Poor guy, can’t imagine how itchy and painful that must have been. Glad he got taken care of!
I’m SO glad we don’t get fly strike where I am. It’s so nasty. Glad you were able to catch it and treat him!
Where are you that sheep don't get flystrike? I thought it could happen to sheep anywhere.
@@strega_bonnie Vancouver Island. I can’t swear that it can’t happen here, but I’ve never had a case and I’ve never heard of anyone else around here that has.
What do you do for him to recover?
It must be such a relief to get those lousy maggots off. I can't imagine how uncomfortable Rambo had to have been. I hope he's feeling well now.
Looks absolute itchy and full of burn. Terrible
People have NO idea how hard you work and all you do to keep your herd safe and in prime health. There is no way to keep out every case of fly strike and all that anyone can do is just what is shown in this video. Great job ! Peace and blessings 🙏
Poor ram. He must feel such relief now. I can only imagine it is still very irritating even though animals seem to ignore pain much better than we humans. He was definitely suffering previously.
Animals hide their pain so not to appear vulnerable to predators
Man he was ate up with them poor fella glad you saw it and figured it out👍
Poor baby, I am a Licensed a Veterinary tech, and finding maggots is one thing that gives me the creeps, you can hear them eating, and they come out of every where. Can’t stand them! I have seen them literally make it look like Swiss cheese in an animal. Very sad.
Not literally Swiss cheese...
@@BunnySpaceMachine well of course, meant it literally makes it look like Swiss cheese, hope that’s not all you got out of my comment, thanks for the correction.
@@BunnySpaceMachineduh
Rambo has to feel so much better! Thank you ❤️🐑❤️
Awwww- he had it really bad. You take such good care of your animals
Awww poor lad he did get it bad didn’t he! Hope he’s all fixed up and feeling better now xx
This man is the best content creator when it comes to sheep. In other words he's the GOAT😂 I love this channel
Wow! That was terrible. Glad you caught it.
Me too
Hello from New Hampshire, USA. Excellent vids - Glad to see Rambo is going to be feeling better. Thanks for posting. 👍
Gross! That poor critter. Hope he can feel clean and healed again soon!
That looked like a really bad case. Glad he is improving.
Thanks for sharing! Fly strike is some crazy looking stuff!
I have a couple questions. First of all I know the hard work you guys put in in a days work. There's no 9 to 5 for you all... Why does a sheep when infected with fly strike wander off by themselves and why does the skin get so dark around the infected area I noticed when they are sheered? Can it go to another sheep that the infected sheep is just standing by, do they get it too? Are sheep the only one's that get this? Them drones are amazing when it comes to stuff like checking on your flock. Your so gentle when sheering them compared to what I've seen and I'm a huge animal lover so thank you. Amazing dogs and I loved the hand held out front while approaching the Ram to say stop... Don't even try it lol.... Thank you.
Maybe it's like us, sometimes when we feel ill we just want to go lay down and not be bothered.
The dark patch is necrotic skin, blood and sometime dirt.
No the maggots don't move from the one sheep to another like that.
Thanks for your comment!
@@FarmWithMeNZ thank you so much for getting back to me... So true about wandering off by themselves... I know when I feel crappy I just want to be by myself... Thanks again. United States... Salt Lake City Utah... 🐏🐑🦮❣️
@@beckyworthen7136thank you for asking the same questions that I had. I was scrolling looking for this ad not to ask a repeated question.
how did you know that the ram has maggots?
Early spring have the sheep crutched in a shearing shed. "Crutch" means shearing the rear end of the sheep in early spring. Then, inspect sheep in the yards every three weeks in the field, until the sheep are fully shorn the end of the first month of summer.
I'm a wee hobby farmer in the United States. This is the end of my third full year having sheep. I've gotten the shearers in for my (less than 10) sheep the last two years. But this year the girls are all losing their wool in chunks. Well, five out of seven ewes are losing the wool to a greater or lesser degree. One girl lost her wool last year too, and this year, I saw that grimy fly-strike coloration that seems a sign on one of the girls. I don't (or didn't) have shears but I crowded her in a corner and, like the others, she's losing her wool, so I pulled what I could away from the area until it was fully exposed. (about 3 or 4 cm in diameter). I've bought shears since I don't really want to pay three hundred dollars for the shearers to come out and shear 2 whole sheep and five half-naked sheep. I plan to halter tie each ewe and practice first on the one girl who had signs of fly strike. I put some permethrin (spelling, not sure if that's the exact name) on her, but not sure if she's fully over it. I'll be spending Mother's day learning how to do a (likely very bad job of) shearing.
