- This episode takes me back out onto the streets of Sydney to focus purely on monochromatic photography, using some new vintage lenses I picked up for the Canon 5D classic!
Thanks to Jeff and Houman for the inspiration

I have been primarily shooting in monochrome for 22 years for mostly portraits and street photography. Then during the pandemic I got into macro photography in color and I haven’t taken any pictures in monochrome since. I’m now obsessed shooting in color.
Just as colour can be a visual distraction, obtrusive music can take away the impact away from an image - photography is a VISUAL medium after all. Just because you CAN add an audio track it doesn't mean you HAVE to - let the photos tell the story!
Other than that, cracking video man, some great, congtrasty B&W photography.
Appreciate it 😁
Love to see it! Great vid man, nice to hear your thoughts and experiences on black and white photography! 👏🏾👏🏾
Thanks man ❤️❤️ appreciate you opening up my eyes!! Keen to head out again soon 📸
Nice pictures, I got all my Zuiko lens on my 5D too.
You're on the right path! Keep at it - you'll get there!
Yes! Thank you!
Sensational images. That style of B&W street photography with deep blacks and heavy shadows is perfection. Btw, that Nikon E lens, while very good, was their consumer “economy” line. Maybe try a Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 AIS, they are outstanding. Kudos.
Thank you Markus, really appreciate the comments 🥰 I am considering the upgrade in future!
Love your shots, and I have a very similar setup. I bought a 5dc in the last months and have been shooting a variety of vintage glass. My favourites are a Takumar 55mm 1.8 and a OM Zuiko 50mm 1.8. Both are very cheap and excellently made so they focus really smoothly.
My 5d stopped autofocusing years ago, but I love the sensor that much, I've only adapted lenses since. Look into magic lantern firmware. The 5d version has focus peaking during image review, since no live view, so at least you know if you should reshoot.
That does sound handy to have, the challenge I find when using adapted glass is knowing if I hit focus, often just having to trust myself. I'll check out Magic Lantern for sure!
What adapter did you use for your Nikon lens?
Great video! I've never used a vintage lens on my 5D. Maybe I'll try it, looks very nice!
Thank you! It's a fun experience, just make sure to get an adapter with focusing confirmation
Hey can you help me find the specific lens mount adapter you got?
Vintage prime lens+Good sensor=Artistic monochrome photos❤
Thank you! Great combo!
SOUND LEVELS!
Haha I've made some changes in my later videos to help with consistency
clean that sensor, man!
Hello, can you shoot with in aperture priority with vintage lenses?
Nice piece. As an owner of the 5DC, will have to give this a go! Subbed.
Appreciate the sub! 100% give it a go, it’s a fun way to switch things up
Very nice and informative video. I just ordered a 5d. I have a lot of vintage Nikon glass and I am curious what nik - ef adapter you used with such good results. Thanks
Hey it's a no name adapter I picked up off Ebay ☺️
Beautiful shots man
The 5D classic is on my buying list
Well if you want to enjoy black and white more I advice you to pick an old Nikon Camera with a CCD sensor
You will get amazing shots with this filmic vibe style
I recently bought a Nikon D70s and it’s an amazing old OG Nikon camera
I am sure you will have so much fun if you can pick up an old Nikon
Using an old DSLR on the streets is still worth it even in 2023
I recommend the Nikon D200…
I'm actually considering a CCD sensor to try next, they're great recommendations since ill be able to pair my existing Nikkor glass - thank you for the recommendations!
Great video and great pics
Great pictures mate!
Yo really appreciate that, thank you!!
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, appreciate it!
Great images and video. Thanks for sharing! But I am confused. Did you use a 35mm or 28mm?
Thanks! I believe these were mostly 28mm 🤗
As newbie to Street photography this video was awesome 👍..that 5d classic is a cool camera 📷...btw I have also recently become found of black and white photography..
That’s awesome dude, glad you found it helpful!! B&W is a great way to mix it up on the street (especially in high contrast)
Bro thats a really cool video, I do street photography too and I have been considering the idea to get a 5D classic and a 40mm (but for the moment I use a compact g9X) my question is How do you feel about having a big camera in the streets for street photography? is it comfortable? Do people notice you when taking photos ?
