Had my first jackfruit today!!! Loved it! Bought from a farmer in Thailand. He cut it up for us. Now I know how to do it myself. Thanks for great video!!!.
I have never heard of jackfruit but I happened across this video - OMG!!!! I went to the Asian market here in Colorado Springs and followed your directions on how to tell if it is ripe - it was PERFECT! Thank you for introducing a new fruit to me!
I thought I disliked jackfruit until I tried it again in the tropics. I realized fresh jackfruit tastes nothing like canned jackfruit. Wow, what a huge difference!!! Jackfruit convert right here!
Your video is what made me try jackfruit. I bought one about 4 years ago and I loved it. Put all that I couldn't eat which was a lot, into Tupperware and it lasted about a week, shared it at work with everyone. They had never heard of it.I loved it.
Thanks so much! My kids and I see jackfruit all the time at the fruit stand we go to, and have been wanting to try it. We will definitely be getting one next time! We're going to eat the seeds too. :)
These are a really nice treat. Thanks for introducing me to these. I'll definitely have to buy a whole one soon just for the experience. It looks like an adventure eating one of these things.
I also saved all the seeds and planted tons of Jack fruit seeds when I was in Thailand. That was fun. I also boiled the seeds and made a potato like meal out of them. They taste like potatoes
I am so jealous, I had this a few years ago in Thailand, first time I ever saw or tried it. Can't seem to find it here, but like you its one of my favorite fruits! It is really something special, love it
I found some at an Indian supermarket in NYC - it cost $2 per pound, so they cut and sell it as 1/2 or 1/4 - it takes work, is somewhat sticky to cut it up but it is delicious, sweet and somewhat unusual taste - its where juicy fruit gum originally got its flavor
Thanks John! I just bought Jack Fruit for the first time. I bought 2 giant ones for only $15 at the Produce Terminal. I'm watching your video to learn how to open and eat it. :D
I planted a jackfruit in my yard here in Mexico a couple years ago. This summer while I was in Canada the tree produced two giant jackfruits and I wasn't here to experience them. Bummer. But right now there is a huge one just begging me to pick it! But I have no idea if it's ripe & ready to be picked yet. That's why I'm here. But after watching this video I still don't know..unless I wait for it to fall off. But then maybe my chickens will eat it! So off I go in search of clues. This video made me hungry for fresh Yucca! (as they call jackfruit here) Thanks for the video. :)
When it is ripe you can smell it from like 50m away or more. You do not need to wait for it to fall off the tree... Some varieties are soft and will squash if they are allowed to over-ripe and fall off the tree.
Looks delish. I recently tried durian and really like it. Strong but not unpleasant smell. Mild and surprising taste, I thought. Smell was definitely stronger than flavor. I'll now be on the look out for jackfruit. I love Juicy Fruit gum but never knew where the flavor came from. Thanks, John!
Durian - A very exotic and flavorful fruit. This fruit was found in south eastern Asia, somewhere in Thailand. This fruit is different from the Jack because it has a more bitter taste, hard and moist texture, and has hard to peel, rough and spikey skin. Jackfruit - A very smooth, lightweight fruit, with a bite similar to a mango. This, too was found in south eastern Asia, but in the western part of India. This fruit is cherished among Indains. The skin is flat, thin and edible
Got two large fruits today from a community garden. They were free so I won't complain, but I'm worried they may not be completely ripe. Fingers crossed because this will be my first time having jackfruit.
Thank you for sharing the Jackfruit video, it was well done, informative, and bought me good memories of my childhood! Sorry thou I did not like the taste of JF as a child, probably we didn't know how to eat the fruit. Be safe and well in your informative research trips. Best, Dense.
Those individual orange pods are called ARILS, and they are wonderfully delicious. I boiled some of the seeds and found them edible but not particularly tasty. There must be some way to make them taste good. Durians are similar looking but very different on the inside. The flesh is creamy and really delicious and sweet, but it smells like rotten onions.
Hey John! Keep on growing those seeds. I believe they bare fruit in only two to three years! Although they do get big, I believe they will produce fruit even when relatively small. So maybe you could grow some yourself after all!
Pho 79 has a jack fruit shake that's really good. I was at the Hawaii market and they cut one open and cellophaned it. OMG... I stood there for 10 minutes sniffing the fruit it smelled so good.
For anyone who thought they were better than the jackfruit and used no gloves and/or did not use enough oil....Use an orange citrus based oil cleaner! Had to go through many solvents and household cleaners before I found this magic.
ODD question.. can you make a digestion diet video on the benefits of jackfruit?. Curious on how it affects your digestive tract etc.. thank you so much. man you make me want a fruit and fast!
use any edible vegetable oil on your hands / fingers, in sufficient amount before you open the fruit or you will have a mess. If you can wait open only a very ripe one, if you can tell. the best ones are some times splitting or cracking open on their own as they ripen. the seeds can be cooked after these are dried or as additives in a stew, or in fish or chicken dishes, as you would small red potatoes, these are very edible, Excellent posting. I have been able to get these even in the mid west grocery stores. Thank you
I would describe that rather dry yellow fruit similar to foam like pineapple without the acid, like a hundred different light tropical fruits in one. (maybe that's why its called a Jack fruit... like jack of all fruits er i mean trades) also its similar to how an orange has that white kinda bitter fiber in the middle and in between chunks.
I just tried some this week. Tastes like candy, maybe butterscotch? I just bought a small container. They wanted about 40$ for a whole fruit about that size. And it was very green. Now I'm glad I didn't buy it now that I know more . I should move closer to the coast so I can get a better choice. Thanks John!
Hey John K. thanks I can find you in the garden, and now on travelling. Good fruit for the Asians, the jackfruit. Fresh and not soft like what other posted already overriped.
"jackfruit carcass" LOL! What an interesting natural creation. Amazing! Really happy to see that made u so happy. :-) Out of 20 lbs how many pounds r actually edible?
Did you buy that in Vegas? Somehow I had never seen it sold in the East Coast. I want some... that has got to be my best favorite fruit in the world too. Where can I buy a whole one? The canned ones doesn't compare.. .
We bought one the other day at the farmer's market here in Atlanta. My Husband is from Guyana and he says Jack Fruit tastes awesome. I just can't get past the smell; everyone says it supposed to smell all fruity and I think it smells like finger nail polish remover. I'm guessing it gives off ketones as it ripens. I still have high hopes that it's gona taste better than it smells.
best way to know if the jack fruit is ripen when you could smell the fruit miles away, you know you a ripen fruit. mater fact i just had eatin jack fruit today, yes in usa, nj.
John, Durianrider opened one up and he just peeled it like a banana it was so ripe, also he said that if it has latex it's not ready. Also, will it continue to ripen on my countertop before I open it? I live in Las Vegas and would like to try a really ripe one for my first jackfruit.
Jackfruit is ripe if the cells you eat are almost orange or dark yellow. The lighter the yellow color the less ripe the fruit is. For hand eating like this guy is doing, the fruit should almost be orange or at least dark yellow. Some Asian deserts use the fruit that is less ripe because they don't want the pieces to fall apart and are lighter in color and are a little more chewy.
Anytime i need advice and search for it, John Kohler always has the answer. Thanks dude
Had my first jackfruit today!!! Loved it! Bought from a farmer in Thailand. He cut it up for us. Now I know how to do it myself. Thanks for great video!!!.
So many memories of India when I watched this video. I grew up eating this everyday. Thank you for the nice video!
The taste of different fruits in only one bite from this jackfruit was AMAZING!!
I have never heard of jackfruit but I happened across this video - OMG!!!! I went to the Asian market here in Colorado Springs and followed your directions on how to tell if it is ripe - it was PERFECT! Thank you for introducing a new fruit to me!
I always see this in the market, but this is the first time that I've seen how to consume it. Thanks
So awesome, thanks god for creating all these magnificent fruits and trees.
I thought I disliked jackfruit until I tried it again in the tropics. I realized fresh jackfruit tastes nothing like canned jackfruit. Wow, what a huge difference!!! Jackfruit convert right here!