Thank you for sharing. Poor boy. Glad you spotted his need.
Appreciate it. Glad your enjoying the shepherd life, all the best learning to shear them.
Your camera work is excellent !
Kocham ten kanał . Kocham jak strzyszesz zwoje owce i to pokazujesz ❤❤❤❤.
I never seen a sheep with so many maggots
Shocking really
Poor boy, almost his whole body is infected with maggots 😢😢
Poor little guy, thats got to feel a lot better after treatment tho...
When I was a kid we had to put my grandmothers dog down because she had maggots eating her alive under her skin. The vet said it was so bad there was nothing we could do. I still can remember her skin literally crawling. I can't imagine how much she was in pain. She was a good dog.
Sorry to hear that
Poor feller. But he'll be back to handling his business next time around 🌞
Love from America’s Dairyland.
WISCONSIN!!
My heart hurts for him. Poor little dude :(
What! Benched?? Rambo won't enjoy the ladies??? ❤Poor Rambo!!
😅
I'm assuming if left untreated the maggots grow in numbers and they chew and draw blood, plus infection, and things go deteriorate from there?
Seems like it really happens fast.
Wishing for a speedy recovery !
You are 100% correct
I suppose in the World of sheep Rambo gets to say "i was Maggot Blocked" as his excuse for missing out on mating season
정 상태에서 쭉 살아 있다는게 신기하네요..😮완전 대박!!얼마나 답답했을찌...많이 고통스러울듯하네요
How did they treat fly strike a long time ago?
Is it unusual to have two separate infected areas? I have mostly just seen one here on RUclips.
Yeas and no. When they get struck it draws more so it does happen like this occasionally.
I believe Australian sheep farmers put the sheep through a dip solution which helps control flystrike etc.. the heat and millions of flies make the sheep suffer without preventative measures. It is a business so they are protecting the product.
SO GOOD
Wow, that's the worst one I've seen.
You obviously care for and treat these animals well. Does the treatment (some kind of spray it looks like?) just not work well some times?
It wears off over time unfortunately.
Wow. half his body was like that. Good job catching it. Drones kick but.
Jeez I bloody gasped!
Poor baby!
Rambo was not feeling great when he isolated himself
It's a good Indicator!
Is there a “fly season” if you will, that you could shave them for? To keep the flies off the skin? Or does it not help? Just curious as we don’t have fly strike here so I’m ignorant on the subject
The flies are absolutely more active in the summer months. The shearing schedule doesn't always align with this, but for ourselves we are moving to a shedding breed of sheep, partially to reduce the instances of flystrike in our flock. Wool sheep require a lot of additional care and maintenance, and due to the payout from the wool (and wellbeing of the sheep) isn't worth it at this stage.
That makes sense! Well I hope you have better luck with the shedding sheep! I know how hard it is working on a farm and seeing your livestock suffer. I worked with cattle growing up it’s tough but rewarding! I’d imagine that’s how you feel about your flock, tough but rewarding. ☺️
j'ose pas imaginer le calvaire de ce pauvre mouton , c'est l'horreur !!!!
Why does it take so long to find ? Why not shear all of them ?
The wool grows back once shorn. They get shorn twice a year.
Is there any way for the sheep not to get it ??¿
This is disgusting, why can't I stop watching it. What's wrong with me 😞
I understand your pain. I got started watching mango worm videos a few years back and binge watched them. They were horrendous!
Poor sheep
What makes him go off on his own because of fly strike?
Yep, they often seclude themselves when feeling ill.
What causes the fly strike?
What is flystrike and what country are you in?
New zealand! Flystrike is when flies lay eggs or maggots on the sheep that crawl down and start biting the sheep causing a wound.
@@FarmWithMeNZ TY I am from Canada and I have never heard of that
Ok I'm not exactly what I just saw, were those "maggots" or what?
Some fly species lay eggs in damp or dirty wool or on wounds, and the hatching maggots then eat into the animal's skin. It's called flystrike.
