories but also a reminder of how time goes by. Lynn is still doing his thing and still so passionate. Where did the time go!
I have an original Russian Army issue shovel. It's a bit smaller than the Spetsnaz shovel but performs just as well. I have all four edges sharpened and the handle sanded and coated in wax. Does just fine and I only paid $20 for it
I won't ever be without one. I mod the handle a little bit and I've done so much work with these over the years. I'd choose it over a lot of tools. Actually I was digging a trench a few weeks ago and this thing saved the day. I just couldn't make any headway it seemed with even the pick in certain places. This shovel was able to get in there and cut through the frozen ground pretty well. Really got the job done. Dinged the edge all to pieces but nothing that a few minutes with a needle file couldn't fix.

I've used the CSSFS for over 20 years. It may be the single most practical and useful cutting implement to carry, especially if you're limiting overall carry weight on an outing. I also have their Trench Shovel, which has a slightly longer handle. That's great as a vehicle -carried tool.
It really is a lot of fun! Cutting and digging both! It is very well balanced! I want to juggle it like clubs but I only have one and my juggling days are behind me!
Я из России и мы используем эти малые саперные лопаты. Это инструмент на все случаи жизни. Но на самом деле оно обрасло легендам и спецназ не использует его в бою))
Excellent video! Excellent tool for when the SHTF. I got mine with the cordura sheath/clam pack, necessary if you take any part of the sharp cutting edge to the next level. Great for those that like to mod/upgrade their kit.
I have multiple shovels and the long Spetznaz shovel variant. Absolutely great tools and weapons. Be careful because these will absolutely flay your arm open if you don't respect them.
At first I was undecided about buying one of these shovels. The fact that it chops wood, can be used as a weapon, or scrape the paint off and use it as a skillet, is not really that impressive. But then I see Big Hoss throw it like a tomahawk and hit that bag of flour hanging in the air... SOLD! I immediately bought three of 'em.
I have both of the Cold Steel Shovels and am extremely impressed by their superb quality and practicality. Whilst they are indeed quite versatile tools I'll stick with my Gransfors Bruks Mini and Wildlife Hatchets, Small Forest Axe and Silky Big Boy Outback Saw as I have no interest whatsoever in using my shovels as axes (even though these shovels have proven themselves to be really rather good in that role). Its certainly nice to know that I could actually use the shovels in this way, should I not have access to my GB and Silky tools.
I have a special forces shovel in each of my cars. They can hack through ice, dig snow, and I’ve chopped branches with it. One time I held it while the wrong guy came way too close to me in the hood. I explained to him “You can take a man’s head off with this…if you know what you’re doing.” He got the message.

You should see the price rise with the popularity of these shovels where I come from. Over a $100 dollars now. I bought mine a few years ago at $75. Well worth it though.
WOW amazing, I'm always looking for a multi tool/weapon,opposed to single function items. Reasonably priced too, reckon if I don't win give away then I'll buy it.
Big fan of it here (have 2), but it’s not without some minor flaws. It handles surprisingly heavy and can be a bit unwieldy. In that sense it is somewhat inferior to most CS short machetes for use as a SD weapon. The stock handle can be a little thinner in my opinion. Unless you have large hands, it’s not exactly very grippy.
45 miles in and 4500ft up into the AZ foothills I realized I had rushed out and left my BBB(Big Bag of Blades) at home which had my saw, camp axe and large blades. I keep a CS Bushman and SF Shovel in my vehicle so I pressed them into service. I did use it as an axe, split wood, for cleaning brush as well as digging out fire pit, moving coals (no I didn’t cook on it Stickman) and siring, covering the ash before leaving. Is it better than the proper axe or saw, well no. Can I do the job better than you think it would especially in a pinch, a resounding yes! And yes I rather have this with me as a one tool option than to dig with a camp axe or a saw! So give the choice of what gets left … well next time I check my gear more closely …but it very doable with just these as large tool set.
These shovels seem like a good necessity item to have stored in a truck box. Great story Lynn shared about the design and origin of his shovel. Another great throw at the end, Stickman. Thanks Cold Steel.
