While working on this video, I came across some pretty amazing builds. Sooooo discussion time: If you had an unlimited budget, what would you turn a 240Z-280Z into? Would you give it a full restoration? Or build something like a dragstrip legend? It's pretty impressive how these 50 year old cars are still being used in motorsports. ⛽
I'd make a traditional JDM restomod, N/A high revving RB26 with ITB EFI's and Tomei parts, 6 speed manual, 4.11 gears for acceleration, bolt on flares, some rare Japanese 5 spoke Showa-era wheels upsized to 16", all in that lemon yellow OEM color.
I think mine would be almost EXACTLY the same. Sunburst Yellow was such a great color. I think the only thing I might change would be some Watanabes. They just look so good with the S30's styling.
2 years into restoring my moms 280z, its been in the family for 40 years. My mom traded a 1967 camaro for it that was trashed, now I have both cars. The z-car is almost ready for license plates.
Driving a car around while you're working on it is one thing, but getting those plates on it feels SOOO good. I love that you're restoring a car that's been in the family that long.
got an early 260. I retro fitted the carbs and put a early e88 head with smaller combustion chambers. No smog crap a header and sporty cam. Lots of torque. Its funny people hate on the badge because realistically its a better car then the late 240 that came with the same garbage carbs but not stroked. 90 percent of the parts on a early 260 are 240 parts. Whatever, best driving experience ive ever had
My grandad was a Datson/Nissan and Honda/Yamaha motorcycle dealership owner. I literally grew up there, living right next door, and hanging out with grumpy grease-stained mechanics every day after school... Paul Newman posters sharing wall space with Kenny Roberts on the showroom windows. My uncles each owned/drove Datsun 2000s, and I would much later have a second-hand 260 as my second car, and a 78 280 as my third, roughly 10 years after they'd been initially released. Needless to say, the subject is of some interest. Moreover, as a fledgling content creator (annals of motocross history, a parallel pursuit of sorts) with just a few more subscribers than you after a year of trying... well, I've been oft discouraged and am still weighing continuing the effort. A bit of a bad taste in my mouth, frankly. But you, young man, have certainly earned a new subscriber. Stumbled across this latest, and have went back to binge the previous episodes. Well done. Very, very good composition and execution.
Coming from someone who knows how difficult it is to be a small content creator, this means a lot. Thank you for this. I really hope you stick with it, you seem to have a great channel!
Lived through the oil embargo-what a mess full of stress! BTW, I still have my Pet Rock, it will all be yours one day-LOL. Once again there is a ton of information packed into this video. Loved it.
I was the unofficial owner of a 1974 260Z for a few minutes when I was 9 years old. It was late 1978 and my future sister-in-law wanted a new car but said no one would buy her old car. I said I had saved $7 and offered it to her for the car. She looked at my brother, smiled and said yes. I got the money from my bank, gave it to her and she handed me the keys. I was so happy. I wanted to go sit in my car, so we went outside and I sat in the driver's seat. When we came back in, my brother said to give her back the keys and she handed me back the $7. I didn't want to do it, but I knew that it wasn't a fair deal for her. I knew that cars cost a lot more than that.
These old "Datsun's" look amazing now, the 240 always did but the others like the 510 and pickups, etc., are alll super collectible in my view. Thanks for posting; the video footage of everyday cars are a real treat to see.
The 510 was always my favorite Datsun for the longest time, before I got into Zs. I think it has a truly timeless style, even for being super boxy. It doesn't surprise me at all to see them all growing in popularity these days.
I have a UK market 1976 260Z 2+2 and I love it! In the UK it is the rarest S30 and also the cheapest to buy (due to it's apparent lack if desirability).
I can't believe anyone sleeps on the S30 models, it really blows my mind! I have some fun with it in the video, but I think it's so cool to have a post-1974 260Z just because we didn't have them available here in the US.
Love this video. I love the Zs. The Z31 is my favorite car of all time. I really hope you don a video on it. Nobody really has (it’s always lumped in with the 280zx or given like 5 minutes in a Z history video). A lot of us love them and will definitely watch . Keep up the good work!
Thanks for this! I'm very excited to get to the Z31 because that's the Z-Car I own! This series may have started because I was kind of annoyed no one wanted to talk about how great the Z31 was. Then I decided each generation really deserves some time to shine.
My uncle had a beautiful 240. He told me the 260 and 280 were crap, so I always thought they were! 😂 Even in the 80's and 90's I rarely saw 240's, but 280's were sighted somewhat regularly. Now a friend is restoring a 280! Love the video. Keep it up!