Here's a video explaining with more detail ruclips.net/video/SU6fwQbaVtc/видео.html
Why are you not using preventive treatments.
U see those black spots and there it is…
Ok, so the closest animal I have had to that is a goat. What is flystrike? And living in Louisiana, would it happen here?
Here' a video we made explaining what flystrike is ruclips.net/video/SU6fwQbaVtc/видео.html Depends on what varieties of flies you've got in that region. Ask a local vet what pests would be prevalent in your area.
@@FarmWithMeNZ thank you
How long does it take for them to get that bad can’t they be checked regularly to keep from getting so bad
Fly Larvae can hatch in matter of night.
Sheep are prey animals, they hide illness very well until they feel so unwell that they isolate themselves like Rambo was doing. Notice the larvae wasn't visible until the ram was sheared with the clippers. Herds that are out free range grazing are checked on frequently, but they're very skittish and basically wild sometimes. Flocks and herds get checked as often as possible for vet visits, shearing (if they're sheep), and hoof trimmings. As well as deworming/pest control. Sometimes bad things just happen no matter how much you try to prevent it. Pest issues like this can pop up quite literally overnight, flies breed fast and grow fast.
I definitely wouldn’t like to farm with anyone who is so untimely with blow fly protection. No excuse for such extensive blowfly miasis. NZ? Guessing because of the Huntaway.
Oh my gosh! 🤢😢
Does anybody know how flystrike starts?
Guess what I’m asking is it that th3 sheep has a small cut or scratch that attracts flies who then lay eggs and then it escalates? Is that this happens?
Here is a video explaining we made explaining it ruclips.net/video/SU6fwQbaVtc/видео.html
Why do you let it get this bad?
Overgrazing the land
I’m not even sure what I was looking at there?
A bunch of flies had laid their eggs and the maggots were crawling all over him.
@@GORT70 But were they eating him like mango worms?
@@marks3742 The maggots are eating his skin and flesh, and if left untreated it can eventually kill him.
Mangoworms are also a form of flystrike.
@@feuerling But I thought maggots just are dead flesh?
@marks3742 I guess like mango worms they start feeding off any flesh they’ve hatched in. That would attract even more flies to lay more eggs, from the blood and sores. I am just guessing. It definitely reminded me of mango worms, which are also fly maggots.
What is fly strike?
Here is a video explaining it ruclips.net/video/SU6fwQbaVtc/видео.html
poor boy horrible little blighters i hate flies
Por que acontece isso?
Here is a video explaining it ruclips.net/video/SU6fwQbaVtc/видео.html
Is it good that infected sheep isolate themselves drom the group??? serms thry do that all on their own...... is 3here nothing that can deter this from happekjng because its horrific ... these flies know where to do it on the back where it cant be reached and all those maggots musy drive the sheep nuts ....
Why was he checked sooner before he got so bad??
Why do the sheep seem so terrified when a human comes near them?
Normal. Living in the wild, so to speak.
Sheep are a prey animal, and are easily preyed upon. They run from pretty much everything. 🌞
Vous faites ça expret vous laissez l'animal souffre pour faire des vidéos et gagner d largent
Probably
Avant d'en être sûr ...
Perhaps it's too morbid for the channel but do you have any footage or stories of this being fatal to your livestock?
It does happen. We don't share it as it is not a happy thing to film or post.
@@FarmWithMeNZI truly thank you for NOT posting this kind of content 🙏🏼 I love the fact you just keep these sheep happy and never have to send them away for you know what 🤞🏻I know I’m kidding myself here but please just play along with my dreams friend 😂🫶🏼
Rambo looks lame on his left front.
If this is how you ‘take care’ of your most expensive ram then may the gods help the rest of them. Incompetent, lazy and cruel.
I hope you're not letting them get this bad for a yt paycheck.
I agree, that would be harsh
Had to be left for a long time to get that bad. This is why you should handle livestock regularly and not have them out on giant pastures for endless weeks/months unattended.
C'mon. It can be hidden by the wool. Be happy that it was treated as soon as it was noticeable
I had fly strike come on in Several days. And I was around my sheep every day.
Those maggots can hide in the wool very well.
Actually, it happens quickly. Within days.
OK bro thanks for telling a new new zealand shepherd how to look after sheep.
