    An all-1700's English belfry. I haven't seen many of those. Maybe because I watch more German bells. I do somewhat prefer simple swinging to change ringing but I don't mind change ringing either. What I do mind is how a lot of English bells were smashed up for recasting over the centuries and didn't get a chance to last their potential. Not like those at Bamberg or Koln, and so many other churches in Germany.
    The secondary bourdon of Koln is 10 tons and was cast in 1448, and is probably the oldest bell in existence that exceeds that size... It's regarded as the finest bell of it's note, which I agree with. I do think Koln is my favourite belfry out there. The bells there all sound like they belong to the cathedral, that is to say despite not all of them are medieval they do sound like they are with some or all of the distant notes being rather easy to hear, as is the case with most bells from centuries ago...
    As the case for England, the only large Medieval bell we have is the bourdon of Gloucester.
    Quite pathetic compared to Germany but at least we have one, and a few other antique centuries-old bells out there, albeit not as many as Germany as far as I've observed. This is all just my observations... I'm not completely definite. I haven't seen as much English as have I German belfries so...

    Je ne suis pas extrêmement fan de ces cloches, personnellement. Le métal est-il de qualité ? Les cloches sont-elles en profils légers ?

      They are old bells, if they were returned with harmonic Simpson tuning they would sound great.

    • @JamesJoynson
      @JamesJoynson  Год назад

      When they were a peal of 8, they would’ve sounded good. But when William Bilbie augmented the peal to 10 bells, as his bell profile was quite different to Rudhall, he retuned the back 8 to make them sound out of tune so his bells would blend in.

    small tower for a ring of 10 bells they are crammed

      @JamesJoynson  Год назад +2

      Oh no! The bell frame is not up again the walls, there’s more than enough room to augment them to 12 on one level! The tower is huge for a 17cwt 10

    Very nice set of weird sounding bells!

    • @JamesJoynson
      @JamesJoynson  Год назад +1

      Yeah, when William Bilbie augmented the ring to 10, as his bells were completely different profiles to Rudhall, he retuned the Rudhall bells (back 8) so they would sound bad so his bells would blend in, and it has worked.

      @@JamesJoynson Sometimes badly tuned sets should be left alone because modern tuned style bells just sound a bit boring because of overuse.

      The Bilbie trebles came out too flat - so he skirted them like crazy and flattened the others to suit. Apparently the church were happy as he did it very neatly! Lol

    Those trebles are a bit thin!

    • @JamesJoynson
      @JamesJoynson  Год назад

      It’s actually how Bilbie tuned bells. The profiles are not thin, it’s just how he shaped the bottom of the sound bow to scratch-tune them. He’s done the same to the Rudhall bells to make them sound different so his trebles fit in with them.
