- With Daves Supercharged LS Patrol 99% Complete we head upto FFM HQ to make up a custom Airbox to suit the Harrop Blower on Daves Series 4 Gu Patrol as well as with a 3.5" Stainless exhaust and custom 6l80 Shifter setup with a TB48 auto Console.
Once the fabrication is buttoned up on the car we can hit the key for the first start but it doesn't go to plan! Sometimes the small things can always catch you out and it's a good reminder not to use ya brain and don't forget the simple things. Luckily it was as simple as adding some more ATF and we were good to go!

I HATE CARS! 😀theskidfactory.com
This was my daily motto when I used to be a mechanic 😂
@@theskidfactory already ordered one! I think I'm not far short of the full Skid Factory collection at this point 😅
Dave is such a fabricating wizard, so cool to see. Love laserwelder.
Hats off to the bloke it is great to see people like him out there showing off their skills.
Turbo Yoda hell yeah, Nug loving Woody's direction too
This is a cool build and everyone makes cock ups. The american specs for a 6L80 is 6.5 quarts for a pan off service and 12.2 quarts for a dry fill. That's 11 litres for a dry fill.
Yeah was just a pan off service though that’s the thing! Got it sorted in the end so that’s the main thing!
@@theskidfactory true but you are probably forgetting any that was lost from the converter and oil cooler, assuming neither was new to the car....
@@petelattimer6808 Yeah, I was thinking exactly this, though they probably filled the converter before putting it on, I'd hope. My guess is that the level ran too low after mostly filling up the trans cooler. So they thought it was full because it was pouring out the hole, but once they ran it for a bit, it actually ran low.
WOODIE the m.c. is the bomb !!!!
23:38 You need to flush at least (12-14) Litres of trans fluid through 6L80E + Oil Cooler, if you have installed transmission dry, as 4 Litres is bugger all oil to fill torque converter, pump, and for valve body and all solenoids to work properly.
It wasn’t a dry fill, just a pan off service, there was 6 + Litres in there and when we checked the level it was hosing out the drain bung so we assumed the level was correct!
@@theskidfactory 6+ Litres still isn’t enough to begin with, as the entire system; including, Oil Cooler + Torque Converter, needs at least 12-14 Litres to function properly (depending on size of oil cooler); otherwise, oil pump + valve body will be sucking in air not bled from system etc.
@@DownUnderAUS I agree
Love ya work Woody, never stop learning ay 😂 mistakes are what makes this channel authentic and I'm here for it!
Welcome back to the Woody and gearboxes not getting along factory....
Always awesome to see some Aussie made products 👍😎
Nothing is forever Woody has pivoted it's something different, I for dig it.
Great update Woody.
Thanks for the video.
Love your work Woody! As a mechanic myself, I also know the love hate relationship with cars, but you’re doing great, keep it up bro.
Interesting and imformative as always! Thanks Woody
Another great video. I'm enjoying the collaboration with your mates. 👍
Ah, the good old not enough fluid when you think there should be enough fluid malarkey!!! Had similar on a ZF 5HP19 cos mechanic hadn't followed the BMW fill procedure and the box was 2 litres low. It's alll a learning curve my man 😉
These newer automatics with no dipstick are a bugger. Checking the level and top up used to be a simple thing.
Cheers woody and skid factory family! 😊🤘🤠👍
Online docs say the 6L80/90 take 10 US quarts which in normal units is just over 9 US litres then you have whatever the lines to and from the trans cooler contain.
My brother forgot to take into account the extra when he fitted a trans cooler to his 1989 VW T3. Thankfully just before firing it up and setting off I reminded him.
If you drained the converter when you originally put it all together, they'll take a heap more atf. Those factory 6l80 converters hold like 1.9 litres themselves, let alone the cooler, and lines and crap. Onya dude, love the honesty. Keep it up
Converter was never removed, was basically a pan off service so not a complete dry fill, should’ve only taken 5-6 litres according to auto data and then when we removed the drain plug to check the level it was hosing out!! This was after the fact that we didn’t have drive and topped it up to check the level was right 😂 no idea how there was fluid running out the tube but it threw us off that’s for sure!
@theskidfactory I did a service on an AU XR6 the other week. I have done a few of them before on the BTR 4 speed boxes. 4 litres of TQ95 is usually all you need.
This one caught me out after I put 5 litres in and it was still begging for more oil.
Basically I had the pan off for a few hours doing other jobs etc, turns out it drained most of the convertor and valve body in that time, in the end it took 6 litres of ATF.
If the VF box had been sitting for a while, plus filling the cooler system, 4 litres was never going to be enough.
Also if it has a thermostat in the box, that needs to get to temp to properly bleed the trans and get the level right.
Just glad to see it all worked our in the end!
@theskidfactory shit hey, I'm a mechanic in an automatic specialist shop, so that's where my head went to. They can drain a lot deceptively if left with the pan off. Great result tho! Autos are a weird and whacky thing.
@@JT-4real tq95 is the most disgusting oil in the world. Did a service on a btr the other day. Tc had eaten itself and gotten real hot, burnt everything. I legitimately spewed at the smell.
@sebastiancarrall117 It is the specified oil for the BTR boxes made specifically by Castrol. That oil has been used in the 4 speed boxes for 15+ years.
Like most autos, they don't get serviced and cook the boxes.
I have just done a BT50 today and the oil was the original from factory and had done 200,000kms and was pretty knarly.
Great to see the trans was good, I hate when you think you have stuffed something up and you start second guessing yourself , well done on the build and I’m a Ford man but that sounds awesome nice subtle cammy note 👌
That whine ❤
The main reason people watched the skid factory is because things were "Made". Seems like this content is more about filming other peoples stuff going vroom.
