I know this is old... but what the hell word salad is this, lol? Also, would you logistically be able to body check every single animal out of hundreds or thousands of sheep in several flocks throughout hundreds or even thousands of acres of land? Do you even feasibly have enough time in the day for that? Flystrike can happen in a matter of hours (as in a day or two, sometimes sooner in humid climates). You're seriously telling me you have your entire gigantic sheep operation outdoors year-round on hundreds of acres and are able to thoroughly check every single individual every single day? Wait, you don't have a several hundred sheep operation? Well, that explains it. 😂
Flystrike in sheep is a myiasis condition, in which domestic sheep are infected by one of several species of flies which are external parasites of sheep.
This happens quickly, within a day or two, and these sheep are out in fields across hundreds of acres. The farmers have to rotate through their flocks and sometimes they can't even reach a certain group because of weather or flooding, so it can take a few days to get to them. It's not neglect, and they aren't letting it suffer. If that were the case the entire sheep would be covered in maggots and probably dying.
I can’t even imagine how you spot that on your livestock on the field. It seems as well the discoloration is quiet hidden under still good looking fur. :/ Poor little sweeties. Isn’t there something one could preventive do? Like powder them in diatomaceous earth? I know it’s stupid to ask. Because if there would be something you would use it. But oh man…I feel for them.
It can be tricky to spot the problem from a distance. Our most recent video actually details how we identify the problem. Check it out here ruclips.net/video/4aPs6VUCKBo/видео.html
Unfortunately flystrike can happen very quickly. This would have escalated from nothing at all in only a few days. We drive through and check our sheep regularly, treating them as soon as we notice an issue.
Flystrike occurs when blowflies lay eggs in warm, moist areas on a sheep and these eggs hatch into maggots, which then invade the living sheep. This can happen in spring, summer or autumn and especially when conditions are humid. Flystrike can be a significant problem for New Zealand sheep farmers. It is estimated that 2-10% of the national flock is affected by flystrike annually and the subsequent economic effects can be measured in the millions of dollars. Farmers in New Zealand spend in excess of $15 million annually on treatments.
The Australian green blowfly lays live maggots on the sheep, they crawl down and start biting and eating the sheep. It only happens to a few, we apply a deturant to most all the sheep to help keep them safe from this happening. Here is a video applying the deturant : ruclips.net/video/L2oWT6JzuQE/видео.html
No, this sheep has a sore. Our sheep never had any type bug on them. It needs a vet or a knowledgeable person to clean out any wound. And give meds to the sheep.
@equine2020 the maggots eat live tissue. The wound you're seeing was caused by the maggots. So since you are so "knowledgeable" google *Lucilia cuprina, formerly named Phaenicia cuprina, the Australian sheep blowfly* and then come back and apologize. Absolutely not. We always treat flystrike right away when we find it. Sometimes we do have to bring the sheep to another part of the farm for treatment. I film my daily tasks, and sometimes that is treating flystrike.
That should have never been done because some of them are being cut in half an hour going to be left inside the body to which an infection can occur. She should have cut it above where any of the maggots were going to be and then got the maggots out of the body and finished sheering. It's just my opinion and how I feel would be the safest for the health of the sheep but to each their own.

Yes they make a antibiotic colored spray that looks like paint.

On large farms it is hard to check the sheep every day. During fly strike season flies can cause this damage in just a few days.
What is the cause for this condition
The Australian blowfly lays eggs on sheep that hatch and cause a wound on the sheep. From there, more flys lay more eggs.

Why would they get maggots
Australian blow flies lay eggs on the sheep that hatch into maggots and then eat the sheep.
Is there supposed to be something called sheep dip
Yes, unfortunately at certain times the offending blowflies simply attack when the deterrent wears off.
