- "The Bad Guys" pilot / proof of concept made in 2018 by french director Pierre Perifel at Dreamworks.
Director's note :
"This is where it all started 3 and a half years ago. I isolated for a couple months to do a proof of concept for "The Bad Guys" project. It ended up being a fake trailer. We had a first draft of the script, but I wanted to see how it could play on the screen, incorporating the heist genre and my own sense of style, animation and design. I storyboarded the whole thing and shipped it all to my dear John Venzon to cut it together. Obviously, we used temp music and scratch actors, but ultimately this got us far enough to get us moving into the real deal. Sometimes a proof of concept can be the key to bring everyone onto the same page. Lesson learned, and clearly some of the most creative couple months I ever had. The final film isn’t too far off (blast that sound!!)"

it's so crazy that pretty much every gag and shot ended up in the final cut somehow. This was a really successful proof of concept
ikr thats nuts to me. I mean it happens with me too. I get this really good idea for an angle or a joke or just scene. and it always makes it to the end production
I wish they kept that fourth wall break of "Who are you talking to?" "Them." and then they look at the screen because hot damn that's hilarious.
As Mr. Snake sounds....so much more nasal here, haha.
I think it's a bit too cliché, but that's just me. It could work, given they approach it less directly than what was shown in the video, but I'm glad they cut that part out.
for the looks, sounds and the way he moves, Snake was meant to be more "nerdy" than "grumpy", im glad they changed it, it works much better for the movie
0:48 I couldn’t help it when I heard Piranha saying to us “Hola Amigo”
This was almost better than the actual first trailer! I'm honestly quite shocked how similar the first and final product were! I noticed the changes that were made were both good and bad, just small scenes that might've made the movie hit harder than what we originally got. I really liked the fact that they actually *studied* being good instead of only getting one shot at it. People change overtime, not overnight.
All in all, this was a damn good first draft!
I’m just glad that Wolf, Snake, and Piranha have been casted with actors that put their personalities into the characters
0:54 i wish they'd kept this one as an Easter egg to the original books!
actually you are right that would have been pretty cool. and anyone that doesn't get it just thinks its a joke lol
You can tell Lupin the 3rd and Cowboy Beep Bop was a major influence on everything!!!
Omg this is amazing...
Even back in its early phases, the rough for the pilot oozed with charm
Love the usage of Mirwais' "Disco Science" and Yoko Kanno's "Bad Dog No Biscuits" from Cowboy Bebop.
Who were the chars. voices at this point? They were still really fun to listen to =)
Funny enough, they're named after the species they are.
Mr Wolf, Mr Snake, Mr Piranha, Mr Shark and Ms Tarantula.
Yea I'm wondering who the voice actors for this are as well.
I still would've watched it.
Also this feels more like a fusion between the books & the movie we got.
Daaamn, it's incredible how little the final movie changed from this !
The execs at Dreamworks must have really loved it !
Great job, Pierre !
French connection for the win !
I have to say I liked the fox design a little better in this, she's got a bit more detail while in the final version you can barely tell she's a fox
I also like some things of this version of the story, like how you really couldn't tell that Mermelade was the bad guy from the beggining
I really hate to say this...but...
Wolf's intro in the concept art: Arrogant, loudmouth, furious boss
Wolf's intro in the final cut/official movie: Calm, cool, go-with-the-flow leader
I do love the final version of the film. It was so much better
The guy voicing him in the prof of concept (I assume one of the guys working on the film who did it as placeholder) does give Mr.Wolf a hot-headed anime protagonist vibe.
This is way more close to the book then the finished version
I mean the artstyle
I love this animatic! Def gonna study this!
Oh my god this sooo good I love this I love the animatic.and some of the scene you can see know and before I just love it
Snake sounds more different than I remember him to sound like.
I think is because in the book he has almost the same age as wolf
He sounds like Adam Devine.
@@JamesCampbell-uj9dv Ah really? That voice of Snake is really funny XD
Although I'm glad about when the Bad Guys movie came into true fruition, they had Snake to sound more handsome but yea hehe~
@@NikkiRoesslerBFDIFan64 Heh. Felt they nailed it on that on.
@@JamesCampbell-uj9dv Yea
It’s good to know that they included some of this concept project in the Final Cut
this is so sick. seeing real storyboarding. this probably took a long time too
Why the hell do all of the humans look like they crawled out of Steven Universe? Even Ms. Tarantula looks like a Steven Universe character in a certain shot.
Kinda sad they cut out so many of the gag in the final movie. The concept video here shows much more character... still, a fun movie!
Ro I love how they try to help the kitty in the most hilarious way they can 😭😆”LET US HELP YOU!!!!!!!!” Got me laughing 😆
I am actually a huge fan of marmalade's voice in this video, it makes him seem a lot more likeable at first glance before... well, everything.
Snake looks like the same version as the books
The sound effect of Wolf's fall is the exact same as in the movie xDD
Wonder if this movie hits one year, tbh
From the Creators of Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar
0:43 anyone wanna know where did that came from
Does anyone know who voices Wolf in all of this?
Wow. They revealed Marmalade as the villain in the proof of concept.
OMG.....congratulations for this movie 👍😃
I wish they kept Dianes hair tho
The movie was going to be released in 2018
No, it started production in 2018
They STARTED production for this movie in 2018. I guess they wanna scheduled it to 2020,but got delayed 2 times because of the virus
3:20-3:21 music stops
Yay that's my favorite part of this video
April 2022
On 0:31 wolf's voice sounds a little familiar
0:54 wolf assumed turantula’s gender?!
Who voices Mr wolf
bro this is sick why’d they cut this :(
Because Is concept scene, not delete scene