Thank you, for the information. My next door neighbor has a jackfruit and we never knew what it was. Thanks again John! Keep up the good work.
I thought this was a fake fruit, grown only on Farmville! I'm enjoying all this new information! Thanks you!
For some reason this was on my home feed I have no idea why but I decided to watch it anyway
Jackfruit is a wonderful treat! We're enjoying some right now!
Finally ate a fresh jackfruit and loved it!
bought my first 25lb jackfruit. Thanks for the hot tips. They worked
I've loved this fruit since i was a kid in jamaica. now i live in japan, but introduced my japanese wife to jackfruit in LA. she hooked.
Ha. I didn't know you had another channel. I've been hooked on your growing your greens one for a while now. Cool. I just subscribed to this too.
Thanks so much! My kids and I see jackfruit all the time at the fruit stand we go to, and have been wanting to try it. We will definitely be getting one next time! We're going to eat the seeds too. :)
Thanks John for the tips... I am about to open mine for the first time.
Good job of showing how to eat a jackfruit, Thanks.
I like your videos don't stop
dude all these fruits look so awesome!
Nicely done. I have seen jackfruit at the flea market in St. Petersburg, Florida but had no idea how to eat it.
Finally, I discover the flavor behind JuicyFruit gum. I have wondered ever since I was a child.
These are a really nice treat. Thanks for introducing me to these. I'll definitely have to buy a whole one soon just for the experience. It looks like an adventure eating one of these things.
Great video John, very informative. Thanks

