- These are all 3 scenes from the Saturday Night Fever late 80s and early 90's VHS pressings that wiped out Rick Dees and MFSB because of music rights issues at the time. Back then I hated whatever this library tune was that they kept using cause it didn't fit the scenes or the era...but hearing it again for the first time in nearly 30 years, I actually was diggin it.
It's funny how they just used the same track three times. They didn't even bother to change it up with other tracks from the library.
And this wasn't the only movie that had music replaced for VHS release, many a film had music altered for their VHS release: Airplane 2, A officer and A Gentleman, Sixteen Candles, the list goes on and on
Yeah i remember Weird Science had to replace Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" with the Oingo Boingo theme song.
Ahhh…this music replacement mess goes back a LOOOONG way.
Yep, I have a 1993 VHS release from Paramount, with these replacement tracks. The box has a copyright date of 1991, but the actual cassette has a 1993 date listed. Strangely enough, I have a 1998 VHS release of the infamous PG version of the movie, with the original songs intact! How strange is that?
I bought the PG version VHS around 1990/91 (same time I bought the regular R with the replacement music). And yes, it was strange that the original music was in tact on the PG but not the R! Good to know someone else noticed that too.
I agree.
It is very strange.
@@thevault6757 even stranger was earlier home video releases of the R rated cut had the music intact before the DVD restored everything
What really bothers me is while the newer DVD and Blu-Ray releases of this movie (starting with the 2002 DVD onward) restores all of the original songs used, they replaced most of the original crowd noises (particularly during the climatic dance competition) with newer, more generic stock ones. Worst still, I think the original "unaltered" audio track with all of the original music and crowd noises is lost. I just wish Paramount would find go back and restore the "original" 1977 audio track for the film's 50th anniversary release. Either that or have someone do a fan reconstruction of that audio track using various VHS' from the time.
I have the 1982 Laserdisc which is by far the best "unremastered" print of the film with all original audio in tact (in stereo as well). The picture is as it looked in 1977 without all the digital BS alterations (just reformated for TV screen). It's the closest thing to seeing/hearing it in the theater in the day when playing it through a home stereo system. Way better than VHS, Beta and even DVD. The 1982 LD is the definitive way to watch SNF in my opinion.
Sorry no where as good as the original score. It sounds like practice music until they put the good stuff on later. Still best soundtrack ever.
Thanks for uploading this. I brought this version in 1991. Now I regret selling it after when I went out and bought the DVD with MFSB's 1975 Disco remake of K-Jee. By the way, what's the name of that song?
What's the name of which tune? If you're meaning the library/stock music they're using on this 1991 reissue i'm wanting to know that myself, cause I dig this early 80's sounding library jam even though it doesn't fit the scenes :P
@@thevault6757 Thanks for the info on the song in this late 80's/early 90's VHS reissue. I always thought it sounded like it came out in the mid/late 70's.
I wonder what the name of this song is.
Same here with me too
Why was the music changed
Oh my God! This is horrible! I didn't even know such a travesty existed!
Damn this music is awful
