Still trying to figure out why you went for a shovel from the start but ok, still cool. I prefer a solid steel mini bat, I ground and polished myself from scrap metal. It's just a 2 foot long 1 and a half inch thick length of round steel bar with a wrapped handle shaped into it and some holes along its length to reduce weight and air resistance. Pretty hefty, good for tight spaces, and won't accidentally slice me in my sleep.

I served in the U.S. army as an infantryman, we were issued a folding shovel similar to the one in the video, we referred to it as an E tool, short for entrenching tool, one feature you may not be aware of, is when doing your business in nature, you dig the hole, fold the “blade” 90 deg. Tighten the collar, place the handle loop on the ground and sit (half way) on the back of the blade while completing the transaction, then use the folded shovel to cover your “tracks”

I grow Carolina reaper peppers (see my pic) And made beef jerky spiced with one pepper for a backpacking trip and that was enough apparently so that when I went #2 it would only come out as acid lava that could not be retained by a little hole but spread out over the wild like Jackson pollock paintings. I felt uneasy and my hairs were standing on end. I kept looking around but could not see anything (weak flashlight for up close inspection work). My coworker heads over to the area just beyond ours in a truck and radios back that there is a big mountain lion that was just off the side of the road 100 yards away. The only thing besides a pocket knife I had was the cold steel shovel. It aint much against a lion but holding that thing with me was the only comfort I had besides Jesus as I had to finish my work. I knew I at least had a small chance of catching it in the head if it charged me and that was enough to help me finish work. I pick cold steel and always will.

Your average Joe might be caught short in such a situation, but not tactical EDC man. He has his tactical shovel and can whip up a defensive trench and foxhole network in just a few hours. He has his tactical altoids tin in which he keeps his tactical razor wire and tactical caltrops. His tactical EDC pouch contains tactical amphetamines to keep his mind sharp during these surprise tactical situations. On his tactical belt is a tactical fixed blade and a tactical multitool, and his tactical belt buckle is also a tactical knife. In just one afternoon he has tactically batoned enough logs to build a tactical blockhouse. Using his tactical keychain Swiss Army Knife and the tactical metalworking kit in his tactical backpack he has constructed a tactical .50 caliber M2 Browning machinegun nest. Tactically he routs the ruffians with precision tactical firepower and tactical combat manoeuvres he learned from his tactical tactics notebook. EDC man can rest safe knowing he has saved another day by the power of tactical carry gear.

The Cold Steel shovel has been my go to for years now, and with this and a good knife, I have never felt underequipped. I find the CS shovel to be a very capable shovel/hatchet/machete. I like to carry the shovel in hand when I hike, so I painted it orange, so that it looks like a tool and not a weapon when I encounter other people on the trail. EDIT: I've gotten a number of comments that suggest that people are interpreting what I said to mean that I think of the cold steel shovel as a weapon and I'm disguising it so people won't know that I'm carrying a weapon when I hike. That's not really what I meant. What I meant was, I think of it as a tool but scaredy-scat snowflakes sometimes see it as a weapon, especially when I encounter them in the woods. So that's why I painted it orange, so it would be less intimidating. ;)

While serving in the Bundeswehr, I used the trifolding shovel quite a bit. You should have mentioned, that the head can be fixed in two positions: as a shovel or a pickaxe, which is quite useful, when digging in heavy soil. Its a quite versatile and sturdy piece of equipment - digging, prying or splitting wood (with the tip of the shovel and a baton) works quite well, using it as an axe creates terrible handshock but is possible. The legend says, its an incredible weapon for hand-to-hand combat, but i cannot confirm that... They will take a lot of abuse, but are not indestructible, the weak spot are the four rivets, connecting the shovel blade to the hinge mechanism - mine broke at that point after prolonged use as a prybar and pickaxe ;)

I have looked at the German all metal folding shovels, but having just bought the Spetznaz, I don't particularly have a need for it.
The Spetznaz version will accompany me Packrafting for its ability to do double duty as a paddle.

    @nirfz 2 года назад +15

:-D During my conscript time, we had a mixture of the two. Imagine the cold steel one but with the folding mechanism of the NATO one where the shovelhead and the handle are connected.
It's like a multitool compared to dedicated tools. -> better than nothing, but not even close to as good to use as dedicated tools for the job. So i didn't think many people would go so far and buy these items. (I man ok if you are offroading or camping and space is a real issue it makes some sense)
Even our NCO told us: "This little spade is to dig foxholes and trenches if you don't have any other tools, but more importantly, it's the best close quaters weapon you are issued. It has proven itself in two world wars." (To put that in context: we were issued a field knife...)