I think it's fair for 240Z owners to be a little annoyed about the regulatory changes that were made to the 260Z/280Zs, so I get where that sentiment came from. They were also sold in lower numbers, which made them all the more coveted as time went on. That being said, I think the 280Zs have found their niche these days and will only continue to grow in desirability. Would be a good time to retore one. :)
The 1975 280Z is the best of the series! MY daily driver for 15 years was the 1972 240Z achieving at 200,000 miles. A buddy or two had ZX models. So in the day when these were fresh models and top of their game, I experienced all three versions. However my sister had the 75' 280, and it was nicer, smoother, and just about indistinguishable in driving, a bit more torque and less power band sensitive, so easier to hurry along. Good review and history. will try the makenmodel sub reddit.
Wow, what a kind thing to say. Really appreciate that. Keeps me going! I'd love to get my hands on one of those Datsun B210s now, but they seem to have completely disappeared from the face of the planet, which is really surprising given how many of them there were.
I love the 5-speed badge. So common for the period that cars would have that. Seems funny by modern standards. Like all the cars in the 80s that sported Turbo badges.
Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing. I've owned both and the 260Z is a much better car. The performance difference is negligible and the build quality is drastically improved. I'd take a 260z over a 240 every day of the week.
I love hearing this perspective because it's so often the other way around. We didn't have the 260Z here in the US long enough for people to really begin appreciating it, I think.
Your editing is just so darn good. Evokes some really great nostalgic feelings. Do you mind if I ask what setup you're using for your VA narration? its so clear.
Such a nice thing to say! I'm still learning, as evidenced by the quality from my first video to this one. And even here I want to try and knock down some of those "S"s going forward. I have an Audio-Technica cardioid condenser mic, but I am eyeing a Rode PodMic to reduce the amount of ambient sound that gets picked up, but they are pricey. I do all of my sound editing using Audacity. My steps are: 1. Noise Reduction 2. Mix Stereo Down to Mono 3. Loudness Normalization 4. Compressor 5. Bass and Treble (boost bass and reduce treble) 6. Noise Gate 7. Noise Reduction (a second time)
Thank you so much! RUclips places so much on subscriber counts, especially when you're small. Every subscriber right now means the world to me and keeps me going.
i love both my 260Z's one they both are early "series 2" 260Z's my first 260Z I just "finished" with adding triple DCOE style cabrs, now this winter ill start on the other thats mopar small block swapped. i personally would never buy a square body s30 or s130 or 2+2 versions.
the 260 is an odd beast. My father had an early one with the smaller 240 like bumpers and my uncle had an later one with the larger 280 style. The differences between the cars went beyond cosmetic though. The early car went like a 240, but with more power and torque. It had all the lightness, but the bigger engine. The later car was softer, with more weight and less power. I think it is the later cars that give the 260 it's bad reputation. I have actually had 240z owners not believe me that the early style 260 even exists.
I was pretty surprised to learn that the 260Z had two (well, three technically) different versions during it's run. It had a long run though, being produced for over a year, so I guess that makes sense. Still, it was a cool fact to learn and share and hopefully more folks will believe you in the future, haha. (Honestly, we should start calling them 260Z Series Is and IIs.)
The B210/Sentra are definitely on my list, which is now starting to get pretty long... haha. Still, the Sentra has always really fascinated me and I think it's too often overlooked. Would love to highlight it a bit.
The 260Z gets a bad rap, and for some valid reasons. I owned one and the Hitachi/SU carbs with all the smog crap hung on them had SHIT for drivability. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 They were also a nightmare to keep tuned compared to the carbs on the 240Z. The F.I. on the 280Z was a MUCH needed improvement.

Nicely done.

@makenmodel Me too. Is it just me, or did Datsuns of this era have a distinct smell inside? Pleasant, but ubiquitous.
I had a 260z 2+2 in the late 90's, my surfboard fit in the back had fat tires could drive on the beach, spewin my mate rolled it lol
I love the idea of a 260Z 2+2 as a surfer car. It would be perfect for that! Really sorry to hear its fate though, yikes. Haha.

I like that people, to this day, think that the 260 was bad. That means that you can buy a nice early 260 for 1/10 the cost of a 240Z.
I own two 1973 Datsun 260z's.

I love hearing these first-hand accounts. Of everything bad I hear about the 260Z, the carbs get brought up the most!

Still not a 240 though. When it came time to sell it, I couldn't GIVE it away...
And EVERYONE changed carbs on the 260 to better ones over the years so basically you got a stroker 240z and a rear sway bar which was a win/win.

They used the Mercedes Benz straight 6 as a template for development of their straight 6. You missed the two tone 1980 10th Anniversary model.