I'm making a follow-up video for this soon! But in short, pairing it with small light primes and using a strap is okay. You do get noticed much more but that's not a bad thing - more detail in my next video!
Hey mate, great video, how did you actually mount that 28mm without some sort of adapter as I couldn’t see one when you held it up, and if so what type?
Yo thank you! I bought it off Ebay, just search for adapters with electronic contacts
I feel the same way about color. Unless it isn’t adding to the photo it can be a distraction.
It makes me sad when I hear my lenses referred to as vintage. I guess Im old now. Or vintage. Lol.
How did you handle focusing manually? Is there a easy way to do it on a DSLR like this? Back when I had a Nikon DSLR I struggled with focusing manually.
With the Canon I use back button focusing, holding it while focusing manually until it confirms focus
It’s a lot easier to focus during the day as well, using higher apertures to increase the focus range
This is cool! Thanks for sharing. May I ask: what's the lease adapter used? thanks
Its an EF to F adapter with electronic confirmation contacts I picked up from EBAY
@@danthe_cameraman do u mind to give me the link please? Thanks
Well done dude. Subbed
Appreciate that man, thank you so much 😊
Do you have problem to fit old smc lens on 5D,my mirror is hitting thecrear.
Unfortunately, I don't have experience with those lenses, I know that not all lenses work with the 5D so best to do some research before committing
I'm really interested in this lens for my Canon 5D Classic. Does it hit the mirror if say, focused to infinity? Very grateful for your reply. Thanks!!!
No issues in my experience with this combo!
@@danthe_cameraman thank youuu
A buddy of mine has a 5D Classic he hasn't used in years. He said I could have it. Honesty, I don't really need another camera, but when I watch videos like this I think I should take him up on his offer.
Take him up on it! It's a fun camera to play around but and it's still quite capable by todays standards
You're probably right. It's a free camera so I can't lose.@@danthe_cameraman
You'll love it bro
I think that's true. This summer, I'll pick that camera up. I've got nothing to lose. @@tenfoldsupplyco5041
By using vintage lenses & 5d classic not having a live view, how do you focus with it?
I typically zone focus on the street but I do have a confirmation chip on the adapter which shows when something is in focus
Which adapter are you using with these lenses?
I'm not sure of the brand exactly but it's an EF to F mount with an AF confirmation chip from Ebay
What is the adapter you are using for the Nikkor lens on the 5D?
It's just a EF to F mount adapter from Ebay - ensure you get one with the AF confirmation chip
@@danthe_cameraman thank you for the advice!
Did you use an adapter for that 28mm?
Yeah I used an EF to Nikon F mount. The adapter I used also has the electronic patch on the back to help with focus confirmation but I don't think it's 100% required for the 28mm unless you're shooting less than F/5.6
Try the Nikkor 50mm f2. It’s magical on the 5D Classic, as is the 50mm f1.4 pre-ai.
I'll have to check this one out! (if my wallet allows it)
What nik - ef adapter did you use. Thanks
Black and white make you LOOK at the photo..
Which adapter did you use ?
I'm using an ef to f mount adapter from EBAY, not sure the brand name exactly. Make sure to pick one up with a AF confirmation chip
If you like B&W contrast why don't you go into the camera menu and add a colored filter. And if you really want an antique look add sepia filter. I do this with my 5D MKii. And vintage Minolta glass. Love it.
I did see you're able to customise in camera, might need to give it a shot (pun intended!)
lol did you really just recommend a sepia filter?
@@mrwashur1991If no one was buying them, they wouldn’t make them.
Never trust a man who holds a little furry animal so close to his mouth😄 Nah. Great video. I only have the 5d Mk ii and was thinking of moving up but have been influenced to try different style of photography instead. I even have a 28mm retro lens already. thank you.
Haha I have changed to a different mic! I appreciate that, thank you - try out different combos to unlock your creativity