You could always send that Jackfruit to me and I'll let you know if it was fresh or not. : )~ They sound delicious
When it is ripe it will fall off by itself so be patient

You convinced us and we bought one. Awesome!!!

i saw these yesterday at Hong Kong City mall in Houston, they had like 50 of these things sitting there in the grocery store and it smelled amazing!

Nice Video ! I love jack fruit. Thanks for sharing.

it's interesting to see the whole fruit. in stores by me I only see them cut into slices and quartered.
Got two large fruits today from a community garden. They were free so I won't complain, but I'm worried they may not be completely ripe. Fingers crossed because this will be my first time having jackfruit.

Thanks John, great presentation!
Bought our first Jackfruit last night. We should have watched your video first. My husband got latex all over his hands. :)

Jackfruit is really good. I've never bought fresh jackfuit only the canned ones. Now I'm tempted to one next time I go to the Asian market

For anyone who thought they were better than the jackfruit and used no gloves and/or did not use enough oil....Use an orange citrus based oil cleaner! Had to go through many solvents and household cleaners before I found this magic.
Funny how i had to watch a cooking school ad for a raw food channel.
ODD question.. can you make a digestion diet video on the benefits of jackfruit?. Curious on how it affects your digestive tract etc.. thank you so much. man you make me want a fruit and fast!

Jackfruit is okay raw... but I'm a sucker for the fried version. :) (it's a texture thing for me.. I like the texture better when it's fried.)
+WontB Quiet its you! :)
Yup.. How you doing? :)

Mike Younis

WontB Quiet I have never had fried jackfruit, how does it taste? haha

If anyone in the South-east wants some jackfruit, you can find it (when it is in season) at Grand Asia Market in Stallings, NC (Charlotte area).

My husband bought one today, very delicious. The only thing is that he was severely allergic to it.
I've tried it, it really does taste like Juicy Fruit gum.
John what do you think of Soil associations standards. They are meant to be higher than organics??
I just ate a TON of fresh jack fruit...then I found this video :-)
All I ever had was dried jack fruit. Loved it dried but John how much fruit can one obtain to eat from a 20 pound jack fruit.???
I must try some jackfruit
John, Durianrider opened one up and he just peeled it like a banana it was so ripe, also he said that if it has latex it's not ready. Also, will it continue to ripen on my countertop before I open it? I live in Las Vegas and would like to try a really ripe one for my first jackfruit.