Being a former United States Marine I can honestly say that the folding show does come in quite handy especially for let's say what we call pick digging where we turn the head of the shovel to where it looks like a letter l and it's tighten it down real tight and use it that way excellent as for being straight it does work very well however it does have a tendency of listening up over a period of time using it digging with it as in you would a regular shovel. Plus the twisting from side to side of the several blade does have a tendency depending on what model you have that blade of the shovel can bend. That being said it's an excellent tool except for the twisting of the blade from time to time or the mechanisms of where you tighten it down loosening up or bending. However you cannot throw it like you can Cold steel shovel you can't do that twisting a little bit from side to side even though with a cold steel shovel it's just one straight handle and doesn't give you the ability to be able to dig the way you can with the handle of the folding shovel. That being said if you're really going to go out in the woods and you're going to spend some time out there by both of these shovels they come incredibly handy and they will not let you down as long as you basically are not trying to seriously kill the shovel.

The bonus for the Cold Steel shovel is that if the handle breaks in the woods you can bootleg a new handle with a decently thick branch. I have both a folding and the Cold Steel one, my dad's idea of camping kinda had a hand in the purchase of both..my dad, back when he could go camping when I was a young lad and he wasn't a long haul trucker, never involved a payed for camp ground..he preferred to go onto a backroad near where his mother and father lived out in the boonies and then drive about twenty or so minutes up the dirt road from that, pull off to the side of the road, and then we all grab the camping gear and hike..oh..bout a mile or two deep into the woods to a creek where we'd set up camp. He likes traditional old school camping. I'm of the same mind..just with a cot to get me off the ground in my sleeping bag..so having two good small shovels that can take a beating come in handy.

The finish on the handle has not held up well to the elements in the 10 months it's been up there and I plan to refinish it with a better varnish. Other than that sweet shovel!

If you’re looking to make more non-knoife content, would you consider some flavor of folding saw? Currently the most in-depth treatise on the subject is by The Reverend Doctor Colonel Nutnfancy Esquire III and it’s time a challenger gave us something more coherent and humorous than his ramblings

From experience in the Army I can say I don't care for the tri fold. They're a pain to open and close sometimes and that aluminum handle can wear out and snap off on the triangle part fairly easy after a while, then whole thing is useless cause it won't be able to keep enough tension to keep the rest of the handle rigid. But we used and abused them pretty harshly as needed so take it how you like. Just my 2 cents.

The mid 00’s US Army issued tri-fold shovel (Gerber manufactured) would constantly work itself loose at the hinges and bust knuckles during use. I guess the German’s figured this out since your hands don’t look like they were caught in heavy machinery.

Was issued and, later, purchased the NATO shovel. Purchased the “Spetznaz” shovel. Neither holds a candle to the WW I/WW II German style trench shovel (fixed square-tipped blade on a straight shaft handle with a palm swelling to hold onto). File sharpen the tip edge so the tool can cut roots or shave bark; file sharpen the side edges so you can chop wood, take down small trees, or dis-arm your foe. German trench raiders during WW I armed themselves with pistols, hand grenades, and their shovel properly sharpened. Oh, yes, the slightly rounded back of the blade allowed the subduing and taking of a prisoner without permanent damage. The only real advantages the NATO shovel has are compactness and the ability to right-angle the blade for “picking” a hole in frozen ground; otherwise, the spade handle is offset enough to make chopping awkward. The “Spetznaz” is similar to and prettier than the trench shovel, but less sturdily built.

I've had my Cold Steel Shovel for so long I totally forgot it looked anything like that new!
I've had them both as well. But I had my Cold Steel "Zapirka" first about 12+ years ago and I still have it to this day. Can't remember who I gave the Trifold to.
The Zapirka has been blunted and sharpened so many times it's become noticeably smaller the wood is probably due to be replaced but it's not weak. The Gardner, my mother, neighbors, everyone asks to use it and they all ask where to get one.
No other options here to cast except for how much I love mine and it goes with me everywhere I can take it (Usually at least always in my car).
