Tooth and Nail has some good songs but I would place it third of these three. I think Dysfunctional is greatly overlooked. Would probably pick that over Tooth and Nail, too.
Under Locke & Key had the best sound production, full rich sound. Not sure why they didnt keep this same production sound in Back from the Attack which had a thinner, bright, less appealing sound.
I agree. I don't think BFTA sounds bad by any means, but Under Lock & Key sounds amazing. Production wise, for me it's up there with Dr. Feelgood and The Black Album. It sounds perfect.
Jeff and George (maybe along with Mick) wrote Unchain the Night and It's Not Love. George wrote the music for The Hunter. Lightning Strikes was likely a band collaboration. Plus Don says Jeff might come in and write lyrics for a verse on something he started. I think his 80% number is a bit high. Jeff has a writing credit for every song on Tooth and Nail and when you listen to his demos you can tell he was the big difference between the songwriting on the debut and Tooth and Nail, especially regarding vocal melodies. Under Lock and Key had even more of a Jeff sound. I think Jeff likely had a hand in every song on this album as well.
Yeah. I mean, I love Dokken. I think Don is an amazing singer, but the dude is a real low-key sourpuss. I've never heard an interview with him where he wasn't throwing someone under the bus. Dokken is one of the exceptions to the rule of 'hair metal' bands of which a lot were kind of a joke. They were actually good! We played a couple Dokken songs in the band I was with in '84, '85. I always thought Dokken had more of a European sound. A bit like Judas Priest or Accept. Really nothing to do with the LA glam metal thing until much later.
So I love Dokken (even the later albums). But Don kind of contradicts himself here when he says he wrote 80% of the record. Then as they go track by track its, "they brought that song in." I think all songs written by Dokken like the album notes say is probably closer to the truth.