Iv been enjoying this build. Another good vid👍🏻
Cheers Woody.
Much respect Woody awesome work ethic.
Good job Woody! I enjoy the show, thanks for the hard work!
Daves setup/skills 🤯
I did exact same thing with my Barra turb AU, serviced the btr while doing the engine swap, then couldn’t get enough fluid back in it when finally got the engine fired up, got that sorted then pulled it out on sloped driveway and the level dropped with the gradient and lost drive again 😂 hate the whole “warm it up to 50c” thing, hard when you have no exhaust in a residential area haha
Doing a great job Woody, keep it up mate
Excellent work
Keep up the great work Woody 💪
"Genuine Holden Part" Relay bypass wire.
I've got a few of those myself. Always nice to have... though mine I made with a fuse holder so I can test stuff in a fuse box as well.
That ATF level bolt is for stock configurations only. Since you have a cooler, it's all different. I run a Mishimoto cooler and my engine off pan level is higher than stock. Actually, what you need to messure is "Head", while the engine is running. For me, i have a dipstick and fill through the neck. I run it up to temp (81c), go through all the gears and check the level then.
I'm assuming you only have the level bolt. In that case maybe the trick is to messure/guestimate the volume of the cooler and tack a small riser on the level drain, eg: to add an extra 1-1.5L of ATF... whatever you need to keep head in the pan.
Ps: the key is, it's not stock any more and "Use brain", as Al would say.
Keep up good work woodie ❤
Love your work woody, and appreciate this channel so much! But had enough of the patrol factory 😅
Will be a ball tearer on the beach, cool car
nice work bra
You missed the key step in the initial fill which caught you out. That is top it up cycle the gears 1 2nd -6 reverse etc. then check at 50deg. 6ams ZF’s are the same.
Goodonya’s ay…. STRAILYA 🇦🇺⚡️
Didn't expect you Aussies to have that level of vocal fry !
Nice fabrication & very neat TIG welding. The laser welding is next level, I haven't seen it before, certainly a time saver, is the penatration is good a conventional TIG?
You may find and issue with the shifter linkage as it needs to flex with the engine and body on there mounts
I need one of those hats bro 😂
A very wise man once told me "Its not a f#@k up until it cant be fixed..." Awesome build lads, might have to handball me Troll over to you to do a similar heart transplant. Cant wait for the dyno, keep up the great work. P.s. is davo married? i could really use some of his toys in me shed lol
Now get a bonnet without a scoop and slap a Colorado scoop in it. Helps heaps with heat
I would recommend throwing the 6l80 in the bin, I'm on number 4 trans in my lsa swapped colorado with 4x4
FFM will get better light into the factory if he cleans his sky lights :) i overfill my 6L90 by at least a litre due the angle it sits at in the patrol.
i have done the exact same thing on a Pajero
Problem solving at its finest, always check the simple things!
The difference in level is due to the cooler.
That engine sound.
That level needs to be checked when running, after doing a cycle through the gears and fluid temps between 30-50 celsius
Initial fill for that setup should be 7-8 litres to initially gain pressure and to use as a starting point for the filling sequence
Also, if you plan to use it for hard wheeling you’ll need to add 500-700 ml after getting the level right. Otherwise when you point vertical you will lose drive
I'm a bit confused, I thought the reason for the LS supercharger conversion, was to increase the Air Conditioner performance. 😂😂❤❤
Does he make anything cool for that BMW E36 he has on the lift?
Car has to be running to check oil level properly 👍
Yep! Running, 30-50 deg trans temp
Dont forget to check while running
Gday mate 👍
Howdy partner
Ahoy Fizza!
Is Kye on the payroll yet?
I hate that I love cars to woody 😅
That back end try set up 🤔🤔🤷🤷not sure on that
gap between cab and canopy.. (eye twitch)
WHAT BIG ISUZU 300 4X4 WITH 5.2 TUBO DESEL
Custom "airbag" for a toyota? (from the description).
I want a custom airbags on my toyota!! lol thanks for picking that up mate
Using k&n air filters? Bit disappinted.. have you seen the filtration tests on these filters? The airflow not much better either.. you go to a mechanic to recommend best way of doing things..
That tray is ridiculous unless bending the chassis is the goal.
Still miss Al and Wendy from clevo also
In the last few seconds with the bonnet test. Did anybody else notice the braided lines moving Something is touching somewhere !!!!!!
Yeah we had the air box lifted up higher than it needed! Once we dropped it 10mm it clears perfectly!
Was that tap water in the radiator?
Might’ve even been dirty old dam water?
We've done that in all the dealerships I've ever worked. Tap water and coolant 50/50
But what about kevin?
Kev
Where’s AL?
A bit late to the party
Bruh they announced Al would be leaving the skid factory like a year ago.
America, I think
Haven't watched this episode yet, just started with EP1 on this build, I just wanted to say
CAN YOU PLEASE STOP SHITTING PAJEROS 😭
Moist
Should have put a manual box in it.
As much as i appreciate and enjoy watching Woody ,the Skid Factory's content has declined.
Couldn't disagree more. Woody is an awesome host! Yea it's not the same without Al but it's definitely not declined
I disagree mate.
It is a different thing. Woody is doing a good job taking it all on himself.
Good on him
I reckon it's better without Al's negativity
I don't agree with you. He's taking on a big project and it's moving on without Al. The show will never be quite the same without Al but who can expect that? Woody is doing great things in these shows and I'm really happy with what he's doing.
